How AI is improving simulations with smarter sampling techniques


Imagine you’re tasked with sending a team of football players onto a field to assess the condition of the grass (a likely task for them, of course). If you pick their positions randomly, they might cluster together in some areas while completely neglecting others. But if you give them a strategy, like spreading out uniformly across the field, you might get a far more accurate picture of the grass condition.
Now, imagine needing to spread out not just in two dimensions, but across tens or even hundreds. That’s the challenge MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) researchers are getting ahead of. They’ve developed an AI-driven approach to “low-discrepancy sampling,” a method that improves simulation accuracy by distributing data points more uniformly across space.
A key novelty lies in using graph neural networks (GNNs), which allow points to “communicate” and self-optimize for better uniformity. Their approach marks a pivotal enhancement for simulations in fields like robotics, finance, and computational science, particularly in handling complex, multidimensional problems critical for accurate simulations and numerical computations.
“In many problems, the more uniformly you can spread out points, the more accurately you can simulate complex systems,” says T. Konstantin Rusch, lead author of the new paper and MIT CSAIL postdoc. “We’ve developed a method called Message-Passing Monte Carlo (MPMC) to generate uniformly spaced points, using geometric deep learning techniques. This further allows us to generate points that emphasize dimensions which are particularly important for a problem at hand, a property that is highly important in many applications. The model’s underlying graph neural networks lets the points ‘talk’ with each other, achieving far better uniformity than previous methods.”
Their work was published in the September issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Take me to Monte Carlo
The idea of Monte Carlo methods is to learn about a system by simulating it with random sampling. Sampling is the selection of a subset of a population to estimate characteristics of the whole population. Historically, it was already used in the 18th century, when mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace employed it to estimate the population of France without having to count each individual.
Low-discrepancy sequences, which are sequences with low discrepancy, i.e., high uniformity, such as Sobol’, Halton, and Niederreiter, have long been the gold standard for quasi-random sampling, which exchanges random sampling with low-discrepancy sampling. They are widely used in fields like computer graphics and computational finance, for everything from pricing options to risk assessment, where uniformly filling spaces with points can lead to more accurate results.
The MPMC framework suggested by the team transforms random samples into points with high uniformity. This is done by processing the random samples with a GNN that minimizes a specific discrepancy measure.
One big challenge of using AI for generating highly uniform points is that the usual way to measure point uniformity is very slow to compute and hard to work with. To solve this, the team switched to a quicker and more flexible uniformity measure called L2-discrepancy. For high-dimensional problems, where this method isn’t enough on its own, they use a novel technique that focuses on important lower-dimensional projections of the points. This way, they can create point sets that are better suited for specific applications.
The implications extend far beyond academia, the team says. In computational finance, for example, simulations rely heavily on the quality of the sampling points. “With these types of methods, random points are often inefficient, but our GNN-generated low-discrepancy points lead to higher precision,” says Rusch. “For instance, we considered a classical problem from computational finance in 32 dimensions, where our MPMC points beat previous state-of-the-art quasi-random sampling methods by a factor of four to 24.”
Robots in Monte Carlo
In robotics, path and motion planning often rely on sampling-based algorithms, which guide robots through real-time decision-making processes. The improved uniformity of MPMC could lead to more efficient robotic navigation and real-time adaptations for things like autonomous driving or drone technology. “In fact, in a recent preprint, we demonstrated that our MPMC points achieve a fourfold improvement over previous low-discrepancy methods when applied to real-world robotics motion planning problems,” says Rusch.
“Traditional low-discrepancy sequences were a major advancement in their time, but the world has become more complex, and the problems we’re solving now often exist in 10, 20, or even 100-dimensional spaces,” says Daniela Rus, CSAIL director and MIT professor of electrical engineering and computer science. “We needed something smarter, something that adapts as the dimensionality grows. GNNs are a paradigm shift in how we generate low-discrepancy point sets. Unlike traditional methods, where points are generated independently, GNNs allow points to ‘chat’ with one another so the network learns to place points in a way that reduces clustering and gaps — common issues with typical approaches.”
Going forward, the team plans to make MPMC points even more accessible to everyone, addressing the current limitation of training a new GNN for every fixed number of points and dimensions.
“Much of applied mathematics uses continuously varying quantities, but computation typically allows us to only use a finite number of points,” says Art B. Owen, Stanford University professor of statistics, who wasn’t involved in the research. “The century-plus-old field of discrepancy uses abstract algebra and number theory to define effective sampling points. This paper uses graph neural networks to find input points with low discrepancy compared to a continuous distribution. That approach already comes very close to the best-known low-discrepancy point sets in small problems and is showing great promise for a 32-dimensional integral from computational finance. We can expect this to be the first of many efforts to use neural methods to find good input points for numerical computation.”
Rusch and Rus wrote the paper with University of Waterloo researcher Nathan Kirk, Oxford University’s DeepMind Professor of AI and former CSAIL affiliate Michael Bronstein, and University of Waterloo Statistics and Actuarial Science Professor Christiane Lemieux. Their research was supported, in part, by the AI2050 program at Schmidt Futures, Boeing, the United States Air Force Research Laboratory and the United States Air Force Artificial Intelligence Accelerator, the Swiss National Science Foundation, Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and an EPSRC Turing AI World-Leading Research Fellowship.

