Agent of shield saison 1 épisode 1
Tumblr media

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 1 Episode 1
In Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D first episode, named “Pilot”, out on September 24th 2013 in the USA, the SHIELD, an anti-terrorist secret organization, form a team to apprehend Mike Peterson, a man with extraordinary physical abilities. Quickly, the crack team come across Centipede, a scientific organisation trying to recreate super soldiers. We find an important theme in the series : the heroes, the gods and the monsters.
The problem with the rather long introductions, it's the dynamism and the story. Most of the time, either we get bored, or the story is hurried, or worse: common. Fortunately, Joss Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, the scenarists, understood that. To fix it, they proposed us a well tied together plot with a complete narrative arc by making this episode's antagonist a man in reality good, only lost in his beliefs and crushed by the system. He’s “just a good guy who doesn't have luck”. Unlike what we could have believed watching the action following on as the minutes went on, the episode doesn't end with a fight, at least, it isn't physical. Agent C (to not spoil you this revelation) is talking to Mike in Union Station's gate. We are torn between the Agent C's sincerity and Mike's legit weariness, it's difficult to “choose a side” now, because the two men know how to move us in different ways. If in the rest of the episode, we were rather agreeing with Mike Peterson being the “enemy”, that he has become dangerous, and “unable to live in society” because of his instability, his speech wiped the state clean. In reality, his heart is pure, he only wishes to do good but as they say : the road to hell is paved with good intentions !
In this discussion, we don't find two men fighting each other but only desires. The desire to save for one, the desire to be who we really are for the other. Like Mike will precise, he doesn't want to be like the others, he only wants to do good and be known like he was promised.
“You said if we worked hard, if we did right, we'd have a place”. All his life, he has been forgotten. Even if he tried to prove himself, he wasn't given a chance and instead, everything was taken away from him : his wife, his job, his house
and even after that, he keeps hoping that one day, he will be seen for who he really is. “You said it would be enough to be a man. But there's better than that. There's gods, and the rest of us, what are we ? They're giants. We're what they step on.” Even if this sentence makes reference to the New York battle's events, I keep seeing other interpretations. Maybe it's because the character is an afro-descendant that I see, in his speech, an implicit message on racism and the conditions, unfortunately, they still live in. Otherwise, he can also allude to all the people having the same social status as him, defined as belonging to the “working class”, because they too get “stepped on” by “gods”, represented by the “powerfuls of this world”. Even if the problematic that this final scene broaches are generally enough to imply us and/or move us, this speech was sublimed by J. August Richards's performance. I will finish this part by the famous Agent C's citation : “Good, real heroes, it’s not what they have more than us that defines them, but what they do with it”. So I ask you, if you had lost everything like Mike Peterson, would you manage to be a hero?
When we want to make a detailed review on a work, we generally try to list the negative points then the positives ones or conversely to have a vague idea of what we want to say but I have to admit that finding unpleasant things was more difficult than I thought. If I had to cite them, it would maybe be the manichaeism of some characters (more like the exaggeration or the stereotype of certain characters as in the intelligent, the dark and mysterious guy
). Also, the episode thanks to a deus ex machina (an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation) but if, at the first viewing, it might look like a negative point, it doesn't seem that important because the relief is big. Indeed, the episode is a perfect blend of superheroes, action, humor, technology, investigation, suspense and emotion. The characters are endearing and create one of the biggest positives points of this series. It's easy, in my opinion, to identify to Skye. Like most of us, she spent hours looking for informations on the heroes she idolizes ; she was waiting in line in front of the Stark Tower to see Iron Man. If I was her, I think a lot of people would have done the same!
The characters' reactions are really humane, which makes our comprehension and identification easier. Through this show, we see the hidden reality behind the movies. After Avengers 1, Marvel showed the civilians’ reaction only a brief moment, but this episode shows that the superheroes’ arrival has more than ever changed their world. We see the alteration of the good feelings through the final scene. It's logical knowing that it's partly this scene that will make us, spectators, decide to continue the season's viewing, even the full series.
In one episode, the TV show succeeds to set the tone. It kind of has become the cement between the movies to strengthen the MCU's lore, even if unfortunately, at this time, the series is no longer canon. I can only recommend you to go watch this episode by yourself. To finish, here's a few anecdotes on this first episode : it turns out that “Pilot” was nominated two times ! First time for a Visual Effects Society prize thanks to the exceptional visual/special effects and the second time to the Golden Reel Award for the audio montage and the music.
We can also note that many things in this episode allude to the comics. First, Mike Peterson wishes to be a hero “like the comics of his childhood” then Skye, during her discussion with Mike, will pronounce “with great power comes
” I think you know the rest of this sentence 🙂.

