Would it be ok if I asked you some questions about the court reporting academy and your experience with them/the field so far? I'm thinking about taking the leap this spring

Of course!

I can tell you that they're good people and that they absolutely will help you inasmuch as they can. I can tell you not to miss the Monday classes that have to do with Zoom. I can tell you that it can seem very overwhelming but if you slow down and breathe that it will be okay.

As for the field: I'm finding it very interesting myself. Of course I worked in legal transcription for over a decade as well.

I can also tell you that if you can find a court job, take the court job. You'll get benefits. Yes it sounds great to get to work from home, and it is, but honestly I'm not making as much money as I thought I would be. And I have to pay my own taxes, so if you're not into being an independent contractor, try to find a court job or a job with a company that hires you as an employee rather than as an independent contractor. I'm still considering whether or not I want to try to go work for the Milwaukee court system rather than continuing to work from home, at least so that I'm not paying my own taxes.

I can tell you that I sweated a LOT over my certification test but it wasn't really that bad; I can tell you to really pay attention during the live classes, because I wish I had paid more attention; I can tell you that even six months later, I still sweat when I'm asked to perform a readback.

Micro Job Data Entry Opportunities

The term “microwork” refers to tasks that can be completed in just a few seconds or minutes. In most cases, the pay per task is very low. That’s in large part because these tend to be tedious, menial tasks that can be performed by almost anyone with a computer — regardless of their skills or education level.

Still, they are a legit way to make a little bit of extra money in your spare time — especially if that only comes in short and/or inconsistent bursts.

2023 recap and hopes for 2024

So to begin with:

I don't know who will or who might read this; I have more followers than I think, but I'm not sure who actually keeps up with me, and who just plows through and laughs at the memes and gifs and whatnot that I reblog, so, either way, welcome in, get a cup of coffee or tea and let's chat.

Starting off, in January of this year @palaquinn and I started dating, which has been one of the most extraordinary and amazing events in my entire life. I have no words for how happy he makes me, or how fantastic this has been and is.

This has been counterbalanced, however, by the ever-changing and dismal shape the USA is in. In May, I sold the house I had just paid off and moved to Wisconsin, after literal decades of declaring that I would never again live above the Mason-Dixon Line. However, Brian Kemp and the Republican dominated state legislature of Georgia forced my family's flight.

So far, it has been lovely, other than some growing pains -- I warned my Bee that the school system in the North was more stringent than that of Georgia, and on top of that, we moved to a suburb where the local high school is dedicated to ensuring the success of their students. Coming from an underserved school where probably 85% of the staff were overworked and burnt out, this came as a shock to their system. They are doing much better than they were, however, and we live in hope that they'll scrape by and pass this semester.

The town itself is very cute -- the downtown area especially could be a Hallmark Movie set -- and I intend next year to try and find some sort of ...I don't know. Club or something where I can try to make IRL friends. A book club or a knitting/crochet circle or something.

Workwise -- both day job and writing wise -- has not been fruitful this year at all, which is personally disappointing but at the same time both my therapist and some of my friends have said, Marbles, you've been healing. The last year at day job was so draining, and then you got dropkicked in the stomach by Jody's death. You've been healing; no wonder you haven't been writing. No wonder you haven't been able to work as you used to. So while I still feel guilty, I don't feel as guilty as I did a few months ago.

So 2023 has been extremely eventful; not in a bad way, either. It has been horribly stressful from time to time, but for the most part, all of the changes have been good ones.

Hopes and plans for 2024:

I'm putting through an application for a scholarship to an online court reporting school. I should graduate it before my birthday in March, and after that, I intend to either find a local court reporting firm to work for, or to go to work for the State or a local court system.

I intend to get certified both as an electronic court reporter and as an electronic transcriptionist through AAERT no later than June. I've been working as an electronic transcriptionist since 2008, full-time since 2010, and I've always kind of gaffed off the certification because I was afraid of failing, and the cost to take the certification tests are pretty high. But the certs will give me the opportunity to charge more for my work, and it'll look a lot better on my applications to either the courts or a court reporting firm.

Writing wise, I'd really like to get a zero draft finished. I don't really care what project, any of them will do, I just want to finish something. That kind of goes for my knitting, too; I'd really like to finish the blanket for Bee that has been languishing for so very, very long.

So I have some definite goals for 2024, and I have plans; I just need to work those plans in order for the plans to work. And I can do it. I know I can. I have so much support, so much vocal and real support now; Jody always meant well, he did support me in his own way, but it faded over the years. And that's okay.

Tour of Britain: Carpenter Conquers Stage 2 in Devon

Carpenter Prevails to Win Tour of Britain Stage Two

Robin Carpenter became the first American ever to win a stage in the Tour of Britain, as he held off a late surging peloton to snatch the blue jersey off stage one winner Wout Van Aaert who did not contest the sprint for second place.

Carpenter, who rides for Rally Cycling, lead a solo 25km breakaway group eventually finishing 33 seconds ahead of Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) and Alex Peters (SwiftCarbon Pro Cycling).

  In a gruelling 184km route from Sherford to Exeter, the 29-year-old moved clear of the rest peloton early on as part of a five-man breakaway group, but as they day progressed, the Philadelphian went from strength to strength, slowly dispatching his opponents as they fell victim to what turned out to be a tough stage. Three category two climbs saw early separations in the peloton, with Carpenter making the most of the intermediate sprints to beat Jacob Scott (Canyon dhb SunGod) at both around the 60km mark.

  As the race meandered through Dartmoor National Park, the climbs of Rundlestone (6.8km at 4 percent) and Warren House Inn (4.6km at 2.4 per cent) lay after 132.3 and 147.8 kilometres, before two more unclassified hills inside the final 30km saw the leading pack spread even thinner, with Carpenter able to lose Scott on a climb just outside Moretonhampstead with 25km remaining.

The American peddled through to the largely flat remaining 10km into Exeter with a commanding four minute lead, although a dramatic late surge from the trailing riders almost saw his lead snatched away. With the leader visibly struggling to close out the race, his advantage fell to 2:20 with just 5km remaining, and then even further to under a minute as he crossed the line 33 seconds ahead of Ethan Hayter.

  Despite this, it was a memorable ride from Carpenter, and one that no one would have expected going into the stage.

“I’ve been wanting a win in Europe for a number of years now and I’ve come really close so it feels amazing,” Carpenter said after the stage.

“We’ve had a lot of success in the last few weeks, and this just builds on it. The leader’s jersey is definitely something I didn’t expect but I’m very, very excited.

“We still had five minutes at 40 kilometres to go so I knew I just had to get rid of everyone else and not worry about babying anyone else to the line or having to worry about anyone outsprinting me. I’ve been out-sprinted before on finishes like this.

“I really wanted the stage win and the leader’s jersey is a big plus. I’ll try to defend it as best I can but I’m not really a climber – you’ll see that on stage 4. I’m just really thankful for this opportunity.”

The tour moves on to Carmarthenshire for the first of two stages in Wales, where it will host only the third team time trail in the event’s history. It follows a hilly 18.2km route from Ffairfach, Llandeilo to the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
