Some Thoughts on 007 First Light

After some time to reflect, the idea of a young Bond is growing on me. Even Zack Snyder has expressed interest in directing a Bond movie featuring a Bond in his 20s. A young Bond in his mid-20s could generate interest in the series among younger audiences and refresh the franchise.

I like that Bond’s character model resembles a very young version of Ian Fleming’s Bond, with grey-blue eyes and the thin vertical scar on his right cheek. This design continues to grow on me.

I’m enjoying the nods to classic Bond films and the hint of a Ken Adam-style lair for the villain. A rogue 00 agent as the main antagonist is intriguing, and I hope he has some form of physical scarring. Grotesque foreign villains are classic Bond staples. Bond villains are often either campy or impotent figures, jealous of Bond’s vitality. Their grand Ken Adam-style lairs project grandiosity but ultimately become playgrounds for Bond to destroy.

I would prefer M to be a man. At this point, a young Bond being scolded by a female M might not resonate well with audiences, particularly young men. Dame Judi Dench was an exception; she was wonderful in the role during the Brosnan and Craig eras. A male M, however, could foster a stronger bond with a young Bond, serving as a surrogate father figure. In Fleming’s novels, Bond’s relationship with M starts with great love and admiration for the “old man,” only for cracks to appear in Dr. No.

There’s no need to make Miss Moneypenny look mousy. She’s an attractive woman with whom Bond flirts, and her appearance should reflect that. She should be presented as modest yet incredibly desirable. To clarify, my comment is not about her ethnicity—that’s not an issue.

Bond is a pulp hero and a male fantasy figure. The target audience is men, both young and old. The franchise should lean into this. Bond is a character through whom masculine desires and dreams are expressed. The classic films and Fleming’s original novels, often described as the “autobiography of a dream,” embrace this fully.

Bond is also depicted as a modern St. George, slaying the dragon and rescuing the maiden—a recurring motif in the books.

These are my ramblings as a Bond fan. My best wishes to the entire development team at IO Interactive. As a Bond fan, I hope for a great James Bond game (and a great Bond movie in the future!).

The game reminds me of Lara Croft Survivor and serves as a reboot for the famous spy. Didn't we just finish this with Craig's run? Connery, Lazenby, and especially Moore all had a blast playing camp! Will we EVER see another James Bond who Adam West could have easily played to cheer us all up from the depressing times we find ourselves in, or are we forever more trapped with dark knights? On a lighter note, I will say that the new Bond, in the game, looks incredibly attractive and seems very charming. I simply miss having fun while watching the franchise. But of course I'm old school. Perhaps Bond simply isn't made for people like me anymore, and I find that to be a crying shame.
