in due honor of darlington throwback weekend and i (memory) attending my first ever nascar race in person, how about piston cup throwback weekend with a couple of the drivers?

throwback weekend in darlington originally started in 2015, and because of its popularity, its made rounds every year since then as a staple in the season. i think for the piston cup, its start should be pushed to around 2008.

for lightnings first ever throwback weekend, happening at the age of 19 (near 20) in 2008, the rusteze crew would go ALL OUT making his car reminiscent of docs. he gets the blue, the accurate colours, and they get “fabulous lightning mcqueen” down the side. they get permission from PCA to move lightnings numbers to the back quarter panel just above the rear wheel well of his car, and they happily place their sponsor on the trunk of the car and on the hood where doc would usually have “twin h power”

cals throwback would probably be something similar, rather, he would do a throwback scheme to his grandfather. dinoco has had roots in his family since the PCA was founded in 1948 and his grandfather raced for the company, the owners of it being longtime family friends (as tex and strip are still to this day). however, in the 50s, dinoco had a green and red scheme that consisted of a stegosaurus. his scheme would end up being simple (akin to lightnings with doc) but rather he’d have a changed number font, a mainly green car with racing stripes up and down the sides in red, and the upper portion of the car would cut off the green and be that cream/white colour. the original dinoco logo would be placed on either of the front quarter panels, and the hood would have his numbers on either side (a red stripe down the center of the car running from the front to the back), completely reminiscent of his grandfathers car (and a wee bit of nostalgia for strip)

bobby’s throwback, since he doesnt necessarily have roots in racing, would be to octane gains original sponsor (as it, as well as dinoco, had a place in the PC in the 50s). octaine gains original colour scheme was orange, black, and white. due to the nature and simplicity of cars from the 50s, it would end up as that orangey-yellow car, with black and white numbers, along with the typical ford trim down the side (the silver trim with the white triangle in the middle as it goes down the side of the car to meet the wheel well), as ford was the make of the original car they had sponsored way back when, and bobbys ride is the COT ford fusion. octane gains logo would end up right above the rear wheel, and like cals car, the upper portion of it (from the window to the top of the car) would be white.

Hi this is a positivity post regarding alterhuman diet dysphoria versus actual biology

(unless you already know these things)

To herbivore nonhumans who don't want to/can't do a vegan or vegetarian diet but feel dysphoric about being able to digest meat:

Herbivorous animals are not unable to digest meat.

Animal matter is actually easier for a body to process than plant matter, and herbivorous species need very complex digestive systems in order to support their lifestyles. This is why cows have four stomachs; why horses practically go into critical system failure if they get even a little bit sick. Animals that live mostly by grazing actually still do need nutrients that carnivores and omnivores get through their natural diets, which is why farming supply stores sell salt licks for animals. In the wild herbivores will quite often find ways to sneak some meat into their diets by eating bugs or small vertebrates, if you didn't already know about the fun fact of deer eating baby birds. "Obligate herbivore" meaning an animal that can ONLY physically digest plants is not a real ecological term the way "obligate carnivore" meaning animal that can ONLY physically digest meat is, though you might see it in other usages (i.e., referring to an animal that relies on a plant-based diet for all of its nutrients).

If a wild deer was given access to human society, they would probably not opt for veganism for connection with their true species; they would more likely appreciate having a way to get sodium so easily. This isn't to shame anyone who does choose a vegan/vegetarian diet for species euphoria reasons, but more to reassure folks who can't, you aren't less of an herbivore.

To carnivore nonhumans who feel dysphoric that their body can't digest raw meat like wild carnivores can:

It can!

The reason you don't want to be eating raw meat like a wolf or stoat or monitor lizard is because you will get sick or you will contract a parasite, which might sound like just a different reason to feel disconnected from your species, but here's the main two things:

1. The actuality is that wild wolves and stoats and monitor lizards DO get sick and contract parasites. This is often how wolves and stoats and monitor lizards die in the wild and why ones in captivity, being fed parasite-free meat and having illnesses treated, live longer. There are raw meats you can eat safely, you just have to know where they're sourced from and that they're guaranteed not to have risks! That's why sushi is a thing, and why people say you can technically eat raw cut (not ground) beef but not pork or chicken. Cooked meat is also often tastier and easier for the body to process (cit.: Grug et al. 780,000 BCE) so that's why humans have loved their medium-well steak since they came up with it. And 2. wild predators are "able to eat raw meat" mostly because they killed it, so it's fresh and hasn't been sitting around able to pick up bacteria, the way raw meat you get at a grocery store would have. This is why a lot of prey animals have a "play dead" defense mechanism: most predators do not want to eat something that's already dead, because it might get them sick.

If a wild owl was given access to human society, they would probably not desire only the rawest of meats for connection with their true species; they would more likely appreciate having access to food that had all the pathogens cleaned and/or scorched out of it.

The World

The setting I write in (hereafter "Boralverse") is an alternate history of Earth. The original difference from our own history (hereafter "IRL") is the existence of the island of Borland (Istr Boral) between Great Britain and Denmark, inspired by the IRL existence of Doggerland.

