hiii it's @popatochsp at it again with yet another AU askblog. woooo
send an ask to any of the ten prisoners or the warden and I'll draw them answering to the best of their ability.
Rules will be as follows:
Don't send NSFW asks into here. Suggestive jokes and such are fine but anything that makes me personally uncomfortable will be deleted or blocked
You don't need to know anything about Danganronpa or Milgram to interact
Asks about ships are fine, but I plan to keep things vague regarding romantic feelings/pairings in this AU so don't harass me about it
This is a story that doesn't take place in the Danganronpa universe. Each character has been rewritten into the role of the prisoner from Milgram that matches their number. What this means is that not everything about these characters will be accurate to either canon. Don't harass me about my choices for this AU.
As Milgram is a currently ongoing series, plot elements, interpretations and theories may change at any time. This also affects my writing, as I use the story as a sort of track for my own to follow and pull ideas from. If any plot inconsistencies arise don't be too bothered haha, this story is very much still in development.
The same goes for designs. My designs aren't fully finalized so uhhhmm ignore any inconsistencies that pop up. for my own sanity.
You can ask the characters anything but they might not tell you everything. On a similar note, I won't be explicitly revealing the crimes of the characters as that ruins a lot of the fun for me haha. Ask whatever you like but don't expect a clear, guaranteed answer.
You can also ask me anything about the story or my ideas as long as it's clear that the ask is addressed to the mod :)
I'm very busy a lot of the time so I might take a while to reply to asks. I set this up mainly for my own enjoyment so don't take this personally.
I will delete or block any asks that I personally want to as well.

3/25 Cyborg 009 The Stage Short Recap
Spoilers ahead for those who haven't watched the announcement themselves.
Right off the bat we got a sneak peak at the theatrical poster! Not sure how I was expecting 005 and 008 to be handled, but the brown face is disappointing and certainly alienating to global fans of color.
However, the costumes are beautiful and the contrasting pant/coat combo works great. I really love the athletic cut and quilted details on the coats. Ivan is not surprisingly, a prop doll in this production. Personally to me this means we have a 50/50 chance of him either being occasionally lifted by stage ninjas for 'levitating' effects or they just hook him up to wires and let him free like Asamov intended. Only time will tell...
We also got our first glance of the new cyberpunk redesigns of 0010+ and 0010-!
With stage adaptions especially I think it is good to treat them as their own canon. With that in mind I am curious to see how they flesh out the rest of the plot through costume design. My initial reaction was that they reminded me of Team Magma and Team Aqua grunts from older pokemon games. They are very fresh and stylish though, which I think is a good contrast to how formal and outdated Gilmore is presented.

It was revealed that certain performances will also conclude with character specific special events, and include character postcards as well. Very jealous of the folks who get to see this live, and more so for those that attend a photo op!
The interviews with Ivan are sure to be interesting... I am curious to see if they have Nanami interviewing the doll or Ivan's voice actor. I guess we will have to wait and see lol.
To wrap things off the main cast did a short introductory performance, and boy did I try to get some good screen grabs.
How are we feeling about twinkified 002? His lil ponytail moment was a surprise but seems more appropriate for complicated choreographed fight scenes.
Francoise seems to be the newest siri update in this canon, but damn if she doesn't make it look good.
I know the first thing the costume department is doing is adding velcro to that scarf! It just couldn't keep up lol
,':^/ I just want to know who decided the patchy brown face was fine but drew the line at his hands matching. I just want to talk
Changs actor has a few stage position issues but carried on with so much confidence it was almost a non-issue. I am also so impressed if that is a) a hairpiece or b) his real hair he committed to have for the play.
The bloke himself, had an intro as exciting as Francoise but you could tell they were also very excited to play the part. I am probably the most excited to see 007 and 009 perform from this intro alone.
,':^/ if someone doesn't take the bronzer away from him I will get the spray bottle...
Would love to hear others impressions, opinions, and thoughts! Do you like the styling of the play or is it too many degrees removed from the source material? Are you excited to see it or was the news of a play for the 60th anniversary not what you were hoping for?

