The most “boys will be boys” things the gang do

• Steve, Soda, Dally, and Darry stay walking around half naked, ESPECIALLY in the summer. Their shirts are never on. Soda’s jeans are unzipped half the time smh

• as much as they really really try, the Curtis boys are known for leaving their dirty laundry everywhere 😟 no matter how messy they can be though, Two-Bit’s room will always be exponentially worse

• one time Steve and Soda wanted to see who could eat the most chocolate cake so they each ate a whole half of a cake and threw up later

• Johnny do not be washing his clothes 😭😭😭 it’s rly not his fault but Darry will offer to wash up some of his stuff with Ponyboy’s and Johnny will be like “no thank you it’s not that bad 🙂” bros jean jacket probably carries the plague

• they literally don’t stop eating. It’s canon that the Curtis brothers all have big appetites, everyone else is just as bad. Most of their money goes to groceries bc they literally just eat and eat

• Ponyboy tries to lay in bed directly after track practice before showering bc he’s tired and Sodapop is appalled

• so so so many wrestling and football injuries. Pony’s always tripping and falling face first. Steve is a fucking pincher when they’re wrestling so Soda and Two-Bit always have little ass bruises on them from him 💀 during football Johnny is really good at slipping between people bc he can be pretty quick but one time he managed to take Steve down with him and they knocked their heads together

• Dally unfortunately enjoys driving around and yelling obscenities when he has Buck’s car. No one is off limits. He’ll trail behind Johnny and be like “ay what that mouth do” and Johnny just lets out the most defeated sigh

• Ponyboy and Curly were each other’s first kiss “for practice” and didn’t rly think much of it until they realized they’d only been kissing each other even tho they didn’t need practice anymore and never tried to get w anyone else 😭😭😭

• if Two-Bit sees any kind of animal worth catching in his mind like an armadillo or some shit he will indeed try to catch it and bring it to the Curtis house and Darry is just like if you don’t get that damn armadillo off my porch

All three Curtis brothers had a moment where they believed their brothers were homophobic bc they started dating their sweethearts (Paul, Steve, Curly) and were met with disgusted looks and heavy judgement.

None of them are homophobic, of course.

All three Curtis brothers just have HORRIBLE taste in men.

The gang played truth or dare once and it ended with Dally in jail, a potential rumble between them and the Shepard gang, Ponyboy admitting to smoking pot with Curly underneath the school bleachers, and Darry drunkenly confessing to the gang his torrid love affair with Paul

Curtis brother headcannons because I have free will 👹

All of them have secrets they think they're super sneaky about hiding from the other two. They're not.

(Post-canon) Baloney is now a banned item from the household. Darry was a little disappointed as it was good for sandwiches. Pony was relieved. Soda doesn't give a shit.

The only not hidden medications are Advil and Ibuprofen after Pony took 5 Benadryl a few to many times for safety.

Eating together is mandatory

Whoever made dinner is free of kitchen duty

Darry forces Pony to keep the door open whenever Curly is over after catching them playing Chicken.

Monopoly is banned

Darry sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night just to make sure Soda and Pony are ok

And vise versa

Spicy food has to be made seperate as Darry has a high spice tolerance, soda a medium spice tolerance, and Pony's is nonexistent

There have been more than a few times where Darry will find Pony just eating a lemon at 2am

Accomplishments go on the fridge

They own a chore chart

They use those cute clay magnets with all the foods painted on them

pony who was never much into girls. he just kinda. accepted that part of him. whatever. he just wasn't much made for romance. leave all the mushy heart stuff to soda that was plenty good by him. pony who goes years only takin a girl out once or twice to stave off any rumors or nothin. to keep his reputation. but he always goes home feelin guilty for leadin some girl on n empty where most people musta felt somethin. pony who's sixteen when curly gets outta reform. who bumps into him on random one day n looks up to catch dark curious eyes n a mouth full of teeth just as likely to spill laughter past cracked lips as to bite n thinks oh. so this is what they mean in all those stupid songs n movies n soda gigglin in bed late at night after a date. this is it.

