Inca past and symbolism in 18th century Saint-Domingue (part I)
One of the most peculiar developments near the end of the Haitian Revolution was the adoption of the name Inca and children of the Sun by Jean-Jacques Dessalines. According to historian Thomas Madiou, Dessalines began using the name by the autumn of 1802, referring to those who submitted to him in opposition to the forces of Leclerc (Madiou 451). However, Dessalines dropped the Inca name after July 1803, when he began to refer to his forces as Armée Indigène, asserting indigeneity in opposition to the French (Geggus 52). Although a number of observers and historians have commented on this “Inca Episode” in the history of the Indigenous Army, contextualizing it within the broader context of nationalist struggles in the Americas demonstrates the power of Inca symbolism across much of the Americas, extending even into the Caribbean. Rebecca Earle’s The Return of the Native: Indians and Myth-Making in Spanish America, 1810–1930 provides a context for understanding the appeal of the Inca to the Haitian independence movement. Thus, this brief post will endeavor to elucidate the origins of Inca symbolism and its appeal to the people of Saint Domingue in the 18th century, and connect it to the independence movement that led to independence in 1804. By the conclusion, hopefully Antillean “Incas” will seem less aberrant or surprising.

belated pictures from yesterdays fitting & oh my!!!!! isnt she looking good !!!
the petticoat is here, finally, and its feeling real blue right now, but im hoping when i get some ruffles & trim on there itll break up how full on it is- along with the darker teal stomacher.
the sleeves are half in here- i just had them on to test the rotation & i think??? im happy with it??? when the top is pulled up it sits pretty smooth. i need to cut in the armsyce a bit more- theres too much material around the front and i think lowering the underarm will help with the side wrinkling.
im still messing with the hem length-i might want to drop the front edge of the robe down a fraction, and the train is all up in the air, but i think im getting somewhere :)
i think thats all my notes! man i gotta settle on a trim pattern soon 🙃
#im feeling very LOOK AT HER !!!! LOOK AT HER !!!!!!!! right now#ok so i see many many issues with this in fact. but the impact is there#and im really hoping the trim brings it all together#i am simply trying to be proud of myself for doing this with no 18th c experience & probably inappropriate fabric#lady stede build#sewing#18th century fashion#cosplay#historical costuming#stede bonnet#she also needs a real good press to make those back pleats ✨️crisp✨️

lustfully browsing antique keys on eBay & i have to scroll past so much modern cast-iron decorative bullshit & real-but-overpriced (extremely common) rusty 19th century cabinet keys to get to THESE BEAUTIES
a huge Japanese tansu key!!! no date, but clearly hand-forged. very tempting at $30. everything else is $$$
absolutely massive 18th c. "shipwreck" key (doubt.png but maybe?) & they want $300 for it. it's beautiful but no thank you
fuck OFF i want this SO BAD....18th century French safe key. it's $575 :')
NOOOOOOOOO GIVE IT HERE this is a dream key...16th-18th c. Venetian. museum-ass key. $320? i'm kind of surprised i mean i can't afford it but this one's better than the $500 keys
as @mildmayfoxe keeps saying, you can get anything on eBay, why buy your loved ones new things when you can buy them REALLY OLD things that are much much cooler
#antique keys#i don't think i'm actually gonna buy the tansu key but it's large & beautiful#i think my current oldest key is a big 18th c. possibly church door key#i want more scrunkly old unique wrought iron keys!!!

thinking about classic lit. What if you were all alone in the world, having lost your family to colonialism, and this white man decides to take you in and be almost like a father to you- But Not Really! because the distinction must be maintained that you are not One Of Them. you learn things. you learn that you are wild and that his people and family dont trust you because of who/what you are. and they are cruel to you because of it, because of something you cannot control! its in your nature! In which case, why ought'nt you be cruel to them in return? to yearn to take everything from them, as everything had been held from you, just in sight but never yours? The resentment festers in you. You use others - closer to them - to take your revenge. You think, this man could've been good to me once, but he hurt me, and so when i have the chance to return the favor, i will hurt him! and his daughter is almost collateral damage of this chain of hurt, this cycle of disdain and lashing out against others, all started by , lets be honest, racism. And what if (also possibly because of racism) you only had one name because not only have you lost your real family, you will never belong anywhere.
but at least Caliban isn't played predominantly by white actors in adaptations which perhaps badly misunderstand the original text, like Heathcliff played by jacob elordi in the upcoming-[muffled yelling as i am dragged off stage]
#puddle talks#wuthering heights#heathcliff#emily bronte#the tempest#caliban#shakespeare#not excusing either of them but#taps the sign. heathcliff's story and the way people treat him is informed by him being a person of color in the late 18th/early 19th c#while caliban might not be so on purpose as that his portrayal as the island native with magic powers is not like. contextless#anyway this is also about the other parallels not just the racism... the cycle of violence...#what you do when people expect the worst of you no matter what <- i could throw eunyung baek in here but i wont .#anyway chewing on wood#i think the version of the tempest i was in (i was one of ariels spirits) took out the bit about caliban and miranda actually. hm#i would be such a good english major except for im so bad at reading things for class lol

My good fellow do I have a STORY for you! A while back, I saw your leafkerchief, went “that’s brilliant,” and promptly became unable to find it. “Ah, oh well,” thought I, leaning into the sour grapes fallacy to the best of my ability, “I probably wouldn’t have a place to wear it anyway.” But lo! This summer, I was to attend the ren faire with my friends, just the place for such a fine garment. And I. Could not. Find. The. Video. No search terms were enough—leaf bandana, leaf headscarf, leaf head covering, none of them worked. But this morning, I stumbled upon a reblog of your patchwork dressing gown. Something stirred in the back of my mind. Something old. Something ancient. Something that was actually maybe a year, tops, but still very pressing. “Wait,” a voice murmured inside my head. “Wait, he looks familiar. He looks… strangely… familiar.” After a quick rampage of clicking links, I found it! The leafkerchief! I would also like to say that I feel I have matured in the last several months, and can now say that I would enthusiastically wear a giant leaf around campus. Point being, I am very giddy and now know what I am making next. So thank you! I hope that you are having a splendid day.
Yay! Make a big leaf for your head, yes!!
I'm glad you managed to find it, it's so frustrating when that happens! I've gone looking for sewing blog posts I vaguely remember, and sometimes they're nowhere to be found, and sometimes the whole blog has been deleted in the intervening 8 or 10 years. Alas.
I am having a pretty nice day, yes, and I hope you are too!
#ask#leafkerchief#still annoyed that one post about 18th c. metallic buttonholes that a couple other sources link to is now gone & I never got to read it