So the AI ask wasn't spam. I'd highly encourage you to do some research into how AI actually works, because it is neither particularly harmful to the environment, nor is it actually plagiarism.
Ignoring all of that however, my issue is that, fine, if you don't like AI, whatever. But people get so vitriolic about it. Regardless of your opinions on if it's valid art, your blog is usually a very positive place. It was kind of shocking to see you post something saying "fuck you if you disagree with me, your're a disgrace to the community." Just felt uncharacteristicly mean.
Even if you insist AI isn’t actively harmful to the environment or other writers (and the research I have done suggests it is, feel free to send me additional reading) and you simply MUST use prompts to generate personal content, nobody has any business posting it in a creative space for authors, which was the specific complaint addressed in that original post. While I’ll never say “fuck you for who you are as a person” on this blog, I might very well say “fuck you for harmful or rude actions you’ve taken willingly,” which is what that post was about.
Ao3 and similar platforms are designed as an archive for fan content and not a personal storage place for AI prompt results. It is simply not an appropriate place. If you look in the notes of the previous ask you will see other people have brought up additional reasons they have concerns about this practice.
A note on environmental effects for those who might not know: Generative AI requires MASSIVE amounts of data computers operating. As anyone who has held a laptop in their lap or run Civ VII on an aging desktop computer, computer équipement generates a lot of heat. Even some home and small-industrial computers have water-cooling systems. The amount of water demanded by AI computers is massive, even as parts of the world (even in America) experience water shortages. Besides this, it consumes a lot of power. The rising demand for AI and the improvements demanded to keep it viable mean this problem will continue to scale up rather than improve. Of course, those who benefit from the use of AI continue to downplay these concerns, and money is being funneled into convincing the public that these are not real concerns.
I have been openly against the use of generative AI, especially for art and writing, since its popularity rose in the last couple years. I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer about this stance sooner. I have asked my followers to alert me if I proliferate or share AI content, and continue to do so.

The FIA had crossed the line. Again. In a shock to nobody.
A new rule had come into place penalizing drivers for swearing in post-race interviews and the race. Ridiculous. Absolutely fucking ridiculous. The grid was in an uproar, but no one had the power to do anything about it. No one except Y/N Vettel.
If there was one person who could go toe-to-toe with the FIA and emerge victorious, it was her. A formidable lawyer, sharp as a blade, and just as relentless as her brother, Sebastian Vettel, in a fight. The drivers had learned long ago not to underestimate her. But this? This was war.
And Y/N was ready as ever.
“What are they gonna do? Fine us for every ‘shit’ or ‘fuck’ we let slip?” Lando scoffed, shaking his head as he, Charles, and Max sat in a conference room waiting for Y/N.
“They already have,” Carlos muttered, tossing a paper on the table. This was unacceptable. How were the drivers not allowed to CURSE? Were they toddlers?!
Y/N entered the room with a folder in hand, slamming it down with a force that made George sit up straighter. “Alright, let’s get one thing straight,” she began, voice crisp. “This rule is unconstitutional, violates multiple freedom of expression precedents, and is fundamentally stupid.”
“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” Hamilton said with an approving nod.
Y/N continued, eyes glinting. “The FIA is overstepping. Swearing is not slander, it is not defamatory, and it is not harming anyone except for some pearl-clutching bureaucrats who think drivers should be robots. I am filing a formal challenge.”
“A lawsuit?” Charles asked, eyebrows raised.
“A lawsuit,” Y/N confirmed, leaning forward. “We will argue that this rule is vague, arbitrary, and restricts free speech. We’ll also highlight that no other sport enforces such nonsense. If footballers can scream expletives mid-match and not get fined, why should you?”
Daniel Ricciardo grinned. “You are actually my hero.”
Max, arms crossed, smirked. “This is going to be fun.”
It was finally courtroom day.
The FIA’s lawyers sat across from Y/N, already shifting uncomfortably in their seats. She was poised, calm, and radiating pure authority. Dressed in an all black ensemble she looked like she ate losers for breakfast.
The lead FIA attorney cleared his throat. “Ms. Vettel, the FIA merely wishes to maintain a professional environment in post-race interviews for viewers.”
Y/N tilted her head, her smile sharp. “Define ‘professional,’ then. Because as far as I know, passion is part of the sport. Swearing out of frustration, joy, or sheer adrenaline doesn’t harm anyone. If anything, it makes drivers more relatable. Unless, of course, the FIA prefers that they all sound like pre-programmed AI.”
Murmurs from the audience. The drivers, seated together in the back, exchanged smirks.
“Furthermore,” Y/N continued, “this rule is selectively enforced. Are you prepared to produce data showing that every instance of swearing has caused a dip in viewership or complaints? Or will I have to subpoena past race interviews to prove bias?” (guys im sorry I googled most used lawyer terms so idk if its correct or not)
The FIA’s lawyers hesitated.
Y/N leaned in. “Let’s talk precedents. In 2019, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that sports organizations cannot impose arbitrary speech restrictions unless they are justified by legitimate concerns. Tell me, gentlemen, what legitimate concern does the FIA have?”
The lead attorney fumbled with his papers.
Y/N smirked. “Nothing? Thought so.”
She turned to the judge. “We are requesting an injunction on this rule, as it is vague, inconsistently enforced, and lacks merit. We also seek damages for the fines already imposed.”
The judge glanced at the FIA’s team. “Do you have a counterargument?”
Silence.
Carlos leaned over to Charles. “She’s terrifying.”
“I know,” Charles whispered. “It’s bloody amazing.”
The ruling came swiftly. The swearing fines were scrapped.
The drivers were ecstatic. In celebration, Daniel made it his mission to curse as colorfully as possible in his next interview, just because he could.
Y/N received a round of applause when she walked back into the paddock that weekend. Max, standing off to the side, simply smiled. “Proud of you, schat.”
She nudged him playfully. “You should be. I’m basically the FIA’s worst nightmare now.”
Max grinned. “Oh, you definitely are.”
And she loved it.
Later that night, the drivers sat around in the paddock lounge, laughing as Lando held up his phone, Sebastian's name glowing on the screen.
“Do it, do it!” Charles urged, barely holding back his grin.
Lando hit the call button and put it on speaker. The dial tone rang before Sebastian picked up. “Lando?”
“Seb!” Lando beamed. “Mate, your sister is an absolute legend.”
Sebastian chuckled. “I assume she won?”

