the third instalment of my musical translation series — a classic work of russian literature, transposed to the stage. adapted from fyodor dostoyevsky's novel of the same name, this musical delves into the conflicting ideologies of four brothers in the wake of their father's death. what lies between action and intention, faith and reason, blood and bonds?

synopsis: based on the novel by fyodor dostoyevsky, this is a tale of patricide intertwined with philosophical pondering. when the karamazov patriarch is murdered, suspicion brews amidst his four sons – the ex-soldier dmitri, the intellectual ivan, the devout alyosha, and the neglected smerdyakov. while the eldest son dmitri is apprehended as the prime suspect, the shared history between his half-brothers ivan and alyosha draws them closer, even as ivan's atheistic arguments antagonise alyosha's beliefs. as for the illegitimate smerdyakov, his inferior status belies his shrewd mind – and his scheming spurs the brothers to confront truths they'd turned a blind eye to all this while. where exactly does evil begin? what is faith founded upon? and how thick does blood truly run?

the sixth instalment of my musical translation series — adapted from antonio buero vallejo's play of the same name, this musical questions the binary nature of ideologies through the lens of attitudes toward disabilities.

synopsis: in don pablo's school for the blind, the students walk around freely without canes. this is their utopia, where nothing in the world — especially not their lack of sight — can hold them back. then a transfer student by the name of ignacio arrives, clutching his cane like a lifeline. refusing to accept the idealistic facade of don pablo's students, ignacio denounces their misguided ideology. "you call yourselves sightless, trying to ignore the reality of your disability," ignacio says, "but in truth, you're all blind. we all are." while ignacio rationalises his suffering through his unfair lot in life, the students' leader carlos upholds optimism to disavow the limitations of their unseeing eyes. clinging fast to their own belief systems, carlos and ignacio inevitably clash — and their conflict heralds a chaos that will shake the very foundation that the school has been built upon.

Let’s Talk about New #Vintage (5) _ 지금껏 얘기한 #빈티지(#vintage) 패션의 급부상이 실제 우리와 동떨어진 현상일까? _ 요즘 전 세계 어디를 가도, 젊은이들이 많이 돌아다니는 동네에서 가장 쉽게 볼 수 있는 옷차림은 ‘스웨트셔츠’와 ‘야구 모자’, ‘트레이닝 팬츠’와 ‘청바지’ 등이다. 패션 사진가 정재환(JDZ Chung)은 얼마 전 출장으로 다녀온 런던에서 가장 많이 본 브랜드가 엘레쎄(#ELESSE)와 필라(#FILA)라고 했다. 솔직히 이 브랜드들은 #아디다스(#Adidas)나 #나이키(#Nike)처럼 세계적으로 인기 높은 스포츠 브랜드는 아니었다. 그런데 지금 젊은이들은 1980년대와 90년대에 나온 빈티지 헤어밴드와 로고가 크게 박힌 스웨트셔츠 등을 빈티지 매장에서 구해 입고 멋지다고 생각한다. _ 실제로 2016년 봄, 80년대 로고를 커다랗게 박은 아이템을 선보이는 필라 플래그십 매장이 서울에 문을 열었다. 디케이엔와이(#DKNY)나 캘빈 클라인(#CalvinKlein) 청바지처럼 90년대를 풍미한 브랜드도 당시 로고를 그대로 복원한 캡슐 컬렉션을 선보이고 있다. _ 누군가에게는 어린 시절 향수이지만, 요새 젊은이들에겐 직접 경험하지는 않은 문화가 그 안에 있다. 이러한 빈티지의 간접 경험은 남들과 달라지고 싶다는 욕망과 향수를 동시에 자극한다. 1980년대와 90년대를 되새기는 친근한 빈티지의 열풍이 당분간 이어질 수밖에 없는 이유가 바로 ���기 있다. _ by The NAVY Magazine © @DKNY Campaign, 1994.
