Denmark and Finland have updated their US travel advice for transgender people, joining the handful of European countries that have sought to caution US-bound travellers in recent weeks as reports emerge of ordeals at the American border.
Denmark said this week it had begun advising transgender travellers to contact the US embassy in Copenhagen before departure to ensure there would be no issues with travel documents.
The change came after Donald Trump made a priority of rolling back trans and non-binary rights, announcing that the US would only recognise two genders and signing off on executive orders that sought to exclude transgender people from the US military, limit their access to sport and curtail gender-transition procedures for people under the age of 19.
The Danish foreign ministry made no mention of Trump but noted that the application form for the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization allows travellers to choose only male or female. Danish law, in contrast, allows citizens to identify their gender as X.
“If your passport has the gender designation X or you have changed gender, it is recommended to contact the US embassy prior to travel for guidance on how to proceed,” the Danish travel advisory page now reads.
Officials said that no Danish citizens had been refused entry to the US or detained at the border since Trump took office. Instead, the LGBT+ Danmark association said it had requested the advisory update.
“We are worried that people could be stopped at the airport and refused entry, or that something inappropriate and uncomfortable could happen at the airport,” Susanne Branner Jespersen told Danish broadcaster Radio IIII.
Earlier this month, Germany also reportedly flagged that transgender travellers or those travelling with the gender X marked on their passports should contact US diplomatic missions before their departure.
Soon after, Finland updated its advice page. “If the applicant’s current sex on their passport is different from their sex confirmed at birth, the US authorities may refuse entry,” the page, updated in mid-March, reads.
Other European countries have sought to sharpen their language around US entry requirements. In Germany, news that three German nationals had been detained at the border led the government to update its travel advisory to note that a visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry into the US.
“The final decision on whether a person can enter the US lies with the US border authorities,” a spokesperson for the foreign minister told Reuters.
British officials also appeared to have revisited their US travel advisory, which now notes that anyone found breaking the country’s entry rules could face arrest or detention.
Earlier this month it emerged that a British tourist had been detained in the US for 10 days after she was told she should have applied for a working visa, instead of a tourist visa.
When asked by Reuters, the Foreign Office declined to comment on why it had changed the advisory or confirm the date that it was done.

Transfer Day
A century ago, the United States made its final territorial acquisition with the purchase of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Located at the southernmost stretch of the Caribbean, the Virgin Islands are a group of three main islands — Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas, and a cluster of 50 minor cays and islands. The day is celebrated throughout the Virgin Islands with great vigor. Parades are held at the state halls, and the American Flag is hoisted during the evening ceremony.
History of Transfer Day
The American military leadership began eyeing the Virgin Islands in the mid-1860s. The idea of the acquisition was put forward by the Secretary of State William H. Seward in 1867. For a negotiated price of $7.5 million, the Danish government ratified the sale. But the islands bore witness to intense catastrophe in the following year. Back home, the impending impeachment of President Andrew Johnson upset the proceedings even further, and the plan was finally dropped. Decades passed but the notion of a Caribbean naval base persisted with the top diplomats of the United States.
In 1900, the Secretary of State John Hay initiated the second round of negotiations, and a sale was agreed upon for $5 million. However, this time, the Danish waged their revenge and blew the deal out of the Panama Canals.
The relations between the two holdings remained sour for the majority of the early 20th century. However, the fear of European expansion in the Caribbean pushed the American diplomats to enter into a fresh round of negotiations. In March 1916, the United States offered $25 million in gold coins in exchange for the immediate cessation of the Virgin Islands. The deal was finalized in the same year, and the treaty was approved by the U.S. Senate on September 7, 1916.
Although the sale was ratified to establish a U.S. military stronghold in the Caribbean, the island proved to be a lucrative investment because of the booming tourism industry. Today, Virgin Islanders are American citizens with a seat in Congress and many constitutional protections. March 31 is celebrated to honor the peaceful cessation of the islands and the strategic expansion of the American empire.
Transfer Day timeline
1666
The Danish Occupation
Denmark occupies St. Thomas and begins consolidating the adjacent islands of St. John and St. Croix through siege and/or purchase.
1807
The European Tussle
The British acquire the islands after the fall of the Danes and hold on to them until the Danish win them back in 1815.
1917
The American Purchase
The United States of America purchases the three islands for $25 million.
1927
The Constitutional Grant
The American constitution grants citizenship to the inhabitants of the Virgin Islands.
Transfer Day FAQs
Is Transfer Day a federal holiday?
Transfer Day is a public holiday and the majority of businesses and schools stay closed.
Which nationality do the Virgin Islanders have?