Digma's preemptive observability engine cuts code issues, streamlines AI - AI News

Digma's preemptive observability engine cuts code issues, streamlines AI - AI News
Digma, a company offering products designed to act on pre-production observability data, has announced the launch of its preemptive observability analysis (POA) engine. The engine is designed to check, identify, and provide ‘fix’ suggestions, helping to balance systems and reduce issues found in codebases as their complexity increases.
The application of preemptive observability in pre-production may be more important as AI code generators become more common , the company claims. For instance, a 2023 Stanford University study revealed that developers using AI coding assistants were more likely to introduce bugs to their code. Despite this, major companies like Google are increasing their reliance on AI-generated code, with over 25% of the company’s new code being AI-created.
Nir Shafrir, CEO and Co-founder of Digma, commented on the growing resources that are being dedicated to ensuring systems perform well, saying, “We’re seeing a lot of effort invested in assuring optimal system performance, but many issues are still being discovered in complex code bases late in production.”
“Beyond this, scaling has often remained a rough estimation in organisations anticipating growth, and many are hitting barriers in technology growth that arise precisely during periods of significant organisational expansion. It means that engineering teams may spend between 20-40% of their time addressing issues discovered late in production environments, with some organisations spending up to 50% of engineering resources on fixing production problems.”
Preemptive observability is expected to become a key factor helping companies gain competitive advantage. It has several potential benefits for AI-generated code, including speed increases and improvements to the reliability of human-written code. According to Digma, preemptive observability helps ensure manually written code is more trustworthy, and reduces risk in the final product.
As well as tackling bugs introduced by AI code generation, Digma’s preemptive observability analysis engine has been designed to combat common, long-established issues companies may have experienced with human-made code, which may result in service level agreement (SLA) violations and performance issues. For high transactional establishments, like retail, fintech, and e-commerce, this technology could become valuable.
Digma’s algorithm has been designed to use pattern matching and anomaly detection techniques to analyse data and find specific behaviours or issues. It is capable of predicting what an application’s response times and resource usage should be, identifying possible issues before they can cause any noticeable damage. Digma specifically detects the part of the code that is causing an issue by analysing tracing data.
Preemptive observability analysis prevents problems rather than dealing with the aftermath of the issues. Teams can monitor holistically, and address potential issues in areas that are frequently ignored once in production.
Roni Dover, CTO and Co-founder of Digma, highlighted what differentiates Digma’s preemptive observability analysis engine from others: “By understanding runtime behaviour and suggesting fixes for performance issues, scaling problems, and team conflicts, we’re helping enterprises prevent problems and reduce risks proactively rather than putting out fires in production.”
Application performance monitoring (APM) tools are used to identify service issues, monitor production statuses, and highlight SLA errors. APMs are practical for sending alerts when services fail or slow during production. But unlike preemptive observability, APMs are limited in non-production settings, and can’t provide analysis of problems’ sources.
By identifying performance and scaling issues early on in the production process, even when data volumes are low, preemptive observability helps prevent major problems and reduce cloud costs.
Digma recently completed a successful $6 million seed funding round, indicating a growing confidence in the technology.
