A Spoiler-Free Guide to Dodging Marazhai's Romance Bugs

This info is based on the state of the game as of Hotfix 1.0.89. A lot of this will hopefully become irrelevant as Owlcat puts out more patches.

I've seen a lot of people struggling to successfully romance Marazhai in Owlcat's Rogue Trader CRPG, due to Owlcat continuing their time-honored tradition of launching their games with an obscene amount of bugs.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I was able to successfully finish a sub!Marazhai romance with the "good" romance ending, and I ended up having a pretty good grasp on how the whole thing works. So I thought I'd share what I've learned to save others the trouble. This info should be good for both sub!Marazhai and dom!Marazhai.

Toybox

If you don't have it already, Toybox is highly recommended. You can get it on Nexus Mods. It will help you make sure things are progressing as expected, and fix some things if they get messed up. However, it's not necessary at this point if you're careful, the only thing you need it for is to fix some flags to get some really minor extra dialog.

If you choose to use toybox, you can see the tree + flags for the dialog you're currently in by clicking the "Dialog & NPCs" tab. You can also make flags show up directly in the dialog boxes in game with the "Preview" settings in the main tab. "Dialog Results" will show changes to flags + etudes that will happen if you choose a given dialog option. "Dialog Conditions" will show the conditions required for a dialog options to show. I kept both checked for my whole playthrough for peace of mind.

Flags/Etudes

There are some toybox flags + etudes that are important to Marazhai's romance. (flags are just values like true/false/a number, etudes are... properties set based on flags I guess? idk exactly). You can browse etudes in a tree structure in the "etudes" tab. If you need to change the value of a flag, do that in the "Search 'n Pick" tab.

Etude - Romances >> Marazhai should be flagged as "Active". If it says "Completed", something has gone wrong.

Etude - Romances >> Marazhai >> Counters >> Domination and Romances >> Marazhai >> Counters >> Submission. These determine Marazhai's attitude. If "Domination" is "Active", you get dom!Marazhai, if "Submission" is "Active", you get sub!Marazhai. You have to stick to one or the other, or Marz will be unhappy with you.

Flag - Ascention. This flag needs to be, I believe, minimum 4 by the time you get his final romance scene in Act 5 to get the "good" romance ending. It's pretty easy to get Ascention points as long as you play along with Marazhai, respect his uh... culture, and stick to your dom/sub role.

Etudes - Companions >> Marazhai >> Marazhai_States >> Domination and Companions >> Marazhai >> Marazhai_States >> Submission. You can safely ignore these, they don't actually affect the romance as far as I can tell :)

Regarding Marazhai's Companion Quest

Doing the sub!Marazhai route will lock you out of a certain outcome for Marazhai's companion quest. I don't think this is a bug, because narratively, it makes a lot of sense that this happens. However, the outcome you get locked out of could be considered the "ideal" outcome (though I also think this is debatable, and I was happy with my outcome/ending for my sub! Marazhai). You can get a good romance ending regardless of the outcome of this quest.

The flag related to Marazhai's personal quest is called TempestCounter, and you need it at 5+ for the "ideal" outcome. All TempestCounter points are based on whether Marazhai's dom or sub etude is active, outside of the points you get from the errand mentioned below. dom!Marazhai adds points, sub!Marazhai removes points. Which is why sub!Marazhai locks you out of an outcome.

Act 3 - Post Recruitment Scene

There are two versions of Marzipan's post-recruitment scene. The "Normal" version currently has a bug with dom/sub points, but you can work around it.

Normal - this is what most people see. There is an opportunity to get a dom or sub point in this dialog, but it's bugged so they're flipped. If you want your RT to be dom, pick the sub-y dialog option, and if you want your RT to be sub, pick the dom-y option.