The Virgin Islanders are U.S. citizens. Because they derive their citizenship from a constitutional statute, the Islanders can not participate in federal elections but since 1970, they have been able to elect a delegate to represent them in the United States Congress.
Do U.S citizens need a passport to visit the Virgin Islands?
U.S. citizens arriving from the mainland and Puerto Rico do not need to present a passport or visa to enter the Virgin Islands.
How To Observe Transfer Day
Reenact the ceremony: It is fair to say that the Transfer Day ceremony had a bit of a dramatic flair. From the lowering of the Dannebrog (the Danish flag) to the swelling number of generals as the Star-Spangled Banner filled the air. On March 31, stage a skit of your own.
Read about the history: The U.S. Virgin Islands have been home to humans since 1000 B.C. From the native inhabitants to the Danish occupation, the islands have a rich and diverse history. The islands have also borne witness to mass ethnic cleansing, displacement, slavery, and other atrocities. On Transfer Day, take a quick crash course on America’s Caribbean territory.
Eat Red Grout: Red Grout is a traditional Danish pudding, made from guavas and tapioca. It’s a delicacy on the U.S. Virgin Islands and is served to locals every year on Transfer Day. The dish is easy to make and is enjoyed best with a scoop of vanilla cream.
5 Lesser Known Facts About The U.S Virgin Islands
A fight for freedom: A century before the United States outlawed slavery, the islanders led an unsuccessful slave rebellion in 1733.
The bioluminescent nightlife: Pockets of the Virgin Islands light up at night due to the clusters of tiny plankton, called dinoflagellates, spread all across the space.
The party of the pirates: The Virgin Islands remain a safe haven for the pirates, a practice that started in the 17th century when Governor Adolph Esmit allowed them to enter the area for lucrative trade opportunities.
Christopher Columbus coined the name: Columbus stopped by the islands in 1493 and named the cluster of lands ‘The Virgins’ in honor of Saint Ursula and her 10,000 virgins.
Home to Alexander Hamilton: One of the Founding Fathers of the U.S., Hamilton spent a sizable chunk of his youth on the streets of St. Croix, working as a clerk and experimenting with his writing.
Why Transfer Day is Important
It celebrates diversity: The islands stretch across the Caribbean and are home to a diverse community of Native, Black, and Latino Americans. Transfer Day illuminates the rich contribution of these societies to the fabric of America.
It uplifts the tourism industry: Tourism is the backbone of the Virgin Islands’ economy. Over 50% of the Virgin Islanders are employed in the hospitality and travel-related industries. Transfer Day educates us about the hidden beauty of the islands.
It honors the strategic triumph: The bloodless, strifeless transfer was made possible after years of strategic negotiations and good-faith politics. At the dawn of World War I, the acquisition prevented the establishment of a German stronghold across the Caribbean coast as well.

Transatlantic Airfares Plunge as Western European Travel to U.S. Declines Amid Trump-Era Concerns
NEW YORK/LONDON, June 18 (Reuters) – Transatlantic airfares have fallen to pre-pandemic levels, as fewer Western Europeans opt to travel to the United States, citing concerns over U.S. border policies and political tensions under President Donald Trump.
The drop in demand comes at the start of the peak summer travel season, typically a high point for airlines and travel companies. But data shows a noticeable decline: Overseas arrivals to the U.S. fell 2.8% in May compared to the previous year, while arrivals from Western Europe dropped 4.4%, led by steep declines from Denmark and Germany, according to preliminary data from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office.
Looking ahead, bookings suggest this trend will continue. Inbound travel to the U.S. for July is down 13% year-over-year, according to aviation analytics firm OAG Aviation.
The downturn is hitting European airlines particularly hard. Carriers like Air France-KLM and Lufthansa are already grappling with rising labor and fuel costs, as well as disruptions from Middle East conflicts that are lengthening and complicating routes to Asia.
Average transatlantic airfares have been falling steadily since early 2025, after Trump proposed controversial policies including annexing Greenland, intensifying global trade tensions, and tightening U.S. border controls. A stronger U.S. dollar has also discouraged European visitors.
In the first quarter, round-trip economy fares between the U.S. and Europe dropped an average of 7%, with some routes—like Atlanta to London—down as much as 55%, Cirium data shows.
Lower European demand is combining with a shift in American consumer behavior. U.S. travelers are waiting longer to book and hunting for bargains, contributing to softer pricing across the board.
“This year is shaping up to be more difficult for airlines on transatlantic routes,” said Aran Ryan, director of industry studies at Tourism Economics. He noted fewer Europeans are flying to the U.S., and outbound growth from America to Europe is slowing compared to last year.
