some thoughts about amber volakis and feminism, as per 4x03 "97 seconds"

I really like that Amber is shown brute-forcing her way out of the sexist games, but... I don’t deem it to be a feminist move on her part, despite the use of such feminist language from her.

It's clear that she does see the systemic barriers that are put up, but rather than choosing not to play along/standing up for the other women, she does what will put her ahead, even if it means ousting herself.

As much as the point she makes about House not hiring women, and the likelihood of him firing all of the men being slim is not only correct, but pretty feminist to point out; the actions she takes are not.

She is making it clear that she does not want to be at an inherent disadvantage because she is a woman, as well as that she is well aware of the systemic sexism that she is up against. She makes a calculated move to combat this when she asks to be a part of the men's team, and then when she works alone.

It is not that she wants to be “treated like a man” or even that she views the men as more of her peers than the women; she actually thinks that they’re idiots. It is that she would rather be ousted completely than lay down and take what is clearly sexist treatment that, to her knowledge and (correct) assumptions, will only end with her losing in the end, no matter what she does. She wants her work to be judged on her work not on something arbitrary like games or gender.

This, I think, is pretty damn feminist. What isn’t, though, is her actions. Her way of thinking is definitely that of someone who understands how sexism affects her and women as a whole, the thing is, what she does to combat this focuses solely on her.

All of her actions in this episode are supposed to be showing us how ruthless Amber is in her pursuit of this job. The fact that she will let the other women fall victim to a sexist system that she is well aware of because she knows it will put her in a worse position to fight against the illness of House’s sexist practices rather than the symptoms, is definitely doing the job there!

It says a lot that instead of suggesting they don’t get split by gender, in defense of the women as a whole, she asks for herself to be the exception. This is pretty firmly not feminist. But it is very… White feminist. Which I think is a really interesting characterization of her.

Though, I definitely don’t think Amber is trying to be feminist here. Nor do I think her actions in this episode were supposed to be read as feminist. They definitely could have taken that route and I think that there was a deliberate choice not to. She does point out those underlying themes of sexism and misogyny; she isn’t blind to the fact that they are at play. But she also doesn’t do anything to push against that system on behalf of her fellow women; she pushes back for herself, because being a feminist is not her main character trait; being cutthroat is.

All this to say: I don’t think we’re supposed to be reading Amber as someone trying to “Do a Feminism” here, but I do think there is an active choice being made to paint her in more of a feminist lens. And that is interesting to me!

reading yj98 and like it sucks reading kon as such a capital B "BOY" BLEGHHHHH. (not that being a boy is bad. shout out to boys. but yj98 has some.....icky moments and sometimes they shine through kon) i do think there's something interesting in here in how like - being the literal clone/test tube baby of superman and being a manufactured person whose experiences of life were downloaded but never lived firsthand. how does kon experience gender, you know? does he behave the way he does because of the biased information that was downloaded into his mind? algorithms are biased by the people who make them. could this be the same? how much does kon feel pressure to perform masculinity in a certain way because he's quite literally supposed to be the replacement for superman? boy, man - some loaded fucking words for someone who is has lived very few real years outside of his lab! and on top of that? he's superboy. superman is a symbol of hope yes but he's also loads of "traditional" white, cishet masculinity super imposed on one man (whether or not clark wants! that sort of perception is placed on him no matter what!) and in the absence of superman, how does superboy carry that? idk. i'm out of good words. but much to think about *cue idk if im a boy by blue foster*

Mark stepped into the apartment, locking the door behind him with a click. He'd had to head out to run a quick errand, leaving his partner in crime to finish up making the plans for the next heist on their own.

He made his way inside and called out to let them know he was back, but was met only by the soft patter of paws as Chica came bounding up to him, tail wagging. Setting down his keys, he bent to give her a few pats and, figuring that his roommate was probably in the shower, headed over to the small living room to look over the completed plans.

He found the papers lying in a neat pile on the coffee table, maps, blueprints, and crayons set off to one side. For as long as he'd worked with them, they'd always complained about the crayons. They still used them, though.

