a closed starter for @rxskeeter where: a third floor corridor
It is a truth, perhaps only occasionally acknowledged and yet near-universally known, that no place in the world held a greater treasure trove of secrets, regrets, half-formed wishes and ill-gotten dreams that a girls loo. The second best option that didn't tend to involve fourteen-year old girls cooing about a seventeen-year old was wherever Rita Skeeter was, and it was sheer hope at this point that had brought Alecto to the third floor.
Alecto, after all, had a question. It wasn't a particularly important matter, Morgana knows better than to bring that kind of thing to someone like Rita if you still wanted enough time in the day to do literally anything else. Alecto didn't exactly want to spend her entire day talking with Rita Skeeter, and so sacrifices were to be made. Pushing off from the wall she had made her spot for a moment at the sighting of blonde hair.
"Rita," Alecto called out, not bothering to raise her voice, "did you ever find out more about that Evans thing? Oh, never mind all that," she added immediately after, not even pausing, "did you want to hear about my plans for that Quidditch game? I rather imagine they're up your alley"

There's this underlying theme of motherhood being under-looked in Harry Potter - Voldemort underestimates Lily, Molly is seen as this frumpy housewife, etc... and JKR thinks she's blowing everyone out of the water by then making motherhood the single most important thing i the story!
Yet! Not a single working mother! In the entire series! "The struggles of motherhood" is JKR's favourite card to invalidate trans women's experiences, and yet she seems to have an (unsurprisingly) narrow mind when it comes to what motherhood can look like.
Here's an example that comes to mind: in the context of the second war, with Remus being a man persecuted by both the Ministry and Death Eaters for his condition and position in the Order, there was no reason for him to marry Tonks. I'm not talking about "building a family" or "being together", I'm talking about signing wedding papers.
Personally, I think JKR places a weird amount of value on traditional marriage, and upholds the ideal of a nuclear family above all things. She could not have Tonks giving birth a baby without being married to a man first.
YEP!
For the Tonks/Lupin issue you can’t even blame this fully on the fact it’s being written in a children’s book because JKR’s description of their relationship later on pottermore falls into the same traditional (and honestly puritanical) traps. And like you mentioned, this doesn’t even make sense for their story/relationship. (there’s an implication that they were only just friends until that confrontation in HBP and were never actually together or even hooking up. Most remadora shippers, like myself, tend to not like this version of events because it makes their whole marriage/relationship look a bit ridiculous. Tonks’ behavior in HBP comes off a lot different if they never had any romantic interactions at that point. It also seems odd that they would get married in less than a month of being together if they were strictly platonic up until that point)
And yes her view of motherhood is incredibly limiting and a bit revealing. In general it’s used as a tool which to measure her female characters by: The non maternal/improperly maternal women are clearly marked as villains (Rita Skeeter, Umbridge, Petunia, Bellatrix, Marge), the maternal ones are seen as demonstrating proper femininity and are therefore good (Lily, Molly, Tonks), women who were looked down upon previously get a redemption arc focusing around this (Narcissa) (Fleur can also fit into this category as she takes on a Molly like role in DH) and the women who don’t have kids but are still supposed to be seen positively look after kids to some capacity (McGonagall)
Her use of motherhood in the terf rhetoric she spreads is stemming from a similar idea. Gender essentialists tend to highlight female suffering as their primary justification for their exclusionary behavior, whether this suffering be biological or societal. Suffering and pain is used to define femininity itself. Suffering, female suffering, is noble, divine, inherent, and honorable. Motherhood, like you mentioned, is one of the biological sufferings they reference for their argument. The pain of giving birth and the sacrifice of your body and the rest of your life is noble, divine, inherent, and honorable.
In the books motherhood is suffering and motherhood is sacrifice. A woman who accepts this role of pain achieves righteousness. A woman who rejects it is selfish and wicked.

I agree that Sirius was the best caring adult figure in Harry's life, but there is something that has been bothering me.
