Sketch of a typical Wardi house (small), located adjacent to farmland on the Briya river floodplain.
Most houses are made with mudbrick and with a smooth outer coating, sometimes plastered or otherwise decorated (this one has fairly minimal decorative painting). The climate is dry overall and mudbrick is the most economical and resistant building material available (though it does require more maintenance than in outright arid climates due to regular and sometimes very heavy winter rains), with the use of wood generally being reserved for maintaining the structural integrity of the roof and portals. These houses are fairly effective at insulation, and a well-constructed home will not have dramatic temperature gradients between hot days and cool nights.
Some homes lack doors altogether and use fabric or straw drapes; actual doors are hung by pintles and made with wood and/or woven reeds. Domestic chimneys have not been invented anywhere in general, and smoke in a small house like this will be removed (not the most efficiently) through small tubes in the walls and via the door/windows. Cooking hearths in these smaller houses are usually placed in the center of the building, which goes a little ways to allowing smoke to disperse.
Flat mudbrick roofs are in use in some places, though pointed thatched roofs like these are more common in all but the driest areas due to better shedding rainfall/occasional snow accumulation. Thatching is made with straw or papyrus, location depending, and can become very thick as a byproduct of routine maintenance on old houses.
Misc bits:
-bell windchimes on each side of the house (wards off ghosts and makes a pretty sound).
-little clay guardian lion over the doorway (most houses will have one on each side, though those not overseeing entrances may be hidden in the thatching or buried to fully embed their protective qualities).
-dung fuel being dried on one of the walls.
-koli plant right outside (easy low maintenance fruit and vegetables)

This drawing is set in the area he was born.#Was trying to look up like chimney makes from antiquity and it was like oh damn chimneys were not used in domestic settings#until maybe the 12th century CE huh. I have worse anachronisms in this 'most of the tech doesn't exceed anything found in the 1st#century BCE' setting than chimneys but I'm going with no chimneys#In general for now and in this part of the world at least.#That's kind of wild to think about though like I think I knew that at some point but never really processed it#There's ways to keep chimney-less houses from becoming smoke inhalation death traps when wood has to be continuously burnt#but still people were still jsut living in smoky as hell buildings for the bulk of architectural history#Also learned that thatched roofs are not as easily flammable as they look#which was helpful in solidifying this because I was weighing the tradeoffs between a flat mudbrick roof (nearly impervious to fire#but doesn't hold up well against rain and may collapse under snow (bad news in occasional very bad winters)) vs a thatched roof#(more flammable in a grassland environment where wildfires are a key part of the ecosystem and happen much more#regularly than blizzards)

Something something about Eddie learning Buck will be there for him off the job, even without Chris being in the equation.
Something something about that being an important realisation for him to finally make because he’s always hidden behind his son when it comes to Buck (and his love life more generally - even Shannon in reality was for Chris not himself) but he won’t be able to this time.
Something something about that realisation being the key to giving himself permission to examine his heart and feel his true feelings.

Hi!! I love this series so much, and as someone who hasn’t really drawn since they were a kid but wants to start as a hobby, do you have any advice for sort of learning to doodle on paper and get better at it? I want to start but I don’t really know how/where
The most important step in getting better at any skill is Persistence and Consistency. Practice and keep practicing! The best way to do that is to keep it fun! Picking a project helps generate ideas (e.g. drawing Pokémon, or characters from a series you like). There are also a ton of monthly prompt lists out there!
I also highly recommend scheduling in a 'drawing/practice' time in your day. For me, I started with 30-60 min before bed (bonus: its a good 'no screentime' activity), and the habit took root there.
There are a lot of 'technical' things to study but find the fun first. At a certain point you will discover you've hit a wall, and have a specific aspect/goal you want to target (colour theory, anatomy, lighting, comic layout). Then it's time to go looking for resources.
Once you have the habit and some goals, go collect some inspiration! Find people who inspire you and study their work!
Another little 'art skill builder' I recommend is the Shrimp Method! Only if you find technical challenges like this fun though (Example of one of my studies below)
#art faqs#TL;DR: Step 1 is 'Just start drawing'. Step 2 is 'Keep on drawing'. Step 3 is 'Hit a wall and start studying only as much as you want'#Step 4: keep it fun and keep drawing.#I think this is where artists who start young have the advantage over adult learners#because adults try to tackle art at the technical point first!#AND THAT JUST FEELS LIKE A CHORE!!#When I got into piano & string instruments I started by just doodling around. Banging out the tunes and experimenting.#The low pressure made it fun! I started lessons because I wanted to learn more!#I personally own quite a few art textbooks! Some are workbook/prompt-based (to help me get started)#and some are actual textbooks! But I certainly didn't start by reading a textbook.#I *highly* recommend Scott McCloud's 'understanding comics' for anyone trying to get into comics#its also a comic in of itself so its a fun read! It breaks down a lot of the key aspects of what's in a comic.#And tbh you don"t HAVE to trace for the shrimp method to work. Hmmmm reflection I think ultimately I still feel like my work and contributions/role as a member of the team was disrespected and especially my time and also very confused and tired by the shenanigans this project has been as well as generally prideful and also kind of scummy to have to go with an obviously terrible design using uncredited art but also the situation escalated because I wasn't careful enough in reading text messages and also because I should've been more aggressive and punctual with my own opinions and asking for clarification on things, as well as putting the foot down ahead of time and being clear on that. And also I was acting kind of spitefully at some points I think. And to speak up when I really want something and not mald quietly about it. I maintain that it's still a dick move to change it up like that so close to the deadline, even if they dropped it in the gc. Despite the existence of the gc it really doesn't feel like we are on the same page ever. And also it doesn't look like a lot of care was taken with the designs that they are so set on keeping which makes Me frustrated. Also I don't know why they are acting like a created a completely different game. The only thing different is the visual style all the content is exactly the same save for the edits I made because things were written badly and/or extraneous. And I left both versions sitting in the workspace anyways so you can SEE that. The latest texts I've been getting have just been incomprehensible in a way where I feel like I can't say anything without being too mean but I just like. What

I don't know if it was the audio quality or not but it's so hilarious that Eddie just goes BUCK in such a loud voice. It's giving me 'I'm so cool with my queer best friend I'm so supportive' 😭✋🏽.