It was as he skimmed over the newly drawn up plan that he noticed something he hadn't expected.

He glanced over the little doodle he'd left on the page: an overly simplified rendition of himself, dressed in the usual stealth garb for infiltrating museums, holding up the artefact they were currently after with a grin. And there, right beside it, in matching crayon, was a similar portrayal of his heist partner, and the words 'Yay! We did it! :D' above the pair of them.

The drawings were a little silly, really — childish even — but a smile tugged at his lips nonetheless.

He found himself gently brushing his fingertips over the markings on the paper, running over the newly added half of the doodle featuring his partner and lightly tracing the outlines.

Something coiled deep in his chest in that moment, but not unpleasantly. It was something almost eager. Something softly fond. It nestled between his ribs and lodged itself behind his heart, quiet again. He couldn't articulate it if he tried, but... he liked this feeling.

Valicer Multiamory Month, Day Ten: Meet the family (Modern AU)

We've hit the double digit days now in @polyamships's Multiamory March -- and, in a break from tradition with these "prompt fic" challenges/collections, I've stuck with the same universe for two days in a row! Mostly because when I saw today's prompt, "Meet the family," I knew I wanted to do Victor and Alice meeting Smiler's parents, Matthew and Carol Alton --

But, uh, as it turns out, I only have two universes where Matt and Carol actually show up as Smiler's parents -- the Modern AU and Valicer In The Dark. And I'd actually already written VITD Victor and Alice meeting Matt and Carol as part of the last chapter of "A Murder Shared Is A Murder Thirded" (said last chapter is not actually UP at the time of posting, but still). So Modern AU it was! XD Anyway, here's the trio arriving at the door of Matt and Carol's place, with Victor and Alice about to make an interesting discovery about the pair...

(Oh, and for reference: Carol mentioning Victor getting a special dip with no artichokes is a reference to the original "Meet The Family" set of Not-Incorrect Quotes, where Victor revealed he's allergic to artichokes in response to Smiler texting their mum to make her artichoke dip. The allergy itself is a headcanon based off an old Corpse Bride storyboard. *thumbs up*)

“Hey, Mum! Dad!”

Victor stared as Smiler practically threw themselves at their parents, wrapping them in a hug that was eagerly reciprocated. Wow...you’d never get away with that in my family, he thought, biting his lip. Mother would consider it so lower-class to actually show affection to her only child, and Father would be more interested in making some terrible joke that wouldn’t land at all… His eyes went to Alice, watching the scene with a sad, nostalgic smile. Then again, at least I have parents, so maybe I shouldn’t complain.

Smiler pulled away from their folks after a moment, grinning to beat the band – though, admittedly, they did that on a regular basis anyway. “Great to see you guys again! I’m really looking forward to this!”

“It’s great to see you!” Smiler’s father – Matt, if Victor remembered correctly – agreed, smile as bright as his child’s. He promptly turned it on Victor and Alice, walking toward them with arm outstretched. “And it’s a delight to meet you two at last! Matthew Alton!”

“Victor Van Dort,” Victor said, taking his hand (and privately hoping his handshake was firm enough). “And this is Alice Liddell.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” Alice nodded, offering her own hand in turn.

“Oh, the pleasure is all ours,” Matt assured her, pumping both their arms. “Smiler’s told us so many wonderful things about you two!”

“Anyone who makes them so happy is more than welcome in our home!” Smiler’s mother – Carol, yes – added, coming to join her husband.

“I’m glad to hear–”

Victor blinked as he realized he had to look down rather farther than he’d though to meet Carol’s eyes. “That,” he finished lamely. What – she barely comes up to Matt’s shoulder! I haven’t met anyone so short since Lord Everglot! And that was back in Burtonsville, where I’m used to people being odd sizes! Does she think I’m looming? I hope not… He hunched down slightly, trying to reduce his six-foot-three by a few inches. “T-they’ve told us a lot of n-nice things about you too.”

