That is, under ideal conditions—there’s no reason I shouldn’t—but I’m always afraid of tempting fate and, like, causing the entire state of Alabama to sink into the sea.
The idea is that it’s actual video gameplay with voice commentary, not just my janky Voice Memo audio from the early days, but it’ll also come with a writeup/summary of what I’m discussing, sources, links, other videos I watched, and so on. first of all im losing my SHIT over "my lego in fsm" I might actually pass away
Second: I've debated it. I think it's really hypocritical to make him lose something like that when the main characters get magic mechs and vehicles and shit every two seasons or whatever. Really doesn't align with the "tech bad" message.
I also just don't like "tech bad." Tech having control over life and politics is bad, things like apps tracking your data, security cameras tracking your face, things like that. Anything that anyone of significant power could use to oppress or control others.
But tech for things LIKE MOBILITY AIDS can do some amazing shit. Trains are technology, hospital equipment is technology, the tools I use to draw are technology. Technology is not inherently evil. Anything used to TRACK you, or PROFILE you is never good, no matter who tries to tell you otherwise.
There is also the way it can be used to replace people. Why the FUCK are we making robots that draw instead of making robots that can do dangerous shit for us instead. Jobs that have high mortality rates but still need doing for whatever reason. THAT'S the kind of shit that should be replacing humans. Not this generative AI bullshit.
There's, and say it with me now, NUANCE TO THE SUBJECT.
The "tech bad" message also really sucks when the two focus characters of Rebooted are androids but maybe I'm just stupid idk
"Well the Overlord had control over the spider legs" just don't connect your mobility aid to the fucking internet? Idk man, I guess Cyrus is the kind of fucker to have ovens that can connect to YouTube or some shit if it's that much of a problem.
I think the only way going back to a normal wheelchair works is if Cyrus has a distrust of advanced tech after the Overlord thing. But he doesn't, he's the one who makes the vehicles in Possession.
There's also the debate over "technically disabled" characters. But I'm not disabled in the same way Cyrus is, so it's really not something I can comment on. I am hella open to discussion if anyone IS disabled in a similar way to him, though.
If I keep the advanced mobility aid, I will definitely not keep the spider theme. I know that for sure.
Keep in mind that Nostalgia's Rebooted is going to have a Y2K futurism aesthetic, also. Those transparent blobject computers and stuff are really cute.

i think it's so weird how the internet used to genuinely be a nice place to be, because it wasn't really marketable and it wasn't the convenient "everything is on here and everything Will be on here" as it is now. it was just little groups of people in their own little corners making forums and communities. it wasn't ever like "oh no i can't put my laptop down!! i'm addicted to it!!!" it was just .. another way to connect with people. a place to have some games. if you were lonely and didn't have any friends it was a nice little escape. a GENUINELY nice escape. i remember it. i was alive for that. i was young when it was still like this, but it was like that and i remember it. and then phones started to become more like computers. my mom went from having a flip phone to a smart phone. i watched my older sister go from a phone with sliding keyboard where taking pictures was a novelty to social media apps till i got my first phone and suddenly EVERYTHING was in my pocket. phones started to overtake computers for sake of convenience and marketability, and now it's like. every second you spend on your phone is another cent someone else is making. everything you have to do in order to live a life is on your phone. you clock in on your phone. you look at menus at restaurants on your phone. you even order on your phone now!!! in advance! your food will be ready before you get here and you don't have to speak to anyone!!!!! you are constantly near your phone because it is so important to you and so you are now available 24/7!!! it's so convenient it can track your health and habits for you!!! we can also give this data to other apps for your convenience! would you like these companies to know your sleep schedule? would you like these companies to know how fit you are? your medical records are now on your phone! you make appointments on an app now! your medical results are now sent to you on your phone!!!! it's all on your phone! oh, you want to use your computer for this? okay, well the website is practically impossible to navigate because it was made with phones in mind. IT'S ALL ON YOUR PHONE!!!!!