Dogmatic party members starting drama - There's some confusion about what exactly triggers this. My recommendation to get this version of the scene: make sure you recruit Ulfar before you recruit Marazhai, and if you have Argenta and/or Heinrix with you for the Act 3 location, make sure you put them back in your party ASAP (they will get temporarily removed from it), so that they're with you for the event where you recruit Marazhai. To be safe, bring one of Argenta and/or Heinrix with you for Act 3. This dialog also has an opportunity for a dom or sub point, and is not currently bugged. ALSO it unlocks an errand that will lead to a little bit of extra dialog, and potential TempestCounter points.

Act 3 - Marazhai's Possessions

You'll get an act 3 companion quest for Marazhai where he asks you to help find some stuff he has stashed away. Eventually, you find a specific item he's very excited about. Make sure you let him keep this item. There's also an opportunity to get a dom or sub point here, but the flags are flipped again. So like last time, if you want your RT to be dom, pick the sub-y dialog, and if you want to be sub, pick the dom-y dialog.

Congratulations, this is the last flipped dom/sub flag situation you need to worry about! (at least, I'm not aware of any others)

***Also MILD SPOILER WARNING due to flag name***

I guess this is really only a spoiler if you're familiar with 40k lore but... anyways... This scene should probably start etude MarTookAgonizer, and should also probably start either PlayerTriedAgonizer or PlayerTriedAgonizerOnMar (depending on what you did). Start the appriate etudes manually for some fun little bits of bonus dialog later :)

Act 4 - First Void Jump With Marz

In act 4, during you first void jump with Marazhai, he'll cause... problems. You'll ultimately have 3 ways to deal with this:

Let him do whatever tf he wants. Sets Companions >> Marazhai >> Marazhai_States >> Domination to active. Currently bugged, prevents completing the quest associated with this event and prevents romance progression.

Compromise? Sets Companions >> Marazhai >> Marazhai_States >> Sybarite to active. Confirmed to work for both dom!Marazhai and sub!Marazhai romance paths

Lock him up. Sets Companions >> Marazhai >> Marazhai_States >> submission to active. Immediately breaks the romance. Used to work with romance, but according to patch notes was causing Big Bugs so it just ends the romance now. It should get restored in a future patch, but for now, DO NOT PICK THIS.

Act 4 - Sleeping with Marz the First Time

There is a known bug where after you sleep with Marazhai for the first time after going for a "walk", you get dom!Marazhai flavoured dialog no matter what. The sub!Marazhai flavoured dialog for this doesn't even seem to be in the game. So... nothing you can do about it, but it won't break your romance. It will just seem a bit off if you've been doing the sub!Marazhai route.

Side Content - Equipping Super Cursed Item

This doesn't affect the actual romance in any way, but it's a bug you can experience if you have an active romance with Marazhai. There's a side planet where you can loot a SUPER cursed item, that warns you that you won't be able to take if off if you equip it. If you try to equip it anyway with romanced Marazhai in the party, you'll get a special interaction with him over it. Unfortunately, it's bugged, and as a result the item will be stuck on your character but with providing any benefits, so it effectively just removes one of your equipment slots, which is super annoying. Do recommend saving and then trying to equip the item just to see the scene though :)

Companion Quest Journal Bugs

You may notice Marazhai's optional Act 3 errand and his Act 4 companion quest not getting removed from the quest log. Don't stress it - if you've done what's required by them, you're good. The quest/errand is done, the journal entry is just stuck because it's bugged.

Aaaand that's pretty much it! There used to be a few other bugs affecting Marazhai's romance but they've since been patched. Now it's mostly a few issues early on, and then smooth sailing once you get past those.

General, non-bug-related tips for succesfful romance:

Don't be a coward, Marazhai respects wholeheartedly embracing Drukhari culture and will break things off if you don't

Stick to your established dom or sub role

Play along with Marazhai's shenanigans

Keep in mind that you really can't be a good person while completing this romance path

Question: Cenred does not hate magic like Uther does. He was fine with Morgouse. So it's quite possible that magic is legal?

So personally, I think Hunith was more afraid of Cenred taking Merlin and using him as a weapon?

(What we know of Cenred’s kingdom);

Cenred’s kingdom is described as a dangerous kingdom that lived by the sword, rather than by the rule of law.