“Yes – I’m rather looking forward to experiencing you in the flesh, not just secondhand,” Alice said, cool as a cucumber – though Victor spotted her eyes flicking between the pair.

“Oh, us too,” Carol said, beaming. She turned and waved them through the door. “Come on in – we’ve got plenty of nibbles! And don’t worry, Victor, I made a special dip for you. No artichokes, I promise.”

“Thank you.” Victor watched as she went inside with Smiler and Matt, then nudged Alice. “She’s in heels!”

“I noticed! Tall ones too!” Alice shook her head, then smiled at him. “Well – makes our height difference look normal, doesn’t it?”

“I suppose – at least they seem nice.” Victor took a steadying breath, then started in. “Let’s just hope this goes better than when I first met Victoria’s parents.”

KuroEne AU (Summary)

I found this in my Notion docs from October 2024.

Not sure if I posted it here so I might as well.

Wasn't sure what to title this post considering the random assortment of rambles but I got the time to add to this.

I could talk about it more later, but here's a summary of my KuroEne AU.

My KuroEne AU takes place in canon-verse, but Ene can manifest in the real world by going into the motherboard via a Wi-Fi connection (located in the head of the android body that Saeru made)

(I came up with this AU in the first place back in April 2024 cuz I was trying to come up with ways for them to kiss in the real world /lh)

I'm glad I came up with such a creative and fun concept ^^ Ene being out in the real world is much more interesting for exploring her multiships' relationship dynamics and potential.

Kuroha/Saeru possesses Konoha's body much earlier in the Route (and drops Kenjirou's body much earlier), meets Ene, and proposes that he can make a humanoid android body for her.

I imagined that after all the time loop resets, Kuroha figured out a way for Ene to transfer her consciousness into a humanoid android body for certain periods of time. Whenever the body runs out of battery, she goes back to the cyber world.

Saeru is the embodiment of knowledge that possesses knowledge of the beginning of the world all the way to modern science (according to Novel Route), so he should be able to pull this off.

Kuroha/Saeru bonds with Ene, seduces his partner with carnal pleasures, and eventually becomes intimate with her.

As the Routes go on, he gets better and faster at making her body because he remembers memories of previous Routes (including past memories of being together with her). He has VERY intimate knowledge of his partner's motives, feelings, desires, etc.

And so, in each new Route, he constantly gets to add to his knowledge and experiences, and makes improvements to her body (so the battery charge goes from lasting an hour to a whole day, etc.)

KuroEne AU: Last Dance at World's End 🖤💛💙✨

I named my KuroEne AU, "Last Dance at World's End," because Kuroha/Saeru calls their intimate encounters/bouts of passion, "Dances" and "Games" and "Trysts"

It's on purpose, since it's a direct acknowledgement to Takane/Ene's "Dancer Girl" and "Gamer" themes.

Note: Takane's full online gamer name was “Lightning Dancer Ene” or “Dancing Flash Ene” (閃光の舞姫・エネ, Senkou no Maihime - Ene), where Maihime (舞姫) means “Dancer Girl” or “Dancing Princess”

KuroEne is so sexy as a ship. Like the circumstances of HaruTaka and KonoEne's context, Kuroha's omniscience and knowledge, desire, and a craving/yearning for warmth, touch, and affection and companionship on Ene's end, and the pull she feels for him because of the vessel he uses (Haruka/Konoha's body), and his intimate knowledge of her.

Cuz Saeru possesses such intimate knowledge of his partner due to his knowledge of previous Routes (timelines), he knows all their memories together, and possesses her desires and secrets, etc.

KuroEne AU: MaryEne team up against Kuroha

One of my biggest KuroEne AU Routes is a Route where Kuroha/Saeru possesses Konoha's body before the others can meet him, pretends to be an Eye Ability User (because he's in possession of Awakening Eyes), and joins the Mekakushi Dan.

He pretends to be everyone's friend while working towards his goals to kill everyone at the end, and have Mary rewind the world for the sake of keeping up his own pseudo immortality.