Animator Hiroshi Watanabe’s Interview
This is an interview with one of Studio Live’s main animators, Hiroshi Watanabe. For more on Studio Live and Hiroshi Watanabe, I recommend reading my previous post on Minky Momo.
This interview goes into his start in the industry, the hardships of being an animator in Japan, and some technical tidbits. Although conducted in mid 1980s, most of what is mentioned here still holds waters today, and it’s interesting to see what changed and what didn’t from that time.
First published in スタジオライブの本・らでいっく (1) (Studio Live’s Book Vol.1). Translation by me. I’m not the most experienced translator nor am I excellent in Japanese, and although I think I managed to properly translate this since it’s not that hard or complicated of an interview, I’ll provide the original interview in case someone wants to check my translation for errors, for which I’d be pretty thankful actually.
Sorry for the long intro, here’s the original interview in Japanese.
-Moderator: Today we will be hearing animator Hiroshi Watanabe’s story since joining Studio Live up to the present day.
-Ashida (Toyo, Live’s Predsident): My, aren’t you serious.
-Moderator: It’s just kinda an official thing isn’t it *laughs*. Anyway, let’s start. First, can you tell us something from the time you left Kumamoto to Tokyo to join Studio Live?
-Watanabe: I was making anime by myself beforehand, but I had no idea how to draw in-betweens. Joining the company and using the tap for the first time made me see how real work really is different. At that time, 1000 drawings was the normal output of an in-betweener, but after all my effort it took me around 3 months to draw that much.
-Moderator: 1000 drawings in 3 months, how good is that?
-Ashida: Fairly fast I would say.
-Watanabe: Yet Matsushita (Hiromi) drew that much in one month and a half… so at that time my abilities weren’t really good enough, and there was the tough in-betweens check; no matter how many times I redraw it doesn’t get approved. Lines are a bit dirty, erasing remains are visible… really small stuff. I had my own thoughts of course, and with that happening I felt like the people on the other side just couldn’t understand. It’s really frustrating, but you still need the money to eat so you keep on drawing… such situations are pretty tough.
-Moderator: “I drew those in-betweens that way because it’s the way I do it” or something like that?
-Watanabe: Right. I didn’t want to admit that I lacked the skills at all. That was definitely the case, but the fact that I had the mentality of “it’s my way of doing things” was… frustrating.
-Moderator: Back then, and even now...
-Watanabe: No, thinking about it now, I’d say that period was normal. Yet back then, all I had in mind was “I’ll make them accept what I’m making”. And then I looked at what the key animators made and thought how different it was, which made me wish even more to become a key animator myself.
-Moderator: The thought of wanting to make an anime with your own sense...
-Watanabe: Back then, all of Live’s projects were adult shows. That’s why they seemed to lack the power. Although such projects are actually harder, I wanted to swing the camera more and move things around. Thus I wanted to become a key animator as fast as possible, and worked hard to achieve the goal of 1000 drawings.
-Moderator: Is it the same for everyone?
-Ashida: Not really, but I’d love if all of Live’s staff were like that. It’s a matter of future prospectives. Do you want to do in-betweens forever? Or become an ordinary key animator? An excellent key animator? An animation director maybe? Everyone is different.
-Moderator: And Watanabe wanted to become a key animator quickly.
-Watanabe: Correct. That’s why I, although not directly related, was so motivated to draw the 1000 sheets and become a key animator quickly and make the company acknowledge me, which enabled me to do just that.
-Moderator: So how long did you do in-betweening for?
-Watanabe: I joined the company in April and did in-betweening till October. “Cyborg 009”’s first episode was my first time drawing key frames.
-Moderator: Not too long, huh?
-Ashida: It was actually a little too fast? But then, he was our prodigy. It’s not about drawing nicely, it’s more about instinctively knowing what anime is.
-Watanabe: Why did I want to become a key animator back then? Ashida-san wanted to show youngling’s power, pent-up emotions and new strength and abilities in “Cyborg 009”. I was there anyway so it was more like “we will give you a chance then” type of thing.
-Ashida: As I said, the longer you do it the harder it becomes. At first, doing what you want is fine, but in 3 years time a wall will come, overcoming that will give you another 3 years before the next wall, until you reach a point where the wall comes every year.
-Watanabe: At that time, maybe because of being young, but I had the power to do anything. Everything I did was fun. In “Cyborg 009” or “Blue Bird” I overdid even the simplest scenes. It was all pretty interesting back then, be it anime itself or key animating itself… Then came “Arale-chan”, and after that came a time when I started paying attention to character consistency (looking the same), but getting full of myself I always thought what I did was fine and didn’t put in the effort to make them look consistent.
