Evacuation of my Neurological Patient Brother 🥹🙏

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I’m reaching out to you today, on behalf of my husband, with an urgent request for assistance. My family is currently facing an unimaginable situation as I desperately seek to evacuate them from the ongoing crisis in Gaza including my brother-in-law, who is a neurological patient, and my mother-in-law who is 70 years old, and she is not only grapples with the challenges of aging but also shoulders the burden of chronic illnesses, including high blood pressure and diabetes. My brother-in-law's condition requires specialized medical care, as he suffers from a benign tumor in the cerebellum. He underwent two major surgeries to remove the tumor, and an internal valve was installed to drain the cerebrospinal fluid.

This operation led to a permanent disability in movement and stiffness in the muscles of the legs, especially the left side. He needs constant follow-up and permanent rehabilitation treatment, as he was receiving two physical therapy sessions weekly to relieve muscle stiffness, but since the beginning of the aggression on the Gaza Strip (more than 4 months ago), he has not received this service, and in the same context, he needs daily medication which is simply not available now in Gaza, as the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict, with limited resources and a shortage of medical supplies. It is crucial that we act quickly to evacuate him to a safer location where he can receive the necessary medical attention and support, in addition to the evacuation of 6 other members of my family.

As many of you may be aware, Gaza has been experiencing a devastating humanitarian crisis for years. The recent Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has worsened the situation, leaving innocent civilians trapped and in desperate need of help. Knowing that we live in Gaza City, but the Israeli occupation army forced us to evacuate our homes and move to the center or south of the Gaza Strip. We left our home on 13th Oct. 2023 and moved to the center of the Gaza Strip, which was supposed to be a safe area, but then the Israeli soldiers began military operations in the central region. Therefore, we were forced to move to Rafah, living in a house including 20 members. Currently the Israeli Occupation Forces are threatening to invade Rafah, where 1.4 million people are taking refuge in an area of 55 km2. If Rafah is invaded, more massacres will be committed in addition to the massacres that were and are currently being committed in all areas of the Gaza Strip. Note that our house was directly hit by a missile, and currently the Israeli army does not allow us to return to Gaza city and to our homes, in addition to the fact that Gaza currently does not have the minimum necessities of life, such as electricity or clean water, in addition to the scarcity of resources. The given dimensions for the four-door hardtop Impala are 213.2 inches long (17.6 feet, 5.4 meters), 79.9 inches wide (6.6 feet, 2 meters), and around 55 inches tall (4.5 feet, 1.4 meters). Baby is a “hardtop” Impala rather than the sedan. This means it does not have a support post between the front and rear windows. Up through episode 3.09, the Impala has chrome aftermarket Unity spotlights mounted on both sides. Mounting instructions and a up-close view of these on a fan replica can be seen here. Note that Baby's spotlights have black handles with a thin red stripe. Turn the handle to turn the spotlight's base (up/down), and twist the handle to turn and aim the light (left/right). There is a small switch under the half-sphere part of the handle that locks the light's position.

Baby's wipers have chrome arms and have two speeds, low and high. The doors feature mounted door handles with opening buttons just below them. You push in these buttons to open the door instead of pulling on the handle itself. If locking the door by pressing the door lock button on the window sill, these buttons need to be held down while closing the doors so as not to hit the physical locking mechanism.

Unique to the 1967 are these cage-style corner lamps. They are completely absent on the '66 and different on the '68. The headlights are controlled by a knob on the dash and a high beam button down in the floorboard (pushed with your foot). These come on when the parking lights are turned on. To the best of my knowledge, Baby has 15x7 (15" diameter, 7" width) chrome steel wheels in the front and 15x8 in the back. This particular style is currently discontinued but was sold through a variety of brands under different names. The brand Cragar refers to this style as the "Super Spoke."

Outside of the in-universe book series’ fandom, four door Impalas are not sought-after or particularly “cool” classic cars. The Impala was marketed as a mid-luxury “family” car rather than something sporty or muscle-y. Other classic car buffs that Dean comes across might appreciate the way Dean has maintained the Impala for a daily driver, but not compared to a show car. They may also find the Impala underrated, but it is not a typical "dream car" the way a classic Camaro or Chevelle might be.

Without Dean, Baby would have likely ended up used for parts for other more desirable cars. This generation of Impalas is also virtually identical to other Chevrolets like Caprices and Bel Airs. Since Baby is debadged except for the “Chevrolet” on the grill, anyone who recognizes it as an Impala would be a massive nerd.

The people who voted for Kamala "Momala" Harris? I'm fucking proud of you.

As of writing this, Trump has won with 50.9% of the vote, Harris lost at 47.6%, and the remaining 1.4% voted third party. Trump has 9 fewer electoral votes than he did last time (295 in 2024, 304 in 2016), and Harris has 1 less than Clinton did (226 vs 227). (Nevada and Arizona have yet to call their electoral votes, they might go to Trump, they might not)

I know everyone is tired. Is upset. Is worried and scared and terrified of what it means that Trump has won.

But it wasn't a landslide. He won, yes, but not 70-30, not 60-40, not even 55-45. He won by less than 4 fucking percent.

He doesn't have as much support as he wants you to think.

So I'm not going to fall into despair yet, because there's enough people out there who don't want Trump to be in office that, while scary, my faith in people isn't all that shaken.

I'm proud of everyone who went out and voted for Harris because for fuck's sake I need a light in this darkness and that's what I fucking got. I don't know where the end of this tunnel is, but at least I have a flashlight, and there's other people with me, and we're gonna fucking get through this.

Monday Musings: Mount Everest

The tallest mountain in the world has captured human imagination for centuries. How did something so massive come to be? How can anything possibly live up there? Why are no other mountains as tall as this one? The reasons are found beneath the surface in the geologic structure of the earth.

Mt. Everest is found in the Himalayas right smack in between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate collision zone. India first collided with Eurasia 55 million years ago; long after the extinction of the dinosaurs. India, was a small, very old, strong block f continental lithosphere that had split off of the supercontinent Gondwana about 200 million years ago.

Contrast this with the southern part of Eurasia which was an amalgamation of younger, softer, warmer chunks of lithosphere that had been accreted on by other collisions. So when India joined the fun, it smushed those younger pieces right up like a knife to frosting.

But is that the reason it's the tallest? After all, were't the Alps built in a similar way when Africa collided with Europe? So why aren't they as tall?

It has a little to do with the rate of uplift vs the rate of erosion.

If the rate of erosion is greater than that of uplift, the mountains won't get very tall. If they are the same, you don't get a whole lot of change at all.

Now hang on, the Alps are rising at a rate of 2.5 mm a year with an erosion rate of upo to 1.4 mm a year and the Himalaya are only rising at a rate of 0.5 mm a year and an erosion rate of 2 mm a year. Shouldn't the Alps be taller?

Let's talk a little bit about isostatic rebound. Usually, this is a reference to the removal of weight on the crust as glaciers melt but it can also be used in the case of the removal of rock. Mount Everest is actually growing because of two ancient rivers that combined to become one large river, the Arun.

Large rivers can remove a lot of sediment in a short amount of time. The Arun River runs through some of the steepest terrain in the Himalayas which means it moves a lot of sediment. Mt. Everest is heavy and because of that it sinks into the mantle. The Arun River removes a few loads of sediment over the last 89,000 years or so and moves that weight elsewhere allowing Mount Everest to start bobbing back up.