After killing off the rest of the MekaDan members on August 15th, Mary and Ene are the only ones left at the end, and decide to team up against him and sneak into his base (underground laboratory) to have their final confrontation with him.

Ene asks Kuroha for answers on everything she's wanted to know (his true motives to make Mary rewind the world, why he's doing all of this, why he played the game with her and made her body, etc.)

Since it's the end (grand finale), Kuroha sates her curiosity and answers her questions, and tells her his motives.

I think my KuroEne AU name, "Last Dance at World's End" is fitting. They'll give into their longing/yearning and passion for each other, one last time, before the world resets, to provide some form of closure for them.

KuroEne's Trysts

Saeru refers to their intimate encounters as "trysts"

So I imagine he uses 逢瀬 (ouse, "rendezvous; tryst; (lover's) meeting; (secret) date") and 逢引 (aibiki, "clandestine meeting (of lovers); assignation; tryst; (lovers') rendezvous")

They're not commonly used words, and kinda old-fashioned.

Describes it perfectly. A secret meeting with a lover.

Since I imagine in all Routes where Saeru doesn't meet with the rest of the MekaDan on August 15th, then he just keeps their relationship secret and meets with Ene in secret (since he lives with her)

My Ship AUs

I personally prefer dealing with all of my multiships in separate AUs. I do this for every single series I'm into, because it's much easier to work with, at least for me.

It reduces the scope of what I have to write and makes it much more doable for me, so I can just focus on my faves.

This is why I don't really delve much into MekaDan interactions in my AU until the "end game" of a Route, since I mainly just focus on the ship itself.

This is also why I separate my Ene multiships (ex. KuroEne, AyaEne, MaryEne) into different AUs.

Unless I'm writing an Ene harem on the side for funsies (which is completely separate from my main AUs for them), since it's fun to think of Kuroha -> Ene <- Ayano (especially since those two have a tense dynamic)

I'm very passionate about my fave characters and ships, and it's fun and good to explore fun and interesting/compelling dynamics, so I make them the face of my profiles cuz they're what I plan to center my fan works around.

That's why, for my ship AUs, it's focused mainly on the ship itself. But relevant secondary/background characters or ships may make cameo appearances in my AUs.

For example, in my KuroEne AU, HaruTaka (and KonoEne, depending on the Route and if Ene got to meet Konoha before Saeru possesses him or not), are relevant background/secondary ships (for obvious reasons) to set up my AU.

The 9/6 Trio Ships 🖤💛💙

I personally prefer KuroEne over KonoEne, due to my ship tastes (what I look for and favour in ships)

And also because I'm not really satisfied with how... one-sided and "unrequited" KonoEne feels in canon.

(I love them too ofc, but I have my preferences. I prefer dark and intense ships, while HaruTaka and KonoEne are very soft and gentle.)

KonoEne hardly have time to interact and meet in the main plot BECAUSE we basically only see them interact on Death day!!! That's not enough time to see how their actual dynamic works with each other.

It's definitely a criticism of mine (irt KagePro's writing), that KonoEne, the ship that is the alt version of HaruTaka, hardly gets any meaningful interactions in canon-verse.

Minimal interactions - hardly anything for the two of them (Konoha and Ene) to reflect on. And it never gets brought up again.

How about the fact that Saeru has an uncanny resemblance (in appearance) to Haruka, too, not just Konoha?

It's so odd that Ene only makes the comparison to Konoha in MR1 ❓

Especially with Haruka's ponytail here.

It's true that HaruTaka works better as a ship dynamic in comparison to KonoEne.

Haruka and Kuroha/Saeru are the perfect counters to Takane and Ene respectively, because those two can actually manage to meet her competitiveness and level of intensity as characters.

I prefer Kuroha/Saeru for Ene because he perfectly fits my character and ship needs for dark eroticism (via a villain/antagonist character who serves as an "obstacle" to their S/O who clashes with them) 🥰

And also because he would be more reactive and confrontational around Ene.

