who was Augusta Chiwy?
Tumblr media
Episode 6 of Band of Brothers is a masterpiece, but I think writer Bruce C. McKenna made a huge error in only including Augusta Chiwy as a background character with no name in the episode, while Renée is a focus. I did some research on this amazing hero, who honestly deserves a miniseries of her own.
Renée Lemaire and Augusta Marie Chiwy (pronounced shee-wee) were nurses that lived in Belgium before the Battle of the Bulge. They volunteered to help Dr. John ‘Jack’ Prior (who was assigned to the 20th Armored Infantry Battalion) when the battle started. Dr. Prior evacuated the wounded soldiers he was taking care of from Noville to Bastogne as Noville was taken by German troops. Lemaire and Chiwy both volunteered to help Dr. Prior take care of the massive amounts of wounded men who were brought from the front lines into Bastogne.
Augusta was born in Belgian-colonized Africa (in the part that is now Burundi) to a Belgian father and African mother. Her family moved to Belgium when she was a child, and she trained as a nurse there. She was visiting Bastogne to see her father when the Battle of the Bulge began. She chose to use her skills as a nurse to help the soldiers who were trying to defend Bastogne from German forces.
Augusta Chiwy was heroic in her work during the Battle of the Bulge. War historian Peter Chaddick-Adams wrote that “Chiwy accompanied ‘Doc’ Prior to collect casualties from Mardasson Hill, north-east of Bastogne, wearing a GI uniform because her own clothes had become saturated with blood.” Chaddick-Adams wrote that Dr. Prior thought that bullets missed Augusta as she was out on the line because she was “so small.” Augusta was only 23 years old when she cared for hundreds of soldiers during the battle.
Renée Lemaire was killed by the Luftwaffe on December 23 when German aircraft bombed the Bastogne aid station, along with thirty wounded soldiers who were also inside. Augusta Chiwy was blown through a wall but miraculously survived the bombing. Her contributions to saving lives, and providing comfort to many soldiers in their last moments were largely unrecognized until 2011, when Augusta Chiwy was granted Knighthood by the king of Belgium for her service in the battle. The American ambassador to Belgium also presented Chiwy with the Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service. At this ceremony, Chiwy said: “What I did was very normal. I would have done it for anyone. We are all children of God.”
She passed away at 94 years old on August 23, 2015.

I may be too old to be part of the campus protests going on now, but I have the utmost respect for these students and supporters.
The kids in their first years of college? They were born in 2004-6. They were kindergarten age when Sandy Hook happened. They were in junior high when covid hit. They are struggling to choose a path to education that doesn't put their own lives or entire vulnerable populations at risk.
I was born in 1990. The first instance of school violence I knew of was Columbine, and I was 9. The first instance of terrorism or threat to my "normal" was 9/11, and I was 11. My first indication that the US might not be the altruistic big brother of the world was the invasion of Iraq in 2003, I was 13. The first time I realized that family financial situations can change unpredictably, was 2005 (parental medical issues, followed by 08 crash), and I was 15. My first experience being the victim of police brutality was in 2007, I was 17. The first currently-happening protests I knew of were Occupy Wall Street in 2011, I was 21. The first ongoing attempts at revolution I was aware of were Arab Spring in 2012, I was 22. I was in my 30s when I learned colleges support genocide and the military industrial complex. For the first three decades of my life, I was able to convince myself the system was working and progress was happening, at a snail's pace, but nonetheless.
These kids have NEVER existed in a world that felt safe, have never had a future that seemed secure, have never even lived the illusion of the American Dream. The kids who are trying to choose a college that doesn't support genocide were the first kindergartners to do active shooter drills, how do they choose which university to allow to point guns at them? These were the first kids to have to live through, and study the historical impact of Covid, and they saw that the economy is valued above all else. These kids lost their virginity or came out of the closet in a world that was getting safer only to have healthcare taken from them. The world has failed this generation so intensely, and I can only hope y'all hold society accountable.
I have a child now, a true Gen Alpha Honey badger, and I am so hopeful that gen z can lead the charge to making sure my child doesn't have to face these same choices. Go forth, we got your backs, I'm too old and disabled to be front lines anymore, but I'll show up with snacks and do the jail release runs. I'll babysit and cook for when y'all get back from your actions.

