“An Extremely Gifted Musician:” Sergio Mendes Dies at 83

Sergio Mendes, the Brazilian musician who scored hit records from the 1960s into the 21st century, has died at 83, his family said.

Mendes died Sept. 5 after struggling with long COVID for several months, the family said. He last performed in November 2023.

He “leaves us with an incredible musical legacy from more than six decades of a unique sound first showcased by his band Brasil ’66,” the Mendes family said in a statement.

Mendes released more than 35 albums between 1961’s Dance Moderno and 2020’s In the Key of Joy. His hits included “Mas que Nada,” his cover of the Beatles’ “The Fool on the Hill” and “Never Gonna Let You Go,” among many others.

“Thank you for the music, Sergio,” Craft Recordings said in a statement.

Herb Alpert, who signed Mendes to A&M Records, called the musician “my brother from another country,” in a statement posted to social media.

“He was a true friend and extremely gifted musician who brought Brazilian music in all its iterations to the entire world with elegance and joy,” Alpert said.
