Another bg3 thought dump but I've been thinking about this all day. I think a big part of why I love the Boat Scene in Gale's romance (or at least the version I've played), and really Gale's Romance in general, is bc there's so much potential for nuance.

My Tav, Zephyr, isn't particularly faithful to any one god or the gods in general (though she does enjoy studying faerunian theology), and so in theory she's not against opposing and maybe even deposing Mystra. But she knows that many of the "gods" of the modern era were once mortals, and until the cycle can be broken she doesn't want anyone, least of all someone she cares about, to take that risk and lose themself.

When I first got to the Boat Scene, I couldn't help the feeling of dread I got bc I was sure Gale and Zephyr were about to break up. Bc I knew how strongly Gale wanted this and for (mostly) the right reasons, but I also knew Zephyr wasn't going to budge. And I feel like in many games, that would be that; characters disagree, they break up. Even though Zephyr would be against it for Gale's sake, bc she loves who he is, not who he could be.

But the dialogue is so interesting bc it actually lets them argue about it, while also giving the player to stay with him anyway.

"This doesn't have to be the end for us."

"But I could be so much more to you."

Now true source of Gale motivation is revealed. He feels like he's not enough. Which allows Zephyr to reiterate that he is, and they stay together and even grow closer!

It just makes both characters feel very real to me, and I appreciate that they can talk and argue until they get deeper and deeper into why the other one feels this way. It's almost like how couples actually are in real life!

@larknnightingale : Zephyr stares at Lisel for a time. Perhaps this is the power she's been hiding. Whatever they throw into the flame, she takes a piece of it--a piece of them--for herself. Or maybe what she says is true. Maybe this future means they will be rid of their curse. They won't know until they find out.

From their belt, they pluck off a small bone--a trophy-- and toss it into the fire.

For the briefest of moments Lisel considered grabbing the bone from the fire and darting away, but the thought passed just as quickly as it appeared. No, she’d invited them here after all, it was best not to spoil it. Still, the flicker of mischief was present in her eyes as she leaned forward to watch the bone in the flames.

“You’ve brought a lot with you.” She remarks offhandedly, motioning into the air behind Zephyr, “Now, you can’t all talk at once…” Her tone invites no response and Zephyr begins to feel as if they’d interrupted a private conversation. She sighed, slightly annoyed. “Parts of you are very far off, like I’m only looking at a reflection of you.”

Lisel opened her eyes and studied the bone intensely. It sat at the edge of the coals, growing shiny, smooth, almost like a pearl. Zephyr waited in anticipation, but nothing much seemed to happen.

Lisel began to worry she’d done something wrong, “Not much for a first impression…” she whispered, annoyed. In an effort to elicit something, she lightly poked at the bone with an extended finger, pulling back her hand quickly so as to not get burned. The pair watched the bone expectantly, but still, nothing.

A sense of urgency began to permeate the air, although it was difficult to tell if its source was the ritual itself or Lisel’s impatience. The bone, though engulfed by the burning wood, had still failed to change at all. Instead, it simply reflected the flames with a smooth, glassy texture. After a tense few moments Liselath reluctantly returned her gaze onto Zephyr.

“Maybe it’s got nothing to say. I’m not sure…” she pauses, shifting her eyes to the bone in the fire as a slight chiming rang through the air. Both of the elves’ ears twitched at the sound.

“Oh, there’s something…” Lisel trailed off, holding up her hand as if to say ‘give me a moment’ and shutting her eyes in a deep concentration. “You’re strange, exceptionally difficult to parse. Delicate, doomed, split?” Her tone indicated confusion, “And they all want to talk over each other…”

“What you feel is so familiar, but also so different- like your feelings can only rhyme with mine.” Lisel peeked an eye open, “No offense intended. Of course.”

She shut her eyes again as a thin line of white smoke began to twist its way up from the fire. It branched out and traversed its way around each of Zephyr’s limbs somewhat menacingly.

“Don’t worry about it.” She added assuredly, adding in a playful lie, “happens all the time.”

The smoke snaked its path over Zephyr’s legs and arms, settling on them with an uncharacteristically heavy presence. They felt like ropes, pinching their skin and making movement nearly impossible. Whether or not Zephyr heeded her advice was lost on Lisel, who instead focused on the overwhelming sense of emptiness engulfing her. She felt cold, dark, isolated, and devoid of any sense of energy. It was enough to make her gasp. The fire seemingly felt it too, as the flames began to sink lower and lower. Lisel shot Zephyr a look of pure shock, wondering if they felt like this often, before turning back towards the shrinking fire.

“Tell me Zephyr,” she began hesitantly, “why negate every happy moment you ever had? It’s an awful choice.” Lisel hummed in agreement, “You could just forget… let something go.” She teetered her head side to side, “But, yes, if you forget…”

Liselath’s voice dropped from their ears suddenly. She sounded a hundred miles away, too slow to keep up with them. Zephyr started to feel very different. Small, a cold rain pelting their skin, heat pulsing down their neck and pooling at their chest.