According to booking app Hopper, the average round-trip fare from the U.S. to Europe this summer is $817—down 10% from last year and similar to 2019 levels.
Airlines are responding with price cuts to fill seats. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr anticipates weaker demand in the third quarter, while Air France-KLM CEO Ben Smith reported a “slight pullback” in transatlantic traffic.
In May, travel from Denmark to the U.S. dropped 20%, from Germany 19%, and from France 9%. In March, Germany updated its U.S. travel advisory, reminding citizens that a visa does not guarantee entry.
Some airlines, like Lufthansa and United Airlines, say growing demand from American travelers flying to Europe is helping balance out the European slowdown. United noted a 6% drop in bookings from Europe in the first quarter but said strong U.S.-originating traffic filled the gap. Delta reported that 80% of its long-haul international bookings come from the U.S., and said fares from the region are among the highest globally.
Lufthansa plans to target American travelers more aggressively on transatlantic routes, as European demand remains inconsistent. While travel from Western Europe to the U.S. briefly rose 12.1% in April, it dropped again in May.
Despite the uneven demand, the number of international flights departing U.S. airports this summer is up 4.3% year-over-year, according to Hopper.
“We feel really good about the transatlantic market,” American Airlines CFO Devon May said at a recent Wolfe Research conference.

US Entry Becomes A Travel Minefield As Canada, Ireland, Denmark, And Germany Report Cases Of Tourist Detained Despite Valid Visas: New Report You Need to Know
— Tuesday, April 8, 2025 | USA Today
US Travel Becomes Riskier For Visa and Green Card Holders as Canada, Ireland, Denmark, and Germany Issue Warnings Amid Rising Border Scrutiny.
In recent months, many green card holders, visa applicants, and international travelers have found that entering or returning to the United States has become significantly more complex and uncertain. Tougher border inspections and increased enforcement at airports and land entry points are contributing to rising anxiety—part of broader immigration enforcement trends that began under the Trump administration and appear to be continuing.
As the spring and summer travel seasons near, travelers are growing wary. Stories of lawful permanent residents and foreign nationals being questioned, delayed, or even detained have raised red flags for those hoping to vacation, study, or reunite with family in the US. Universities such as Brown have proactively advised international students and staff to avoid unnecessary travel, citing a need for “Caution in the Current Climate.”
Adding to concerns, governments including those of Canada, Ireland, Denmark, and Germany have issued updated advisories, warning their citizens to be meticulous about US entry requirements to avoid complications or detention.
Legal Experts Warn Travelers to Know Their Rights
Immigration lawyers across the country are now urging foreign nationals to understand their legal standing before flying into the US. Stephanie Gee, a Senior Immigration Law Expert at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), explains that three primary groups arrive at US ports of entry: American citizens, green card holders (permanent residents), and visa holders.
US Citizens, By Law, Cannot Be Denied Entry. Green card holders have more protections than visa holders but are still vulnerable to increased scrutiny, especially if there are any red flags in their record. Importantly, both US citizens and green card holders may legally decline to answer questions from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents or hand over digital devices for inspection—though doing so can result in delays.
Understanding Your Risk Based on Immigration Status
The level of scrutiny travelers face varies based on numerous factors, including nationality, visa type, and prior criminal or immigration history. According to a recent report, immigration attorney Stephen Yale-Loehr pointed to a draft list of 43 nations whose citizens might soon face travel restrictions. While the list hasn’t been publicly finalized, it reportedly includes countries such as Iran, Libya, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Cuba.
Travelers from countries potentially facing future travel bans are being strongly advised to reassess their plans—even if they possess valid documents. Visa holders from these regions are particularly at risk of being denied entry or placed in secondary inspection, which can sometimes lead to hours or even days of detainment.
There have been increasing reports of visa holders being forced to return on the next outbound flight, while others have faced prolonged questioning or temporary detention. Green card holders are also not exempt. Extended trips abroad, especially when paired with any prior criminal convictions, can result in difficult re-entry experiences. One such case involved Fabian Schmidt, a German National with a US Green Card, who was detained at Boston Logan International Airport over a years-old minor drug offense.
Electronic Devices May Be Searched
Another challenge many travelers now face is the possibility of being asked to unlock smartphones, laptops, or cameras during inspection. While US citizens and permanent residents are not legally obligated to provide passwords, visa holders who refuse may be denied entry. Even for those not required to comply, refusing access to electronics can lead to extended delays or further questioning.
