i think one of the reasons miles is such good aromantic representation is that it happened organically. in a note (the acknowledgements?) at the end of cf aj white mentioned someone told him miles seemed aromantic and he worked it in. he didn’t build the character around aromanticism, he didn’t create the plot around it, he worked it into an existing plot. miles is not just an aromantic character, he’s also a 17 year old character and a freshly traumatized character and a character with a dog and so many other things. miles abernathy has a personality first and foremost, a life and a history. and then, he is aromantic.

"During an archaeological dig in a desert area north of Jerusalem 40 years ago, a seed was discovered which was determined to be in pristine condition but had obviously seen many a year.

Now, despite falling from its parent 1,000 years ago, it has grown into a mature tree, and botanists examining it believe it may be an extinct species that was used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years—even receiving a nod in the Bible.

Neither Israeli botanists, nor Dr. Sarah Sallon, a physician who founded the Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, could determine what species it was from simply from the seed covering. So they did what nature intended—they planted it.

Using a well-documented technique that saw 2,000-year-old date palm fruit pits germinate, Dr. Sallon soaked the seed in hormones, liquid fertilizer, and water, and then planted it in a pot of sterile seed; then waited.

Despite its genetic code being exposed to environmental stressors for over 1,000 years, the seed sprouted after 5 weeks. The shoot was protected by a caplike feature called an operculum. As the shoot grew, the operculum was shed—leaving something for the team to radiocarbon date. It narrowed down the age of the almost 10-centuries-old seed to between the years 993 an 1202.

Fast forward 14 years and the plant has become a 10-foot-tall tree. Dr. Sallon shared images of the tree, its bark, and its leaves with botanists around the world. One expert suggested it belonged to the genus Commiphora, found across the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Africa. A genetic analysis subsequently revealed this was the case, but a perfect match was lacking.

Dr. Sallon and her team thought it was an extinct species known from history as Judean Balsam, but the best way to confirm that suspicion would be to have some aromatic traces similar to the resins of the myrrh tree to which it is related. However, no such fragrant compounds were detected.

Instead, the chemical analysis of the leaves identified a group of phytochemicals known as guggulterols which have been observed in a related species called Commiphora wightii that’s known to possess certain cancer-fighting properties in its resin.

A medicinal balm, the origin of which is not known, is mentioned in multiple historical texts including the Bible as ‘tsori,’ and rather than the fragrant Judean Balsam, it’s this tsori that Dr. Sallon and her team believe they have found.

They must wait until the tree, now 14 years old, produces flower or fruit to know for sure if it’s an extinct species, and if so, how to perhaps keep it alive.

Dr. Louise Colville, senior research leader in seed and stress biology at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London who wasn’t involved in the research, told CNN that it was a major accomplishment to grow a seed that old and possibly lead to a resurrection of this Biblical botanical.

��What’s surprising in this story is it was just a single seed and to be able to have one chance for that to germinate is extremely lucky,” she said.

“Working in a seed bank, seeing the potential for that extreme longevity gives us hope that banking and storing seeds that some at least will survive for very long periods of time.”"

About 30 years ago, an American botanist dug into the mud of a dried-up lake in China and found 1,000-year-old lotus seeds. She studied them carefully and put them in a pot on her lab's windowsill. They sprouted a few weeks later. "That took no effort. I thought that if she could do it, so can we," says Dr. Sarah Sallon, a pediatrician at Hadassah Medical Center, where she founded the Natural Medicine Research Center 25 years ago. The lotus that flowered on that windowsill in the United States sent Sallon on a years-long journey of raising date palms based on 2,000-year-old seeds. She even ate the fruit and then carried on with her botanical detective thriller.

At the end of her quest she proposed a solution to intriguing historical questions: What are the biblical plants tsori and afarsimon? What links them? And where did they disappear to?

....The fact that the Commiphora that sprouted [from their 1,000-year-old seed] resembled varieties found in Madagascar, not far from Sheba, adds to the hope that maybe the small plant is the legendary afarsimon that vanished from history in the eighth century. But alas, the plant at Kibbutz Ketura produced no aroma.

"We waited several years hoping that as it grew it might become fragrant. And we also sent specimens to chemists at the University of Western Australia and the University of Strasbourg in France," Sallon says. "What they found were almost no compounds associated with fragrance but many very medicinal ones including those with anti-inflammatory compounds."

Sallon, therefore, has a few key questions about the afarsimon. How is it that a plant that thrived for 1,000 years on large farms at the Dead Sea vanished without a trace? How is it that no archaeological excavation in the region, from Qumran in the north to Masada in the south, has found any afarsimon seeds?