“Even today we don’t pay serious attention to the issue of poverty, because the powerful remain relatively untouched by it. Most people distance themselves from the issue by saying that if the poor worked harder, they wouldn’t be poor.”
— Muhammad Yunus
Never was the expression “same old, same old" more appropriate than when it comes to government statements and attitude towards welfare payments.
Below is a series of statements by various Conservative Chancellors since 2010.
“Work or lose your benefits: Iain Duncan Smith heralds biggest shake-up of welfare state since the war." (Mail Online 28/05/10)
“Hammond calls for fresh welfare cuts to protect military spending." (The Herald: 03/03/13)
“The benefit system is broken. I  think people in this country understand that the welfare system needs to change."  (George Osborne 02/04/2013
“DWP’s own statics show that nearly 90 people died every month between December 2011 and February 2014 after their ESA benefit stopped because a work capability assessment found them able to work." (Independent: 23/11/16)
“Sajid Javid insists Universal Credit cut will go ahead amid warnings of ‘catastrophic’ consequences" (Canary:12/09/21)
“Jeremy Hunt has been accused of "demonising" disabled people after announcing sweeping welfare changes that will strip them of benefits if they don't look for a job.”  (Sky News: 22/11/23)
“Tories pledge to cut rising welfare bills." (Rishi Sunak LBC News: 08/06/24)
Every Tory Chancellor has cut welfare payments. It is what we expect from uncaring Conservative governments whose priorities are always  cutting government spending.
No Tory government seems to be concerned about the causes of a rising welfare bill – junk food leading to ill health, decades of low wages, a rigged housing market leading to unaffordable rents and a lack of social housing, starving the NHS of sufficient funding, a total lack of planning regarding social care of the elderly. I could go on.
The one connecting theme is those on welfare are seen as unworthy of even the little help they are given. Time and time again, it is the poorest and least healthy in our society who are told they must make sacrifices to save the country money because it is their fault they are poor or sick.
Strangely it is never the rich and wealthy who are asked to contribute more. They can go on enjoying paying a lower tax rate for their unearned income than the ordinary men and women who have to work for a living; and while the British government provides £23billion to corporations and big business over the next three years, the poorest in our society  must take a cut in their benefits. In short, the poor and the sick are subsidizing big business.
This is what we expect from the Tories and comes as no surprise. What is disheartening is that this is now the policy of the Starmer Labour government.
“Keir Starmer defends planned welfare cuts …Prime minister wants to reform disability benefit payments to help fund greater spending on defence." (Financial Time: 10/03/25)
Really?  The poor and the sick are to pay for the defence of the rich and wealthy? It's a novel idea but how about the rich and the wealthy paying some of the necessary increase in defence spending? Perhaps an end to their tax breaks? Perhaps an end to their tax avoidance schemes? Perhaps a tax on their wealth? Maybe British business could be charged a defence levy?
But no, that just isn’t going to happen. Starmer is a Blairite and Blaire is a supporter of the old neo-liberal economic order. The disillusionment with neo-liberal free market economics and its failure to boost the living standards of ordinary Americans has led to the rise of the populist hard-right Donald Trump. The same thing is going to happen here and Starmer and the Conservative party will only have themselves to blame.

Okay here's my SCP post.
I never really got into SCP because to me it looked like if they added Scary Guys to 2ch "believe it or not" lore threads backrooms style. I can't seem to find anything on the English side of the internet about it so I'm assuming y'all have never heard of it but to give an example lemme translate a few of those:
1: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 09:55:39 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
A letter from an unknown sender was sent to someone. This instruction was written in the letter: "Add a Lore to this letter and send it to one other person." But he disobeyed the instruction, and spread the Lores widely to an unspecified number of people. After he disappeared, it is said that new Lores were added and were sent to yet another person.
What is 'Lore', exactly?
included in the words 'folklore' or 'internet lore,' Many people may have seen the word 'Lore.' In other words, 'Lore' is a rumor that you've heard, a story that you don't know the basis of that feels like it really happened, A compelling story that sounds like a lie and like the truth, so to speak, an urban legend, etc, It's a story out of a chain letter.
4: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 09:59:26 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
A man awoke one morning and cried, "I have no nose!" The next day, "I have no ears!" and the next day, "I have no eyes!" But on the fourth day he cried nothing, because had lost his mouth.
...
8: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 10:03:03 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
"Do you need flowers(ハナ)?" When approached from behind, N turned around. A girl with a bouquet of roses and scissors was standing. It's rare to see a flower seller these days. It seemed that she was not Japanese.
"I'm sorry, but I don't need it."
"Do you not need flowers(ハナ)?"
Looking around the girl's mysterious stance, N hurriedly exclaimed, "No, I need it! I need it!"
There it was littered with cut "nose(ハナ)" that belonged to those who must have said "I don't need it."
9: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 10:13:38 ID:PMjLDGu90
"She was asking me, 'Do you need a nose?' There were many human noses in the place where she stood! They all got their noses cut off because they replied, 'I don't need them!' So I answered, 'I need it!' That's all!" Since that day, Mr. N had two noses on his face.
Believe it or not—
...
14: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 11:33:00 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
In 1970, the strange series of incidents began at a hotel in a remote countryside in Wales. First, the left leg, then the right arm, and pieces of the mutilated body were found throughout Britain. The examination found that all the bodies were of the same person. Police decided to ignore the incidents when three left arms and two heads of the same person were found.
17: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 12:05:34 ID:9d9X1EexO
Ooh, finally a new thread! I really loved that thread, so I'm happy. >>1 Thank you But the Lore about selling flower was q
18: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 12:08:20 ID:9d9X1EexO
Sry, typo But the Lore about selling flower was quite long. That's what I wanted to type.
21: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 13:35:05 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
In 1968, an express train connecting Florida and Georgia suddenly stopped at a tunnel. When the driver of the subsequent train, who had received the report, went to see what was going on, he found that everyone on the train had already died. And strangely enough, according to the investigation committee, all of their deaths were due to old age.
23: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 13:36:45 ID:PMjLDGu90
>>18 I wrote the nose Lore as a two-parter.
25: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 21:13:34 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
Stock trader, S, who, after retiring due to mental fatigue, became nauseated just by passing through the train station near to the office building. His psychiatrist friend told him: "When you're passing by the station, repeat to yourself, that station doesn't exist." After that, S, with a pale expression, began to say, "I repeated to myself, there is no such station, and the station actually disappeared." The psychiatrist, upon asking the station, winced as well, because the station of that name actually did not exist on that line.
26: Anonymous: 2011/01/30(Sun) 21:14:27 ID:PMjLDGu90
Believe it or not—
A novelist found a weird note on the bookshelf in his study. On it, in his handwriting— 'Currently, a year is 452 days. A week 12 days. The distance between the moon and the earth, 130 thousand km…' —were completely inaccurate measurements, and at the end, hurriedly scribbled: 'The world keeps getting renewed.' He did not have a memory of writing such a thing. Was he, 'renewed,' just like that.
---
I think it would be a whole lot different if these were SCPs. Scary creatures and items catalogued as real instead of mixed in with lies, sharing a single world. IIRC There's a bit about the OP disappearing after going nuts House of Leaves style I wish these were translated into English cause they kinda defined my taste in horror. Compared to these SCP feels way shallower to me. Scary guys. yk.