CBP agents may review devices for material that they believe indicates criminal or security concerns, including past legal troubles, affiliations with extremist groups, or evidence of visa fraud.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recommends travelers take proactive steps: request the names and badge numbers of CBP agents if asked to unlock devices, and always get a receipt if any items are confiscated. These steps help ensure accountability in cases of wrongful searches or seizures.
Steps to Take If Entry Is Denied or Delayed
Though not common, detainments and extended questioning do occur. If you or someone you know is subject to secondary screening or held for any reason, immigration attorneys stress the importance of staying calm and being prepared. Having contact information for a trusted friend or an immigration lawyer can make a critical difference.
Travelers who are not fluent in English have the right to request an interpreter. Stephanie Gee emphasizes that this request should be documented formally to ensure it’s honored and to protect the traveler’s rights in case of future legal issues.
Prepare Before You Travel
As summer approaches and more people plan trips, green card holders and visa holders should carefully consider the potential risks of traveling internationally. While US Citizens are Guaranteed Re-entry, permanent residents and Visa-Holding Visitors Face a Different Reality—especially those with legal issues or originating from countries flagged by US authorities.
Before booking a ticket, it’s advisable to consult an Immigration Professional who can assess your personal circumstances. Knowing your rights and preparing for the worst-case scenario may help avoid unnecessary stress or even denial of entry.
In this new era of heightened scrutiny, staying informed and vigilant can make all the difference.

Countries are warning trans travellers about visiting the US

Countries are warning trans travellers about visiting the US
Tumblr media
Several European countries have issued specific travel warnings to transgender citizens visiting the US after the Trump administration’s anti-trans crackdown.
On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an anti-trans executive order titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”
The order directed federal agencies to only recognise “two sexes, male and female,” which “are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
Trans Americans say that as a result, the US government will now only issue passports to them listing their sex assigned at birth.
Trump’s executive order has sparked lawsuits on behalf of furious trans and non-binary Americans.
‘US authorities may refuse entry’
Now, a number of European countries have warned their trans and non-binary citizens, including those who have their sex marker listed as “X”, to use caution and seek advice from American embassies before travelling to the United States.
Germany was one of the first countries to issue a travel warning.
“Travelers who have the gender entry ‘X’ or whose current gender entry differs from their gender entry at birth should contact the relevant US diplomatic mission in Germany before entering the country and find out the applicable entry requirements,” the country’s Foreign Office advised.
Denmark is one country that went as far as advising that trans people may not be allowed entry into the US.
In Finland, their advice also states, “If the applicant’s current sex on their passport is different from their sex confirmed at birth, the US authorities may refuse entry.
“The policy of the United States is that an individual’s sex is not changeable.”
France’s foreign ministry has instructed trans citizens to declare their sex assigned at birth when applying for a US visa or through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA).
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs said, “ESTA and visa application forms to the US require travellers to declare their sex.
“The US authorities have indicated that this should reflect the traveller’s biological sex at birth.
“Travellers who have an ‘X’ marker on their passport or whose sex on their passport differs from sex assigned at birth should contact the Embassy of the United States of America in Dublin for further details on specific entry requirements.”
Trans Americans are being issued male passports
High-profile transgender Americans have also furiously spoken out about the difficulty they’ve had under Trump’s anti-trans administration.
Transgender RuPaul’s Drag Race star Adore Delano said this week she’d legally changed her name at a US Social Security office. But the officials denied Adore a female passport.
Adore told her followers she would now have to travel internationally with a male passport.
“It’s true you guys, they’re not changing my gender federally so my passport will remain male,” she said.
“F**king wild because I travel outside the country for a living. I’m filming my first movie outside of the country this week. So all of my documentation that’s federal will remain male.
“They’re really out here calling us men, girls.”
Back in February, transgender Euphoria actress Hunter Schafer also slammed the Trump administration after she received a male passport.
Hunter said she applied for the replacement after hers was stolen. The actress was shocked when the passport arrived with her gender suddenly listed as male, despite legally updating her documents around a decade ago.

Note
american here. but whats all this w brexit and the eu and homegrown players and everything? like how will this affect the league? could you explain this in simple and easy to understand terms please?
Okay well I’ll try to break it down by terms first and then on how it’ll affect the WSL:
EU - European Union. A political and economic union of 27 countries primarily located in Europe. The countries within this union are forced to adhere to certain criteria to get in and then universal laws, practices, regulations, financial contributions etc., and in exchange are able to benefit from an internal single market so that most have a free movement of people (ie. no visas or passport controls for a citizen of one EU country to get into another), goods, services and capital. Most also share a common currency, the Euro.