-Moderator: “I don’t mind if they don’t look alike. It looks fine the way it’s” type of mentality?
-Watanabe: I mean, Ashida-san was going to correct them. But I wonder if “Blue Bird” was the last project I did with my youth power. A bit after that I started feeling as if my power was fading away.
-Ashida: Well, it wasn’t about losing power, rather more about having to do the same thing for a long period of time. If you can’t overcome that, then… You just can’t stay a promising young animator forever.
-Moderator: What are your thoughts when you watch “Blue Bird” now?
-Watanabe: Watching it now… Watching it now… *laughs*. I find the projects back from the period I had power pretty good. Some small details look rough, but really the things I did back then were impressive.
-Ashida: It’s not knowing fear. Now that you know what to be afraid of, going about it the same way isn’t possible.
-Watanabe: Right. I can refine the small details now, but achieving the same furiousness wouldn’t be possible. To this day seeing the dragon fight from “Blue Bird” (This scene) gives me goosebumps *laughs*. Why was I able to do something like that, I ask myself.
-Moderator: Oh no, this is turning into an old geezers’ conversation *laughs*.
-Watanabe: So, being completely helpless with character acting scenes, action sequences were my chance to go wild and forget about the storyboards. That’s why I did what I did. And that’s why I had that much fun. Then it became bitter, bit by bit, drawing key frames I mean, until one point in 198X where I just couldn't draw anymore.
-Moderator: Not being able to draw… what kind of situation was that exactly?
-Watanabe: Not going to Toei anymore, spending all day on Pachinko machines, that kind of stuff.
-Ashida: Truancy, basically.
-Watanabe: Along the way I started gradually wanting to draw again, drawing became interesting again. Then I said to myself, why not do some animation director assisting jobs, and since I have been causing all sorts of problems and troubles for the animation directors, I was so happy to be in a position where I can repay them. Everyday started being fun again.
-Moderator: What is an animation director assistant actually?
-Watanabe: Key frames, prior to the animation director’s corrections, are terrible. Although my frames don’t get approved, looking at the frames that do get approved I see only the middle of the frame being drawn while everything else is left to the animation director’s assistance to fill in. Also stuff like character faces being completely off, all these things have to be at least “prepared for correcting” in this process. It’s more of a 2nd key animation role than an animation director assistant. It was nonetheless fun, and correcting characters like that made me feel like I made some progress.
-Moderator: What about “Momo” (Minky Momo)?
-Watanabe: “Momo” was fun. Although in 198X I was kinda mentally depressed, none of the key animation I drew for “Momo” was turned down or returned for retakes. So I just kept pushing on.
-Ashida: This is the effect of the ultimate “Opening Strategy”. Let someone do the opening and have the fame at first, it was the same with the animation direction role.
-Watanabe: That was again a fluke of luck. My first job as an animation director was an episode with Kaijus fighting. With such things you just have to make them move, make them flashy and catchy.
-Moderator: Your speciality, huh.
-Watanabe: It wasn’t something I excelled at as much as it was something I had fun doing. Also, when speaking with Yuyama (Kunihiko)-san, I see he has something he wants to create with which I can totally empathize. Doing the normal life scenes without any interest, for example. So it got to the level of being a hobby where I give all my effort, rather than a job I have to do.
-Moderator: That’s how much you as an animator can get into in the project, right?
-Watanabe: Of course, being at Ashi Pro means that things like drawings numbers don’t matter. Such situations exist, but at stricter places cuts are made at the storyboards or screenplay stages. Deciding to tune down here a bit or focus here a bit from the start means that all this is planned through, something we can understand and makes us feel like the whole thing is indeed worth doing.
-Moderator: “Momo” was your first project as an animation director, how was it?
-Watanabe: Doing animation direction is annoying. Fixing the key animation of other people requires all my effort, animation direction isn’t a job you can slack off at even slightly. That’s why it made me want to draw key animation even more. That being said, doing animation direction limits me, but whether I’d be able to draw key animation if I didn’t do animation direction… Also, character acting stuff was handled by Yuyama-san, and I handled things like character faces. Those being Live’s key animation, I’d say MatsuX (he means Matsushita Hiromi) drawings were completely off, while (Kazuko) Tadano-san’s drawings were even more on model than mine *laughs*. Man, no more talking about “Momo” please.
-Moderator: *laughs* Well, that was the end of today’s interview. Thank you very much.