They were NOT noble and chivalrous knights like those of Camelot, but mercenaries who were eager for a battle and yet loyal to their king.

One of the knights was quick to try and defend Cenred’s honor when Morgause called him a coward.

They were also eager to fight against the warriors of the Blood Guard accompanying Morgause and only backed down from the fight on their kings orders.

Uther himself admits that Cenred had never been openly hostile towards them without good reason and was therefore shocked when the mercenaries attacked without provocation.

(THIS ☝️ could also be a major reason why Uther was not willing to send aid to Ealdor, even in the form of a few knights. He was not willing to risk starting a war with a neighboring kingdom who had so far never attacked without provocation).

- We know Cenred had an army of twenty thousand or more men.

Gaius admits that number of soldiers means they are, ‘outnumbered two to one.' Which implies Camelot had somewhere in the ballpark of ten thousand knights.

If you take into account that Cenred’s army were mercenaries (not likely of noble blood) and Camelot only accepted knights of noble blood at the time, that explains why their enemy had so many more warriors.

That theory also fits with Will of Ealdor being a peasant and his father having died as a soldier in Cenred’s army.

Also, Cenred might have had a much larger army, but Morgause noted upon watching their initial attack, that compared to the Knights of Camelot, ‘Cenred’s army was a group of undisciplined rabble.’

My answer: Given what we know of Cenred, it seems likely that with his ‘live by the sword, rather then law’ philosophy and his agreement with Jarl, the slave trader… to look the other way.

It’s stands to reason that if Merlin’s power had been discovered while in Ealdor, he would have been kidnapped and forced to serve as one of Cenred’s mercenaries.

Cenred is clearly not against kidnapping (since he abducts Elyan and Gwen as well) and any powerful magical weapon that could be conceivably used against him would be up for grabs, even if that weapon is a person.

I doubt Cenred’s entire army is constructed out of unfortunate sorcerers who were forced into his ranks (as is the popular fan theory), but if someone like Merlin were discovered within the kingdom.

I could see that becoming his fate.

Book description:

Sir Leon took a deep breath. 'Twenty thousand men, maybe more.'

'Forgive me, sire,' ventured Gaius, 'but we are outnumbered two to one.'

5. Huge siege ladders crashed against the white stone of the walls, and men swarmed up them.

For a moment Morgause thought that the battle might be over even sooner than she had expected, but Uther's men were too well trained and valiantly fought off the attackers, sending them tumbling and screaming as they pushed the ladders back or sent down arrows in a deadly rain.

Morgause gave a hiss of disappointment.

Compared to the Knights of Camelot, the army that Cenred had put together was an undisciplined rabble.

6. Cenred refilled Morgause's goblet with wine and regarded her suspiciously. 'I'm certain that you have not come all this way to drink, Morgause.

She sipped at her wine. 'You know me well.'

'Extremely well.' Cenred nodded sagely. 'And yet somehow we're still close.'

Question: Merlin doesn't actually show any lesser nobility that does not live in capital cities.

It does however imply they exist.

My answer: Northumberland and Wessex are both noble houses that don’t live in the capital.

Thank you very much for the questions! Let's dive right in. For the Anon who also asked about 11 & 12, this one's also for you!

2. What is their Origin? Who were they before they became a Rogue Trader?

Iustitia Xanathaw von Valancius was a Commissar, raised in the Schola Progenium to be the perfect leader of her regiment. Harsh but just, she would punish any who showed cowardice, while fiercely guarding those who stood brave in the face of adversity.

4. What does their name mean? Is it significant?

Iustitia is latin for "Justice". A fitting name for one who would become the judge and executioner of the guard under her control. During her days in the Schola Progenium, she used it as a guiding light for who she was to become.

11. Who amongst their retinue are they closest to?

Okay so I can't decide who is closer, so top two! Also framing as, at this point in her story (which is chapter two, not long after Rykad Minoris.)