Football related: all EU players are those who have citizenship from one of the 27 countries which make up the union (Austria, Italy, Belgium, Latvia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Croatia, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Malta, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Portugal, Finland, Romania, France, Slovakia, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Sweden, Ireland) and so in accordance with EU law they are allowed to play in England without visa restrictions.
Also note: there are countries who are part of the wider Schengen Area who aren’t part of the EU but have agreements with the union which allows them to benefit from a lot of the same policies. It is the 26 Schengen countries who have abolished all sorts of border control between them. These include most of the countries listed above as well as Norway and Iceland whose citizens can also play in England at the moment without the need for a Visa
Brexit - derived from ‘Britain exiting [from the EU]’. The political and economic withdrawal of the United Kingdom (made up of the countries England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) from the European Union. All the way back in 2016 a referendum was held where UK citizens answered yes or no over whether the UK should leave the EU. The majority of votes (51.9%) were to leave and so this process of leaving began. Four years later and the UK has officially left the EU but nothing much has changed yet since agreements haven’t been come to over how such things as free movement of people are going to work out yet between the UK and the EU/Schengen Area.
Football related: homegrown players are those players that, if the same criteria is stuck to for women’s football as it is for men’s, have been on the books of a club affiliated with the Football Association (FA - English version of the USSF and doesn’t include players coming from Scotland or Northern Ireland but it does Wales) for at least three years before they turn 21. So this does not mean they have to be English, rather that they’ve been affiliated with an English club for three years before the age of 21.
With Brexit, the visa free movement and not needing a work permit to work in any of the other EU member states will potentially stop, and many of the current EU players in England would not qualify for visas or working permits to keep playing in the English league if they are subjected to the same rules as non-EU players are now.

Traveling To America? New ESTA Registration Mandated?
What Countries Are in the Visa Waiver Program?
Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brunei, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Travel Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Tumblr media
A website, operated by the American government, is where you register for ESTA: esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The ESTA information you submit via the computer is compared with certain American law enforcement databases and then either approved or denied. Foreign travelers will not be able to submit ESTA applications at American airports after arriving or at a U.S. Embassy in their country.
What if I Don't Have Plans to Travel to the U.S. Yet?
VWP travelers are not required to have specific plans to travel to the United States before they apply for an ESTA Travel Authorization. As soon as VWP travelers begin to plan a trip to visit the U.S., they are encouraged to apply for travel authorization through the ESTA website. Applicants are not required to update their destination addresses or itineraries if they change after their ESTA Travel Authorization has been granted.
Tumblr media
An ESTA Travel Authorization only authorizes a traveler to board an airline or ship for travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program. After they arrive, travelers who obtained an ESTA Travel Authorization may still be denied entry (also called "admission") at a U.S. port of entry, such as an American airport. An approved ESTA is not a guarantee of admissibility at an American airport. In all cases, the American airport officers make the final determination whether a foreign traveler can enter the U.S. or not. You still have to establish to the satisfaction of the inspecting officer that you are entitled to be admitted to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program.
Can I Change My Travel Itinerary?
It is possible to change an itinerary on an existing ESTA Travel Authorization; ESTA is designed so that you can update parts of it at any time. Travelers who did not get an ESTA approval may be denied boarding by the airlines, experience delayed processing, or be denied admission to the U.S. at the American airport.
What If I Already Have a Valid B1/B2 Visitor Visa?
While the ESTA Travel Authorization is completed online with no interview, there are Visas that require a U.S. Embassy interview. The Visa process has separate procedures, which generally require an appointment, travel to a U.S. Embassy, an interview with a Consular Officer, processing time, and the payment of an application fee. If a foreign national already went to the U.S. Embassy and has a valid B1/B2 Visitor Visa pasted in their passport it is not necessary to get an ESTA Travel Authorization because the traveler will be entering with a B1/B2 Visitor Visa and not through the Visa Waiver Program. Keep in mind that an approved ESTA Travel Authorization is not a Visa.
Can I Re-Apply for an ESTA Travel Authorization if Denied?
Yes, but you must wait at least 10 days to reapply and your circumstances must have changed. Unless there is a change in a substantive fact, re-application will not change the result. Keep in mind that applying for an ESTA Travel Authorization with false information can cause a foreign national to be permanently barred from ever entering America. The ESTA system is designed to try to prevent individuals from changing and manipulating an ESTA entry until they receive an approval.
What If I am Denied an ESTA Travel Authorization and Have No Changed Circumstances?
There are three types of responses to an ESTA application; approved, pending or travel not authorized (denied). Applicants who receive a "pending" response are advised to check the website 72 hours later. Applicants who are denied will be required to go to a U.S. Embassy to apply for a formal nonimmigrant visa, such as a B1/B2 Visa, which may take months.