i go to school for something deeply intertwined with the internet. i have film major friends, animator friends, and every other news/media/entertainment outlet intertwined with these fields. many of my friends are very wellversed in most of this stuff because it is literally our job. i've also never been surrounded by so many people with such genuine distaste and hatred for tech ever in my life than these people who work with it for a living. almost all of them i know are so vehemently against streaming services and go out of their way to find physical media, preserve it and salvage it. all my college classes are filled with discussions on dependence on this technology, the dangers of the things we work with, and etc. etc.
it's not really that walkmans and CDs are interesting and cool because they're vintage to us, but because we grew up with those and hate what we have to trade for the sake of "accessibility" that comes with streaming services. we miss years where it wasn't like this. younger generations, people only 5+ years younger than me, are interested in the novelty of a world foreign to them where your every move wasn't tracked and you actually owned the things you bought. that's SAD. AND HORRIFYING ???
and it's just like . i don't know. i've genuinely thought about going to a store, getting rid of my phone and getting a shitty flip phone for calls and texts only before. i WISH i could do that. i can't because i have 40 apps that i can't live without because it is necessary for my job and medical appoinments (i am chronically ill). i have to scan QR codes to navigate daily errands and experiences. i have to have an app for my concert tickets. for my movie tickets. for any reservation i make. i need an app to ride the bus. if i go to museums sometimes you scan QR codes to learn more about what's in front of you. AT A MUSEUM. without my phone i'd be completely isolated from the world. you never used to be isolated from the world for not having the internet. it used to be the other way around.
and well. okay. go outside and meet new people, yes, but everyone's online. social settings aren't what they were during the 2000s, not even what they were in the 2010s. 2020 quarantine fundamentally altered how everything is set up as well. to connect with people you get their tiktok or their instagram. you're more unreachable if you have neither.
and what about people who can't go out and find people like them? what if it's not that easy? what if they're disabled and can't get out of the house often? what if they're queer and live in a very conservative area
queer spaces irl are so heavily designed for allos too. not to mention, unless you live in a major city then these places typically are gay bars or the local libraries teen events. maybe i don't want to go to a bar to meet other queer people maybe i want to do something else.
and like. there's kind of not a solution? this is just the world we live in and we have to make due with it. my closest friends are all online and living near each other irl isn't viable for most of us in our current situations. i would love if that were the case. it isn't.
i have to clock into work on my phone. i have to check paystubs on my phone, i don't even get an option for it to be mailed to me. i have to access all my medical documents on the phone.
i appreciate the accessibility of some things, i really do, but my phone is not my phone, it is an android. it's samsung's. my data is theirs and they could brick it if they really wanted to. i have apps on my phone i can't uninstall from samsung.

A few years ago I wrote about how, when planning my wedding, I’d signaled to the Pinterest app that I was interested in hairstyles and tablescapes, and I was suddenly flooded with suggestions for more of the same. Which was all well and fine until—whoops—I canceled the wedding and it seemed Pinterest pins would haunt me until the end of days. Pinterest wasn’t the only offender. All of social media wanted to recommend stuff that was no longer relevant, and the stench of this stale buffet of content lingered long after the non-event had ended.
So in this new era of artificial intelligence—when machines can perceive and understand the world, when a chatbot presents itself as uncannily human, when trillion-dollar tech companies use powerful AI systems to boost their ad revenue—surely those recommendation engines are getting smarter, too. Right?
Maybe not.
Recommendation engines are some of the earliest algorithms on the consumer web, and they use a variety of filtering techniques to try to surface the stuff you’ll most likely want to interact with—and in many cases, buy—online. When done well, they’re helpful. In the earliest days of photo sharing, like with Flickr, a simple algorithm made sure you saw the latest photos your friend had shared the next time you logged in. Now, advanced versions of those algorithms are aggressively deployed to keep you engaged and make their owners money.
More than three years after reporting on what Pinterest internally called its “miscarriage” problem, I’m sorry to say my Pinterest suggestions are still dismal. In a strange leap, Pinterest now has me pegged as a 60- to 70-year-old, silver fox of a woman who is seeking a stylish haircut. That and a sage green kitchen. Every day, like clockwork, I receive marketing emails from the social media company filled with photos suggesting I might enjoy cosplaying as a coastal grandmother.
