7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to [Clara] that you like?

I will always “teehee” at Clara memes, this one by rat-prophetess has been my most quoted since last May

When Clara’s included in Termite content on the sheer principle that she’s a teenager. So sweet.

When fans remember she can sometimes get along with the other Healers, even when she’s depicted as their occasionally annoying sister.

When artists keep the gap between her upper-front teeth or give her shaggy hair

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to [Clara] that you despise?

“Despise” is a strong word I'd only use for the time a guy called Clara Burakhovsky’s adopted daughter (with Artemy as the “jock” and Dankovsky as the “gay nerd”); I know Clara would strangle him for the mere association.

Oh, but I do despise when fans neglect the fact that she’s as much Artemy and Dankovsky’s doppelgänger/soulmate as they are each other’s, though I can imagine why some are wont to neglect that.

The following’s less offensive since her personality’s subjective, but I don’t enjoy when writers/artists refuse to ground her in teenaged-girlhood or neglect to distinguish her from her eldritch sister as a person. A prime example of the former is that line in which Bad Grief asks if she’s looking for patterned stockings or a doll house just to irritate her. I love that she’s modeled after a developer’s younger sister, and I want her to remind me of girls I know, between her desires or her affection for specific people rather just ‘humanity’ as a hazy whole. We already have two protagonists who are men, and have certain relationships to women/womanhood specific to them, so it would be nice to appreciate the aspects of Clara that men can't necessarily relate to (but are still resonant to many people). I believe she loves the Saburovs, or at least wants their love—but some fans treat her like an angel of death only out for their blood. I also think she’s friends with some of her Bound, but she’s often depicted in isolation unless it’s to call the other two Healers idiots.

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to [Clara].

As she already is? Clara is *so* '90s grunge and the reason I refuse to believe the game is set anytime before c.mid-1960s. If you asked me to dress her in another subculture, she’d pull off cyber grunge, fairy grunge, or 2000s olderbrothercore. My Pinterest board makes her look like a ‘Messy French It Girl’ sometimes, which is so appropriate for our Jeanne d'Arc

An artist once drew her with a long skirt, but in a ‘hobo in the colder months’ way, and it’s easily my favorite art of her.

18. How about a relationship [Clara] has in canon with another character that you admire?

Whoa, “admire” specifically? Well, I admire—even envy—Clara’s dynamic with older men such as Vlad Sr, Victor, Rubin, Bad Grief; how easily they come to treat her like a younger sister or daughter.

Her animosity toward Andrey and the debate they have is the reason I began to like him.

But one of my favorite relationships is the one she shares with Tot that brings out her tender, nurturing side.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for [Clara], what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

I enjoy detailing Clara’s private, cozy moments in the Rod with her parents, talking about the meals they share and what she wears (you might remember an instance in which she borrows her father’s pajamas since she hates itchy nightgowns), how her room is arranged, and what it means to be Katerina’s heiress (such as becoming well-versed in the town’s intrigues).

I don't enjoy writing about her sister, who (I believe) represent the aspects of Clara that soured my opinion of her during the Haruspex route, or inevitably addressing how mercurial her personality is, which should make Clara feel real but only makes her feel surreal: more like an idea or symbol than a grounded, relatable person. In the end, I tend to ignore that and focus on how she was in my playthrough.

The rest is difficult to articulate, so I pulled pins from my board & a song which hopefully offer an idea of how I want to portray her/what I want to see from others’ future portrayals:

i finally rewatched wicked and have since given elphie a tag!!! so here's some base ideas for my s/i...

he's a gillikin and was adopted and raised by a sphynx cat (with the help of a human assistant, but he feels the cat is more of his parent than the human)

he's also a two-time university drop out, from the gillikin univesity, and is making a third attempt in academics at shiz. maybe a change in environment will help?

he hopes to study and become a bard/storyteller, his main obstacles being his distaste toward common studying tactics and his social anxiety

regarding his relationship with elphaba, i think he'd be one of the extremely few people who doesn't even react to her being green. they probably met while studying in the library and she noticed how much he was struggling.

I'm curious, what is Brutus' thoughts on what's viewed as the traditional route: Heaven's idea of a pure, straight cis marriage that later results in children? Would he be happy in that life? What makes him realize what he wants is with Cor?

I'm actually writing something about that right now, so thank you, as this will be helpful. The simple answer of weather Brutus would be happy is no, and I won't clarify as I sort of want the text itself and the explanation here speak for itself.

The thing is, Brutus realizes a hero and villain dynamic has the type of security he's looking for. Think about it. A hero and a villain are two individuals who push for the other to get better, swear the other their ultimate rival as a way of saying "I'm focusing most of my energy on you", and have differing personality traits that can really help balance each other out. It's exciting while still leaving room for self improvement, and, unlike a lot of the people in Heaven, Cor won't betray Brutus under the guise of "supporting the greater good" or "following protocol".