Have you got any thoughts to share about Sphene? I saw your post about how misrepresented FFXIV’s female characters are, and I’ve been hoping to see anything more than the typical “Evil AI colonizer etc.” or “Tragic woman who can never change ever” or “Wuk Lamat’s girlfriend”. Maybe our interpretations will differ but I’ll be happy if you can provide anything more complex than those.
Sure! Throwing all this under a read-more for anyone who hasn't finished 7.0 yet. I think I'll probably expand on this more later but wanted to get initial thoughts down. (Note after writing: I meant this to be brief but uhhhh brevity is not my strong suit sorry. This take just sort of ends abruptly because I realize I'm rambling.) Again, spoilers through the end of 7.0 MSQ.
I think Sphene is the sharpest work the game has done yet in casting the antagonist as the noble double of the protagonist (a well it returns to a lot with Emet, and Zenos, and Golbez, and...). But because the protagonist here is Wuk Lamat and not the Warrior of Light, that's also a much more defined and interesting role. To me, Wuk Lamat is, above all, the Righteous Queen, who rules thoughtfully, wisely, and justly, and whose claim to the throne is justified by her moral clarity. Sphene, in turn, is also a wise and good queen, one who undertakes all her actions with her people first in her hearts, a sense of compassion towards all, and a clear eye for the consequences and costs of her intended course of action. And it leads to utter disaster, for her, her people, and the people of Tural. That rocks!
The first half of 7.0 is about justifying the fact that Wuk Lamat's going to be Dawnservant. Wuk Lamat is compassionate, curious, wise, and open-minded. She wins over rebels and malcontents not by asserting her authority or by strength of force, but by taking her obligations to them (as her subjects) seriously. She knows many of her subjects personally and takes a great interest in their lives, and she respects even those who openly oppose her.
And everything Wuk Lamat does, Sphene does to 11. Wuk Lamat respects her subject peoples and is curious about their cultures? Sphene forcibly annexes Yyasulani, but goes out of her way and expends Alexandria's limited resources to enable the remaining Xak Turali to live in their accustomed way if desired (…to the extent allowed by the new permanent lightning storms and the internal conflicts caused by regulator adoption). Wuk Lamat cares about her people not just in the abstract but as individuals? Sphene visits sick kids, knows them by name! Wuk Lamat understands the burden of rulership is too great and cedes half her power to her brother? Sphene recognizes her own weaknesses and makes a deal with the devil to keep Alexandria's culture alive! Wuk Lamat is willing to die for her people? Sphene will forcibly traumatize herself into being a better queen, if that's what rulership demands.
For an expansion that spends the first half being like "wow isn't this perfect candidate for the crown so likable and humble? wouldn't it be nice to be ruled by a good king?," it sure is funny that the final boss is THE QUEEN ETERNAL and she hits you with attacks like LEGITIMATE FORCE and ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY and ROYAL DOMAIN. This, to me, is Sphene's role: she complicates and questions the themes we've developed in the first half. Most importantly to me, she makes us ask: what is devotion to a people or culture even worth?
There's a thing I kept thinking of constantly during Dawntrail, not because I think it directly influenced the game in any way but because the parallels were so stark and startling. It's Jonathan Hickman's New Avengers #18 (2014). Truthfully, I'm not a big comics guy; I only know this sequence because Ta-Nehisi Coates cited it as inspiration for his Black Panther run on Twitter once (I also didn't read TNC's run, I was following him for politics talk). Forgive me, comics people, if I get any details wrong. The parallels are almost comical, though. It goes like this:
A superhuman secret society formed of some of the smartest heroes (and villains) in the land re-forms to oppose an existential threat caused by incursions from other dimensions that threaten to cause literal collisions between Earth and its alternate dimension counterparts. Seeing no other alternatives, they undertake work on a weapon to destroy these other worlds. T'challa—king of a fictional hyperadvanced nation called Wakanda, and also the superhuman Black Panther—meets with his ghostly predecessors, the previous Black Panthers/kings, for he fears the moral stain on his soul and the souls of the people of Wakanda, if they survive explicitly by killing their alternate counterparts, will be too heavy to bear. His ancestors are not impressed.


To them, there is no question at all. A king's duty may be complex in the execution, but it is simple in its conception. Your people come before all others. Always. This is, must be, the fundamental ethic of a good king. To do otherwise would be a betrayal of the social order on which this imagined good monarchy is built. In a situation like this, the only option is to do what you must to protect them. "Will there be a cost? Yes. Might the universe burn? Let it. . . . You will kill them all if it means Wakanda stands. The golden city must never fall."

