A collage of some of Peter’s myriad facial expressions.
“I’ve always made funny faces, I guess. It’s just that more people are seeing them now!” - Peter Tork, Flip (1967) “[In Greenwich Village,] Peter had a way about him. I mean, he could soften up the toughest audience. If people didn’t like his serious songs, he would play his funny ones. If they didn’t like his funny ones, he would play romantic ones. If they didn’t like his romantic songs, he would sing his ‘provocative’ ones. Usually, the audience was pretty warmed up by then — but just in case it wasn’t, Peter would throw in a spate of funny gags, followed by a series of the most comic faces one could ever see.” - Bruce Farwell, 16’s The Monkees: Here We Are (1967) “Peter was called into the kitchen for a phone call, after which he made faces at the baby (Jason [Nesmith]).” - article by Judy Sims, Disc & Music Echo, February 1969

Peter Tork during The Monkees' summer tour, 1967.
“What does [Tork] want to communicate? ‘Love. I don’t mean it to sound corny,’ he said pleadingly. ‘Dogmatism is leaving the scene. Youth is examining all the old-time premises that used to be taken totally for granted — sexual mores, artistic mores. And in Russia, the revolutionary clichés. I think there’s a genuinely democratic society just over the horizon. I hope so. I hope it achieves freedom and peace.’ […] ‘I think you should stand for what you believe in. I stand for love and peace. To my way of thinking, they’re the same thing,” - New York Times (October 2, 1966) “If someone used to snarl at me, I would find myself snarling back until I could get off by myself and think, why did this person express anger toward me? Was he responsible for his feeling or did I create the situation that made him express it? And if I met his anger with love instead of a snarl, wouldn’t it make me feel better and happier instead of leaving me depressed and discouraged? More and more I try to meet anger with love. The world is love. Sooner or later everyone will love everyone else. That is the future. I think people are so hipped up on the point of view, us against them; it’s all a hangover from the days of the left wing or fascism. It’s not the way things are anymore; it’s just us.” - Peter, interviewed by Edwin Miller for Seventeen (August 1967) “Oh, I thought the New Dawn had come [in 1967]. The Dawning of the Age of Aquarius. So didneverybody else. We thought everything was just going to be roses from here on out. But you have to do that. Those of us who were young and innocent and open and thrilled to be part of the age were not able — couldn't have mustered the vision – to see that it was a passing thing and that it would eventually turn around.” - Peter Tork, interviewed by Bruce Pollock for When The Music Mattered: Rock in the 1960s (1984) “Remember that in the 60's the political officeholders had lost all touch with the needs of the nation…kind of like the Bush administration now. […] Those of us who were truly interested in liberty, fraternity and equality, however, knew we were onto something good and real. What had been called democracy was, and to some extent still is, a pretext for wrapping the will of the greedy and aggressive in a mantle of public acquiescence. Now, the business of wresting power away from those who make a specialty of wielding it will be a long and protracted struggle, with a lot of setbacks along the way. The outlines of the new style of governance are only dimly perceivable, and won't become clear for a long time to come.  In the meantime, our job is to practice the principles of fairness and service to the extent possible. One thing is clear: there is a much higher joy in service than there is in acquisition of wealth.  (Remember that it isn't money that's the root of all evil, it's the love of money.)  Hanging together in brother — and sisterhood is so happy-making you want to sing right out loud. Yeah, I feel the same about those ideas as I did then…in case you couldn't tell. heheheh, Peter” - Ask Peter Tork (2008)