Molly said that Sirius was seeing James instead of Harry and was treating the latter as the former's stand in and well this line from GOF came to mind- ‘You’re less like your father than I thought,’ he said finally, a definite coolness in his voice. ‘The risk would’ve been what made it fun for James.’
So like I am unsure if I just started viewing their interactions through this lens without any basis after Molly mentioned that line, or if Sirius actually did this in canon. Thoughts?
Hi, 👋
I think Molly is wrong about how Sirius sees Harry as a James stand-in. Sirius doesn't treat Harry the way he treated James. I covered it a bit here, but Sirius is very protective of Harry. While Sirius would definitely do a lot to keep James safe, it's different. Sirius saw James as an equal, capable of just as much as himself, Harry, whom he clearly treats as someone more precious than himself. The way he tries to protect Harry and gives advice to him never read to me like how you'd talk to your best friend who's your peer.
And Sirius knows Harry isn't James. In the quote you brought up yourself, he even calls it out. The line is from OotP and the context is kind of important here. This is after Sirius was stuck in Grimauld for the better part of the year and offered Harry to come check on him during a Hogsmead weekend in his dog form. Harry shot him down:
“All right, all right, I’ve got the point,” said Sirius. He looked most displeased. “Just an idea, thought you might like to get together —” “I would, I just don’t want you chucked back in Azkaban!” said Harry. There was a pause in which Sirius looked out of the fire at Harry, a crease between his sunken eyes. “You’re less like your father than I thought,” he said finally, a definite coolness in his voice. “The risk would’ve been what made it fun for James.”
(OotP, 305)
What Sirius is doing here isn't nice, but it's not really him seeing Harry as a James stand-in. He is guilting Harry using James to agree to him to come. Sirius just wants to do something, to get out of Grimauld, and he cares a lot for Harry's safety, but not much for his own. So, to Sirius, the risk of getting caught and sent back to Azkaban isn't as bad as someone hurting Hary. But Harry wants to protect Sirius. So, Sirius is doing a shitty thing trying to guilt Harry using his dad, but he is in a very bad place mentally, and back in GoF, it always seemed to me he sees Harry as Harry.
All the advice Sirius gives Harry is with the intent of keeping him safe. With James, I think he would approach advice in a whole different way. Here is a scene from GOF that doesn't strike me as the way Sirius would behave with James, an equal peer:
“Sirius — how’re you doing?” ... “Never mind me, how are you?” said Sirius seriously. “I’m —” For a second, Harry tried to say “fine” — but he couldn’t do it. Before he could stop himself, he was talking more than he’d talked in days — about how no one believed he hadn’t entered the tournament of his own free will, how Rita Skeeter had lied about him in the Daily Prophet, how he couldn’t walk down a corridor without being sneered at — and about Ron, Ron not believing him, Ron’s jealousy . . . “. . . and now Hagrid’s just shown me what’s coming in the first task, and it’s dragons, Sirius, and I’m a goner,” he finished desperately. Sirius looked at him, eyes full of concern, eyes that had not yet lost the look that Azkaban had given them — that deadened, haunted look. He had let Harry talk himself into silence without interruption, “Dragons we can deal with, Harry, but we’ll get to that in a minute — I haven’t got long here . . . I’ve broken into a wizarding house to use the fire, but they could be back at any time. There are things I need to warn you about.” “What?” said Harry, feeling his spirits slip a further few notches. . . . Surely there could be nothing worse than dragons coming? “Karkaroff,” said Sirius. “Harry, he was a Death Eater. You know what Death Eaters are, don’t you?” “Yes — he — what?” “He was caught, he was in Azkaban with me, but he got released...
(GoF, 331-332)
Harry's well-being is more important than his own, Sirius, at no point complains about living in caves or eating rats to Harry. To his best friend James, I can guarantee Sirius would have made at least a quip about it. Not with Harry. Because Sirius doesn't want him to feel any guilt over asking him for help or advice.
And Sirius just lets Harry rent, just talk his heart out because he needs to and he has no one else to talk to. This is something I believe he would've done for James too, but with James, it would be mutual. Both of them would rent to each other and make jokes about it to lighten the mood, with Harry he doesn't do any of that. He's concerned for Harry, at no point does he talk about himself. Harry remarks himself Sirius looks concerned and not with the same dead, haunted look from Azkaban.
And Sirius explains things to Harry patiently, he doesn't expect him to know everything he knows in the way he would with James. He's aware Harry isn't James, that he's younger, that he needs to be protected. Sirius is aware he is the adult and that he should take care of Harry and allow him to feel safe his own comfort be damned.
So, yes, I think Molly's line colored their interactions in OOTP for a lot of fans. Sirius, being in an overall worse mental state and lashing out more, helped this image. But I never got the impression Sirius saw Harry as James reborn at any point.
The movies did Sirius no favors either by adding this line: "Nice one, James!"
I hate that line so much, it just doesn't represent the way Sirius sees Harry at all. Sirius sees James in Harry, but he is still aware he's a different person. I think he's not as crazed from his time in Azkaban as Molly or some of the fandom think him to be. In GoF, he is so sensible, and he actually figured out the whole plot except for who the Death Eater is. His less stable behavior in OotP I think is more a result of being essentially under home arrest (in a place that he both misses and despises himself for missing) while people he cares for are in danger and less the result of Azkaban.

A soft smile touched Narcissa’s lips, the kind that suggested both amusement and a well-guarded pride. “You’re too kind, Rita,” she said smoothly, though the slight tilt of her chin hinted that she fully accepted the compliment. She sipped her tea. “Emma and Sethos certainly did go all out yes, but I suppose that's part of living your life in the limelight. It was still an incredible day.” She nodded
Narcissa's expression remained composed. “Of course they are,” she said coolly, her voice silk over steel. “Scandal sells far better than truth. And those unwilling to form their own convictions are always eager to be told what to think—especially when it’s written in glittering ink on glossy parchment.”
Rita had no doubt that the wedding taking the top spot for the year would be Agatha’s. There was something about her friend and her incredible standards that would make it harder and harder for others to have a chance to compete. “Well, yours certainly set the bar high last year. Not to mention Emma and Sethos. Then again, they did go a bit too far out, didn’t they? Quidditch players with certain requirements and expectations in the public eye. I think yours would have to be my favorite. For last year!” It was a compliment, one rarely given by the blonde yet with the witch in front of her the witch saw no issues giving out freely.
“And right you are.” Rita nodded, the words resonating with her. “Plenty of the daily issues are filled with those things. Even Witch Weekly is struggling to remain away from the current topics floating around out there.” The gleam in the journalist’s eye said more than any words could. If there was a chance to be dragging lower beings through the mud to sway to opinions of those unsure where to stand, she was more than happy to draw a circle precisely where they were meant to stand. - @nvrcissasm

Some thoughts about Albus and his lack of emotional connections
I'm listening to GoF on my way to and from work right now (there are very easily findable free versions online, so u don't have to give jkr any more money fyi) and i just reached the chapter during which Rita Skeeter exposes Hagrid as a half-giant. That chapter also has one of my favourite little moments of the entire book: Harry, Ron, Hermine and Albus convincing Hagrid to come out of hiding. Not just because it's funny af but also because it reveals so much abour these characters and their relationships
For one, it's just really funny. Hermione yelling through the door for Hagrid to get his act together and then coming face to face with her headmaster and you can hear her inner goody-two-shoes waring against the growing political activist (which kinda ends in her just blanking completely)
Then you have Harry who is the only one of the trio to speak more then a sentence while they are knowingly in the presence of Albus Dumbledore. He even swears in his presence. And while he quickly apologises ("I've gone temporarily deaf and have no idea what you just said" lol) this reveals a level of familiarity and comfort with Albus that the others clearly lack.
And then there's Albus and OH MY GOD that man is allergic to deep emotional connection. It would be funny (it is kinda funny) if it weren't so sad. They're on the topic of unsavoury family history and how society will judge you for it and how you should not let that teach you shame. This is a topic Albus is intimately familiar with. He started school under the assumption that he was the son of a muggle-hating criminal. And he couldn't even refute that notion because to do that he'd have to reveal the real reason for the attack. Later there were the squip rumours around his sister and then whatever people must have said when both she and her mother died under mysterious circumstances in a span of less then three months.