Hell, Cor is the first to be brutally honest with Brutus about how Heaven sees him. The first time they meet, Cor refers to Brutus as "Heaven's good boy" or "Heaven's guard dog". Though Cor is no longer that cruel, she still is very blunt when she believes someone is taking advantage of Brutus. In general, I'd say they point out the others flaws while also appreciating each other for their uniqueness and not caging the other down.

I've been expanding the cast to help explain Brutus' view on these sorts of things the same way I did for Cor in the past, so let's explore that further.

Adam and Eve serve as mentors for Brutus. They're an old couple who's been together for years, yet have managed to keep up the excitement with their love as strong as ever, and who still have a very good relationship with their son, even in adulthood. Brutus and Tempest's son, whom I still need to name, most likely was friends with Abel as well, and I imagine they're still fairly close. This is the type of marriage Brutus wants, one that balances fun with carrying out traditional responsibilities, or at least, it's the marriage he thinks he should have.

Yet, one of Brutus' other mentors is Body, a tough as nails playboy who scoffs at mushy romantic stuff, yet prioritizes order alongside Soul, with both of them likely encouraging Brutus to settle down for the sake of security and making a mark on Heaven, not just Hell with his job. Here's the thing about Body, yes he might not be into the mushy stuff, but he's definitely the brand of toxic masculinity that likes the idea of having offspring simply so he can have a legacy. You can't tell me he hasn't tried to get with Soul with the idea of being a power couple with children that'd mix both their abilities. Hell, one could even argue they're the perfect pair, Body being the controlling macho type, and Soul the shameful nurturing type, toxic masculinity meets toxic femininity, which is something else worth thinking about.

Finally, I imagine Brutus is friends with Willie, who I've talked about extensively, so let's delve into what example that is setting for Brutus. Willie was in a failing marriage in life, yet managed to marry someone similar to him, they had a kid, and now he's living a shallow happily ever after. Willie and Willow never challenge each other. Willow doesn't help Willie see the value in not shying away from the more difficult conversations, and Willie never challenges Willow to be less judgmental of those she sees as "trapped in boxes". Because they're in Heaven, those two can just stay petty together forever without having their marriage be challenged in anyway. It's the safe option, but not really the one that's good for either of them.

These couples can send good messages: It's important to focus on being a positive influence in your child's life over just pumping out as many kids as possible. Your children may reach greater heights than you, and that's okay. Getting married and having children doesn't make you any less of a free spirit, and just because your first shot at love didn't work out, that doesn't me it's over. Yet, there's also the bad: The best way to serve God is to have children. It's most important that your partner makes you look good over all else. The stereotypical married life didn't work for you? Well just try it again, I'm sure it'll go better with the second wife, especially if she's basically just like you! If you have a kid and can play the stereotypical role as a parent, that just cements the relationship! And that's the trend, isn't it?

Adam and Eve had children as a display of their loyalty to God's plan. To put it lightly, Body wants Soul to have his babies as a power move, and so they can feel superior to other couples, as their children would likely be very powerful. It becomes about putting on a show, gaining dominance, or flaunting to other couples rather than any genuine connection. With Soul and Body being such big influences, and basically his parental figures, I think it's fair to say that Brutus has been "raised" as if marriage and parenthood was some challenge he had to conquer for worthiness rather than focusing on the emotions involved. Which he did, but because the marriage wasn't maintained, they treat Brutus like a failure.

Though, I'm gonna excuse Adam and Eve from this one. Yes, they saw it as their God given duty to populate the Earth, but that was because they and the other first humans would have been the only humans on Earth ever otherwise. But, in the present, they are extremely supportive and glad couples don't need to feel obligated anymore. The love they have for each other and their child is also genuine. It's Brutus' perspective on this one that is skewered, rather than it reflecting Adam and Eve's true attitudes.

I think it'd be helpful if I created a character that was Brutus' perfect wife from this perspective. Tempest was not, as she turned out to be a rebel, so who would Soul and Body deem Brutus' perfect second wife? Instead, I think it'd be more fitting if there were three women that represented the ideals of each of Brutus' role models. The first wants to start a family with Brutus, the second sees the importance of his role, and wants to give Brutus someone who can help him reach greater heights in Heaven, and the third is very similar to Brutus. Spit balling names for them, Orchid, Clara, and Bliss. Thinking of characters and items that exemplify the ideas they represent, for Orchid, I think a dolphin is a good fit along with sand (passage of time), Clara a wolf along with gold, and Bliss a dog along with balloons.

