Cut Chapter from Blood Tournaments! (Part 3 of 4)
Here's the third part! Please enjoy!
Shadows form just outside the stained glass of the old church, a menacing foe lurking about to strike us. Jasmine and I exchange rifles as I check to see how many bullets I have left. Five. I'll have to make them count.
That’s when my heart drops. Within this cathedral is a crowd of peasants. Women, children, elders - all huddled and terrified as the soldiers begin to beat down on the door. In between them and us is a man in a animal hide outfit with a raccoon hat, holding a rifle similar to that of the enemy soldiers outside. He’s trying to calm them down as we march in and surround them.
“Well ain't this just a fine mess we find ourselves in,” Titus says as I pull out my Ken. It shines brightly from the Photon beam around its blade, illuminating the faces of the peasants behind us. I quickly sheathe it again as I hold my rifle at the ready.
“Circle formation,” Adam orders as the door creaks and bows from the relentless enemy. Some of the peasants behind us whimper at the sound of the enemies’ shouting and the pounding on the door. Gwen and William take their positions beside Adam as William says, “‘You are my war club, my weapon for battle -  With you I shatter nations, with you I destroy kingdoms.’”
Finally, the old wood door gives way and the soldiers come flooding into the chapel. The first head I see explodes as I pull the trigger, blinding some of the men beside him with his blood. A clamorous jumble of gunshots and shouts mix as we shoot down the enemy. No matter how many we shoot, though, more and more soldiers rush into the chapel. Just as my gun runs empty and a soldier charges me with his bayonet, the man in the raccoon hat bashes his head with the end of his rifle. I drop my rifle behind me and pull out my Ken, slicing through the first soldier I see. The screams of the wounded and dead fill the air and clash with the sounds of guns, foot steps, and shouts to become one loud clamoring noise.
The seconds turn to minutes, all of us using our melee weapons once our guns ran dry. I think of nothing else except to cut down any who dare cross my path. One by one, the soldiers fall to my feet as we slowly begin to push back the enemy towards the door of the chapel. John slices through two soldiers simultaneously as he slides across the floor. I look over at Beth just as she cuts off the heads of eight soldiers - all in one swift stroke of her sword.
Adam shouts as he cuts down another, “Don’t give up, Spartans! Keep it up!” Jasmine bumps into my back and flashes me a quick smile before she throws a knife deep into the skulls of one of the soldiers. Her smile gives me a dangerous stirring in my chest, the kind that gives me a sense of craving. I shake my head and smirk before I continue to fight.
After what feels like an eternity of fighting, the enemy is pushed out of the chapel as the last man falls. I look around to see that the others made it. In the corner, however, lies the body of the man in the raccoon hat, dead with two enemy soldiers having been slain by his knife. If I had the time, I'd give him a bow of respect.
“Good work, Spartan Team, but you've got another wave incoming.” Coach says as we all regroup.
“Do we have an objective here, Coach, or are we just fighting for fun here?” John asks almost sarcastically as we try to catch our breath.
“Your mission is to survive and to get the civilians out of the chapel alive through the backdoor of the chapel, so hop to it!” Coach replies as the comms fall silent again. Rushing to the door of the chapel, I look out and find that the next wave of soldiers is charging towards us in the distance.