Like Saeru brings out the competitive side of Ene that doesn't really come out with KonoEne imo. So KuroEne would both be pretty reactive and confrontational with each other.

I have a craving for competitiveness and tension in my ships, and Saeru fulfills my tastes.

He is perfect to be paired with my wife ✌️

This is why I personally prefer KuroEne and HaruTaka the most out of the 9/6 pairs.

Unlike Konoha (imo), Kuroha/Saeru and Haruka can actually manage to match Ene and Takane's level of intensity and competitive nature as charas.

I always felt like Ene purposefully imposes and creates a distance between her and Konoha.

The distance that Ene imposes is not only cuz of her tendency to avoid confronting her more negative feelings and keep them to herself (to avoid worrying others), but also directly a response that comes from her grief and regrets over Haruka.

She wants to try to protect/shield her wounded heart and hurt feelings, and her love, and desperately hold onto those feelings (because she can't move on from her past memories, those happy times)

Kuroha/Saeru is the only KagePro chara that can provide the kind of tension and conflict that I prefer in my ships.

Saeru aligns perfectly with my Meow meow mf character preferences (as a chara with dark urges) and my ship tastes, so he's a natural choice/pick for my wife 💖🌟✨

KuroEne's personalities/dynamic mesh well together 🖤💙

Their personalities are pretty balanced, so they don't clash too much, which is why they honestly work way better than KuroTaka (whose personalities are pretty imbalanced. They'd clash too much)

I also prefer that Saeru is more dangerous, thrilling, and intense, and also more reactive towards Ene.

KuroEne is a ship that's filled with conflict and tension and hostility, due to Ene's conflicted feelings...

One reason that I love them is because the ship just has higher stakes.

The realization that Ene has that her lover is the one bringing about the end of the world is especially tasty... The world is hanging in the balance here.

I love imagining them riling each other up on purpose... Saeru teasing Ene to see her flustered reactions, and Ene getting bold and feisty with him... 🥰💞

Saeru's existence as a character just solves the issue that KonoEne would run into, with Ene putting a wall around herself.

Saeru would immediately see through and be able to figure out Ene's true feelings. He can read her feelings better than anyone else can, exactly because of his knowledge, observational skills, and ability to read people.

Someone that can see past Ene's outer exterior/front that she shows to people, and confront her so that she can be more honest...

When it comes to Ene, Kuroha/Saeru works the best for that. 😌

Especially when Kuroha/Saeru is the type that's insanely good at reading people. It's his specialty. Ene is done for /lh

Saeru knows exactly how to bait/goad people to get under their skin to get what he wants (and get reactions out of them)

This is why I say that Kuroha/Saeru weaponizes knowledge. He wields words as weapons, too. Knowledge is power.

And he possesses the most knowledge in the entire world. ✌️

Like this character (Saeru) just solves all problems for me (other than the ones he created lmfao) with his wit and character set-up.

(Yeah there's the murder and betrayal ofc and Saeru encouraging his S/O's descent into moral corruption by feeding their carnal urges, as well as causing the deaths of their loved ones. His love only results in destruction at the end - his love could only manifest in this way. But that only makes them more interesting to me...) ☺️

Saeru talks with Konoha

I wrote a dialogue script about this that's still in the drafts.

So I'll sum it up for now.

I feel like, at some point, Saeru would be the one to point out to Konoha (similar to how he talks to Konoha in his mind in MR2) about Konoha's selflessness and lack of exclusitivity of affection

Saeru tells Konoha that the way he treats everyone as just a "friend" is exactly what he finds so boring about him.

And because he (Saeru) witnessed Ene's disappointment/disatisfaction about this in previous Routes (since Ene would definitely want to be treated as more than just a friend, but wouldn't know how to express it)

Saeru begins to muses to himself. The cause of this disatisfaction? Obviously, it must be because of everything that he (Konoha) lacks...

What he deems as Konoha's "defective" need to protect his friends even at the cost of his own life.

