HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOB DYLAN—What a milestone for a cultural figure who enlivened the soundtrack of a generation, stirred up the world and the Spirit, and is still cranking out masterworks. I can’t compete with the surfeit of well-written Bob-fest birthday tributes going out today, but I did find this cover of “It Takes a Lot to Laugh It Takes a Train to Cry.” It was a rehearsal take with The Rover Boys, sung by the band’s house Dylanologist Adam Savetsky. We wanted to take it into a Creedence-zone and we had fun trying…Meanwhile, HB Bob and thank you for your volumes of words and music.

Hundreds of Jewish New Yorkers gathered amid beautifully decorated Christmas trees at Gracie Mansion, Mayor Eric Adams’ residence, for a pre-Hanukkah celebration feting several local Jews and charities.
In prepared remarks, the new Jewish commissioner of the NYPD, Jessica Tisch — whose introduction was met with applause by the packed room — referenced the Hanukkah story, calling Adams — who earlier that day lost a bid to reduce the number of charges he faces as part of a federal corruption indictment — “a light in our community.”
Those receiving awards, honors and citations included Lizzy Savetsky, an Orthodox Jewish influencer in Manhattan known for her pro-Israel content, and four Jewish college students from across the city recognized for their work fighting antisemitism and amplifying Jewish pride on their campuses — Tali Dardashti from New York University, Danielle Babaev from Queens College, Maya Gavriel from Baruch College and Noam Woldenberg from Columbia University.
Guests — including actor and pro-Israel influencer Zach Sage Fox, CEO of UJA-Federation Eric Goldstein and Israeli Consul General in New York Ofir Akunis — circulated from room to room, with many opting to enjoy the unseasonably warm December temperatures on the patio. Richie Taylor, the barrier-breaking Orthodox NYPD deputy chief, was among many uniformed police offers at the event.
On the menu? A smorgasbord of Hanukkah fare and kosher bites which, several signs noted, came courtesy of the Mendy’s outpost at the Jewish Children’s Museum. The spread included latkes with applesauce and sufganiyot, beef lo mein, and chicken shawarma. The wines were Israeli, and assorted flavors of seltzer were also on offer.
A mayoral Hanukkah party is an annual tradition that dates back to Michael Bloomberg’s administration — he put on swanky affairs typically held at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. But Bloomberg was hardly the first New York City mayor to celebrate the Festival of Lights: During David Dinkins’ administration in the early 1990s, there was a menorah lighting ceremony that took place on the steps of City Hall with a cantor, a rabbi, and students from a Jewish school singing together.
In his brief remarks to the crowded ballroom — where many guests shushed their talkative neighbors in order to hear above the din — Adams recalled his visits to Krakow and Rome’s Jewish ghetto. Saying that hatred cannot simply be willed away, he said that as mayor of the city with the largest population of Jews, he and his administration are going “to do [their] part” to fight antisemitism.
“We’re committed to rid our city of any form of hate, antisemitism, hate against Sikhs, hate against African Americans, Islamophobia — hate against any other group,” Adams said.
“We will stand tall together,” he continued. “I want to be extremely clear on this Hanukkah: Eric Leroy Adams is a modern-day Maccabee.”
Other honorees of the evening included Rabbi Boruch Ber Bender from the Achiezer Community Resource Center, which deals with crisis management; Achim B’Yachad, which provides the services of Chai Lifeline for Hasidic families dealing with serious illness or loss; and Chazaq, which seeks to provide Jewish education to Jews of all ages.