First up is Kibellah. Her, unusual practices, have actually been helping Iustitia grapple with her past torture, and given her a lense in which to reframe the pain she deals with daily into something positive. While Iustitia is not necessarily down with keeping the Bloodspun Web brand fresh, it is the one scar she bears that does not make a cold sweat break out on the back of her neck. There is some, small comfort in that. (Idk how to word this well I hope I got my point acroooooooss lol)

Secondly, Pasqal. Pasqal is a breath of fresh air from the rest of her emotion driven, and secretive, retinue. As a follow up point to question 23 asked and answered earlier, I think Pascal would be the first amongst companion characters to get to see the real her, as after learning he likes communal baths, she would have invited him to her sacred bath time.

12. Who amongst their retinue do they clash with the most?

Not sure if she counts, but Jacosta Sauerbeck. Iustitia can only see everything she hates about herself and her former fellow Commissars. She also sees the way the woman looks at her scars, and it instills utter dread in her.

Strictly companion characters, likely Marazhai, given The torture and all that. (Tho I have yet to play that faaaaaar teehee)

13. Are they romantically involved with anyone? Do they wish to be?

Not yet :3c

Talking completely as her creator for this question, I'm actually really struggling to pick a romance partner for her. I use toybox, so normally gender locked options are available to me.

So far top choices are Kibellah and Heinrix. (Though cassia is so CUTE Iustitia getting to be her perfect lil gentlewoman is so tempting,, I just don't think it fits Iustitia)

I think Heinrix would be a very interesting route to explore, due to his role as interrogator and her past trauma of torture. How is that divide overcome? It would a complex, and turbulent love story.

Kibellah I think could be a potentially really healing partner for Iustitia, without the complexity and turbulence a Heinrix romance would have.

Ultimately the answer is MAKE PASQAL ROMANCABLE OWLCAT, AND MY LIFE IS YOURS

Lessons From the Grand Sage VIII: Cultural Studies (Hydris)

Today we continue our studies of lands beyond our own. Last time, we examined one of the peoples of the far south – the Citalen Republic, young among the great powers yet no less mighty. Now our eyes turn to the north, to a land even more ancient than our own.

I speak of the realm of Hydris. The northern most of any society that might well be called ‘civilized’ – though some are loathe to apply such a term to the wild and anarchic Hydrisians. Despite this apparent lawlessness, there are two important points to remember:

First, Hydris was at one point ruled by Boudicca herself while she was still a mortal woman. To date, she remains the only monarch to have ever ruled all of Hydris. Even to this day, her cult holds considerable political sway, enough to keep the myriad of jarls in line.

Second, Hydris is ancient beyond reckoning. It predates the fallen empire, assuredly. Some accounts hold that it was born when first mankind stepped onto this world in the dark mists of our distant past. Some may scoff, but Hydris outlasts all others.

If no king sits upon a throne, then who reigns?

In truth, the realm of Hydris naturally owes much to the city of Hydris. All across the land, jarls – chieftains elected by acclaim in rituals overseen by the Sisters of Boudicca – manage the day to day affairs of its people and the use of its warriors. The city itself is ruled by four such jarls, to whom all others pledge fealty.

The jarls are kept in check by three powers. The Sisters of Boudicca, before whom all are equal and all are held accountable to the laws of Hydris. The Mystics, a secretive order of Spirit mages who keep lore and enforce the Sisters’ edicts. And the Sages of Kwaycha, advisers and leaders to Hydris.

For no conversation of Hydris can be complete without mention of the Pact. As old as the city itself, it binds the humans of Hydris and the elves of Kwaycha in everlasting alliance. Over long centuries, their cultures have become intertwined. Elven Mind mages speak to human chieftains and their words are heard with rapt attention.

Two centuries ago, a third joined the Pact – the Dwarves of Maldrun Hall, who joined after Hydris aided them in reclaiming their lost homelands under the mountains. Their skill in craft has only strengthened the Pactlands, most notably in the city’s famous defenses, the Painted Walls.

It is likely that all you will see of Hydris are its warriors and traders, who are often one and the same. Hydrisian longships are a ubiquitous sight at any port across the continent, ours included. In the chaos of the fall, their boisterous and laughing sailors were the only lifeline between distant lands.