Can a Traveler Find Out the Reason Why an ESTA Application was Denied?
The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security has stated that travelers may contact the DHS Travel Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP at dhs.gov) but there are no guarantees that information about a denial will be divulged. U.S. Embassies and Consulates are not required to provide details about an ESTA denial nor resolve the issue that caused the ESTA denial.
What If I Have a Criminal Record?
Only those qualified to travel under the VWP are eligible to pre-register through ESTA. Persons who have been arrested and/or convicted are generally not eligible for VWP and probably require a formal Visa, such as a B1/B2 Visa, to travel to America. If a foreign national has received tickets for speeding (which don't usually result in an arrest or conviction) they are probably still eligible for the VWP and ESTA. If a foreign traveler has been denied entry into or deported from the U.S., they require a formal Visa.
Do Any Other Countries Have a Similar Program?
Australia has a program called the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) that mandates travelers to submit an ETA application electronically through a website requesting permission to travel to Australia. Airlines may refuse to accept passengers who do not have either an approved ETA or Visa to enter Australia.
How Long Will the ESTA Application Data be Stored? Who Can Access It?
The ESTA Travel Authorization is valid for two years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first. The American government will maintain the information for at least 15 years to allow retrieval of the information for law enforcement, national security, or investigatory purposes. Information submitted through ESTA can also be shared with any U.S. government organization.
What Information Does the Airlines Get?
Airlines will receive confirmation of a passenger's ESTA status visa the "Advance Passenger Information System" (APIS) which shows whether the ESTA authorization has been granted for a Visa Waiver Program traveler. It is recommended that the traveler print out the ESTA application approval in order to maintain a record of their ESTA application number and to have confirmation of their ESTA status.
What About Children?
Accompanied and unaccompanied children, regardless of age, are required to obtain an independent ESTA Travel Authorization.
What if a Mistake was Made on the ESTA Application?
The ESTA website will ask applicants to review their application before submitting it. Also, there is an update function for certain information such as email address, telephone number, or flight information. If an applicant makes a mistake that cannot be "updated," he will need to submit a new ESTA application.
What if I Only Have a Connecting Flight Through the U.S.?
Visa Waiver Program visitors who have a connecting flight in the U.S. are required to either have ESTA Travel Authorization or a Visa from a U.S. Embassy in their passport to travel through the U.S. even for a one hour stop. If a traveler is only planning to stop in the U.S. en route to another country, the traveler should enter the words "In Transit" and his final destination in the address lines under the heading "Address While In The United States" on the ESTA application.
What Are the Questions on the ESTA Travel Authorization Application?
The traveler must provide (in English) biographical data including name, birth date, country of citizenship, country of residence, email address, sex, telephone number, passport information, destination address in the U.S., travel information (round trip airline ticket, flight number and city where you are boarding) as well as questions regarding communicable diseases (chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inquinale, HIV, leprosy, lymphogranuloma venereum, syphilis [active], tuberculosis [active], and others), physical or mental disorders, drug addiction problems, arrests, convictions, past history of visa cancellation or denial, and prior deportations from the U.S. The traveler will also be asked whether they are seeking work in the U.S., have ever been deported or tried to get a visa by fraud or misrepresentation. The traveler will be asked if they have ever detained a child of a U.S. Citizen granted custody of the child, and whether they have ever asserted immunity from prosecution.
Do I Select "Business" or "Pleasure (Tourist) at the Airport Port of Entry?
After the ESTA Travel Authorization is granted, the foreign traveler will be interviewed by government officers at the first American airport they land. The officer will ask what the foreign traveler will be doing in America and the questioning can take up to four hours in a detained setting called "secondary inspection." The officer may ask the traveler "what else are you doing in America?" repeatedly to try to get "the real" answer. If the traveler is only going to be a tourist, they are not allowed to do any business, including meeting with any attorneys, applying for a bank account, meeting with real estate agents, or other business consulting activities. Even though the traveler is going to conduct just one business meeting while in America, they are required to report it and enter as a business visitor. The business visitor is allowed to participate in tourist activities, but the tourist visitor is not allowed to participate in any business activities. Therefore, if any business might be conducted while in America, it is best to tell the government officers about it at the airport to avoid being accused of lying, put immediately on a plane back to your home country, and barred from America for life.

Can I Be Searched in the American Airport? Am I Entitled to Legal Representation?
While being interviewed at the American airport, all luggage (even locked bags) can be searched, as well as the traveler's body and his/her cell phone (including text messages and phone numbers) and laptop (including hard drive). The officers may "google" a traveler's name and check out their myspace, Facebook or hyves pages. The traveler is not allowed to be represented by an attorney or even call their attorney while in "secondary inspection." Bathroom visits, water and food may be limited, so it is best to prepare for such an occasion while still on the plane before landing.