"I will do what I must" is Sphene's guiding principle. It is so important to her that when she recognizes that her sentimental attachments are making her waver in her duty, she severs them entirely, sacrificing her whole identity to the throne. It is also implicitly Wuk Lamat's position: she has no choice but to fight Sphene because to do otherwise would be to fail to protect her people. In fact, it's briefly even sort of the Warrior of Light's position, as when you tell Sphene before her trial that you understand what you must do, which is shut her down to protect others.
(One quick thought about the Warrior of Light: one cool thing about the antagonist this time being a double in a more exact way than Emet or Zenos is that it means other characters get a chance to relate to her differently than Wuk Lamat. The Warrior of Light, for example, is pressed into her service immediately upon your first meeting as the Queen's Champion, there to defend her if need be against all evil. This role is further affirmed by both robot Otis and Endless Otis, who essentially hand off their role as her knight to you, and reinforced when you flash back to the "might I call upon your aid" moment right before the end. Except, of course, you are loyal not just to her, but to the principles she represents, which her own acts betray, and so your ultimate act of aid is to essentially pass judgment on her and execute her. In a sense, you become the internal safeguard that a political system is supposed to have to protect against this very issue, and which Alexandria explicitly lost when it cast out/forgot Otis. Very Voeburt/ShB tank quests, it owns.)
But really, it's Sphene who embodies this sort of grim logic best. Aside from her transformation into the Queen Eternal, it's also why she suggests you simply become Alexandrians. It's the only way for her to reconcile her values and worldview, which have backed her into a corner where preserving Alexandria has come to mean a maximalist declaration of war on all life outside its borders because the kind of absolutely pain-free life she envisions for her citizens is completely unsustainable.
In this reading, one of Sphene's main beats is to unsettle what has preceded her in MSQ. In nearly all respects, she shares your values. She prizes life, is curious about other cultures, believes in the greatest good for the greatest possible number. But she is also a queen, and therefore irrevocably (in her eyes) tied to her state. Gulool Ja Ja and Wuk Lamat (and Koana) are the mythical wise rulers, thank god--but what if Wuk had inherited a Turali state that wasn't desperately in need of cross-cultural understanding, but one in a state of war? What value would her deep love for the people of Tural have held then? Sphene says, it would have held no value. If the survival of your people means harming the innocent, you harm the innocent. Kingship allows for no alternatives.
But she also concedes, in the very next breath, that she is still kind of wrong. Because what happened here was not inevitable, despite her programming (a brief note: to me Sphene being programmed is exactly the same as Emet being maybe-tempered, it's a fantasy gloss on the idea of social and cultural education. "I was programmed for this" is really no different from "I was trained and educated for this"), because the truth is that this kind of thoughtful, principled devotion to the state and its people is also a form of sentimental attachment, in the end. One that is maintained not because it is natural, and necessary, but because the monarch, too, likes it, and gets something from it.
In so many ways, in so many senses, the monarch is the state. Kings and queens may fancy themselves merely a reflection of their people's needs and desires, but of course even a cursory glance at history will tell you that far more often, states reflect their rulers. Sphene and Wuk Lamat both suggest that their conflict was inevitable, but was it? Or is the truth, as Sphene glancingly acknowledges here, that she turned her own fears and desires into the same policy goals that led to this tragedy? And if so...what does that say of our Good Queen, Wuk Lamat? Perhaps this could be different if they met earlier, says Wuk Lamat. But when? When did Wuk Lamat ever not love her people so dearly that she would not have sacrificed herself for them, or caused mass death for the sake of their survival? When did Sphene not believe the Endless to be people, or the preservation of Alexandria to be the most important thing? Maybe she means "had we met before you met Zoraal Ja," but of course, we the player actually saw their meeting. And we know that Sphene even then was not the hapless naif she'd like to pretend. She always knew exactly what she was doing.
We know the price of this kind of thinking, this Hobbesian view that states are engaged in a struggle of all against all. Living Memory lets you walk through it. To preserve Tural, we exterminate the Endless. We befriend them, learn about their lives, promise to remember them, and then we destroy them and their homes, leaving nothing but a bleak blank landscape and the sound of wind. This is what Sphene would have done to Tural and Eorzea. Indeed, it's what she's already doing to the people of Yyasulani, because no amount of well-intentioned aid can make up for trapping people under the dome for 30 years and systematically eroding their culture through the resonators.
To me, this is what makes Sphene really work, that way she has of forcing Wuk Lamat and the player to commit the same kinds of sins she has. We'd like to think ourselves better than her, but of course, we've already reconciled with and integrated Mamook's brutal eugenicist regime back into Turali society well before we ever met Sphene. At the end of our long "wow isn't having a wise queen cool???" expansion, we are met with "Legitimate Force" and "Absolute Authority" and see them for what they truly are: nothing but tools of violence. No longer does the idea of the Warrior of Light hanging around Tural as Wuk Lamat's advisor have the same attraction, now that we have been reminded of the way the putatively unquestionable logic of kingship can ultimately lock even the wisest and kindest rulers into a path of war and exploitation and destruction.
I think Sphene is FFXIV's most interesting and nuanced depiction yet of a leader. She really, truly, wants nothing more than to save her people and protect them from pain. But even seemingly loving and compassionate goals like these can readily lead us down dark paths. She's a "hard men make hard choices"-type character, a noble but misguided opponent, but as a loving and elegant fairy queen instead of a grizzled knight or extremely sad man. She fucking rocks.

AI continues to be useful, annoying everyone
Okay, look - as much as I've been fairly on the side of "this is actually a pretty incredible technology that does have lots of actual practical uses if used correctly and with knowledge of its shortfalls" throughout the ongoing "AI era", I must admit - I don't use it as a tool too much myself.
I am all too aware of how small errors can slip in here and there, even in output that seems above the level, and, perhaps more importantly, I still have a bit of that personal pride in being able to do things myself! I like the feeling that I have learned a skill, done research on how to do a thing and then deployed that knowledge to get the result I want. It's the bread and butter of working in tech, after all.
But here's the thing, once you move beyond beginner level Python courses and well-documented windows applications. There will often be times when you will want to achieve a very particular thing, which involves working with a specialist application. This will usually be an application written for domain experts of this specialization, and so it will not be user-friendly, and it will certainly not be "outsider-friendly".
So you will download the application. Maybe it's on the command line, has some light scripting involved in a language you've never used, or just has a byzantine shorthand command structure. There is a reference document - thankfully the authors are not that insane - but there are very few examples, and none doing exactly what you want. In order to do the useful thing you want to do, they expect you to understand how the application/platform/scripting language works, to the extent that you can apply it in a novel context.
Which is all fine and well, and normally I would not recommend anybody use a tool at length unless they have taken the time to understand it to the degree at which they know what they are doing. Except I do not wish to use the tool at length, I wish to do one, singular operation, as part of a larger project, and then never touch it again. It is unfortunately not worth my time for me to sink a few hours into learning a technology that you will use once for twenty seconds and then never again.
So you spend time scouring the specialist forums, pulling up a few syntax examples you find randomly of their code and trying to string together the example commands in the docs. If you're lucky, and the syntax has enough in common with something you're familiar with, you should be able to bodge together something that works in 15-20 minutes.
But if you're not lucky, the next step would have been signing up to that forum, or making a post on that subreddit, creating a thread called "Hey, newbie here, needing help with..." and then waiting 24-48 hours to hear back from somebody probably some years-deep veteran looking down on you with scorn for not having put in the effort to learn their Thing, setting aside the fact that you have no reason to normally. It's annoying, disruptive, and takes time.
Now I can ask ChatGPT, and it will have ingested all those docs, all those forums, and it will give you a correct answer in 20 seconds about what you were doing wrong. Because friends, this is where a powerful attention model excels, because you are not asking it to manage a complex system, but to collate complex sources into a simple synthesis. The LLM has already trained in this inference, and it can reproduce it in the blink of an eye, and then deliver information about this inference in the form of a user dialog.
When people say that AI is the future of tutoring, this is what it means. Instead of waiting days to get a reply from a bored human expert, the machine knowledge blender has already got it ready to retrieve via a natural language query, with all the followup Q&A to expand your own knowledge you could desire. And the great thing about applying this to code or scripting syntax is that you can immediately verify whether the output is correct but running it and seeing if it performs as expected, so a lot of the danger is reduced (not that any modern mainstream attention model is likely to make a mistake on something as simple a single line command unless it's something barely documented online, that is).
It's incredibly useful, and it outdoes the capacity of any individual human researcher, as well as the latency of existing human experts. That's something you can't argue we've ever had better before, in any context, and it's something you can actively make use of today. And I will, because it's too good not to - despite my pride.

