I call this collection The Debuts That Should Have Done Better Because They're Great
THE DYING SQUAD is a dark horror crime novel when the ghost of a former detective is set on the case to solve his own murder.
THE COLLARBOUND is a phenomenal epic fantasy with a unique magic system, dealing with identity, race, rebellion and religion.
SHADOWS OF THE SHORT DAYS is a dark Icelandic fantasy, dark academia, rebellion, magic mushrooms but not in a fun way, demons and dark gods.
I've been assigned to go through some archive boxes in our basement, and after a brief soujourn in the WRONG basement (apparently we go down to -3!)

I have now found our archive boxes and now this is where I live

The Dying Squad by Adam Simcox (book review).
The Dying Squad by Adam Simcox (book review).
‘The Dying Squad’ is Adam Simcox’s debut novel. It’s far from being his first work of creative fiction though. Simcox is a British filmmaker whose first feature sold to Netflix, while his next two won awards. So I had high expectations when I started reading the book. I’m glad to say, those expectations were exceeded by quite some margin. The story starts out with the gritty realism of a…

With a best friend like Shawn Spencer, it’s surprisingly easy to be at risk, sometimes multiple times in one day. When Gus was younger, he nearly got away from Shawn thanks to schooling and his parents interference, but when Shawn helped the Guster family, Gus’ parents backed down. Years, and a sham marriage passed, Gus was living his best life as a pharmaceutical sales rep, making 48k a year. He was where he belonged. With a best friend like Shawn Spencer, it’s surprisingly easy to have one’s life plans go awry. Gus still worked as a pharm. sales rep, but too often, he ended up being the getaway driver in the police cases Shawn managed to worm them both into. As the years passed, Gus still complained about it but when the chance came to go back to his comfortable career and say goodbye to his best friend, Gus chose to say goodbye to the comfortable life, knowing it wouldn’t be the same if he was on his own.

GREATEST STRENGTH: His friendship with Shawn.
GREATEST WEAKNESS/FLAW: His friendship with Shawn.
OUTFIT THEY WOKE UP IN: Pinstripe button down shirt, tan slacks, dress shoes.
FAVORITE FOOD: A poached egg with hollandaise sauce on an English muffin.
ONE FEAR: The “head peel.” (It’s his fourth greatest fear.)
ONE HOPE: To survive the strangest case he’s ever been on and to really let Shawn have a piece of Gus’ mind if they ever see each other again.
ONE HEADCANON: Gus won’t go anywhere without The Blueberry to the point of clinging onto it with all his might until he at least gets to have his trusty car with him.
THE QUESTIONNAIRE;
How does your character feel about being dropped into the expanse program? Are they excited? Suspicious? Confused? -- Suspicious as heck. He’s still convinced this entire thing is an elaborate escape room Shawn’s cooked up for him.
What does your character hope to see the most during the expanse 009’s journey? -- Home.
If your character could bring one thing from home, what would it be? -- While it’s not exactly how he remembers it, he has his Blueberry so he doesn’t need anything else.

