— these are just the lyrics that stuck out to me the first time i listened to it, but, the entirety of the song perfectly captures kyle’s mindset as she sets out on this new life she inadvertently (no good deed goes unpunished) set up for herself; but she has a hard time (a really REALLY hard time) leaving the past behind, she carries (no, drags) it with her every where she goes and at first she believes she has to; it’s a reminder of what’s at stake (her niece, aspen, and a life for her that savannah, her sister, would want her to have) but it’s also a way she torments herself into making these brash and reckless decisions that yes, keep them alive, but eat away at her constantly and consistently keeps her “alone” or unable to see and accept that others are there to shoulder that weight. that ‘glimpse of hope’ comes in the form (mostly) of watching her (aspen) grow and thrive stay innocent and protected but it’s sat the expense of her herself, which, to her is a just sacrifice since she blames herself for everything that’s happened to them in the past.

— no huge explanation here, but, whenever i think about her or mull over things i’d like to write this is always sneaking into the back of my mind.
