Oh buddy you’ve just opened up the oversharing floodgates

Ok so basically, the professor I’m interning under does a lot of work with Sygnathids (pipefish, seahorses, sea dragons). And currently there’s not a lot of literature in their reproductive cycles. Plus, most studies have field collections so you don’t really know what happened to them before you got them. What their social hierarchy is.

What she wants to do is over the summer (once we finally frankenstein together an adequate marine aquarium system) is get a bunch of pipefish and then, well, breed them. The whole time we’ll take blood and brain samples to get a measure of their hormone levels. And hopefully construct a timeline of what each hormone is doing throughout both male and female reproductive cycles.

We were all allowed to choose a specific hormone to study and I chose my boy arginine vasotocin (AVT). We’re not really sure what it does specifically in pipefish. But in other species we noticed that it tends to play a huge role in dominance. In dominant and subordinate fish, it has higher concentrations in different nerve/sections in the brain. Specifically, the hypothalamus. But if you inject AVT into them, because those regions are already full as far as I understand it enters the “opposite” regions. Making subordinates more aggressive and dominants more chill.

Also, if there is a sudden shift in the hierarchy (ex: the lead male dies) other fish’s AVT levels will spike. In some fish like cleaner wrasses and clownfish, the dominant female will actually begin to change sex to fill that power vacuum. While in others, if a male ends up on his own, the AVT increase will change him to female so he can hopefully get accepted into someone else’s harem.

Pretty sure sex change won’t happen with pipefish, but it’s still fascinating stuff.

So the hope of this project is that we -or I guess, I- will get a better idea of how AVT plays a role in the female social hierarchy. Especially since some pipefish species have females competing for mates, while others the males compete for the right to be impregnated.

Unfortunately, I’m a college junior so I’ll probably graduate before we get to actually do any cool immunostaining 🫠🫠🫠