For basically my entire life, my only knowledge of Shotaro Ishinomori was this intro sequence from Astro Boy vol 15 where Tezuka said he looked like a potato (I actually own a volume of Cyborg 009 but I remember absolutely nothing about it, haha)...but now that I’ve seen some of his TV work via Toei Tokusatsu World on YouTube and Chikkun Takkun fansubs, I’m FURIOUS that his work isn’t more widely available in English, his character designs are so fun!!

A Merry Can,

A poetic intro for the trilogy where a new character from the USA joins the OMnialliance. He is one who is always happy and a problem solver hence the title 'A Merry Can' cos with him and his jovial attitude towards life allows him to deal with all with a smile on his face. His special gift is solving situations like they are simple equations hence he is in charge of the space embassy based at Mount Shastaa.

Goranger 22
Continuing on the first real 2-part episode so far, I’m excited! This one has an intro segment summarizing the previous episode.
The initial attempt to take back the airship obviously fails. Yellow tries to just board it with his jetpack but it’s heavily armed and they scare him off with guns, cannons, and bombs. More wonderful miniatures shots in the process of this.
New music as 4/5 of the rangers try to lead the airship away to give Peggy, the professor, and his kid some time to escape. They’re pushing the drama of this pretty well.
Yellow and green happen upon a kids’ baseball game and Yellow wants to join them. Sure, reasonable digression when an evil airship is going to blow up Japan. They also get the obligatory riddle stuff in here and more footage of yellow acting like a ham and the obvious goofball kid appeal character. This is filler.
Gear Mask throws a comically large fishing net out of the airship to kidnap the baseball kids lol. Variblune time, to chase them, new theme music included. Love the theme for this thing.
Oh Jesus they actually fucked up the Variblune, blue is hit, through the windshield! They manage to escape by trailing smoke but that was a close one. Blue needs to get his head bandaged.
“They’re going to sink Japan by detonating a super-bomb inside Mt. Fuji” Loving the creativity here, guys. At least there’s stakes.
Okay, Yellow is not purely a goofball idiot, they’re showing him inventing some sort of device that will stop the bomb from detonating and blowing up, uh, all of Japan.
Yellow got captured after sneaking around alone with some incredibly low quality camouflage. On purpose again? He’s firmly in their clutches and they’re launching THE ATLANTIS PLAN right away now. Oh and they’re gonna throw him into Mt. Fuji. Hope he planned for this.
It still hasn’t been well explained how Iron Mask Temujin managed to take over the airship and paint the Black Cross Army logo on the side at the exact time the archeology team found out where it was.
Bit of a scramble here: Yellow jumps out of the airship with Gear Mask and uses the device he made to, uh, somehow prevent fall damage? He also steals the bomb that Gear Mask had been hiding inside of himself, assuming he’s another cyborg/android guy on that basis. Shortly after, Gear Mask throws a gear that cuts the tether they were using to dangle the cage full of baseball kids. The remaining 4 rangers were prepared and flew up with their jet-belts to rescue the kids.
Now we’ve got the whole team versus Gear Mask with like 4 minutes left in the episode, I think we all know how this is gonna go.
We keep getting these fun shots of a motorized prop of Gear Mask’s head where the eyes and various other gears spin, I love it.
Thinking a bit about how well this show captures the feel of Shotaro Ishinomori’s works in live action. The Cyborg 009 vibes are really strong especially.
Looks like Yellow’s magic remote control also stops Gear Mask’s gears from functioning. Time to wrap this up with a ranger storm. Bit of a non-standard order this week, I think?
Oh shit folks we are headed into a three parter, they still have the airship and this thing hasn’t been resolved yet!

They have been releasing short actor intros/teasers on the Cyborg 009 The Stage youtube channel. As of writing everyone but Dr. Gilmore has been uploaded. What is surprising to me is the wide gap in view count between characters. Going by this alone it looks like Joe, Francoise, Geronimo Jr., and Great Britain are wildly popular!
Also they've finally updated the live stream video from a few weeks ago to include captions. So if anyone has been waiting for that, the wait is over!

King doesn’t talk, but he’s voiced by an actor named Rich Brown who lists work in God Wars: Future Past and GameTrailers on his Twitter (he’s also black so congrats OPM on having some actual diversity in your cast because I know Lord Boros is played by a black actor too)
Child Emperor is voiced by Sarah Cravens who was Power Girl in Injustice 2 and is Sachiko in Erased

Melzargard is one of the best monster designs in this series
I look forward to King getting expanded on in season two, I just really loved reading that
he doesn’t say anything, but Lord Boros is voiced by Chris Jai Alex who was Esidisi in Jojo
Lord Boros is such a good final boss, can’t wait to see that fight again