I also think it'd be funny if they were big fans of the band, since it'd then look like a set up for Brutus, Cassius, and Antony to each get a girlfriend. Except, we know that isn't what happens for Brutus, Antony is aromantic, and Cassius is way more interested in his work, hobbies, and friends.

Cor's perspective on this is interesting, because, through Tina and Linden set good examples as a couple completely satisfied with their choice to remain childless, and the apartments are full of conventional relationships, Cor's main experience with jocks is being bullied. So Cor has to adjust to being in such a close relationship with a jock, and Cor has to adjust to being in such a close relationship with a rule breaker.

Summary: OUGH I'M GOING BONKERS here's a Elphwen meet cute fic roughly twenty-four hours after officially f/oing her. Also I misspelt his name on another post but it's fine. Rowen hides away in Shiz's library to study long into the night. Elphaba can't sleep and slips away to the library, despite the school's curfew, only to be sidetracked by Rowen's presence.

Pale moonlight streamed through the strikingly clear windows of Shiz University’s vast library. It was late. Very late. Rowen should’ve gone to bed hours ago, in fact, the school’s curfew demanded it, but he had managed to remain hidden here, in this sanctuary of books, far beyond the allotted time. He was desperate not to drop out this year, not from Shiz, knowing how much it had cost his family to send him so far away.

He half-lay, half-sat, curled over the spines of ancient books in a section of the library that turned like a large clock, bouncing a small rubber ball off the opposite side of the cylinder. A book on the history of bards lay open in his lap, but he was far from reading it.

He would’ve stayed like that until the wee hours of the morning if it wasn’t for the unexpected. His head twitched up at the unmistakable sound of a door opening and closing, however soft it might’ve been. This made him realise how stiff he was, and with a light groan, he pulled himself out of his strange position. A gasp made him turn his head again. There was a girl, staring at him, from the shadows. He vaguely recognised her, but had never been properly introduced. He placed a grateful hand over his chest.

“Oh, thank Oz, I thought you were the librarian,” he quipped, subtly trying to stretch out his aching muscles.

“As did I,” she admitted. They stood awkwardly apart from each other for a moment. Rowen leaned down to pick up his book and ball, clearing his throat.

“So… do you read by moonlight often??”

She hesitated. “No… I couldn’t sleep. You?”

He stretched out his back. “I’d much rather be sleeping… but, yes, unfortunately, it’s become a bit of a habit.” He grunted as his spine popped. “I’m Rowen.” He wasn’t sure why he introduced himself. Anything to break the floundering between them.

“Elphaba,” she responded. “What are you reading?” Slowly, she stepped out of the shadows, knowing they would likely go unnoticed for the time being. The first thing Rowen noticed was her striking gaze. These stone-green eyes full of mystery, intelligence, and sadness, framed by unique, circular glasses. While he normally avoided eye contact, she had him spellbound.

“I… what??”

He saw the guard go up in her expression and internally winced. What had he done to offend her?? She sighed heavily, clearly preparing to say something she had said numerous times before.

“I am not seasick. I did not eat grass as a child. I have always been green.”

“Green??” Rowen blinked and realised a few more things about Elphaba’s appearance. Her long, black hair, done in two braids down the front of her shoulders, and her vibrant green skin. “It’s not that. It’s not that at all.” He gripped his book, finding it hard to express himself.

Elphaba now regarded him quizzically, unsure of what to think. Suddenly, Rowen blurt out, “A Bard’s History by Ionmi Bhones.” She glanced down at the cover of the book and slowly nodded.

“You’re studying to become a bard.”

Rowen nodded, paused, then shook his head. “I want to be a bard. But that’s my problem… studying.” They found themselves wandering over to one of the tables, soon sitting opposite each other. “Let me tell you, Elphaba, I’m a two-time dropout. If I can’t graduate from Shiz, I don’t know what I’ll do. So that’s why I’m up.”

With the conversation shifting away from appearances, Elphaba seemed to relax somewhat. “You look exhausted.”

Rowen softly groaned, folding his arms on the table and resting his forehead on the backs of them. “I’m exhausted and I haven’t even done anything.” He briefly looked up. “What about you, how’s your studying going?”

She glanced away. “Some people say I do too much.”

“Must be nice to have a mind that works.” He shrugged, returning to his self-made cave.

There was a pause. “Maybe I could help you. I don’t know much about bards, but I’m a fast learner.”

He looked up again. “Why??”

“There’s something… different about you.”

He softly chuckled. “Like I haven’t heard that one before. I still don’t understand… but… thank you.”

Elphaba nodded. “I think you should start by getting some rest. You’ll never be able to study properly if you’re staying up all night.”

“Okay.” Rowen sat up straight and suddenly felt the way he appeared, heavy with exhaustion. “Goodnight, Elphaba.”

“Goodnight, Rowen.”
