한 사내가 허름한 식당 문을 펄쩍 열어젖혔다
안에 있던 아주머니가 화들짝 놀랐다
아는 얼굴
아는 차림
사내의 식성도 알았다
마패라도 들고 온 줄 알겠어!
허름한 식당에 있던 아주머니가
허름한 식당에 들어온 사내를 보고 말했다
사내가 힘없이 ��었다
유독 배고파 보였다
사내는 모르고
아주머니만 아는 그 표정이었다
주방에서 청국장 끓는 소리가 났다
아는 소리
아는 냄새
20년 가까이 먹었으니
5분 뒤에 만끽할 맛도 아주 잘 알았다
맛있다는 말 말고
청국장의 맛을 어떻게 표현할 수 있을까
사내는 숟가락 끝에 혀를 대보았다
차가웠다
아는 온도였다
아는 감촉이었다
뚝배기가 나왔다
청국장이 아직도 열심히 끓고 있었다
사내는 들고 있던 숟가락을 뚝배기 안에 밀어 넣었다
뚝배기에 밀어 넣은 숟가락을 다시 입안에 밀어넣었다
뜨거웠다
입천장이 덴 것 같았지만 사내는 가만히 있었다
아는 맛이었다
아는 통증이었다
식당 문을 열고 모르는 사람들이 들어왔다
아주머니의 목소리가 달라졌다
사내가 모르는 목소리였다
마음만 먹으면
사람은 목소리를 바꿔 낼 수 있다
마음을 사로잡으려면
뚝배기의 바닥이 드러났다
사내가 일어났다
오늘도?
아주머니의 눈꼬리가 올라갔고
오늘도
사내의 눈꼬리가 처졌다
사내의 지갑이 얼마나 외로운지
입을 벌린 지 얼마나 오래되었는지
아주머니는 알지 못했다
보리차를 벌컥벌컥 들이켜고 밖에 나왔다
아는 벽에 모르는 포스터가 붙어 있었다
짜게 먹으면 싸게 죽습니다
사내는 목구멍으로 침을 삼켰다
목이 말랐다
식당 안에는
치우지 않은 뚝배기와 보리차가
끓지도 않고 아직,

참 이상할 정도로 감사한 일이다
사람이 사람에게 위로가 되는 법을
존재만으로 뜨끈한 무언가가 되어주는 법을
나는 한참 어린 E에게 언제나 배우는 입장이다
나이가 뭐가 중요하고
사회 경험은 또 뭐가 중요한가 싶은 요즘
우리는 그냥 다 어른인척 하는 아이들인 걸?
