Honestly I don’t think it’s fair to compare a strange and stubborn endurance to the captive prince trilogy but I couldn’t help it.

I was trying to figure out why the captive prince trilogy works while asase doesn’t and I think it’s precisely because the author for captive prince doesn’t try to make their queer-normative society a utopia. There are still horrible issues with both societies. They just happen to be queer normative; it’s just an aspect of their societies and not something that makes them morally good. There’s still aspects like class and gender that play a huge part in both societies. I think the biggest issue I had with asase was that any sense of immortality or evilness was very much more from a few bad apples than any systemic issue that people were navigating in their respective societies. The biggest problem in asase was that two people wanted the same heir and just never told that person so they acted out. Rape is the product of one bad apple than a problem with power and dominance in a homophobic society. It’s hinted at a bit with Vel comparing himself to a bride and the fact that he sees himself in more of a feminine role. But Vel barely seems like a member of his own society.

And when Vel and Cae meet, they just instantly get along and like one another. Their relationship never felt earned or even to grow. There’s no misunderstandings or even insults. They both act as if they are from the same society. I kept comparing them to Damen and Laurent. Even when Damen and Laurent are together, they are still people with conflicting goals, wants, and needs. Now I just feel like I need to reread the captive prince series.