The first time it happens, it’s in the backseat of Two-Bit’s car. They aren’t even dating — not yet, not really. Curly’s just been tagging along more lately, turning up at the Curtis house uninvited, stealing soda out of the fridge and teasing Ponyboy until his face turns pink.

They’re squished in the back with a busted speaker between them, legs tangled with empty chip bags and a spare tire. Ponyboy’s talking to Johnny about some movie they just saw, half turned, one leg tucked under him — and Curly’s head just drops.

Right into Pony’s lap.

Like it’s not weird. Like it’s his spot.

He’s out cold within a minute — mouth open, one hand curled in the fabric of Ponyboy’s jeans. Pony freezes, mid-sentence. Looks down at him like he’s been handed a sleeping stray dog.

He doesn’t move, he just lets him stay.

The second time is on the grass outside the DX.

Soda’s on shift, talking to some girl at the pump, and Curly’s stretched out in the patchy lawn like he owns the place, head tipped back, a lit cigarette forgotten between his fingers.

Ponyboy’s reading a battered paperback balanced on his leg and Curly rolls over halfway through a sentence, mutters, “Shut up, I’m listening,” even though no one’s talking.

He drops his head in Ponyboy’s lap again, curls into it like the sun’s his blanket. His hair’s damp with sweat and his shirt’s rucked up, and Ponyboy swears he’s going to burst into flames with how warm it all feels. But Curly’s breathing slows. Goes soft.

And Ponyboy keeps reading. Aloud, this time.

The third time is in the school library.

Pony’s tutoring someone, supposed to be helping a freshman with English homework, and Curly just shows up. Slides into the booth like he belongs there, yawns obnoxiously, steals Pony’s apple, and drops his head sideways onto Pony’s lap like it’s the only pillow in the world.

“Seriously?” Ponyboy whispers, already embarrassed.

Curly groans. “M’tired. Shhh.”

The freshman just blinks. “Is he—?”

“Yeah,” Ponyboy sighs. “He does this.”

He lets him stay, hand drifting down to toy with the curls at the nape of Curly’s neck. He’s snoring quietly within minutes.

The kid never comes back for tutoring again.

After that, it becomes a thing.

The couch, the front porch swing, the edge of the football bleachers during someone else’s scrimmage — wherever they are, if Ponyboy sits still long enough, Curly will find his way over and drop his head in his lap like gravity’s got a personal grudge against him.

It stops feeling weird. Starts feeling like something Ponyboy waits for. Like something he misses on days when Curly doesn’t show up.

He doesn’t say anything about it. Just keeps running his fingers through Curly’s hair, keeps still while Curly dozes like he’s never known peace except right there, wrapped in the crook of Pony’s thigh, muttering nonsense in his sleep

I love the Outsiders fandom for its ability to make everything out of little to nothing.

Paul and Darry get one paragraph in the book about them being best friends who played football and had a falling out. Now (partly thanks to the musical) these two have an entire lore, ship, and trauma, as well as Paul being a developed character.

Curly is mentioned a couple times in the book, mostly because of stupid stuff he did with Ponyboy and where that landed him. In TWTTIN, he is the one actively beating up the “protagonist”. Yet papercut is one of the most loved ships.

Even with the Pony, Cherry, Mark, Curly, and Scout friend group. Cherry never meets Mark, Curly, or Scout. Scout is a character from the TV show who really only interacts with Pony. Mark and Curly are beating each other up for half of TWTTIN. Cherry and Pony have a complicated relationship after the events of the book. These five have formed one of the most iconic friend groups in the Outsiders fanfiction.

These are just a few examples of different things that are pretty much canon to me now. There are so many different takes on the characters and events, crossovers, and different time periods which helps keep this fandom alive.