Hadestown (in 4 Acts)
youtube
One of the biggest dilemmas being a Hadestown fan is deciding which soundtrack to have your friends listen to first. Each soundtrack has its advantages, and with such drastic song & character & story differences between productions, the soundtrack you choose to show a friend may lastingly shape what they think of the show.
Fan-compiled Spotify & YouTube playlists have been an answer to this problem, though a limited solution, as the show's story beats may not make sense when simply intercutting between the best versions of songs from different productions. Not to mention the best versions of some songs are not found on Spotify or any officially released soundtrack.
So, three years ago I made a fan edit of the soundtrack backdropped with minimalist visuals and featuring the lyrically best/most dramatically useful versions of each track (in my opinion) to help a new viewer understand the show's plot, aesthetic, structure, and dramatic heart; cutting out certain small story beats to gel individual songs within the context of all other tracks used. The end product is a sum of parts that creates a new shape and whole to my favvvvv musical :3
This is Hadestown (in 4 Acts), a semi-visual fan edit of the Hadestown soundtrack made with the intention of being the most accessible version of the show for someone who hasn't seen or listened to Hadestown before. This was made for you to send to your uninitiated friends, to be their first experience of the show.
Give it a watch and tell me what y'all think! ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶
(( i intended to publish this three years ago when i originally made the edit, but alassss, when i uploaded it to youtube the vid got an immediate copyright strike :\ figures. but !! i just discovered that at some point in the last three years the copyright strike was removed? idk why and i'm not gonna question it 😅. i'm pumped though to finally be sharing the edit [albeit three years late] !!!
i've thought in the years since about how i might make different editing choices [especially since the release of the west end soundtrack]. but unfortunately I lost the original premiere pro files on an old hard drive 😭💀😭 so this is sadly the final version. ))

Alright I'm tired of it being locked up in a notepad, here's the chronological release dates of all things Destiny that I know of. I'll add to it if someone knows more.
Dates are YYYY/MM/DD. Blue is Destiny 1, pink is Destiny 2, pretty much just prefix everything with the normal full title of either game. I'm trying to keep it easy to read. Kasukabe's artbook is on here because it has extra comics. The anthologies are non-canon but officially licensed and all by multiple artists (far too many to list) as far as I know. I am not dedicated enough to find the localization dates of everything, just know that various things have received localizations in languages other than English, sometimes several years after their initial publication.

The Scots Parliament confirmed the Alliance and Federation with France on May 18th 1491.
This was a series of agreements had lasted since 1295 ,this year marks the 729th anniversary.
By the year 1420 the 'Army of Scotland' was a distinct element in the French royal service around this time Pope Martin V described the Scots as the "antidote to the English." In 1491 the Auld Alliance was renewed and James IV pursued desultory and largely unproductive warfare along the border culminating in the tragic events at Braxton moor in 1513, a foolish endevour that was carried out at the request of Louis XII, Flodden was one of the most unnecessary battles in Scottish history. No Scottish interest was threatened and, in the end, none was served.
The Alliance became more fragile after this and although there were revivals during the 16th century it's days were numbered, the final revival happened in 1558 with the marriage of, yes that lady again, Mary, Queen of Scots to the future Francis II of France.
Although the alliance was never formally revoked, it is considered by some to have ended with the signing of the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1560. with the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1560. This is the legal agreement between the English, French and Scots representatives. It is agreed between French and English representatives that all military forces will withdraw from Scotland.
In 1967 a historian wrote that the Auld Alliance didn't end until 1906 indeed right up to 1907 if you were Scottish you would still be granted citizenship of France,.
Another historian only 13 years ago claimed the Alliance was still "live" more about that here https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/news/archive/list/display/?id=7313&year=2011&month=08
