A few weeks ago, I shared with you a childhood anecdote to illustrate how heteronormativity and conformity subtly influence us from a very young age and how this dynamic shapes our beloved characters in Stranger Things, set in a rural American town in the 1980s. I demonstrated that despite the progress and shifts in mentality between the 1980s and 2007 (the year of my anecdote), stereotypes and preconceived notions still persist, whether we like it or not.

Well, let me share with you another recent anecdote that further confirms this observation.

For context, I work as an ATSEM (Agent Territorial Spécialisé des Écoles Maternelles, as it's called in France) in a preschool (it's the equivalent of "Nursery assistant" or/and "preschool teaching assistant"). Since I’m currently part of the city's substitute pool, I also work in daycare centers (with babies as young as six months up to toddlers of three years old), but mainly in preschools (with children aged three to six). And let me tell you, despite all our efforts to avoid gender stereotypes, many of my youngest students already mimic what they see at home or on TV when interacting with their peers.

I've seen children trying to kiss their friends—or even adults—on the lips, simply imitating “Mommy and Daddy.” Keep in mind, these kids are only three or four years old. This means that the seeds of heteronormativity have already been planted in 2025, despite all our efforts to shield them from stereotypes.

I can’t count how many times I’ve had to remind them that pink isn’t just for girls, or that kissing someone on the lips isn’t appropriate—that only adults can do that with each other, and that no adult should ever kiss them on the mouth. And the worst part? It’s not their fault. The adults around them—especially their parents and family members—are their role models, their pillars, the ones they trust most. To them, adults are inherently right because adults know everything. And in a way, that makes sense—children know nothing about the world yet; they are in the process of learning absolutely everything.

This also reminds me of another childhood memory from a summer camping trip. I must have been six or seven years old, playing in the park with a little girl I had just met. I remember initiating a game where we pretended to be in love, and I kissed her on the lips. I was merely copying what I saw around me—adults in love, scenes on TV, music videos, etc. (Looking back, I also think I was unconsciously influenced by the abuse I endured at that age without fully realizing it. I distinctly remember feeling a strange pressure, a need to keep it secret, as if I had done something wrong. That feeling intensified in my mind, making me believe I had misbehaved. In hindsight, I suspect that, on some level, I was reenacting what a certain bastard had done to me, though everything blurred together in my head anyway.)

These memories resurfaced, making me realize just how deeply ingrained these patterns are—whether in 1983, 2007, or 2025. No matter how much progress we make, no matter how open-minded society becomes, heteronormativity is still here. And it still reigns.

Tu as pris, petite, des fessées sur les genoux de tes parents, et tu as intégré que, quand on fait une bêtise, on reçoit une fessée, tu en as donné quelques-unes comme baby-sitter, et les parents ont trouvé ça très bien, alors, animatrice en classe de découverte, tu as un soir allongé sur tes genoux un gamin qui ne voulait pas aller se coucher, tu lui as baissé le pyjama et donné une fessée devant tous ses copains, il n'a rien dit à la maîtresse, mais il a tout raconté en rentrant à ses parents, qui ont fait un scandale, et son papa a décidé que tu devais être punie pour ce que tu avais fait subir à son fils ; il y a du coup quinze, vingt, trente personnes, à la mairie et à l'école, qui savent que tu as tout à l'heure rendez-vous chez eux pour qu'il puisse t'administrer sur ses genoux, sous le nez de son fils, une bonne fessée déculottée, tu te doutes - bonjour la réputation - qu'au centre aéré et à la cantine où tu travailles, ça va être compliqué à gérer (il y a déjà une ATSEM qui ce midi t'a menacée avec un grand sourire : moi aussi, je peux donner une fessée déculottée, Chloé, fais attention à toi ! ! je peux facilement changer la couleur de ton petit derrière !) ...

Dossiers, Enquêtes : Sciences de l’éducation (2017-2018)

Innocent Games, Invisible Scripts: Watching Heteronormativity at Play

Last January, I wrote a post on Tumblr titled "The influence of conformity & gender stereotypes on the characters of Stranger Things but also on US (the general audience)" — a post that many of you appreciated, and for that, I sincerely thank you. In it, I shared an anecdote from my childhood that perfectly illustrated how the impact of heteronormativity reaches us from a very young age.

And last Friday, at work, I found myself in a situation that once again made me realize just how pervasive heteronormativity is — how it lingers everywhere, haunting us even when we think we’ve deconstructed it.

To give you some context: I work as an ATSEM (a kind of teaching assistant) in a preschool class for 3- to 4-year-olds. I assist the teacher during class and help with educational activities, but I also care for the children during out-of-class times — lunchtime, naptime, and after school. I also clean the classroom once the students have left, and so on.

So last Friday around 5 p.m., while I was cleaning, I walked past the after-school care room, which is right next to my classroom. There, I saw one of my students giving a big hug to a little girl from another class, and they were holding hands. I found the scene really cute and sweet — but immediately, and without thinking, I instinctively interpreted it as a sort of "romantic" gesture between them.

And before I could even say anything, one of the after-school staff members standing next to me said, “Oh yeah, Noé and the little girl (I don’t remember her name) have been in love for a few days now. Before that, she was with Gabriel (another boy from the class), haha!” she added with a tone of amusement and lightheartedness.

I replied sarcastically, laughing, as I noticed Gabriel standing just behind them, completely unbothered: “Well, looks like he’s not holding a grudge, haha.”

But later, as I reflected on that moment, I started wondering… Was what happened truly innocent — just us responding to children mimicking adult behaviors in an innocent way? Or were we, in fact, feeding heteronormativity into them even more?

Because when a student tells me, “I’m in love with a friend,” whether it’s a boy saying it about another boy, or a girl about another girl, I never respond with, “Oh no, you can’t be, because you’re both boys/girls.” Instead, I just validate the feeling by saying something like, “Well, as long as both of you are happy and agree, that’s great!”

Because, at the end of the day, they’re just kids imitating what they see around them — they don’t yet distinguish between friendship, romantic love, familial bonds, or the care and affection they receive from the adults at school.

How many times have they told me they love me? It happens often — because I am a figure of attachment and trust they see every day, all week long, for an entire school year. I’m the one who keeps them physically and emotionally safe when mom and dad aren’t there. Of course they love me. Of course they trust me completely.

But this whole situation made me ask myself a real, important question: How can we avoid complicating things in a child’s mind — especially when they’re not yet asking themselves these kinds of questions — while also not letting them be silently shaped by heteronormative assumptions?

What should we do in those moments?