“Grease” show #807
Perhaps when Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey wrote Grease in the 1970’s, they anticipated a change in high school norms and dynamics of the teenage psyche. However, they still have a rock n’ roll musical which resonates with older crowds and accurately portrays the issues high schoolers in 2019 care about: being liked, fitting in, having friends, rivalries, love, sex, and being cool. Adam Estes has directed and choreographed a fantastic production of Grease, giving each actor their time to shine and each production number its rightful time to shimmer. Grease is most certainly the word over at Sierra Repertory Theatre!
(Kyle Thomas Mangold (Danny) and Alison Bagli (Sandy); Photo credit: Jerry Lee)
Kyle Thomas Mangold and Alison Bagli lead this incredibly talented cast as Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, respectively. Mr. Mangold doubles down on portraying his Zuko as a complete goofball who, at every chance he gets, tries to be tough and cool in front of his fellow Burger Palace Boys (aka, the T-Birds for those who only know the film). But his smooth tenor and Elvis-timbre in “Summer Nights” and “Sandy” show just how legit he is. Ms. Bagli gives as much depth to Sandy, the ingénue with not much to do, as an actress can. Ms. Bagli’s dynamite vocals fill the Fallon House theater in “Summer Nights” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” Her melancholy lament, “It’s Raining on Prom Night” along with Barbara Camara’s Radio Voice vocals, allow the audience to see Ms. Bagli’s range of emotion as she garners the guff to go to the dance and pursue her love for Danny. The two partner up for a killer turn at “You’re the One That I Want,” complete with rockin’ vocals and snazzy chemistry.
(Jonathan Chisolm (Roger) and Liz Eradi (Jan); Photo credit: Jerry Lee)
The supporting Burger Palace Boys and Pink Ladies all do very well in their singular moments to take stage. Nick Abbott is a smooth swaggering, too-cool-for-school Kenickie who leads “Greased Lightin’” with a healthy dose of gravitas. Julia Adams has a character voice to her Frenchy that makes every line a delectable comedic turn, and she does well within the sterling vocals and performance of Spencer Glass’ (Teen Angel/Vince Fontaine) soulful turn at “Beauty School Dropout.” Liz Eradi, as Jan, and Jonathan Chisolm, as Roger, partner for a beautifully humorous duet in “Mooning,” a song which showcases both performers’ gorgeous voices and comedic chops. Stephen Markarian, as Doody, delivers a show-stopping turn at “Those Magic Changes,” his guitar lesson-turned-rock show solo that encapsulates much more of Doody’s internal monologue than the rest of the show allows. Dionna Eshleman’s turn as Marty is highlighted very well in her dancing and vocals, the latter primarily in her femme-crooner performance in “Freddy, My Love,” a solo that really does color the otherwise make out-loving high schooler with a lovely depth of personality and caring.
(Emily Rose Lyons (Rizzo); Photo credit: Jerry Lee)
Emily Rose Lyons is a standout as Betty Rizzo, the only character with a true journey worth following. Ms. Lyons’ cutesy vocals in “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” make for a fun little romp. However, in her act two turn of “There Are Worse Things I Could Do,” the audience is silent with awe at how much vulnerability and storytelling Ms. Lyons gives to the devastating solo. Featured standouts are well-received by Kyle Moses’ nerdy-and-loveable Eugene, Betsy Moses’ commanding and animated Miss Lynch, and Shannon Gerrity’s peppy-yet-sassy Patty Simcox.
(L to R: Kyle Moses (Eugene), Betsy Moses (Miss Lynch), Shannon Gerrity (Patty Simcox); Photo credit: Jerry Lee)
Mr. Estes has found a great balance between staging and dancing in each numbers, and much to his advantage since most of the principals have their own big song. Some, like “Greased Lightnin’” and “You’re the One That I Want,” have more “showy” movement and technical fun rather than legit dancing. But never fear, for when “Born to Hand Jive” starts, the lifts and partner dancing is exuberant, highlighted by a phenomenal Ms. Camara doubling as Cha-Cha Degregorio. Mr. Estes’ direction blows over the near-unforgivable camp the book has in it, while giving due diligence to the key lines and big numbers, allowing them to take focus. Diana Newington and Anna Owen’s costumes are stellar, period-perfect and characteristically intact with each role. Grease is a show that is certainly oft-done but not oft-done well. You can be sure that if you choose to head back to Rydell High by way of Sierra Repertory Theatre, you are in sure fire hands to be entertained. Do go see Grease, you don’t wanna miss it!

Fifty former South African black cricketers have alleged that racial discrimination is rampant in South African cricket, which they have experienced at various stages. A statement issued by senior fast bowlers Makhay Antini, Veron Philander, Ashley Prince, Duminy, Paul Adams and others said that South African cricket was divided along ethnic lines.
Incumbent South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi also appealed to the South African Cricket Board to come forward in support of the Black Leaves Matters movement.
"Three decades have passed since the unification of cricket, yet racial discrimination is still a part of our lives," the players wrote. This situation is an opportunity for the South African board to come forward in our support. We also appeal to our fellow white cricketers to come forward in support of this movement.
Some South African cricketers did not like NGD's support for the Black Leaves Matters and its appeal to the South African Board. He was criticized by Pat Simcox, Boyeta Dippenar, Rudy Stan and Brian McMill.