There is much more to say of the Hydrisians, but I will leave that to your own studies.

Transient lore overview

Figured at this point I have enough separate OC verses, let alone actual OCs themselves that its worthwhile to make big overview pages that describe all of their settings, characters, themes, connections, etc.

Transient is a OCverse i've been working on for a few years now ft. Sulu, Function, Felis, Splish, and Alpha in a fantasy space setting. In my head the intended format is an episodic cartoon comedy series, akin to things like regular show, futurama, adventure time, etc with no overarching ""plot"" per se, just following characters as they interact and develop.

Sulu:

Sulu is the main character, he travels throughout sea-space solving problems and helping people however he can. He is very competent and gives things his all until a problem is solved.

He spends a large portion of his time alone, but he frequently links up from his friends Felis and Splish when the need arises. He has a warm, comforting, friendly personality but doesn't often stick around long enough to form deeper bonds. Hes akin to a benevolent trader joes staffer that gives you a soothing sense of ease as he guides you where to the munster cheese is stocked, but like two ships passing never again will your two paths meet.

Sulu as a character is very dedicated and compassionate, and is genuinely motivated in helping others. That being said, there is a deeper layer to his unwavering dedication. Its a two-pronged coping strategy and distraction from his own struggles. He often ignores any ill that happens to him as a result of obsessively working and puts off addressing his own problems to an extremely problematic degree. His struggles with depression and self neglect end up devolving into the primary conflict.

Function:

Function is the closest thing to an antagonist the series has. Function is an entity originally from the realm of pure math that got wedged in what he refers to as "the meat world" (ie the physical world). By nature his intent is to increase disorder without bound. He's still adjusting to being stuck in the physical world and doesnt always understand the harm he's causing by driving chaos into systems. Although most of the time he is still uncomfortable in having a physical form, he adores thematics and getting attention from others. He has an expressive, energetic, rambunctious personality.

At first he poses a serious risk as a genuinely harmful figure in a cotton-candy marshmallow world, and Sulu has to frequently neutralize his actions. This causes a comical nemesis-esc relationship between the two, but in time as he adjusts and copes with his situation he settles down more into a goofy, campy 90's anime rival archetype and the two form a more genuine bond. He becomes great friends with Alpha, forming a "chaos crew" as the two largely goof around and make the most of things. He has a significantly hard time processing emotional turmoil as he's still trying to wrap his head around basic day-to-day functioning, let alone complicated interpersonal conflicts.

Alpha, Felis, Splish:

The other core cast consists of Felis, Splish the fish, and Alpha.

Felis is Sulu's current best friend, as they spend the most time together and work in tandem often. Felis is genuinely an out-of-place-astronaut, as all the other denizens are aquatic creatures. Felis has a classic goofy cat-like personality, they like to be entertained and pal around, but can struggle with serious matters and completing long-form tasks.

Splish is a space safety ranger and works hard to keep everyone safe and happy and within the rules. He employs Sulu's help on the very frequent occasion when he is out of his depth. He doesn't really comprehend serious matters at all, as he belongs squarely to the "marshmallow head" class of sea-space critters. (Felis is capable of processing serious things, but often elects to not engage)

Alpha is a character from Sulu's past, in particular his former closest friend. She and Sulu were incredibly close in their teens and early 20s, but she eventually lost contact as he splintered off and isolated. Alpha gets frustrated with his lack of care towards his own health and functioning, especially how it affects others around him, seeing it as not taking proper responsibility for himself. She clicks with Function not just because they both have very similar bombastic personalities, but also because she admires how dedicated Function is to adjusting to his new circumstances and improve himself. She is wickedly driven, she loves new experiences and exciting things and is overall incredibly active, but can be somewhat introverted. sort of a "i want to do cool things, but only with the 2 people i have allowed into my inner circle". Holds grudges like the dickens.

Setting:

The setting itself is supposed to be a fusion between underwater and space, there are lots of fish, whales, coral formations etc scattered throughout open space. The various planets act more reefs, collecting lots of life and activity. From afar things look more like ""space"" with planets, stars, galaxies, etc, but the actual deinzens tend to resemble either fish or cartoony space aliens. The overall palette is very bright, colorful, and pastel tones to reflect the cheery, cotton-candy environment.

Concept:

Most of the types of problems Sulu, Felis and Splish work on are lighthearted or comical in nature, such as chauffeuring constellations around, babysitting in a stellar nursery, fishing for asteroids, a mediating in a break up between a binary star system, trying to fix the cowlic generated by the hairy ball theorem, cleaning up a milk spill in a galaxy, a magnetar that keeps demagnetizing people's credit cards, things spontaneously gaining more degrees of non-trivial rotational symmetry, neutron star bowling, and other sorts of whimsical space/math problems.

Every so often something more serious pops up, like a quasar posing a legitimate threat or instability in the laws of physics such as a power on a spatial dependence term flickering back and forth, but 90% of the time its cartoony situations, a la regular show. Another equally descriptive statement would be "Cyberchase but with 30-40yr old queer anime people."

Elephant in the room, Sulu is indeed intended to be an outlet/projection/expression of my own struggles with depression and how severe depressive episodes get entangled with my work and social life, but on a more surface level I also enjoy working on this thing because 1) i like drawing fish, 2) i love using vivid colors, and 3) I love being obnoxious about math and physics jokes while stuck in the throes of a physics phd myself.

If Child Reader actually stayed with Vulgrim and wasn’t discovered so soon, I think she would have some uncle/niece relationship with him along with Auntie Dis! Would it be child labor if she helped him with his shop in exchange for food, clothes, and sleep until he finds a way back to Earth? Though, the reactions of the Horsemen when they see S/O just when they want to shop at Vulgrim’s and she’s just like, Hi! 🤗Would be pretty hilarious.

Anon… no joke… but I have that exact dynamic in mind for child reader, Vulgrim and Dis! Legit an uncle/niece/auntie and all it’s beginning glory in Guide Her Way Home part 5!

(Though Dis is set on being called Mama Dis.. SPOILERS!)

Vulgrim would have taken her with him, considering her circumstances. Dis would be over the fucking moon having the lil bub around. ☺️ and yes that would be what she calls you: Lil’ Bub. And as for child labour… not according to Vulgrim and the laws of his domain it’s not. DUN DUN. Now he wouldn’t be like over exerting her or anything, he’d just kinda treat her like that pet he isn’t all lovely dovie fawning over/little assistant. As for Strife and War’s reaction to seeing reader is the VOID of all places…. Yeah, it would be pretty hilarious. 😂

Yes, when the demon trader found you wandering on your lonesome, it was something of an odd happening. How you managed to slip through a serpent hole is his guess. It was hard enough trying to set those pesky summoning rings with the Earth’s intense ward that protected it from any interfering entities. He’s thought that it would have healed right up like a wound.

However, you managed to prove his theory incorrect. When the Horsemen were nowhere to be found, he decided to return to the confines of the void, beckoning you to follow him.

“Well you bring that right on to him, now.” Her arms reach down to gently coheres you into the direction that Vulgrim would be. “Go on, now.”

You sat atop a small ledge, overseeing Vulgrim’s work at the cauldron. He put many strange and mysterious objects in, some making you curiously dip your nose down to see it closer or made you all icky and squirmy.

The book rested against its leaning podium, opened to the book’s centre to reveal a list of ingredients, scribbled texts and drawn illustrations. There was much you didn’t understand, but Vulgrim would turn to the makeshift shelf you were upon, already training you to commit each jar and threaded bundle to memory.

“The jar of imp teeth, youngling and the stock of dried, blood leaves.” His finger angled sharply to the far end of the shelf, watching closely as you moved about. You would shuffle and move along to the jar and pushed it closer to him.

As your reward for helping him craft a powerful potion, he presented you with a loaf of bread which you happily ate with some water, and a small cloak to replace the ratted scarf you still wore from when he first found you. It was soft, comfortable and warm. He then picks you up to retrieve you from the shelf, hesitatingly and sneering.

