Interactive Text-Based Horror Story

Hello!!! I've decided to explore using Tumblr's poll feature to create an interactive text-based horror experience. The story will progress through daily posts containing short narrative paragraphs followed by a 24hr poll with 2-4 story options.

The story is called The Visitor and follows an unnamed main character as they wake up in a strange town with no recollection of how they arrived here and no obvious way to leave. Part One has just been posted, introducing you to the story and presenting you with your first decision to make.

What is this?

We post question prompts for talking about your original characters for the Fallen London universe. People can reply or reblog to answer the prompts for their characters, or check the notes to find out more about other people's characters.

The aim is to post two prompts per week. Each prompt post will contain multiple questions or concepts to discuss. You don't need to answer everything on the post if you don't want to - the various questions are intended to provoke thought for your answers, or give ways to elaborate in more detail.

Why QnA?

There are two main goals for the blog!

First: sharing OCs is a really fun part of the fandom, but posting information about your OCs, or introducing new characters, can be hard to do, especially for people new to the fandom. The posts here aim to serve as easy ways to talk about characters, without the pressure of deciding what to talk about or the anxiety of making your own posts for it.

Second: There's a lot of cool OCs in the fandom, and not nearly enough time to find them all and learn about them. The hope is that QnA posts will serve as a way to find new characters you didn't know about yet, or to learn more about the ones you already know.

How to join?

Easy! Just reply or reblog a QnA post with your response. You can also make a new post of your own if you want, though consider linking back to the prompt and/or tagging as "fallen london oc qna".

Responses can be handled however you want. Want to write them in character? Including art/picrew designs/moodboards/etc.? Just a simple bullet point list instead of full sentences? Go wild!

There are no skill requirements for responding. You don't need to respond to every post - feel free to skip any you don't feel like answering. There are also no time restrictions, so if you want to post 15 responses in a row 3 years late, you can do that.

General etiquette

As a general rule, be respectful and polite to other people. Do not be rude or antagonistic in the replies - take people's posts in good faith, or make use of the block function if necessary.

Be sure to credit and source things where relevant. If you post a Picrew image, share the link. If you include a commissioned piece of art, credit the artist. If you're posting a moodboard, take the time to check if the images are free to use. Don't use AI generated content.

In summary: be kind, be mature, and support your fellow creatives.

Other notes

We accept suggestions for future question prompts via asks. Any suggestions will include credit - include in the ask if you want credit anonymously or under a different username. Suggestions will likely be rephrased for consistency.

The plan is to post twice per week, but this may change in the future, depending on supply of questions, etc. The posting may also be inconsistent based on moderator health. Patience is appreciated!

Questions will be tagged for spoilers if directly relevant. If a spoiler tag is missed, send in an ask and it'll be fixed ASAP. Responses may (and most likely will) contain spoilers, so tread cautiously if you're avoiding those.

Hello! I was curious to see just how long we'll have to wait for Side Order, so I looked up the day that Spring 2024 starts (March 19th) and the day it ends (June 20th) for the very least and very most amount of days to wait for it. That's ignoring the possibility of delays, of course. This is how I will be calculating countdowns until we get a firm release date.

UPDATE: We got a firm release date!!! February 22nd, 2024!!

Scheduled countdowns should be posted at Noon; 12:30 PM EST, but may be posted at other times due to various circumstances (me forgetting or something like that.)

In the meantime, I'll reblog various theories, art posts, and news relating to Splatoon, especially Side Order. Gimmick Post Verification Status: UNIQUE (see below)

The gimmick blog @colortracker is a human-run blog that examines post contents, most often images but also other forms of visual content such as gifs and videos, and attempts to roughly quantify how many colors are present. According to the blog's pinned post, only the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and gray are counted. Each post receives a score out of 8, the score representing how many of the aforementioned colors are present in the content.

From observations, this blog seemingly builds controversy, intentionally or otherwise, due to the issue of color identification bias. This is a problem that effects several fields of research, study, software development, and even fashion design and marketing. Generally speaking, "objective" color identifications are bad. Human vision and perception is an extremely complicated topic, and humans don't visually process 100% of the information they are seeing, including color. Color is mostly an approximation, your brain kinda "guesses" what color is the "most" apparent or applicable in any instance. The first half of this video ("What Color Is My Hoodie?") by Tom Scott is a good launching point for understanding color perception.

The reason I am giving all of this context and information is to demonstrate that color is, objectively, subjective. "Objective" colors are less useful in practical fields than the general consensus (source is the same as in the first sourced statement). I cannot use a precise color code identifier to dispute this gimmick blog, because color is an example of qualia. I could easily squash and stretch any image, pick out individual pixels and especially use generation loss and compression (a whole other topic that also relates to this blog) to show "definitive" proof that, on my monitor, the "True Blue" theme of Tumblr contains bright red. Alternatively, I could link to an article from when "The Dress" was a meme.

Controversy relating to this blog's determinations & objective/subjective colors are also influenced by Alexis Spectral Data and the digital imaging concept of color management.

On a less subjective note, this particular post contains a formatting error, where two additional colors, likely yellow and purple, are counted in the score but not listed in the post content.