But does he mention any of this? No. His mind clearly goes there though. Hagrid talks about his shame about his giant-mother Harry replies by saying "look at my family, look at the Dursleys." And Albus goes "An excellent idea", but instead of getting into any of the very pertinente history above he aims for humour and deflection. He brings up a funny and frankly bizarre story of Aberforth doing something inappropriate with a goat (not getting into that can of worms because ... why?? Never understood that one from a doylist standpoint) and then throws in a good dash of irony by implying that Aberforth didn't know what people were writing about him considering he might not be able to read. And then he very quickly leaves.
It's textbook Albus deflection. Here was a real chance to emotionally bond with both Harry and, even more so, Hagrid. Especially considering that I'm very sure one of the reasons he's so fond of both of them is that he does know what it's like in their shoes. He knows them. He can empathise with them. He doesn't, however, allow them to know him, to empathise with him.
It honestly makes me so sad. Because everything we know about Albus and Hagrid suggests that there was a lot of mutual affection there. This interaction however suggests that, like with almost every relationship Albus ever has, he doesn't allow Hagrid to know him. I'm not sure he even knows how to open up at this point. (Until Harry violently demands openness from him at the end of book five. Oh, I could kiss him for that)

Longing gazes, complicated feelings, one would almost think they’re watching Shakespeare’s play rather than seeing two supposed best friends interact.
"¿A ti no te afectó? Claro, porque sería demasiado pedir que no hiciera el ridículo yo sola, ¿no?" agregó, su tono una mezcla de sarcasmo y curiosidad real.

QUIDDICH HEARTTHROB JAMES POTTER HAS A NEW LOVER? Article by Rita Skeeter
We all know and love the quidditch star James Potter, ever since he first came to hogwarts he has captivated all of us with his charming looks and personality, truly the sun in person!
That's why ever since he reached the number one spot in rumours!'s "Hogwarts' most eligible bachelor" everyone has been desperate for a date with him.
However, James Potter himself just admitted to having a crush! And who wouldn't return this boy's feelings?
Last week we did a poll on who you thought could be this mystery person, here are the results! Stay till the end to find who was voted the most.
6. Severus Snape - 15 votes
Ever since stepping foot in Hogwarts these two seemed to have a strong rivalry, going as far as fighting each other on the hallway!
Despite the last 6 years, they seem to have made up? Since a few months ago they have been seen talking normally like nothing ever happened.
Did something happen between them? Some readers say that love was the glue that fixed old wounds, how romantic!!
5. Peter Pettigrew - 19 votes
Being childhood friends, it wouldn't be such a surprise if something happened between them. They are in the same friend group, have the same tastes, even share a room!
Apparently, some readers close to the boys have said that even though they are in the same group of friends, they seem to be more closed off with each other, preferring to keep to themselves in the group.
It's no doubt they have been though a lot together, maybe it was shared experices what pulled them together.
4. Regulus Black - 22 votes
Being his best friend's younger brother, they see each other quite a lot. But that's not only why this couple is so popular between the students.
Whilst James is caring and charismatic, Regulus is more reserved and mysterious, making them the perfect opposites attract!
"James is like the sun and Regulus the stars" Truly beautiful words by a secret informant.
They have even been seen practicing together. Even though they are enemies and in rival houses! It seems like love knows no limits.
3. Barty Crouch Jr. - 30 votes
What an unexpected duo! At a first glance, they would look like they have nothing in common, however, our readers are more observant than that.
Because Barty is a year younger, their first years together they didn't interact much, but as the years passed they seemed to become closer.
The couple has been caught spending time alone in quiet spaces more than once, and when questioned, they quickly change the subject. How suspicious!
One of Barty's housemates said he even went to look for him to speak privately during valentine's day. What could this mean? Our readers are certainly eager to find out more!
2. Sirius Black - 34 votes
He's James' best friend and has been ever since they first met. They are always together, and some people even refer to them as soulmates!