“Thank you, Uncle Vulgim!” You grin widely and wrap your arms around him to envelop him in a hug. Your soul radiates with that pulsating shine that he winced from, growling to himself to the raw intensity of it. Half the time he had begun draping a veil of blindfold over his eyes just so he wouldn’t be blinded from it. The random moments where that glowing light penetrated through the void, almost burning it.

“Naw, ain’t that the sweetest thing?” Dis chuckles, having floated over to collect the potion that the horsemen would be coming to collect soon along with their usual supplies.

Vulgrim snarls, sharp and aggressive but you don’t flinch at the noise. Dis has to practically peel you from Vulgrim and he nestled to close to her front, her dark nails tender to poke your nose with an affectionate boop.

“Auntie Dis!” You beam, giggling and your small hands reach out to pat and grab at the beautiful curve of her horns. She chuckles again, her lips parted open to produce the sound louder this time. “Now, how’s about you come and help me? We have a few things to get in order for our most recent and important fellas.”

“Okay!”

Vulgrim watches as Dis takes you with her, his breath stifled in the lithe and rattling channel of his shrivelled ribcage as you wave over Dis’ shoulder at him, still grinning.

“I help you soon Uncle Vulgim!”

Dis had left you — just for a moment. She assured you that she would be quick. Vulgrim had sputtered out a strong usage of demonic cusses that Dis found fitting to cover your ears from despite you not being able to understand. She didn’t want you knowing any of those words anytime soon. Apparently during the creation of another potion, something went amiss and Dis needed to help the demon trader turn around his mistake.

“Now, if our customers get here…”

You point at the bottle. “I give ‘em thwis”

“That’s my girl.” Dis is careful whenever she’d pinch the cute apple of your cheeks and you giggle, waving after her until she’s gone.

Some time passes by until you hear the undeniable beat of feet. That’s how you knew that the customers had arrived.

“Where is Dis?” One of them says, his tone carrying an air of annoyance. Something heavy falls to the ground, the cobbles of the platform absorbing the sound with a greasy, muffled thump.

“I do not know,” the other responds, his voice far deeper than the other. They’ve walked past you at this point, wandering over to the pink steaming cauldron Dis occupies with keen knowledge. You’ve always been fascinated about it and it also smells much better than Vulgrim’s concoctions.

The large ledger that you look over has been standing up, hiding you from view. You let it fall against the counter with a thud.

Eyes moving to the two Horsemen, you greet them with a smile. “Hello.”

Both War and Strife flinch, the gunslinging nephilim’s boots rapping on the stone flooring fast. “Whoa, hey hey— what in the hell?”

“A… human child?” War asks, a white brow raised high to hide further beneath his hood.

“I’m Y/N. Nice to meet you!” War and Strife continue to stare, both canvases of something of blank stun.

“Your potion here.” You take a moment to wander behind the counter and come back, carrying a rather large elixir that threatens to topple you back as you carry it towards them.

Strife steps forward to grasp at the bottle’s neck, stabilising you. With an appreciative nod, you let him take the bottle and you perk up, raising a finger as if to tell him to wait. You rush off towards the ledger, using the levelled forms of books that created a small stairway for you and you look over the page.

“What the actual fuck is going on?” Strife whispers to War who shrugs in response. Indeed it is a bewildering sight to behold. A human child of all possible beings to be what they could only imagine being enslaved.

You hum to yourself, thinking and then you beckon the riders over to which they comply. “What dwoes this say?” You ask and point to the number on the page listed next to the elixir bottle.

Ah but of course…

They pass you an amulet containing the payment and you grab it, thanking them for their business.

“Child, may I ask why you’re here?” It’s War who asks. He just wants to ensure you’ve not been imprisoned…

“I’m here with my Uncle Vulgim and Auntie Dis! I am their lil’ helpwer.”

Strife leans down slightly, the colourful adornment of his scarf catching your notice and then you meet the flickering, golden light of his eyes behind his mask.

