things about kanade I would like to see explored

- it was mentioned before that she had an established friend group before the switch to homeschool and it seems that the switch was sudden. there's no indication that she still talks to them and it's safe to assume they've fallen out. did they try to reach out to her? did she cut them off? does she still remember them as individuals? despite kanade having a lot of backstory events, her middle school years still don't have a lot of information to them. it would be interesting to have an event where she reunites with one of her old friends to discuss how each of them felt about the falling off

- in relation to middle school, it's established that Kanade's switch to homeschool was a decision she made herself to focus on composing which her grandma was against. it would be interesting to explore kanade’s process in making that decision, she looks back on her life back then with fondness so it probably wasn't an easy decision to leave her friends and social life behind. how much of a toll did that take on her? was the switch easy? did she find herself missing her previous life but forced herself to repress that?

- kanade lived 2 years of her life indoors shutting herself away from family and friends alike, the only human contact she probably had in time span was her visits to the hospital. loneliness takes a bigger toll on people that a lot realize so it's impressive that kanade was able to survive with that life span for as long as she did. does she regret it, wasting away 2 years of her youth for the sake of overworking towards an impossible goal all for it to be for nothing? there's no way she doesn’t but she probably doesn't consciously realize it

- kanadad come back, but don't just have him come back. explore his relationship with kanade and how its changed after the incident because there's no way their relationship would stay the same way it used to be. I made a post about this a while back but I want an event where kanade reflects on her who father was without the rose colored glasses view of him she used to have, explore his mental state and the bad habits he exhibited prior to his hospitalization and how they mirror hers. put an emphasis to her collapsing incident in kana5 where it hits her just how severe it was, how similar she was to her father to the point of almost ending up like him. having a more objective view of who her dad was would change the trajectory of their relationship because all her life, kanade’s dad could do no wrong in her eyes and for the longest time that's what she believed so this revelation has her rethinking everything she ever knew. if kanadad were to come back it would be interesting to see how this revelation changes the way she interacts with him

- it's probably too late for kanade to transfer to public high-school now but it would be interesting to have her go to in-person university which will give her the chance to regularly interact with people outside of niigo which she doesn't do often, being in university would force her to leave the house and get out of her comfort zone full time and in turn making more close friendships. if we were to explore her potential feeling of regret in regards to spending her middle school years alone, this would be a good way to end that conflict. she can't take back the years she spend rotting away but it's not too late for her to live the life she was supposed to have surrounded by friends, she can stop lamenting on what her past life should've been and instead focus on making her current life one worth living

- in mafu6 it's confirmed that the room mafuyu is staying in was actually kanamom's room and not kanade’s which would mean kanade’s old room has yet to be revealed. I'm curious to see what it looked like before she left. it was mentioned that kanade was a mischievous kid and paired with her more lively personality prior to what happened with her dad, kanade was far more lively when she was younger compared to how she is now which is obviously seen in her behavior but I wonder if it reflected in her room and how she decorated it because there's no way she didn't given how much more cheerful she used to be. did she ever take them down? how much of her stuff did she leave behind? probably a lot given how her dad's room looks exactly the same as it was before she moved in so if she had trinkets or plushies in her old room she didn't bother bringing them to her new one. if this was the case it would serve as symbolism of the way kanade slowly steered away from the cheerful lively person she once was to becoming like her father in all the wrong ways; a husk of a person who works tirelessly creating music not for themselves, but for others. even just seeing a contrast between her childhood room and her current one would be enough to display the effects her trauma had on her and how it drained every ounce of life after her

with my post-ena5 understanding of mizuki's character, i've tried reexamining her key moments through that lens. that's what led me to the questions i'll try to answer here: what was mizuki feeling during the rooftop scene (the original one) and did ena's declaration there actually do her more harm than good?

the reason the rooftop scene is so important is because it changes mizuki's motivation. she infamously says "i lied to her," but it doesn't end up being a lie. all the way through this event, her goal was still to keep her secret under wraps. but from this point forward, her goal is to find the courage to share her secret.

it's comparable to how ena's motivation switches from seeking validation to seeking self improvement thanks to kanade's kind gesture in insatiable pale color. in that case, it's clearly a good thing: one need was met so she could focus on another further up maslow's hierarchy. mizuki's situation, unfortunately, is more complicated.

to explain why, we need to address mizuki's defining internal conflict. her desire for meaningful lasting connection is at war with her self-loathing and guilt. so when ena says she'll wait forever, part of mizuki is elated. as she almost admitted out loud, she wants to keep seeing the cherry blossoms together with n25.

at the end of secret distance, having accepted that n25 is important to her, mizuki was faced with a choice. she could either have genuine friendship, or she could keep her secret. once we get to footprints, it's clear she's chosen the latter. that's why her first shock in the scene comes when ena calls her a "friend." whether or not she thinks she deserves it, and despite her best attempts to sabotage its formation, the friendship exists. and the others are trying to make it last.

but mizuki pushes back. she insists ena can't really mean forever, she warns her it could be a really long time. implicitly, she's trying to tell her "i'm not worth it." this is the ugly side of the rooftop scene. because now that ena has made her dedication so clear, there's no way for mizuki to escape her guilt.

so what's the point? aside from making us all cry, what did this scene accomplish?

well, i've hinted at it already, but this the scene that makes mizuki realize, "i want to tell her. i have to tell her." sure, for a moment, it crosses her mind that ena would stay her friend forever if she simply didn't tell her, but even the thought makes her feel like an awful person. continuing on like that was never really an option. even if she doesn't know it by the end of the scene, she now has the motivation and will someday have the courage to move forward.

before this, she saw ena more the way mafuyu sees shizuku or others from school: she'll never really know me because i don't let the mask slip in front of her. afterwards, she sees her the way mafuyu sees kanade: she's trying for me, so i have to try too.

of course, she's still delaying and deflecting out of a desire to keep things the same, but one way or another, the "distance" arc is over. it's a gradual process from here, but as we see in world link and in mafu5, she really is trying.

in the grand scheme of things, i have to argue that ena's declaration had a net positive effect. mizuki's chronic nemesis is stagnation. painful or not, the rooftop scene forces her to make an effort to change. without it, she never would have found the genuine, trusting connections and unconditional love she now knows she has.