Sirius' good looks landed him the second spot in most eligible bachelor right next to James. It would be no surprise that they end up together.
The duo is known for their elaborate pranks, always being up to something. That's why even teachers have noticed their habit of constantly touching and whispering to each other.
They may cause trouble, but they certainly cause even more confusion about the nature of their relationship.
With their beauty, I'm sure everyone will have mixed feelings about them becoming a couple.
1. Lily Evans - 40 votes
With a whopping 25% of the votes, miss Lily Evans is positioned on first place.
She's the brightest witch of her age, has a heart of gold and strikingly good looks. They met during their first year and since then they have built a beautiful friendship.
James has shown an interest in Lily many times before, going as far as rejecting other people trying to flirt for her.
And even though Lily used to appear mad at him for these acts, lately she seems much more pleased with him than before.
"This truly is a match made in heaven" their yearmates say.
Everyone is excited about these two, how could you not love them!!
These were the results of the poll, who do you think he will end up with? Send us an owl if you have any more information, we're dying to know!!

Hi! in regards to Hagrid and his teaching, idk if we are supposed to see it as anything other than racial campaign. I'm not sure that in-universe Hagrid was doing anything beyond "dead poets society" level extra teaching (as much as I don't like dps). Especially since its happening in the third book, where jkr actually raises the question of targeted violence and stigma
Hi! I'm assuming you're talking about the fact that Hagrid's a half-giant, but unfortunately, that isn't established until Goblet of Fire, and I just don't see it reflected in any of his interactions with the Malfoys, Macnair, or the Board of Governors in the third book. I guess you could argue that him being larger than usual is the reason that Malfoy goes after him, but I always figured it was more that he's bumbling and good-natured and has an obvious soft spot for Harry. The most we get on the idea that his size has anything to do with it is this passage in POA:
"God, this place is going to the dogs," said Malfoy loudly. "That oaf teaching classes, my father'll have a fit when I tell him." (pg.91)
Which could be read as a remark on Hagrid's size, but scans to me more like a remark on his intelligence. Then you have these passages, where Rowling spells out in the text (probably for the benefit of the many 11-year-olds reading her book) why Malfoy's hamming up his injury:
"I'm afraid he won't be a teacher much longer," said Malfoy in a tone of mock sorrow. "Father's not very happy about my injury ... and with a lasting injury like this, who knows if my arm will ever be the same again?" (pg. 100)
"So that's why you're putting it on," said Harry, accidentally beheading a dead caterpillar because his hand was shaking in anger. "To try to get Hagrid fired." "Well," said Malfoy, lowering his voice to a whisper, "partly, Potter. But there are other benefits too. Weasley, slice my caterpillars for me." (101)
Meanwhile, when Rita Skeeter reveals that Hagrid is a half-giant in Goblet of Fire, Malfoy immediately starts mocking him for it, with language suggesting this is the first time he's learned of it, and the first time most people would have suspected (half-giants being obviously uncommon):
“Well, I think this should put an end to the oaf’s teaching career,” said Malfoy, his eyes glinting. “Half-giant . . . and there was me thinking he’d just swallowed a bottle of Skele-Gro when he was young. . . . None of the mummies and daddies are going to like this at all. . . . They’ll be worried he’ll eat their kids, ha, ha. . . .” (439)
The thing is — as the above passage reveals — Rowling is not a soft touch when it comes to discrimination and bigotry. When she wants to show a character being a bigot against Group X, her go-to move is having the character loudly announce "God, I hate Group X!" So the idea that Malfoy and his father are engaging in a targeted racial campaign against Hagrid in the third book would require us to believe that Malfoy has developed a sudden vocality about his bigotry in GOF that he's never showed beforehand, despite having known or suspected that Hagrid wasn't fully human all along.