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Pipe of Peace, A Chippewa Song” live band rehearsal (lo-fi recording): https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/pipe-of-peace-a-chippewa-indian-song-rehearsal-3-90-remastered-2023
Flames are glowing bright, brother
Sit with me tonight, brother
Come let us join together smoke the sacred pipe of peace
Set aside our differences, brother
Put away our war dances, brother
Come let us join together smoke the sacred pipe of peace
I discovered this song in an antique songbook for school children—a universal message from a childlike heart, a simple and timeless plea to rise above tribalism and killing. I retrofitted the lyrics so my then-band The Rover Boys would have songs that were easy to rock out in concert. This take was from a rehearsal w/Bennett Green (drums) and Adam Savetsky (bass). Normally I don’t like to use lo-fi recordings for public posts, but in regards to current events, I’m sharing it as an urgent prayer. https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/pipe-of-peace-a-chippewa-indian-song-rehearsal-3-90-remastered-2023

SONG OF THE WEEK “We Go All Together Now” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/we-go-all-together-now-demo-remastered-2020  ...“A singing voice in a world gone blind”—This song came to me fast!—A straight-from-the-soul idea that may have been inspired by photos from the Civil Rights Movement, or maybe “visions of Heaven” where friends and enemies, lovers and ex-lovers, come together and forget their differences. At the time I was having a case of “home demo madness,” and my friend Adam Savetsky loaned me his Rickenbacker 360 guitar and I rush-recorded tracks with it before it had to go back. I forgot about this 4-track demo for years and recently revived it. Musically it’s inspired by The Beatles and King Crimson, with a guitar part imagining John Lennon if he took lessons from Robert Fripp...

SONG OF THE WEEK: “The Brakeman’s Dead”  http://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/the-brakemans-dead-early-mix  —It was during a live show with The Rover Boys that these chords and lyrics suddenly burst out of my head, each verse beginning with the line “Maybe about this time next year…” I sang whatever flew into my head, with vocabulary from Biblical apocalpyse themes + current events + runaway trains as the Rovers kept up. I did this freeform tune a few more times and it hit with people. So I took it to Tom Mallon’s recording studio in San Francisco (with the late Aaron Gregory at the board), cutting it live without a lyric sheet. I thrashed an acoustic guitar through a stack of Marshalls (ala The Alarm) with Bennett Green and John Stuart on drums (separate sessions), and Adam Savetsky on bass. Later I asked Michael Miller and Chris von Sneidern to add guitar touches in one take John Cage-style without letting them hear what the other guy was doing. Last I sweetened it with percussion (bottles & junk) and violin. On a cosmic jukebox it would play next to Neil Young & Crazy Horse at their most raucous. Download here: http://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/the-brakemans-dead-early-mix

FRIDAY FLASHBACK “We Go All Together Now” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/we-go-all-together-now-demo-remastered-2020
…Today the Flashback Machine flies the Rickenbacker name, prompted by today being the birthday of Eddie Richkenbacker, the heroic World War I flying ace, race car driver, and pioneer in air transporation (among other things). His cousin was Adolph Rickenbacker, founder of Rickenbacker Guitar Company (in California) and co-creator of the electric guitar (he was also an advocate of the left-handed guitar). His brand took flight in the 60s and 70s when bands such as The Beatles and Yes prominently used Rickenbacker products. In the 90s my friend Adam Savetsky loaned me his Rickenbacker 360 guitar and I rush-recorded tracks with it before it had to go back. Here’s “We Go All Together Now,” a home demo from that rush. Meanwhile, Happy Birthday Eddie and thanks to the Rickenbacker family…

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: SAN FRANCISCO SUSPENSION BRITCHES https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/album/san-francisco-suspension-britches-audio-diary-entries-1990-95  —An “audio diary” of recordings, demos, and rehearsals mainly from San Francisco locales (including the hallowed Tom Mallon Studios)—a collection of high-energy originals + fun covers of songs by Bruce Cockburn, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, + a “Dirty Harry” remake of Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair).” I was blessed by a fabulous cache of musicians, many of whom joined me on Bay Area stages as The Rover Boys, performing daring and entertaining shows in a “revolving door” of  bike messengers + musicians from the L.A. metal band Soldier, and the (now legendary) confessional power pop band Flying Color. Remarkable artist and singer-songwriter Michael Miller (ex of Exit Records) contributed guitar and poster art. Bassist Adam Savetsky (of The McGuires) and rock-steady drummer Bennett Green anchored the rotation. The “male model” on the cover art (seen on the album cover link) was drawn by the great artist Joe Sloan, frontman for the band Spot 1019. I’m grateful to have worked with these talents. Give a listen:
