Of course the mainstream media chose to highlight Katy Perry in particular as being on board the Blue Origin space trip, and now, as a result, two very important astronauts on that flight are being erased and ignored, or framed as superficial rich people with nothing better to do.
Amanda Nguyen:
A civil rights activist and founder of the nonprofit Rise, known for her work on sexual assault survivors’ rights. In 2013, during her senior year at college while studying astrophysics and working with NASA, she was raped at a frat party. She paused her mission to go to space in order to change legislation for sexual assault survivors. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and awarded TIME’s Woman of the Year for her advocacy and work in this area. Amanda is now the 1st Vietnamese woman to fly to space.
Aisha Bowe:
A former NASA rocket scientist, Aisha Bowe graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in aerospace engineering and a master's in space systems engineering. Bowe is CEO of STEMBoard, an engineering company that works with governments and other organizations.
She also founded LINGO, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education technology company. Bowe is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Her work has been recognized with a NASA Engineering Honor Award, a STEM for Her Woman of the Year and a Black Enterprises Luminary Award.

Everyone is talking about Katy Perry going to space but I want to talk about someone else who was on that flight. Amanda Nguyen is the first Vietnamese women to go to space, she put her dream on pause when she was sexually assaulted because she found out that they destroyed rape kits after 6 months even if they were untested. She spent the next 10 years fighting to rewrite the law that allowed that. And she did it.
It's a shame that her first time in space is overlooked because of who else went up with her. I know she's just happy to fulfill her dream when she thought she'd lose that chance to fight for the rights of sexual assault survivors, but I think she deserves more attention as a women in stem and someone who didn't just buy their way to space.

Anyway I think she's so cool

My thoughts on the NS-31 flight are as follows:
Who cares. "Space" tourism for the rich.
The USSR has already shown us what a real space program looks like.
The last slide is included simply bc it's now my favorite image.

WHY is no one mentioning Amanda Nguyen who was on that Blue Origin flight. first Vietnamese woman to fly to space. drafted the Sexual Assault Survivor’s Rights Act. nominated for a nobel peace prize. HELLO. i’m so fucking tired. i don’t CARE about katy perry, that’s all i keep hearing about in regards to this all-woman flight. i mean i care about her but she’s SO OBVIOUSLY not the most important thing about this. stop talking about Katy and go read about Amanda for god’s sake

Listen if I’ve gotta hear about that group of women that went into space for like 10 minutes.
At least let it Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe that I’m hearing about.
The two people who actually have any right to be going to space out of these self important vapid celebrities.
Aisha Bowe is a former rocket scientist for NASA.
Amanda Nguyen was studying at NASA to become an astronaut but those dreams were put on hold because she was raped.
And she became an activist and has been a vocal fighter for the rights of victims.
If anyone in this world deserves to go to space it’s her.
Like if I gotta hear about it anyway then I’d rather hear about them.
And not billionaires that just discovered the world has borders and how connected to love they feel now.

Really funny how people are yelling about the impact on the environment and global warming when an all women space flight takes place.
And yet all of these people use AI in their daily lives.

Late af but as a queer, minority woman in STEM (ā˜ļøšŸ¤“) there’s absolutely nothing of value from Bezos’s Blue Origin trip with its all female ā€œcrewā€. He used Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyen as tokens and social shields to try skirting criticism
But it is questionable why the two only qualified women involved would willingly be part of the project — seeing as they should’ve known just how bad privatizing space would be for the field and refused to be part of his marketing ploy

Historic All-Female Blue Origin Spaceflight Set to Launch This Spring
Blue Origin will launch its first all-female crewed mission this spring, marking a major milestone in spaceflight history. The New Shepard NS-31 mission will carry six women, including journalist Lauren SĆ”nchez, pop star Katy Perry, and veteran broadcaster Gayle King. The mission will be the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963. A…