A chorus of screaming, minutes of anguished moans, then an engulfing silence interspersed by the patter of raindrops.

“Hey!” Lisel’s voice cut through the vision sharply, pulling Zephyr back to the fire, the warm stone wall, and the Crow. Smoke poured from the fire, hitting Zephyr directly in the face. Normal campfire smoke. Any connection between the two was gone.

“I didn’t say you could read me.” Lisel scoffed accusingly, scooping up a pile of ash and pouring it over the fire defiantly, “That wasn’t part of the deal.”

More tense silence. Lisel shifted uncomfortably, huffing as she relit the fire in the dark. The flames returned and she was able to see Zephyr clearly again; although the echoes of bitterness, emptiness, and confusion that still lingered made her shiver.

Lisel searched them over, hoping to find something to say to cut the awkwardness and change the subject from what they’d both just seen. She cast her eyes on a purple bruise spotting the outside of their arm and leaped on the opportunity. Zephyr had gotten it a few days ago when Lisel had neglected to shield them in time, a somewhat common occurrence.

“Sorry about that, by the way.” She deflected as she pointed to the bruise, “That was my fault huh?”

Zephyr whirls in shock to stare at Kas. “You were?”

“I – I wasn’t –” Kas sputters, his skin turning the color of ripe tomatoes. “Auntie asked us to check on you!” he protests, but too late, there’s already a grin spreading across Zephyr’s face.

“You were!” Zephyr crows with delight, pointing. “You were worried –” he turns to Madge, wiping away a fake tear – “look, he actually cares, I’m so touched I could cry!” Madge just nods along. Isn’t it obvious?

“Was not!” Kas snaps, shoving past them to stomp back towards the main road.

Zephyr sprints after him, calling out: “You so were!”

“Not!”

“Were!”

“Shut up!”

“Kas Zayin cares about me!” Zephyr shouts to the sky, hands cupped around his mouth. He just barely manages to dodge a swipe from Kas, clutching his stomach all the while, bent over double from how hard he’s wheezing.

Madge stares at the two of them charging down the road, slip sliding in the half-frozen dirt, Kas chasing after Zephyr, and sighs, fisting her hands on her hips. “Honestly,” she mutters, shaking her head.

Her big brothers can be so silly sometimes.

As the grey clouds overhead part to let sunlight slice through – it seems it won’t be raining after all – she hurries after them with a call of “Wait up!”, cold hands shoved in her coat pockets, Zephyr’s gleeful laughter echoing through the midmorning air.

Merman

Azure is very protective of you, his human wife, you, and he doesn't like it when other humans or merfolk try to get close. 

He will wrap his tail around you, glare at the intruders, and growl softly to warn them off. 

Also marks you with his scent and bites, to show that you belong to him.

The merman is fascinated by your culture and customs, and he wants to learn everything about them. 

He asks you many questions, listen to your stories, and try to imitate your actions actions.

 He will also collect various human objects that he finds in the sea, and give them to you as gifts. 

Makes you drink a potion every week so you can breathe underwater.

He will be very proud and happy when you praise him for his efforts.

Azure is very affectionate and attentive, and he loves to pamper you.

By bringing you fresh fish, seaweed, and pearls, and make you a cozy nest in his underwater cave.

The merman prince massages you with his hands and tail, sing to you with his beautiful voice, and cuddle with you for hours. 

Will tell you how much he loves you, and how lucky he is to have you

The merman is very curious and adventurous, and he likes to explore the ocean with you.

 He will show you the wonders of the sea, such as coral reefs, sunken ships, and exotic creatures. 

Azure teaches you how to swim, breathe underwater, and communicate with marine animals.

Very protective of you during your journeys, and will  make sure that you are safe and comfortable.

He will be very upset if you ever him alone, or decide to go back to the surface world. 

In the end, he convinces you that the ocean is better than the land, and that he is the only one who can make you happy.

Vampire

Dracula is very cruel and sadistic, and he enjoys torturing you.

He will bite and scratch you with his sharp nails while being intamate with you.

The king of vampires will also force you to drink his blood, which will make you sick for days.

Might mock and humiliate you, just to try and break your spirit.

Your vampire husband is very arrogant and selfish, but he cares about your financial needs.

 Never ignores you nor neglect you, because you are always on his mind.

Will lock you up in his mansion, isolate you from the outside world, and monitor your every move. 

Using his powers to, he compels you with his mind, erase your memories, and manipulate your emotions. 

He will make you dependent on him and loyal to him.

Dracula is very dangerous and unpredictable, and he likes to play games with you. 

By challenging, testing and tricking you, He will never let you know what he is thinking or feeling, or what he is going to do next. 

He makes sure you fear him and crave him.

Faerie

Your husband, Zephyr, tricked you into marrying him, how? You may ask.

He simply told you his real name.

You see, the only ones who know Faeries's real names are their parents.

So, when a Faerie tells a human their name, it is like marriage in their world.

Yeah, that's how you ended up marrying your Faerie husband.

Zephyr kidnapped took you back with him to his realm to live in his home, which is now yours.