What is this blog?

Here at Hilson Fic Recs, we provide Hilson fics and tropes for easy fic-searching/finding! A list of tropes can be found in the Trope Masterlist or Tag Library. Tropes are sorted either by tags (and the trope link will take you to a tag search) or through compilation posts, where a list of fics matching that trope are provided in one convenient post.

What are fic posts vs compilation posts?

Fic posts are posts with one individual fic linked to where you can read the fic. It contains the basic information (title, author, word count, content rating), as well as the fic description and the tropes in the fic. The tropes are linked to their corresponding compilation post. Fic posts also provide information about the fic's warnings and trigger warnings. Compilation posts are a collection of fics that relate to one specific trope. The fics listed link back to the fic post, where you can read the description and find the fic link. The fics are listed in order of posting, so newer additions will be at the bottom of the list (so check back regularly for new fics!)

What are ratings? Are you rating the fics you rec?

The ratings are based on AO3's Content Ratings. G for General Audiences, T for Teen and Up Audiences, M for Mature, E for Explicit (typically contains sexual content), and NR for fics that are Not Rated. Content ratings are designated by the fic author, so we just pull the rating from the fic itself. So no, we're not rating fics.

What are warnings?

Warnings are based on AO3's Archive Content Warnings. The specific archive warnings are: Graphic Descriptions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con, and Underage Sex. Fics with one or more specific warning will be tagged accordingly. If an Author Chose Not to Use Warnings, the author chose not to warn for content but content warnings could still apply. No Warnings Apply means the fic was not marked with warnings. Make sure to check the fic's tags for more detailed warnings, if available. Content warnings are designated by the fic author, so we just pull the Archive Content Warnings from the fic itself.

How are your Trigger Warnings different from warnings?

We tag common trigger warnings ourselves, based on what we remember from the fic or from the fic tags. These trigger warnings do not include AO3's Archive Content Warnings, as those are already tagged in each fic post. We add our own trigger warning tags to include a wider range of trigger warnings. If we are missing a trigger warning, let us know! We try our best to tag appropriately, but it's always possible something will slip through the cracks. A list of specific tags is provided in the pinned post, so feel free to blacklist any tag as necessary.

Who runs this blog?

This was started by @reinanova (I'm doing most of the organization/linking between posts) and I've been joined by the lovely and amazing @bug-city who has been making the vast majority of fic posts!

Can I ask for a trope/submit a fic?

Yes absolutely! Asks and submissions are open! If you're submitting a fic, there are submission guidelines for how to format it. Asks with fic links are also welcome! We may make a new post for the linked fic and reply privately to let you know when we've added the fic to our queue! Or we will post the ask with links to the fic and/or create the fic post from that ask. Alternatively, you can comment/reblog a compilation post with a fic link and we'll add the fic as soon as we are able!

Can I submit my own fic?

Absolutely!

What does "under construction" mean on posts?

I started this blog on 9 Feb 2025, and as such, am still in the process of getting links/compilation posts and the blog in general set up. Compilation posts with only a few fics linked will have the "under construction" note as a way to signal that more fics will be added eventually! This way, I can get the post link to the compilation post and add it to the masterlist post, so I have less work to do later. Even after the "under construction" note has been removed, more fics will continue to be added, so check back regularly for more fics in the compilation posts!

How does the timeline tagging work?

If the fic takes place during a specific season, it will get that season's tag. Same thing with pre and post-canon fics. If the timeline in the fic is vague or unspecified, but is set within a specific era (ie an unspecified timeline with the OG Ducklings), it will get that era trope instead of a tag. If a fic spans multiple seasons/eras, it gets the Broad/Vague Timeline trope. Compilation posts for the timeline eras will also have links to the season tag searches they correspond to. Basically, a fic will get either a season tag or an era trope link (or both in rare cases). Timeline eras include: OG Ducklings and Ducklings 2.0

Is there a difference between the Trope Masterlist and Tag Library?

They should both have the same links to tag searches and compilation posts! The only real difference is layout and device compatability: the tag library generally works best on the Tumblr website, but the trope masterlist post is more universal. Lesson 9: Appropriately Tagging Your Posts.

Tagging your posts is important for a number of reasons. Not only can it help to locate certain posts under a given category (for example, the tags linked in my pinned post for easy access), but they also protect users from seeing things that can potentially be upsetting to them or spur a trauma response.

Situations like this are known as trigger tagging or trigger warnings. (See also: content warnings)

Most of these are common phobias or generally uncomfortable subjects such as pet death, eye trauma, spiders, and more.

If someone asks you to tag something, please do it.

It doesn't matter what it is. It can seem silly for someone to tag #white tigers or #roses, but in the longrun, it's easier to accommodate than argue if it's only a few posts. If your blog primarily focuses on those triggers, you may politely inform them that with the amount of posts containing that tag, it may just be better to unfollow.

You do not have to be rude. It is always much easier to be kind and people will appreciate and respect you for it.

Some people tag their posts as #[item] cw, while others may do #[item] tw, which is what I personally do. Others just do #[item]. Really, as long as you do one of these three, you're probably fine. Those are very common and easy to filter out.