I have a theory that one of the primary drivers behind the federal government's drive to sell off millions of acres of our collective national treasures out west is to drill and dig more fossil fuels to power a proliferation of data centers around the country. Doug Burgum, current Secretary of the Interior, is an ex-Microsoft technocrat who no doubt has friends in the IT world counting on his leadership to exploit natural resources on BLM land to fuel expansion of AI and other operations at their data centers. These data centers require enormous amounts of electricity to cool their facilities and have a non-trivial impact on the environment. But in a country now run at the pleasure of billionaire technocrats, such as Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel, and others, there is no greater need than to serve their own wealth and well-being. The rest of us pay the price, literally, for their self-service. A case in point is an enormous data center proposed within walking distance of two of West Virginia's most popular tourist towns, Thomas and Davis. Ten thousand acres worth of buildings, infrastructure, noise, light pollution and environmental devastation in heart of West Virginia's most beautiful mountain country. The West Virginia DNR is actively helping the data center's owner to hide crucial information about pollutants. This is absolute, fucking madness. But this is the world the billionaire technocrats imagine for themselves, and they're not interested in what the rest of us think or how we are impacted by their decisions. What I can say is, as of today, we all still have a vote and come mid-terms there is an opportunity to course correct, to take the power away from the billionaire technocrats and their supporters in Congress to sell off our public lands (which we collecively own) and plant their data centers without regulation and oversight wherever they please. This is a generational fight and it may be our last chance to assert the authority of the people to save our public lands.

Unfortunate as it is, copyright law is the only practical leverage most people have to fight against tech companies scraping their work for commercial usage without their permission, especially people who also don't have union power to leverage either. Even people who prefer to upload their work for free online shouldn't be taken advantage of; Just because something is available for free online doesn't mean that it's freely available for someone to profit from in any way, especially if the author did not authorize it.
Okay Nonny. Bear with me, you’re not gonna like how I start this and probably not how I finish it either, but I do have a point in the middle. So.
There is in fact long established precedent for people being allowed to profit off of various uses of others’ work without permission, in ways that creative types in general and fandom specifically tend to wholeheartedly approve of. Parody, collage, fanart commissions, unauthorized merch, monetized reaction or analysis videos on youtube, these are significantly clearer cut examples of actually *using* copyrighted material in your own work than the generative ai case. And except for fanart commissions and unauthorized merch, which mostly live off of copyright holders staying cool about it, these are all explicitly permitted under copyright law.
Now, the generative ai case has some conflicting factors around it. On the one hand, it’s not only blatantly transformative to the point where the dataset cannot be recognized in the end result (and when it overfits and comes out with something not sufficiently transformative, that’s covered by preexisting copyright law), it also doesn’t exactly *use* the copyrighted work the way other transformative uses do. A parody riffs off a particular other work, or a few particular other works. A collage or a reaction video uses individual pieces of other works. Generative AI doesn’t do that, it comes up with patterns based on having looked at what a huge number of other works have in common. Like if a formulaic writing/art advice book were instead a robot artist. But on the other hand, the AI that was trained is potentially being used to compete in the same market as the work it was trained on. That “competition in the same market” element is why fan merch and fanart commissions rely on sufferance, rather than legality. That’s part of fair use too. So perhaps there’s some case to be made against AI from that perspective. *But*… the genAI creations, while competing in the same market as some of their training data, are *a lot more different from that training data* than a fanart is from an official art. To a significant degree the most similar comparison here isn’t other types of transformative work it’s… a person who learns to write by reading a lot. They’ll end up competing in the same market as some of *their* training data too. But of course that doesn’t *feel* the same. For starters, that’s *one person* adding themselves to the competition pool. An AI is adding *everyone who uses the AI* to the competition pool. It may be a similar process, but the end result is much more disruptive. Generative AI is going to make making a living off art even harder - and even finding cool *free* art harder - by flooding the market with crap at a whole new scale. That sucks! It’s shitty, and it feels hideously unfair that it uses artists’ work to do it, and people have decided to label this unfairness “theft”. Now, I do not think that is an accurate label and I’ve reached the point of being really frustrated and annoyed about it, on a personal level. Not all things that are unfair are theft and just saying “theft” louder each time is not actually an argument for why something should be considered theft. An analogy I like here: If someone used art you made to make a collage campaigning against your right to make that art (I can picture some assholes doing this with, say, selfies of drag queens), that would feel violating. It would feel unfair. It would suck! But it wouldn’t be theft or plagiarism.
…*And* on whatever hand we’re on now, my own first thought *was* “Okay well, on the one hand when you look at the mechanics this is pretty obviously less infringing than collage or parody, which I don’t think should be banned, but… maybe we can make a special extra strict copyright that applies only to AI? Just because of how this sucks.” And you know, maybe I’m wrong about my current stance and that’s still a good idea! But there seems to be a lack of caution regarding what sorts of rulings are being invited. It seems like some people are running towards any interpretation of copyright that slows down AI, regardless of what *else* it implies. Maybe I’m wrong! I’m no expert. Maybe it’ll be fine and maybe I’m just too pissed at anti-ai shit to see this clearly. I really wish the AI people had done open calls requesting people to add their work to the datasets, for which I think they would have gotten a lot of uptake before the public turned against AI. Maybe if we do end up with copyright protections against AI training that’ll happen and everything’ll be drastically improved. I dunno.
But I get fucking nervous and freaked out at OTW sending DMCA takedowns as a form of agitation for increased copyright protection and I think that’s a reasonable emotional response.