....Cautiously, Sallon proposed a hypothesis for all the mysteries. She believes that the plant she found is a Commiphora that grew naturally at the Dead Sea, and that it may be the healing tsori mentioned in the Bible and known since the time of the Patriarchs.... [and that] ancient farmers used it as the stock for the aromatic Commiphora – the legendary afarsimon. This grafting gave Judean farmers the ability to grow large afarsimon fields and become a perfume powerhouse. This solution solves all the mysteries: Grafted plants often don't bear seeds, so no afarsimon seeds have been found at archaeological digs.

This is so cool. I can't believe people are sprouting seeds from archaeological digs and bringing extinct species back to life to learn about!

And it's so appropriate that it's two of the oldest cultures in the world that are doing this. I can't wait to see what else people will sprout!

Food Myth: Roast your spices before using to 'Release the Flavor'

Truth: Dry Roasting your spices will CHANGE their flavor.

A raw sesame seed tastes different than a roasted sesame seed, just like a raw onion tastes different than a roasted or caramelized one.

There's chemical reactions happening in there. Aromatics aren't just released to be used, they're also broken down into OTHER flavor compounds.

Indian cooking exemplifies this: recipes will have WHOLE RAW spices, GROUND RAW spices, and ROASTED WHOLE spices. The same seed may be used in the recipe in 3 different states, and this is important because each different state will give your mouth a different interaction.

For example: Coriander (cilantro seed)

Raw coriander is floral and lemony. The roasted version is grassy and earthy - it's a totally different flavor!

A ground-up version will infuse the whole dish with an even flavor.

Leaving the seeds whole will impart the dish with some flavor and you get little bursts of intense flavor when your teeth crush a seed. Whether that's a burst of earthy or floral/lemony depends on if you roasted it or not.

Don't roast pre-powdered spices, because they burn easily and break down too fast.

BUT! You can Roast a seed first, and THEN grind it!

Round 3 - Reptilia - Opisthocomiformes

Our next order of birds is the Opisthocomiformes, of which one living family remains, Opisthocomidae, one living genus, Opisthocomus, and one living species: Opisthocomus hoazin, commonly called the “Hoatzin”.

The only living opisthocomiform, the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), lives in the Amazon and the Orinoco delta in South America. It has a long, rufous, erect crest on its head, a long tail, and an unfeathered blue face with maroon eyes. Hoatzins are herbivores, feeding on leaves, flowers and fruits. They are unique among birds for being foregut fermenters, having a large crop that uses bacteria to break down the leaves that they eat. Foregut fermentation is most common among mammals, typically ruminants, and the Hoatzin is the only bird known to digest its food this way. Their skeleton is highly modified to accommodate this large crop, and they are clumsy fliers. Hoatzins are noisy birds, and they make a variety of hoarse calls, including groans, croaks, hisses, and grunts. Like turacos, hoatzin chicks hatch with wing claws, but theirs are more developed than those of other birds. The chicks use their wing claws and their large feet to scramble around the tree branches.

Hoatzins are highly social, and are often found in groups of more than 40 birds, with up to 100 birds during the breeding season. They make a flat platform nest in a bush or tree above water, laying 2-3 eggs within it. The chicks can jump into the water below their nest, swimming with their wings and feet, if they need to escape a predator. They then use their wing claws to climb back to their nest. The chicks will leave the nest at about two to three weeks of age. The parent birds will continue to feed their young with semi-digested plant matter, stored in their crops, for the first four to five months of their life.

Opisthocomiformes evolved in the Late Eocene, around 36 million years ago, and possibly even earlier in the Late Cretaceous. While only one species survives today, there were once at least 4 other genera. The living genus, Opisthocomus, evolved in the Miocene.

As the Hoatzin is a foregut fermenter, the fermented foliage produces methane in its crop. The bird expels this methane through burping!

Because of the aromatic compounds in the leaves they consume, and the bacterial fermentation required to digest them, Hoatzins have a smelly, manure-like odor and are only hunted by humans for food in times of dire need. Local people also call it the "stinkbird".

Much of the Hoatzin’s diet, including various types of Monstera, Philodendron, and other aroids, contains a high concentration of calcium oxalate crystals, which even in small amounts can be greatly uncomfortable (and even dangerous) for humans to consume.

The Hoatzin is often compared to the Late Jurassic paravian, Archaeopteryx, and some early scientists even speculated that the Hoatzin was descended from it. However, it is now generally agreed upon that the young Hoatzin's claws evolved more recently, and may be a secondary adaptation due to its frequent need to climb into and out of the nest to avoid predators. The developmental genetics, or "blueprint", for wing claws is presumably still within the avian genome, as several other orders of birds have either retained them or re-evolved them. Hoatzins just needed to do more with theirs!