To the real point about "what's this plot doing here?", I think Malfoy and Hagrid's plotline in Prisoner of Azkaban is supposed to be a parallel to Sirius, insofar as both storylines are about innocent creatures being blamed for something because of a coward's lie. (Pettigrew's lie is that Sirius committed the murders; Malfoy's lie is that he was hurt much more seriously than he actually was.) In my reading, Prisoner is less about targeted violence towards specific groups (what groups? what violence?) than it is about how easy it is to judge based on limited information, and the failures of the establishment to deliver justice. Like all Harry Potter novels, it's incredibly suspicious and resentful of bureaucracy in almost any form, and it heavily implies that the people who work for bureaucracy are selfish, cruel, or simply disinterested in the truth.
It isn't until much later in the series that we see werewolves developed as a kind of stigmatized out-group, and when we do, I kind of doubt that JKR was meaningfully interested in them as a group unfairly afflicted by trauma and suffering; for the most part, her werewolves are cannibalistic child-eating predators, with a few, like Lupin, who are conscious and ashamed of what they are. But that's a very long, very separate post about the problems of making your subjugated class a group of literal deadly monsters.

POLITICAL RIVALS… OR SECRET BESTIES?
by Rita Skeeter
It’s been quite the political rollercoaster lately, and if there’s one thing the British public loves, it’s a bit of drama between their elected officials. But while most expected a vicious war between Prime Minister James Potter and Opposition Leader Regulus Black, what we actually got was… well, let’s just say, it’s less “House of Cards” and more “Love Actually.”
Yes, dear readers, it appears that instead of tearing each other apart like proper enemies, our nation’s most bitter rivals have instead developed – brace yourselves – a bromance.
The question is: Why? And, more importantly, how?
One might have thought that Regulus Black, heir to a political dynasty so cold-blooded that his father makes Margaret Thatcher look like a socialist, would have no time for James Potter’s bleeding-heart idealism. And yet, these two seem to have taken a bizarre turn from political foes to what can only be described as… whatever the hell this is.
Their recent debate should have been the moment when Black crushed Potter into the ground. And he tried, of course. He was cutting, ruthless, the perfect polished Tory prince. And yet, James Potter – bless him – spent most of it grinning like an idiot, cracking jokes, and, most horrifically, calling Regulus Black by a rather personal nickname. The sheer audacity of addressing one’s mortal enemy like they’re old mates at the pub is, frankly, disgusting. Worse still, Black barely reacted – no sharp retort, no disdainful correction, just a slight twitch of his jaw like a man who had accepted his fate.
Now, some say that this bromance is merely a clever tactic. That Potter, a known menace to anything resembling structure and professionalism, has made it his personal mission to unhinge Black, reducing him to a man who appears one unfortunate joke away from spontaneous combustion. Others argue that Black, so used to hiding every emotion behind an expression of mild disdain, has finally met someone so insufferable that he’s simply given up trying to fight it.
Sources (me, mostly) have noted an alarming number of suspiciously friendly interactions between the two. At a recent charity gala at the V&A, Potter was seen walking side by side with Black while making an absolutely vile joke about Rococo paintings that I cannot, in good conscience, print here. Meanwhile, Black, usually a master of restraint, was spotted laughing at something Potter said during their joint speech. Are we, as a nation, truly prepared for a world where Regulus Black finds James Potter funny?
Of course, some political analysts (not me, obviously – I report only facts) have suggested that this peculiar behaviour could be part of a larger game. That Black, while outwardly exasperated by Potter’s nonsense, is simply playing along to lull him into a false sense of security. Others argue that Potter, whose entire political career seems based on the principle of vibes, is in fact, winning, purely because nothing seems to irritate Black more than his unwavering refusal to take anything seriously.
One thing is certain: something is going on here. And I, for one, will be watching very closely. In the meantime, let’s just hope the next debate contains less banter and more actual politics. Though, given these two, I wouldn’t count on it.
Regulus stared down at the Daily Mail article, his grip on the pages tight enough to crease the paper. He had read it three times now, hoping – praying – that maybe, just maybe, Skeeter’s words would somehow make more sense upon further inspection. They did not.
Across the room, Evan leaned back in his chair, swirling his coffee with a smirk. “Well. At least she called it a bromance and not foreplay.”