I was seeking paint #inspo online at one point. But I’m long past the paint phase, which only underscores that some recommendation engines may be smart, but not temporal. They still don’t always know when the event has passed. Similarly, the suggestion that I might like to see “hairstyles for women over 60” is premature. (I’m a millennial.)
Pinterest has an explanation for these emails, which I’ll get to. But it’s important to note—so I’m not just singling out Pinterest, which over the past two years has instituted new leadership and put more resources into fine-tuning the product so people actually want to shop on it—that this happens on other platforms, too.
Take Threads, which is owned by Meta and collects much of the same user data that Facebook and Instagram do. Threads is by design a very different social app than Pinterest. It’s a scroll of mostly text updates, with an algorithmic “For You” tab and a “Following” tab. I actively open Threads every day; I don’t stumble into it, the way I do from Google Image Search to images on Pinterest. In my Following tab, Threads shows me updates from the journalists and techies I follow. In my For You tab, Threads thinks I’m in menopause.
Wait, what? Laboratorially, I’m not. But over the past several months Threads has led me to believe I might be. Just now, opening the mobile app, I’m seeing posts about perimenopause; women in their forties struggling to shrink their midsections, regulate their nervous systems, or medicate for late-onset ADHD; husbands hiring escorts; and Ali Wong’s latest standup bit about divorce. It’s a Real Housewives-meets-elder-millennial-ennui bizarro world, not entirely reflective of the accounts I choose to follow or my expressed interests.
Meta gave a boilerplate response when I asked how Threads weights its algorithm and determines what people want to see. Spokesperson Seine Kim said what I’m seeing is personalized to me based on a number of signals, “such as accounts and posts you have interacted with in the past on both Threads and Instagram. We also consider factors like how recently a post was made and how many interactions it has received.” (A better explanation might be that Threads has a rage-bait problem, as this intrepid reporter learned.)
What scares me most about this is not that Meta has a shitbucket of data on me (old news) or that the health hacks I’m being shown might be completely illegitimate. It’s that I might be lingering on these posts more than I realize, unconsciously shoveling more signals in and anxiously spiraling around my own identity in the process. For those of us who came of age on the internet some 20 to 30 years ago, the way these recommendation systems work now represents a fundamental shift to how we long thought of our lives online. We used to log on to tell people who we were, or who we wanted to be; now the machines tell us who we are, and sometimes, we might even believe them.
As for Pinterest, I granted the company access to my account so they could investigate why the app recommends ageist, AARP-grade content to me in its emails. It turns out I hadn’t actively logged in to the app in over a year, which means the data it has one me is, ironically, old. Back then I was researching paint, so the app thinks I’m still into that.
Then there’s the grandma hair: Not only had I searched on Pinterest for skincare products and hairstyles in the long-ago past, but Pinterest gives a lot of weight to data from other users who have searched for similar items. So perhaps those other, non-identifiable users are into these hairstyles. The company claims its perceived relevance for recommendations has improved over the past year.
Pinterest’s suggested solution for me? Use Pinterest more. Un-pin stuff I don’t like. Threads also suggested I can fine-tune my own feed by swiping left to hide a post or tapping a three-dot menu to indicate I’m not interested. It’s on me, young buck. In both cases, I’m supposed to tell the algorithms who I am.
I’m supposed to do the work. I’m supposed to swipe more. I’ll be so much better off if I do. And so will they.

I got a lenovo tablet (Android) for my birthday and now I'm wondering what's the way to go ist here. Can be paid or free, trial version would be cute. I got recommended Pixel Studio at a different place, but got hit with ai advertisements after using it for a while and that didn't feel very cute.
Edit: Turns out that the AI app (Pixel Diffusion) I got advertisement for was by the same creator as Pixel Studio, so If you have a strong opinion about that I would not recommend that app period.
I usually use Aseprite, but there is no mobile version.