The human pre-classical history of Borland can be summarised as:

With sea level rise about 8k years ago, Borland was cut off from the continent and from Britain (this is when Doggerland was submerged IRL); some Stone Age people remain. They leave some monuments—burial mounds, the Çadrosc labyrinth—and were farmers, but they had no writing or ironworking.

The Celts arrive in Borland shortly before they settle Britain in the second millennium BCE, taking up iron tools and establishing many tribal groups. Due to some later migration from Britain to Borland, they speak a language (Borland Celtic) which is most closely related to Proto-Brythonic.

I assume that as far as possible the history of the rest of the world is indistinguishable from the IRL history up to this point. I continue to do so while the Romans invade and settle Borland shortly after Britain, despite conceding to credulity and allowing a few classical references:

...in Ptolemy's description of the Pritannoi we can understand he referred to the Insular Kelts of Ireland, Britain and Borland as a whole... ...contrasting Hadrian's policies in Britain and in Borland is vital for understanding their different fates in the post-Classical age...

where I admit that the Roman Empire having an entire additional province should probably have some observable effects.

Once the Western Roman Empire collapses, I start properly diverging Boralverse history from IRL history. This begins with a different pattern of Anglo-Saxon migration; the two petty kingdoms of Angland and Southbar arise in western Borland, while the settlement of England proceeds slightly slower than IRL.

Historical divergence spreads through western Europe over the next few centuries, and by 1000 CE things are beginning to go off the rails all across Eurasia and North Africa. I leave the history of the Americas the same until Old World contact (via Basque fishermen stumbling across Newfoundland in 1470 CE), and likewise with Australia.

The map below shows Europe in 1120, during the Second Tetrarchy Period. At this time, Europe was unusually centralised, with four great empires: the First Drengot Empire (red), the German Empire (brown), the Second Roman Empire (purple) and the Single Caliphate (green).

In the modern era, my hope is that the Boralverse world feels fractally uncanny; at every scale something is unexpectedly different, from political borders and languages to fashion and pop culture references.

For clarity, I employ an inconsistent Translation Convention when writing from a Boralverse perspective, mostly using IRL English but peppering in calques of Boralverse English jargon for flavour, such as threshold force "nuclear power" or jalick "garment socially equivalent to a tuxedo".

The Language

The original motivation for this alternate history setting is Borlish (Borallesc), the Romance language spoken on Borland.

It picked up a few Borland Celtic loanwords from the existing population at the time of the conquest (macquar ~ Welsh magu "raise, rear"; vrug ~ Welsh grug "heather"), but was much more influenced through the first millennium by Anglo-Saxon settlement and then Norse conquest during the Viking Age. The following is an example of late Old Borlish (ca. 1240):

The Modern Borlish language has undergone spelling standardisation (most recently deprecated some irregular spellings in 1870), and contains many more Latin and Greek loanwords, along with borrowings from languages across the world.

In terms of sound changes and grammatical developments, the major points include:

Intervocalic lenition /p t k b d g/ > /v ð j ∅ ∅ ∅/: catēna > caðen "chain", dēbēre > deïr "must".

The use of ç (and c before e i y) for /ts/, and the use of g in coda to represent /j/. Along with some vowel shifts, this leads to things like cigl /tsajl/ "darling".

Total loss of final consonants in multisyllable words, including -s, which leads to:

Collapse of noun declension, including number; Borlish does not mark number on nouns, and if it wants to it uses demonstratives or simply relies of verb agreement: l'oc scuir pasc, l'ec scuir pascn "this boy eats, these boys eat".

I'm going to say it. This is my favorite animated movie ever. I just watched The Croods again for the first time in a few years and loved it even more than I remembered, which I didn't think was possible. I still haven't watched the sequel because to me there is no way to top this and I don't want to be disappointed. This movie is a masterpiece in literally every way and is twelve years old! The 2010s had some of the best movies to ever come out in my opinion. This movie is so beautiful, specifically because it isn't actually about cavemen as much as someone might think, it's about family, with some of the best family dynamic writing ever.

I know there are so many memes about Grug going around right now, which I feel is making people forget how much of an amazing character he is. In reality, Grug is possibly my favorite father character in anything. He cares so deeply about his family and does everything to protect them, and eventually realizes that accepting them for who they are (Eep specifically) is the best thing he can do to protect them, and when I eventually start a family I want to be that kind of father. When Grug basically sacrifices himself for his family brings me to tears every single time, because he cares so much about them to do so.

Additionally, Alan Silvestri takes the emotions from this masterpiece and puts them into the soundtrack so well, and it wouldn't be the same without it. I think it's one of the best film soundtracks ever. And it even has references to well known pieces like the 1812 Overture. And ending the movie with Owl City and Yuna singing "Shine Your Way" is absolutely amazing, and it uses the main theme from the soundtrack so well.

Also, this movie is likely the most nostalgic movie for me in particular because I first watched it when I was like 8 or so, and it brings back so many memories that I can't even place.

This movie is so good, because it rhymes with Grug.