“Are you alright? Do you need rescuing? Blink twice if you are under any sort of soul contract, duty binding blood-rituals or sacrificial obligation?”

You giggle with a small wrinkle to your nose. Your voice is mousy still tinged with your amused laughter. “You funny.”

“Did you say Uncle and Aunt?”

You nod to War’s question. “Mhm! I did.”

Strife can’t help but lean in close for War’s hearing. “This is obviously some sort of abduction. I say we kill Vulgrim.”

“Without the Navigator gene and those who bear it, there simply would not be an Imperium of Man. At best, Humanity’s control of the stars would be limited to those planets that could entirely support themselves and a few scattered petty empires.”

It is an open secret that the Navigator gene of House Ortellius has been weakening. Initially, rival houses held this secret close to their chest, blackmailing the Great House to share its knowledge with them, in return for keeping their secret. However, the latest Scion has vanished, and with their disappearance came whispers that they had been unable to gaze into the Immaterium at all. Only a few viable Ortellius Navigators remain, spread across the stars and hidden from the rival houses.

Melisandre Ortellius had once briefly held the title of Navis Scion for House Ortellius. She had been born with only minor mutations - membranous webbing that connected her fingers together, and her ears to her jaw. Such minor mutations would have allowed her to be a public figure for the House, socializing amongst nobles and securing contracts. However, at only 6 months, another Ortellius was born, one that showed no visible mutations at birth, and the title of Scion was granted to them. Melisandre only learned that she had once held the title from those training her, mentioned in a brief overview of the recent history of the house.

It didn't matter to her. Her duty was to become a capable Navigator and to guide servants of the Imperium safely through the covetous grasps of the Sea of Souls.

Her first training jump was with an elder of House Ortellius. He had held his position aboard a Merchant ship for centuries - a seasoned Navigator, soon to retire due to physical mutations beginning to limit his abilities. The translation had been flawless. The elder Navigator had shown her how he used a regicide board to interpret the eddies of warp, and she had played the game with him, her own Eye protecting her from the rending gaze of a seasoned Navigator.

Tragedies in the Warp tend to happen quickly.

The catastrophic failure of the Gellar Fields lasted only a second, but a second is all the horrors of the Warp need to wreak total destruction. Melisandre watched as her mentor blossomed into a flower of viscera, split from his Warp eye to his waist by the horrors of the unfiltered Immaterium. His soul screamed, echoing down the bones of the vessel, driving the weak to madness and the strong to despair. It was a miracle from the God-Emperor himself that they managed an emergency exit from the warp with an inexperienced navigator that had not communed with the ship and its machine spirits. Even more so that she had managed to survive the ordeal with only minor cracks in her psyche.

Her training was completed in the spires of House Ortellius, where she cultivated the way in which she interpreted the warp. She had tried to use the regicide board as her mentor had; however found herself plagued with the memory of his blossomed corpse and the blood strewn across the board. Instead, she found that she thrived when interpreting the warp as a crowded ballroom, her dance partner the ship and her its guide. The decline of House Ortellius happened silently behind her training, only coming to her attention when the Scion disappeared. Hiding in shame of their weakening gene, House Ortellius became one of the Shrouded Houses. Only the unscrupulous or desperate were willing to contract an Ortellius Navigator to their vessel - no reputable noble house would dare to be seen with an Ortellius as their Navigator.

It was the unscrupulous who purchased Melisandre’s contract. The Rogue Trader Dynasty Rovarth was well known in the Koronus Expanse for its privateering and blatant disregard for the tenants of the Creed. They had need of a Navigator, and House Ortellius leapt at the chance to serve a Rogue Trader, even one so infamous. Initially Melisandre had been disturbed and disgusted with the operations of the crew and the xenos it harbored. Now, a decade into her service to the Rovarth Dynasty and the Hollow-Blooded Lord Captain, she had grown accustomed to the unsavory actions of the crew, though she would never stoop to join them in their duplicitous behavior. No, she had only two goals in working for the Rovarth Dynasty - restore the name of House Ortellius, and to find a way to save their weakening Gene.
