ahhh yes it is really difficult because reader doesn't feel she's enough for Satoru AND reader is actually very jealous of anyone with him, so she feels this is how she keeps him around and interested. Not knowing that man is OBSESSED with her my god!!! 😭

He literally can't get his dick hard from just seeing this girl. And he feels he's not enough for her and is using the clear interest she has in sex as a way to keep HER because he doesn't feel adequate due to his profession.

The fucked part is they BOTH are accepting of each other but something has to give and it can't be just reader here. Satoru however is not intentionally hurting or changing her. I love the Emperor's New Groove a lot but sometimes I wonder what Kingdom of the Sun would've been like. On one hand, I love the ideas they had for Pacha, Yzma (gosh, she was such a diva!) and the songs were solid. On the other, I feel prototype Kuzco (Manco) would've basically been a side character in his own movie which feels odd given even in the rare clips of the original draft, he's got such a personality that it'd be weird to make him Not Relevant. And no Kronk, which...yeah... and I'm not really digging the whole "everyone gets a love interest." I kinda appreciated the Chicha/Pacha dynamic in the final film even more after reading about the romance aspect in KoTS + watching those bits in the Sweatbox documentary. The fact they added the Manco love interest very late into trying to get KoTS finished, so there's basically only concept art of Mata - which I'm guessing was recycled for Malina? I'm not as versed in the TV series but I saw some episodes here and there, and I feel Malina doesn't fall into "just the love interest" like the two girls in the Kingdom of the Sun did.

Oof, I'm rambling a lot. I think the original idea had its perks but I also kinda side eye people when they say it would've been better than ENG simply because "it's more Disney 90s like" even though it's kinda. not comparable to those animated epics or classic love stories because they didn't get to fully finish the thing. But if we have to judge by what information we have - I do prefer ENG simply because it's all neatly tied up, and most of the characters are more solid. Though concept!Yzma is so interesting to me, and god I love her song.

I also took notice that the end credits song in ENG is the only other song composed during the early stages of development that didn't get cut. It's very... melancholic compared to the Tom Jones song that was written when the film got retooled into a comedy. Plus the lyrics are more in line with Roger Allers' plotline + vision for the main duo's dynamic than Mark Dindal's. So I'm guessing it was an end credits song that Disney didn't want to let go of, and decided to keep because they were already exasperating Sting at this point. I like it, but it's an observation of the sudden tone shift from a very nice comedy centered around Pacha and Kuzco's bond to "why does it sound like they split up lol". I can only imagine being a kid in 2001 and listening to the soundtrack my parents got a while after I saw the latest Disney film, and then hearing all the scrapped songs and the end credits one.

anon i'm so sorry this was in my inbox for several weeks and i'm sorry if my reply ends up as just kind of rambly nonsense because i loved reading your thoughts!! but i 100% agree i am so constantly fascinated by kingdom of the sun and what it might've been like... i wouldn't want to trade the emperor's new groove for it but i do love the idea of an epic 90s-style disney movie that's more heavily influenced by its roots in inca culture and mythology than TENG ended up being. i mean, not that TENG doesn't still have nods to that but it's obviously very anachronistic and modern and inca gods and myths aren't really mentioned at all whereas they would've played heavily into KOTS's story! also, emperor's new school has kuzco casually speaking spanish and has a spanish exchange student in it even though he's the emperor of a kingdom that eventually gets colonized by spain and has its own indigenous language so idk if that was the best choice by the writers haha but i digress. wanting to know more about kingdom of the sun beyond the bits and pieces we've been given is the main reason why i desperately wish TENG wasn't one of the only disney movies to not have an artbook.

as for mata & malina i have this whole AU that only exists in my head where new school doesn't happen but kuzco and malina still meet and she doesn't like him at first and sarcastically calls him llama boy like mata would've done but again that isn't really relevant here is it 😭 i personally have complicated feelings about the show but malina is easily my favorite thing about it! you're completely right, she's not "just the love interest" at all, she has her own multifaceted personality that gets fleshed out more as the show goes on and gives her more focus and she also takes no shit from kuzco and i love that for her. it does make me wonder what mata and nina, and their romances with manco and pacha respectively, would've been like outside of the small glimpses we've seen. one day she'll love me is a beautiful song but i get the feeling that KOTS wouldn't have had a lot of time to flesh out both the girls individually on top of everything else the plot had going on.

also, yes, i LOVE all the ideas they originally had for yzma and while obviously she's an absolute blast even now (who i also love thinking about but i never end up posting my thoughts lol) i think the original version of her also sounded incredible. it makes me so sad that eartha kitt never ended up getting to sing in the final film. snuff out the light is one of my favorite disney villain songs if not my favorite even—i highly recommend checking out these two fan animatics for it if you haven't seen them. your thoughts on TENG's credits song are interesting too because i never really thought about it (admittedly i don't listen to it often, it's not my style of music) but you're right, it is an odd tone shift especially with perfect world being the only song in the movie.