Do I Still Have to Go Through the "US-VISIT" Program at the American AirportForeign travelers arriving at American airports and seaports must still be photographed and fingerprinted every time they enter the U.S Who Should I Ask For Help to Fill Out the ESTA Application?
The information a traveler provides on the ESTA application can remain in their file with U.S. authorities for a minimum of 15 years - probably longer. If a foreign traveler has some questions about how to answer the questions so as not to be permanently barred from America, it would be prudent to them to pay for a legal consultation with an American Immigration Attorney who is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Beware of unauthorized private websites that offer ESTA application assistance for $49.99 - they are usually not authorized to practice immigration law and are asking travelers to pay for a copy of the application questions, which are free on the dhs.gov website. If I Am Denied the ESTA Travel Authorization Will it Effect My Ability to Obtain a Visa at the U.S. Embassy?
Tumblr media
When the ESTA Travel Authorization is denied, the foreign traveler must make an appointment at a U.S. Embassy in their country to apply for a formal Visa. The U.S. Embassy is operated by the U.S. Department of State and there are no expedited procedures for those who have been denied ESTA Travel Authorization. Because the ESTA program is so new, it is impossible to predict how badly a denial of the ESTA Travel Authorization will impact a traveler's application for a Visa at a U.S. Embassy or impact their future travel to America in general. American Immigration Attorneys are in close contact with their foreign clients and will share the denial information with each other starting in January 2009. Currently there are no government policies regulating this area of the law, or opportunities to appeal a denial.
When Is the a "New" ESTA Travel Authorization Required?
A new ESTA Travel Authorization is required during the two years if (1) the traveler is issued a new passport (2) the traveler changes his name (3) the traveler changes his or her gender (4) the traveler's country of citizenship changes or (5) the circumstances underlying the traveler's previous responses to any of the ESTA application questions requiring a "yes" or "no" response have changed (such as a new arrest). Can an American Immigration Attorney, Travel Agent or Employer Fill Out the ESTA Application?
A third party, such as a relative, travel agent or American Immigration Attorney, is permitted to submit an ESTA application on behalf of a VWP traveler. Be aware that the traveler is still responsible under the law for the answers submitted on his or her behalf by a third party.

Making Sense of EU Current Events:  How the European Union Got to Where It Is Today
Most Americans feel a sense of closeness with Europeans.  We are in sync culturally. We have shared historical experiences. We love many of the same cars, luxury products, and tech gadgets. But do Americans really understand Europe?
For years, we have read about the Common Market, the European Union, the Euro – but do many Americans understand why these were formed, how they developed and what they were designed to do?  The news is full of stories about Brexit, populism, and a backlash against migrants, but what is the overall context behind these movements and sentiments?  How do these issues fit into the overall picture of Europe in the year 2021?
As a new writer, my humble wish is to use this column to create a space that explores the threads that interweave and make Europe such a fascinating place.  Taken separately, there are many pieces of the past and present that are interesting.  As we explore more and more pieces, it is my hope that they can become building blocks to create a better understanding of Europe as we find it today.
To start down this journey, it is necessary to be familiar with some key milestones in the life of the EU. In many ways, these tell the story of how Europe rose from the ashes of World War II and reached its current state - with all of its promises and challenges.  To be able to understand the present, we need to take a few minutes to visit the recent past:  Why was the European Union formed and how did it evolve?  After understanding a few fundamental points, we can turn our attention with greater clarity to the challenges that faced by Europe and the European Union as it looks to the future.
For those of us in later generations, it is hard to imagine the magnitude of the problems that Europe faced in 1945. In the aftermath of the most destructive war that mankind had ever seen - millions dead and injured, factories and jobs wiped out, widespread economic collapse and hunger, mass homelessness. There was also the new reality of geopolitical competition between the West and the Communist East. Overall, the nations and the people of Europe were traumatized.  They found themselves placed between a past that had gone down in flames and an uncertain future.
Out of this landscape of destruction and chaos, there emerged a group of leaders who had a vision for the future. They came from France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States. They dreamed of a Europe secured against the threat of another war and harmonious economically and politically.  Americans showed leadership in the creation of NATO and generosity in the Marshall Plan, thereby offering protection to Europe and the financing needed to get recovery underway.  For their part, the European leaders of the day planted seeds in the form of new institutions that ushered in the promise of a new political and economic order.