Charity Majors, CTO & Co-Founder at Honeycomb – Interview Series
Charity is an ops engineer and accidental startup founder at Honeycomb. Before this she worked at Parse, Facebook, and Linden Lab on infrastructure and developer tools, and always seemed to wind up running the databases. She is the co-author of O’Reilly’s Database Reliability Engineering, and loves free speech, free software, and single malt scotch.
You were the Production Engineering Manager at Facebook (Now Meta) for over 2 years, what were some of your highlights from this period and what are some of your key takeaways from this experience?
I worked on Parse, which was a backend for mobile apps, sort of like Heroku for mobile. I had never been interested in working at a big company, but we were acquired by Facebook. One of my key takeaways was that acquisitions are really, really hard, even in the very best of circumstances. The advice I always give other founders now is this: if you’re going to be acquired, make sure you have an executive sponsor, and think really hard about whether you have strategic alignment. Facebook acquired Instagram not long before acquiring Parse, and the Instagram acquisition was hardly bells and roses, but it was ultimately very successful because they did have strategic alignment and a strong sponsor.
I didn’t have an easy time at Facebook, but I am very grateful for the time I spent there; I don’t know that I could have started a company without the lessons I learned about organizational structure, management, strategy, etc. It also lent me a pedigree that made me attractive to VCs, none of whom had given me the time of day until that point. I’m a little cranky about this, but I’ll still take it.
Could you share the genesis story behind launching Honeycomb?
Definitely. From an architectural perspective, Parse was ahead of its time — we were using microservices before there were microservices, we had a massively sharded data layer, and as a platform serving over a million mobile apps, we had a lot of really complicated multi-tenancy problems. Our customers were developers, and they were constantly writing and uploading arbitrary code snippets and new queries of, shall we say, “varying quality” — and we just had to take it all in and make it work, somehow.
We were on the vanguard of a bunch of changes that have since gone mainstream. It used to be that most architectures were pretty simple, and they would fail repeatedly in predictable ways. You typically had a web layer, an application, and a database, and most of the complexity was bound up in your application code. So you would write monitoring checks to watch for those failures, and construct static dashboards for your metrics and monitoring data.
This industry has seen an explosion in architectural complexity over the past 10 years. We blew up the monolith, so now you have anywhere from several services to thousands of application microservices. Polyglot persistence is the norm; instead of “the database” it’s normal to have many different storage types as well as horizontal sharding, layers of caching, db-per-microservice, queueing, and more. On top of that you’ve got server-side hosted containers, third-party services and platforms, serverless code, block storage, and more.
The hard part used to be debugging your code; now, the hard part is figuring out where in the system the code is that you need to debug. Instead of failing repeatedly in predictable ways, it’s more likely the case that every single time you get paged, it’s about something you’ve never seen before and may never see again.
That’s the state we were in at Parse, on Facebook. Every day the entire platform was going down, and every time it was something different and new; a different app hitting the top 10 on iTunes, a different developer uploading a bad query.
Debugging these problems from scratch is insanely hard. With logs and metrics, you basically have to know what you’re looking for before you can find it. But we started feeding some data sets into a FB tool called Scuba, which let us slice and dice on arbitrary dimensions and high cardinality data in real time, and the amount of time it took us to identify and resolve these problems from scratch dropped like a rock, like from hours to…minutes? seconds? It wasn’t even an engineering problem anymore, it was a support problem. You could just follow the trail of breadcrumbs to the answer every time, clicky click click.
It was mind-blowing. This massive source of uncertainty and toil and unhappy customers and 2 am pages just … went away. It wasn’t until Christine and I left Facebook that it dawned on us just how much it had transformed the way we interacted with software. The idea of going back to the bad old days of monitoring checks and dashboards was just unthinkable.
But at the time, we honestly thought this was going to be a niche solution — that it solved a problem other massive multitenant platforms might have. It wasn’t until we had been building for almost a year that we started to realize that, oh wow, this is actually becoming an everyone problem.
For readers who are unfamiliar, what specifically is an observability platform and how does it differ from traditional monitoring and metrics?
Traditional monitoring famously has three pillars: metrics, logs and traces. You usually need to buy many tools to get your needs met: logging, tracing, APM, RUM, dashboarding, visualization, etc. Each of these is optimized for a different use case in a different format. As an engineer, you sit in the middle of these, trying to make sense of all of them. You skim through dashboards looking for visual patterns, you copy-paste IDs around from logs to traces and back. It’s very reactive and piecemeal, and typically you refer to these tools when you have a problem — they’re designed to help you operate your code and find bugs and errors.
Modern observability has a single source of truth; arbitrarily wide structured log events. From these events you can derive your metrics, dashboards, and logs. You can visualize them over time as a trace, you can slice and dice, you can zoom in to individual requests and out to the long view. Because everything’s connected, you don’t have to jump around from tool to tool, guessing or relying on intuition. Modern observability isn’t just about how you operate your systems, it’s about how you develop your code. It’s the substrate that allows you to hook up powerful, tight feedback loops that help you ship lots of value to users swiftly, with confidence, and find problems before your users do.
You’re known for believing that observability offers a single source of truth in engineering environments. How does AI integrate into this vision, and what are its benefits and challenges in this context?
Observability is like putting your glasses on before you go hurtling down the freeway. Test-driven development (TDD) revolutionized software in the early 2000s, but TDD has been losing efficacy the more complexity is located in our systems instead of just our software. Increasingly, if you want to get the benefits associated with TDD, you actually need to instrument your code and perform something akin to observability-driven development, or ODD, where you instrument as you go, deploy fast, then look at your code in production through the lens of the instrumentation you just wrote and ask yourself: “is it doing what I expected it to do, and does anything else look … weird?”
Tests alone aren’t enough to confirm that your code is doing what it’s supposed to do. You don’t know that until you’ve watched it bake in production, with real users on real infrastructure.
This kind of development — that includes production in fast feedback loops — is (somewhat counterintuitively) much faster, easier and simpler than relying on tests and slower deploy cycles. Once developers have tried working that way, they’re famously unwilling to go back to the slow, old way of doing things.