And so he just tries to take away everything Konoha had/gained for himself.

"You're always so equal and impartial. How dreadfully dull."

"Don't worry... I'll take your place..."

"I'll take care of your most beloved one."

My Fave Ship Tastes

I have an obvious Antagonist Meow Meow x Soft empathetic S/O bias (all of my main fave ships are this ship trope LMAO)

I love ships that are intense and dangerous and full of conflict and tension. I love competitiveness for my ships.

My chara prefs: That's why I favour evil meow meow mf charas with dark urges. I favour the charas that are the most interesting to read/watch. Morally gray charas and villains have such theatrical performances, it's like watching a stage show. And they are often the most interestingly written/designed charas.

With my ship tastes, I prefer ships that are darkly erotic.

I love dark and twisted charas (as long as they're compelling).

I love sadistic meow meow mfs with a desire for domination and control (in general and in bedroom intimacy) 🥰

The intensity and dangerousness of their dynamic is exactly what appeals to me about them, and I think this aspect of having more tension and conflict, and/or intensity and danger, is present in all of my main ships.

My favourite type is when the Meow Meow Mf chara is a menace to the world and/or their lover 🥰

So basically, I prefer when one or both charas are trying to kill each other (and/or, others)

idea for a joke about Falin masking in an opposite way from Laios (Who really doesn't mask at all, from what I've seen) because her default expression is eyes closed and faint smile and people make incorrect assumptions about that and don't realize she isn't necessarily communicating anything in particular because they don't get how she's actually expressing herself so Marcille assumes she is communicating approval and/or affection for her until Laios informs her that Falin always smiling around her doesn't necessarily MEAN Falin is smiling at her specifically, that's just how she looks normally

(he does indicate that Falin DOES like her, but she's not expressing it in a way Marcille has learned to notice yet)

but i honestly don't know enough about how Falin emotes in canon to be sure if this is a canon compliant joke or not

What made Torrent believe Gengar anyways?

He didn’t believe Gengar at first, but after a while of being on the run with Calypso, he began having nagging thoughts questioning whether it was worth risking his own life in order to protect someone he hasn’t known for very long. Calypso might be his closest friend, but does he even know her? She says she doesn’t remember anything about being a human, but what if that’s a lie, and she’s just been using him this whole time? Does she even care about him?

The final nail in the coffin was Torrent realizing that Gengar’s description of how despicable the human who abandoned Gardevoir was matched the wording Calypso used when speaking about herself almost exactly.

the trophies for the 2024 dutch gp are funny looking, but now that i could make out the words on them, the more i read, the more my heart sank.

it applies to all of them, to varying degrees, sure, but still.

so many sacrifices were made, are being made, for their dream to become reality, to be the best of the best, to rise above all. i have so much respect and admiration for that, but also so saddened by it, thinking of all the things they lost and had to overcome. things i could never have done, had failed in trying, and wouldn't ask of anyone, yet they went through it all. they all paid the cost.

like, these are all concepts we are aware of, that they themselves are aware of. once again, it's the cost of making their dream a reality. they know what they are getting into, we know what they are getting into. yet… for them to be laid out like this, as a tangible object in these drivers' arm…

when i look at max, charles and lando holding the trophy high above their head, sun shining upon them radiantly as a sea of people cheer together in celebration of their achievement, i see it as the three of them triumphantly screaming "look at what i have overcame!".

when they cradle it in their arm, i see it as them nursing invisible wounds. physical, mental, and emotional wounds that they have collected over the years, some they got from when they were still so young, tiny little kids barely reaching their adult selves' waist, yet still ache til this day, because those wounds never truly healed, because it never really got a chance to, because it's an ongoing battle.

there's also the reality of knowing they are raising those trophies high today in victory, but comes morning, and the process repeats.

like i said previously, it applies to all of them, not just max, charles, and lando. anybody else on the grid could be on that podium today holding the trophy, and these thoughts would probably still gonna enter my head. it's inspiring and humbling. it was a sobering experience.