The seeds grew over time to become the European Union.  Thanks to the creative vision of this generation of European and American leaders, the framework emerged for a Europe that could build on the foundation and yield more than 70 years of relative stability and prosperity. The founding institutions of this post-war Europe are among the greatest political achievements in modern history.
The Expanding Influence of the EU in the Lives of Member States and Citizens
It is useful to take a step back and review some of the key treaties and agreements that have created the Europe of today.  They tell the story of deepening integration of the continent and the expanding role of the central European governing bodies.
MILESTONES IN THE HISTORY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Treaty of Paris (1951)
Founding members: France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg
Set up a central body to regulate industries and established a common market for coal and steel.
It set the template for future European Commision, European Parliament, and European Court of Justice.
French Prime Minister Robert Schumann and his German counterpart, Konrad Adenauer, were drivers behind this treaty.
Politically, the immediate goal was to make any future war between France and Germany “unthinkable”.  Longer term, it was hoped that the ECSC would mark the birth of a future united Europe.
Treaty of Rome (1957)
Established the European Economic Community. Set up a customs union and mapped out progressive reduction of custom duties.
Proposed the concept of a single market for goods, labor, services and capital.
Created the European Commission to implement a Common Agricultural Policy, Common Transport Policy, and European Social Fund.
Schengen Agreement (1985)
Largely abolished internal border checks between members, allowing free movement of people across borders.  Set up common visa policy.
Single European Act (1986)
Committed members to a timeline for economic merger (including a single currency) and common foreign and domestic policies.
It called for increased legislative powers for the European Parliament and streamlined the process for the passing of laws.
Maastricht Treaty (1992)
Officially created the “European Union”; provided common citizenship and passports
Allowed citizens to reside in any member state.
Established European Central Bank, paving the way for a single European currency; included provision to apply inflation and public debt level requirements to future applicants.
Mapped out closer cooperation between police forces and courts in criminal cases.
Treaty of Amsterdam (1997)
Important changes to Maastricht agreement: members agree to transfer powers from national governments to European Parliament
Large impact on immigration, civil and criminal laws.
Treaty of Lisbon (2007)
Amends Treaty of Rome and Maastricht; relates to internal decision making processes (e.g. decisions by qualified majority rather than unanimous vote)
Created formal positions for President of the European Council and representative for Foreign Affairs.
With each of these agreements, the affairs of the member nation-states became more and more intertwined. Regulations were streamlined and made uniform. Goods and services could be traded across national boundaries more easily and cheaply. Citizens became able to travel freely without passports throughout large parts of the region. Changes in the labor rules created a continent-wide labor market. All in all, these new arrangements changed the face of Europe and the lives of many of its people.
Expanding Boundaries of the EU
While the dramatic alterations were underway, the European community itself was expanding.
Original members: France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg
1973: United Kingdom (exited 2020), Denmark, Ireland
1981: Greece
1986: Spain, Portugal
1995: Austria, Sweden, Finland
2004: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Cyprus
2007: Bulgaria, Romania
2013: Croatia
A Time of Dramatic Changes for the Europe and the European Union
As all of this was happening, there were fundamental policy shifts and historical waves at play as well.  Beginning in the 1970s, richer countries began to subsidize poorer members with  transfer payments.  These allowed for more job creation and new infrastructure in the poor nations of southern Europe. The European Parliament was formed and, starting in 1979, began to have direct elections of its members.  The period saw the development of an environmental movement in the west and, in the east, the Polish labor union began to put pressure on the Communist government. History reached a climax with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and the subsequent collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, followed by Russia itself.  There then was an emphasis on integrating these former members of the Warsaw Pact into the European community, culminating in a massive enlargement of the European Union in the first decade of the 21st-century.
Where Does the EU Go From Here?
The original concept of the European Union was visionary and the resulting structures changed the face of Europe. Europe has become prosperous and the degree of personal freedom and wealth is impressive. If this is so, then why do things appear to have gotten off track?  Why is there so much ‘Euro-scepticism”, which reached a peak with Brexit?  Indeed, as the role of the EU in the lives of citizens has become so much deeper, the level of resentment directed at the bureaucrats in Brussels has grown. Also, with the dramatically expanded number of member countries, new political, economic and cultural fissures have opened. The desire to be part of the EU has dissipated as the news has become full of reports on the constant squabbling over procedures, divergent views over the degree of economic and financial integration, and immigration policies. The outcome of the next chapter of the story of Europe will depend on how well its leaders navigate these tricky questions and whether the people of today hold on to the vision of freedom and liberty that guided earlier generations.
With this brief historical introduction out of the way, your humble columnist will begin to use this “About Europe” space to explore some of the issues and challenges facing Europe today.