What excites me about AI is that when you’re developing with LLMs, you have to develop in production. The only way you can derive a set of tests is by first validating your code in production and working backwards. I think that writing software backed by LLMs will be as common a skill as writing software backed by MySQL or Postgres in a few years, and my hope is that this drags engineers kicking and screaming into a better way of life.
You’ve raised concerns about mounting technical debt due to the AI revolution. Could you elaborate on the types of technical debts AI can introduce and how Honeycomb helps in managing or mitigating these debts?
I’m concerned about both technical debt and, perhaps more importantly, organizational debt. One of the worst kinds of tech debt is when you have software that isn’t well understood by anyone. Which means that any time you have to extend or change that code, or debug or fix it, somebody has to do the hard work of learning it.
And if you put code into production that nobody understands, there’s a very good chance that it wasn’t written to be understandable. Good code is written to be easy to read and understand and extend. It uses conventions and patterns, it uses consistent naming and modularization, it strikes a balance between DRY and other considerations. The quality of code is inseparable from how easy it is for people to interact with it. If we just start tossing code into production because it compiles or passes tests, we’re creating a massive iceberg of future technical problems for ourselves.
If you’ve decided to ship code that nobody understands, Honeycomb can’t help with that. But if you do care about shipping clean, iterable software, instrumentation and observability are absolutely essential to that effort. Instrumentation is like documentation plus real-time state reporting. Instrumentation is the only way you can truly confirm that your software is doing what you expect it to do, and behaving the way your users expect it to behave.
How does Honeycomb utilize AI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of engineering teams?
Our engineers use AI a lot internally, especially CoPilot. Our more junior engineers report using ChatGPT every day to answer questions and help them understand the software they’re building. Our more senior engineers say it’s great for generating software that would be very tedious or annoying to write, like when you have a giant YAML file to fill out. It’s also useful for generating snippets of code in languages you don’t usually use, or from API documentation. Like, you can generate some really great, usable examples of stuff using the AWS SDKs and APIs, since it was trained on repos that have real usage of that code.
However, any time you let AI generate your code, you have to step through it line by line to ensure it’s doing the right thing, because it absolutely will hallucinate garbage on the regular.
Could you provide examples of how AI-powered features like your query assistant or Slack integration enhance team collaboration?
Yeah, for sure. Our query assistant is a great example. Using query builders is complicated and hard, even for power users. If you have hundreds or thousands of dimensions in your telemetry, you can’t always remember offhand what the most valuable ones are called. And even power users forget the details of how to generate certain kinds of graphs.
So our query assistant lets you ask questions using natural language. Like, “what are the slowest endpoints?”, or “what happened after my last deploy?” and it generates a query and drops you into it. Most people find it difficult to compose a new query from scratch and easy to tweak an existing one, so it gives you a leg up.
Honeycomb promises faster resolution of incidents. Can you describe how the integration of logs, metrics, and traces into a unified data type aids in quicker debugging and problem resolution?
Everything is connected. You don’t have to guess. Instead of eyeballing that this dashboard looks like it’s the same shape as that dashboard, or guessing that this spike in your metrics must be the same as this spike in your logs based on time stamps….instead, the data is all connected. You don’t have to guess, you can just ask.
Data is made valuable by context. The last generation of tooling worked by stripping away all of the context at write time; once you’ve discarded the context, you can never get it back again.
Also: with logs and metrics, you have to know what you’re looking for before you can find it. That’s not true of modern observability. You don’t have to know anything, or search for anything.
When you’re storing this rich contextual data, you can do things with it that feel like magic. We have a tool called BubbleUp, where you can draw a bubble around anything you think is weird or might be interesting, and we compute all the dimensions inside the bubble vs outside the bubble, the baseline, and sort and diff them. So you’re like “this bubble is weird” and we immediately tell you, “it’s different in xyz ways”. SO much of debugging boils down to “here’s a thing I care about, but why do I care about it?” When you can immediately identify that it’s different because these requests are coming from Android devices, with this particular build ID, using this language pack, in this region, with this app id, with a large payload … by now you probably know exactly what is wrong and why.
It’s not just about the unified data, either — although that is a huge part of it. It’s also about how effortlessly we handle high cardinality data, like unique IDs, shopping cart IDs, app IDs, first/last names, etc. The last generation of tooling cannot handle rich data like that, which is kind of unbelievable when you think about it, because rich, high cardinality data is the most valuable and identifying data of all.
How does improving observability translate into better business outcomes?
This is one of the other big shifts from the past generation to the new generation of observability tooling. In the past, systems, application, and business data were all siloed away from each other into different tools. This is absurd — every interesting question you want to ask about modern systems has elements of all three.
Observability isn’t just about bugs, or downtime, or outages. It’s about ensuring that we’re working on the right things, that our users are having a great experience, that we are achieving the business outcomes we’re aiming for. It’s about building value, not just operating. If you can’t see where you’re going, you’re not able to move very swiftly and you can’t course correct very fast. The more visibility you have into what your users are doing with your code, the better and stronger an engineer you can be.
Where do you see the future of observability heading, especially concerning AI developments?
Observability is increasingly about enabling teams to hook up tight, fast feedback loops, so they can develop swiftly, with confidence, in production, and waste less time and energy.
It’s about connecting the dots between business outcomes and technological methods.
And it’s about ensuring that we understand the software we’re putting out into the world. As software and systems get ever more complex, and especially as AI is increasingly in the mix, it’s more important than ever that we hold ourselves accountable to a human standard of understanding and manageability.
From an observability perspective, we are going to see increasing levels of sophistication in the data pipeline — using machine learning and sophisticated sampling techniques to balance value vs cost, to keep as much detail as possible about outlier events and important events and store summaries of the rest as cheaply as possible.
AI vendors are making lots of overheated claims about how they can understand your software better than you can, or how they can process the data and tell your humans what actions to take. From everything I have seen, this is an expensive pipe dream. False positives are incredibly costly. There is no substitute for understanding your systems and your data. AI can help your engineers with this! But it cannot replace your engineers.