He is very romantic and loves to surprise you with little gifts and tokens of his affection. Zephyr often brings you flowers or other small trinkets that he has found on his travels.

However, he turns nasty when he is jealous, after all, faerie creatures are naturally born evil and deceiving.

So, when he sees some faeries bullying you for your appearance.

He murders them in the most vicious way right in front of your eyes.

Something which traumatized you.

The fact that he didn't get punished is because simply he is the Faerie's king nephew.

"Don't worry, my love, no one is going to ever make fun of your appearance again"

I just stumbled upon that again and pictured Viggo finding out and

Just...utterly flabbergasted, like... "right in the middle of our FEUD, Hiccup!?!????"

And he'd shortly think about kidnapping her and Astrid to have leverage against Hiccup but then again he's wayyy too practical for that - does he want to deal with a crying baby on top of this badass female warrior who he somehow has to keep contained while she's raging for her kid? Nope. It's beneath his genius and way too tiresome. Can anyone in his camp deal with a crying baby? Also nope. Is he gonna risk actually hurting the tiny stupid thing over Berk's wrath and the total impracticality of it all? Nah. So. Like.

Viggo takes one blink at that information and just. Is so badly insulted that he just turns around and leaves. No more worthy opponent. Hiccup, you didn't take the game seriously. How dare you introduce a BRAT as a player. Not fair. Not okay. That's just not. That's just not how this game is played, my man.

Because if a scrawny teenage boy and a badass axe warrior dared to have a child IN HIS FACE while they're actually trying to fight him to death - then that's. That's just. Hiccup must live in another galaxy. More deranged than Dagur himself. Hiccup just wrecked the game.

Let me tell you, that baby is the final boss and it'll make Viggo turn around and just go far away to fight someone else. Lol.

Imagine with me the game starts with a recreation of the Reverie from Vivi's flashback, so like 10 years pre series. We get through all the royals worried about Dragon, but after we get the part where Cobra humiliates Wapol it shifts to the Elder Stars giving more info about Dragon. His Revolution has been going on for 10 years and its starting to get serious, if they dont nip things in the bud now they're going to have a major problem on their hands. It's time to make taking out Dragon a true priority.

Smash cut to the character creator. Make your PC and chose your starting class, with different stats for what background you pick. The game starts on an island where you're just some dude, and as you start a few tutorial quests you're introduced to the three factions of the game: the marines, the revolution, and a local pirate crew. At the end of the tutorial you decide which you like best and join up. The marines with Cipher Pol have the best intel but least freedom when doing quests, pirates having the most freedom but least reputation with NPCs, and the Revolution is somewhere in the middle.

The main plot of the game is a treasure hunt. During Jaya, Bellamy mentioned several mythical treasures along the City of Gold, one being the Emerald City. This is where the journey leads, and it ends up being a cool underground city, the "Emerald" part being the giant gems and cryatals that decorate the city walls. Half the game is quests that get you there with plenty of weird One Piece goofiness on the side, half is a One Piece-style arc plot for once you arrive involving the people of the city going through some kind of crisis.

Canonically, Dragon was strapped for cash after starting his Revolution, which explains why that faction is treasure hunting. The pirate crew just wants treasure, and the marines are trying to stop them both. It's the same story told from very different POVs, with NPCs reacting differently based on who you are, and the quests having different outcomes, while still overlapping at key points. And of course certain loot and quests are locked depending on your route. Once you reach the Emerald City there's one chance to switch factions, but you'll have a hard time getting anyone to trust you if you do.

Your ending depends on what you do with the treasure once you get your hands on it. If you're a pirate, do you keep it for yourself and mutiny or be loyal to your captain? If you mutiny but don't take the time to gain the approval of the other officers you successfully steal the treasure but fail taking over the crew, and the game ends with you on the run from a powerful enemy.

For the Revolution, do you give it to Dragon, or another actor within the Revolution who wants a more extreme and violent fight against the WG, kind of like Zephyr from Film Z (if you want to bend canon you can just make it Zephyr from Film Z). Again, if you fail to adequately promote the extremist viewpoint and chose that option, you end up creating a schism within the RA, weakening it from within and making it easy pickings for the WG.

For the marines, do you do what the higher ups say and pursue Dragon and the RA at the cost of civilian lives? If you do, you're hailed as a hero of Absolute Justice and your career is launched into the stratosphere. If you chose the civilians you become known as a hero of the people, but work in relative obscurity as you'll never be promoted even as Garp saves your ass from further consequences. In this route, if you fail to help enough civilians access the game you end up court marshalled for your failure, Garp seeing you as too wishy washy in your Justice to be worth sticking his neck out for.

Like the previous scenario, there's enough canon characters from this time period to flesh out the roster, while also giving plenty of room for non canon NPCs and exploring some of the world and themes of One Piece on a deeper level. The "canon" ending would be Dragon getting the treasure to fund his Revolution on a massive scale, causing the Elder Stars to label him the most wanted man in the world, as he is in the manga.
