the third instalment of my musical translation series — a classic work of russian literature, transposed to the stage. adapted from fyodor dostoyevsky's novel of the same name, this musical delves into the conflicting ideologies of four brothers in the wake of their father's death. what lies between action and intention, faith and reason, blood and bonds?

synopsis: based on the novel by fyodor dostoyevsky, this is a tale of patricide intertwined with philosophical pondering. when the karamazov patriarch is murdered, suspicion brews amidst his four sons – the ex-soldier dmitri, the intellectual ivan, the devout alyosha, and the neglected smerdyakov. while the eldest son dmitri is apprehended as the prime suspect, the shared history between his half-brothers ivan and alyosha draws them closer, even as ivan's atheistic arguments antagonise alyosha's beliefs. as for the illegitimate smerdyakov, his inferior status belies his shrewd mind – and his scheming spurs the brothers to confront truths they'd turned a blind eye to all this while. where exactly does evil begin? what is faith founded upon? and how thick does blood truly run?

[Smerdyakov] Alyosha ran away, averting his eyes to all of our father’s filth Holding fast to his faith in God He stayed a bystander to his actual father As he grew closer to God’s sanctity He shuddered at our father’s filth He shuddered at our father’s filth Had his actual father not died Would he have been able to walk towards the Holy Father?

Hi, can I ask if you have a list of the musicals/productions you post pictures of? (Or just your favourites if there's too many) They all look so cool and I would love to look them up!

Oh man, basically just look up any Korean musical and get some of the best set/costume design ever LMAO

In terms of ones I’ve posted most recently though, I’ve mostly posted pictures from

프랑켄슈타인 (Frankenstein the musical) pretty much all productions are good, but I think it’s currently easiest to find stuff for the 2019 production

엘리자베스 (Elisabeth the musical) most of the pics I’ve been posting related to this has been from the most recent production that’s currently ongoing!

도리안 그레이 (Dorian Gray the musical) there was only one production of this so far so you won’t get the wrong production :’)

브라더스 까라마조프 (Brothers Karamazov the musical) my favorite costuming for one of the characters Smerdyakov is from the most recent 2021 production, but all productions are great :]

와일드 그레이 (Wild Grey the musical) I think there’s only been one production of this so far

니진스키/디아길레프 (Nijinsky the musical/Diaghilev the musical) putting these together because they’re related. My favorite production of these is the 2022 one cause I got to see Nijinsky this year and Diaghilev came out this year lol (my pfp is of 조성윤 as Diaghilev in Diaghilev)

This is just a selection of ones I have posted about! If you’re interested, I’d recommend the tumblr blog @/koreanmusicals for great high quality photos of some productions I’ve mentioned here and others I haven’t! I occasionally rb their stuff too, but usually only if it has my favorite musical actors in it HAJDBDNKS

But if you wanna look for images/videos on your own, I’d recommend looking up the musical name in Korean + 뮤지컬 (musical) otherwise the search results are usually related to but not the actual musical (ie looking up Nijinsky the musical shows the actual guy or ballet’s related to him but not the musical)

책을 안 읽어서 원작이랑 비교는 못 하겠다. 뮤지컬 자체로의 스토리는 좋음.

(그러고보니 러시아 문학은 제대로 읽은 게 없는 것 같음. 이름 때문인가...)

캐스트만 보고 5형제의 이야기인가 했는데, 5형제가 아니라 아버지 + 4형제의 이야기다.  티켓에 쓰여 있는 “인간의 마음 밑바닥에는 선과 악이 물결친다”와는 달리 악으로 가득한 까라마조프 집안. 아버지의 살인범을 찾는 추리극 느낌. 캐치한 넘버는 없지만 나쁘지 않고 5인 화음이 좋다능.

표도르 역 김주호 배우. 크. ��티섹시. 내리깔고 읖조리는 목소리 좋긔.

드미트리 역 조풍래 배우. 가창력이 안 되는 건지 곡이 아직(도) 안 익숙한 건지... 사랑둥이 캐릭터라 답답했음. 감옥에서도 못 잊는 그루첸카, 모두의 사랑을 받는 그루첸카는 어떤 여자인지.

이반 역 강정우 배우. 지금 생각해보니 허지웅이랑 엄청 닮은 듯. 수트 핏 굳. 쉼표 머리 굳. 노래 굳.

알료샤 역 김대현 배우. 트로트... 너무 간드러지게 부른다능... 별로라능... 앞으로 피하는 캐스트일 듯.

스메르쟈코프 역 박준휘 배우. 수증기찡 불쌍해ㅠㅠ 키는 좀 작지만 괜찮은 가창력을 가진 것 같아서 다음 역할이 기대된다능. 아가사 초연 버전으로 돌아온다면 레이몬드 역 잘 어울릴 듯.