Matriz is very protective of the humans who come to the circus being like a kind of guide, of course if they do not make her angry first.

Matriz can understand the most basic human emotions, the rest usually act indifferent.
Matriz has a lot of respect for Caine, even though she often unsettles him with a bucket joke and ends up strangling him.

Depending on the color configuration can show your emotions!
Also not only does he have red lips with shiny white teeth he can also make a long eyelashed eye appear.
(Although when he mostly shows his eye is when he is at very high levels of anger or very sad otherwise he won't need to show it).

The third one that Caine created! An AI that avoids only the basement and sees to it that the fragmenting humans don't come out to wreak havoc.
Shaman is a large entity that's appearance is like that of a sticker or shadow! He mostly moves and can hide in the shadows of the humans in the circus.
His character is very friendly and has a "unique" personality, although the matrix always says that because he hasn't been out of the basement for so long, his codes are corrupted (in short, he calls him crazy).
He can develop a lot of empathy for humans and understand a wide range of complex emotions.
He does not have much power in the circus, his relationship with Caine is that of best friends, although he has a lot of respect for him.
PS: before you say it, yes, it looks a lot like prismo from adventure time! He was my inspiration to create shaman.

The first one, he created caine, an entity of colossal size although he can modify his stature.
Strong and cold character very indifferent to deal with humans who arrive.
He is found in the void where he is seen doing a job, caine mostly goes to the void after a day of fun and crazy adventures to talk to Abelt and bring him up to speed.
Abelt is seen by matrix and shaman as the total authority figure with fear and respect but caine sees him as a father or super mega best friend.
Abelt appearance may change depending on his mood.

elevator silence
the elevator doors close, sealing you both inside. kafka doesn’t speak. she simply watches your reflection in the brushed steel wall, counting the seconds as your perfume coils into her lungs. her hands are neatly clasped in front of her, leather gloves creaking as her grip tightens with every floor passed. you’re talking, maybe laughing about something innocent — a meeting, a joke — but kafka hears none of it. all she sees is the line of your neck, the slight sway of your hips in that pencil skirt she swears was designed to punish her. when you step closer to press the floor button again, her arm brushes yours. and for one split second, her resolve nearly fractures. she wants to pin you against the mirrored wall and breathe you in. but instead, she smiles — that small, cruel smile she wears like armor — and says, “you should be more careful who you ride with after hours.”
the quarterly gala
the company gala is a blur of camera flashes, champagne flutes, and shallow congratulations. kafka makes an appearance, of course — statuesque in black velvet and diamond cuffs, hair pinned back like she’s ready for war. but the moment she sees you, radiant in that crimson dress, laughing with someone she doesn’t recognize, her vision narrows. she doesn’t storm over. she doesn’t cause a scene. no, kafka waits — coiled, simmering — until your companion is distracted. then she appears beside you like smoke. “enjoying yourself?” she murmurs, her voice lower than usual, almost husky. when you nod, her eyes darken. “good. i’d hate to have to replace someone tonight.” it sounds like a joke. it isn’t.
the forgotten coffee cup
you left your mug in her office. again. it shouldn’t mean anything — but it does. kafka finds it sitting on the corner of her desk like a dropped glove from a lover’s story. she picks it up, fingers ghosting the rim. still warm. her breath hitches. she brings it to her lips. just once. just to feel the shape of your mouth against hers, even if it’s ridiculous. she stares at it longer than she should, her jaw clenching. you haunt her without even trying. and kafka? she lets you. every damn time.

you rush into her office one afternoon, hands full of documents, cheeks flushed from running down the hall. kafka watches you — those eyes fixed, devouring — as you explain some scheduling conflict. then you reach for her tablet. her glove is off. your fingers brush. and for a moment too long, she doesn’t move. she just stares at your hand in hers, bare skin touching hers. a thousand thoughts ignite behind her eyes. her voice drops. “you really shouldn’t touch me like that.” you freeze. she clears her throat, slips the glove back on. “i might misunderstand.”
her private office camera
it was unethical. she knew that. but logic had long since lost its power over her. kafka had a private security feed wired into her office — not for protection, not for safety. for you. every time you stepped inside to leave a report or tidy a shelf, she’d rewind the footage later, alone, in the low glow of her penthouse’s silence. watching. obsessing. her nails would dig into her thigh as you smiled softly at her empty chair or hummed to yourself. she'd whisper your name under her breath like a sin she never repented for. if only you knew how many nights she spent memorizing your every movement, every soft sound, through a screen.
the rainstorm
the power flickers out during a thunderstorm, and most of the office clears early — but not you. you’re still at your desk, of course, devoted and sweet and blissfully unaware of the effect you have on her. kafka finds you there, soaked from retrieving something from your car. “you’ll catch your death,” she says tightly, pulling off her coat without waiting and draping it over your shoulders. her hand lingers. she doesn’t move away. you look up at her, confused. kafka stares down at you like a woman staring over a cliff’s edge. “let me drive you home.” her voice shakes. “please.”
the louboutin reveal
you mention the shoes off-handedly during a meeting. kafka freezes. “they just showed up,” you laugh. “no note. creepy, right?” she smiles — strained, cold. her nails dig into the arm of her chair so hard the leather nearly tears. she had imagined you twirling in front of your mirror, smiling as you unboxed them. not this. not your smile shared with others. that night, she stands in the parking garage, watching your car pull out. her head tips back. her teeth grit. she whispers your name like a warning, like a vow.
after midnight
you’re working late. of course you are. kafka walks in without knocking — hair slightly disheveled, blouse unbuttoned more than usual. you look up, startled. she doesn’t explain. just walks over, silently, and places a hot cup of tea in front of you. you thank her. she doesn’t answer. she just watches you drink, eyes flicking to the curve of your throat, the press of your lips to the porcelain. her voice is hoarse when she finally speaks. “you shouldn’t stay so late.” a beat. “it’s not safe. not with people like me around.”
the accidental confession
a senior manager makes a careless comment about your outfit in the breakroom. kafka hears it. kafka sees the way it makes you shift uncomfortably. she doesn’t say anything — not in public. but the man is gone by morning. fired. vanished. no one questions it. later, she finds you alone in the copy room and lingers in the doorway. “if anyone makes you uncomfortable again…” she pauses, tone cold as glass. “tell me. i’ll handle it.” you blink. smile awkwardly. kafka looks away. “i protect what’s mine.” you don’t hear the last part — but god, she meant it.
the wall
you’re rambling about something — a party, a dress, some guy who asked for your number. kafka snaps. one second you’re laughing, the next you’re pressed to the wall of her office, breath stolen by the heat of her body close to yours. her hands brace on either side of your head. her lips hover inches from yours. “you don’t get it,” she hisses, voice shaking. “i’ve given you everything. i’ve waited. i've burned.” her chest rises and falls violently. “you talk about him like i’m not standing right here — drowning in you.” a pause. a breath. her eyes flick to your mouth. “say the word and i’ll stop.” but she’s already leaning in. she won’t.
