teddy was born old. he was old when I got him and old when he passed away. he was definitely 3, or maybe even 30. he didn't like me that much but he loved his brothers, especially Nugget and Enoki. I had a lot of time with him but it hardly feels like enough. Rest easy little Ted 💖

Enoki loved to run. It's like he heard Teddy was gone and decided to run off after him and Nugget.. He never liked me much but it was OK, he was funny and loved to sleep in a weird way. We chose you because you were the only rat sleeping in a cage of like 60. I love you Enoki, I hope you know that. Rest easy 💗

Hey! I am absolutely in love with your ratties (I am the CEO of Beans Stans btw) and I've been thinking about getting dwarves one day. However, my friend told me that they look like a breed that could be at a higher risk of health problems or shorter lifespan due to genetics, like many other pet breeds (eg. Pug puppies) Is that true? I love how tiny they are, but I am heartbroken every time my pet dies, and because of that, I avoid adopting any pet breeds that may be more prone to health problems due to their race. Hi there! I'm glad you love them! I love them too- here's what I know...

Apparently the dwarf gene is a naturally occurring mutation- unlike pugs or other animals bred to enhance the thing that fucks them up dwarf rats are just sorta like that. I've had vets dismiss URIs thinking that the inside of the dwarf rat must be deformed and squished- but that rly isn't the case as far as my research has gone. They are small not from genes- but from a lack of growth hormone that keeps them tiny- and less prone to most of the cancers that plague standard sized rats.

I think a really hard truth to accept with rats especially is you can give them the absolute best care and they can still succumb to an infinite amount of possible illnesses. I'm sure your friend is only trying to sound on the up and up about animal welfare but I can assure you, the dwarf rat is no more inhumane than owning a female rat u know is gonna get mammary tumors lol. they are prone to getting chunky because they are aware of how small they are/ still have the drive of a normal sized rat so mixing them up with standards is always like. I mean I wouldn't do it unless u had to the novelty of small and big rat wears off after one gets hurt by something that wouldn't phase a normal rat lol.

all in all I'd say do ur research! there's lots of info about them online- I imagine female dwarf rats are probably the sweetest little things ever (I've only had males). here's a breakdown for u

currently truffle is my oldest rat- I got him in early 2021. he's never been ill but he is constantly trying to be the fattest thing that's ever lived ( now he just is skinful)

onion has never been ill other than the eye thing

beans has never been ill other than the eye thing

Nugget teddy and enoki were pretty old, neither had illness until they both passed from a zymbals tumor at 2. all were related so that was Def like. a breeder issue. I'm pretty sure Cheezers also had a ZGT but it wasn't in the same area as the others.

pear-6 months old PT , star- 1 yr and some change. heart failure/ ri. , marsh 2 year, not sure , we think maybe he had a tumor in his head somewhere. Mr.peach- 2 and a half years.sudden onset ri after being treated for a mouth ulcer caused by malocclusion. Regis (1yr) had a tumor the size of his body- had to be pts. Gabbogool (6 months probably)(dwarf) died of an awful RI that he had probably had long before I took him home.. Teddy, Nugget, Enoki all died at the age of 2 of zymbal gland tumors on the same ear. Cheezers died of what I suspect was a zymbal tumor as well at 2.

it rly seems like either rats never have a RI or just have them constantly I have had rats from a few sources now and I'm still trying to find a connection....

any rat I've had that's been aggressive it's been very obvious so I'm very ??? about mysterious injuries. they were happening before when teddy was the evil king so it could be him enoki onion nugget or meringue ... frustrated cuz I feel like if I had gotten meringue when I was supposed to originally he would've been too young to upset the rat balance....

peach- hooded variegated classic black cream lab rat lookin ass

teddy- cinnamon agouti rex? maybe? probably

nugget- confirmed double rex beige agouti probably

regis- husky son of a bitch

truffle - black self. easy

cheezers.- uhhh... wedge blaze? I can't remember what the face zigzag is called

mac- same as cheezers but in rex

beans- blue agouti - possibly Irish

enoki- no idea, a Merle or a marble? maybe?? ruby eyed

onion- marble rex

olive- special, unique, effervescent rattus rattus :)

cheezers- hangs out, moves food, grooms himself near me every 5 minutes, never wants to go back but is easy to put back. one of God's little tests

truffle- hangs out, begs for food, starts fights he can't win, lick lick lick lick. easy to put back or goes back on his own

beans- part of the good boy trio - like a spider. Roams the whole room at an incredible speed but warps back to the bed often. Rips up clothes in my drawers. easy to put back

enoki- leaves the cage last, never notices everyone's gone. often tries to come out after everyone's been out for hours, and when he does come out he goes and runs on his other wheel the entire time unless teddy decides he isn't allowed to do so. goes back on his own

teddy- lurks underneath the main cage or the spare waiting to fight with whoever walks by- hates going back. Hard to catch, slippery

onion- spends entire free roam looking for somewhere to burrow into (usually the sheets at the end of the bed), very hard to catch and put back but easy to find

mac- little freak, runs all over. approaches timidly to recieve a little treat every so often. Impossible to catch better to close the cage on him when he goes back for water

nugget- rarely leaves his cage- but when he does he causes nothing but chaos. climbs everything. fights with everything. knocks over all my med bottles with no remorse. Goes back on his own after 30 min

mr.peach- too old to get wild, comes out and patrols the floor until he gets a treat and then he goes back

oughhh there's lit nothing better than releasing all of my beasts into my room and watching them play!!! I love when they come visit me because they want to !!! the love of little rats is the best love of all !!!! I love theeeeeeem!!!
