Hello! Would you happen to have any recommendations for realistic anatomy books on humans (for art purposes)? A lot of the online anatomy references are very exaggerated and the models have only 'ideal' body types and don't depict any others (E.g. Online male anatomy references are extremely buff for no reason). Thank you for the help :)

I do have a small collection of anatomy-for-artists books, but honestly, those are also populated predominantly with people who look like living Greek sculptures. So, I asked around a bit for both book and online sources. Here are a few things:

Height Weight Chart -- A library that people have contributed multitudes of their own photos to. Some people took turnaround photos in form-fitting clothes. Some are just one-off snapshots of people in street clothes. But, both of those things can be useful in their own way, and there certainly are a lot of body types here. (Thanks for the link, Fable).

------------------------------------------------------ AdorkaStock -- Features a whole free pose gallery containing a really excellent array of varied bodies. The photos generally focus more on form than costume, and if anything, the extremely sculpted bodies you tend to see in other stock libraries are de-emphasized here.

Satine Zillah -- An expansive library of downloadable photo packs. Most of them feature athletic or thin body types, many are heavy on costuming, but there are some that focus on more variety if you take time to scroll through (elderly bodies, plus-size bodies, people with dwarfism, etc.)

Morpho -- I know a lot of people swear by these books by Michel Lauricella. Morpho: Fat and Skin Folds in particular seems to cover some ground that a lot of other anatomy/pose lessons just skip right over. Looks like it's available as an ebook too.

I hope that helps some! I'm sure there are other resources out there, though. If anyone has some solid recommendations, please leave them in the comments!

The Drake Spoiled Brat- Artist renders!!

Do know that these are limited to the options avaliable on Hero Forge, and some designs are based on pre made by other Hero Forge users. And while I might make some tweaks, consider these the "canon" renders I will be using for future posts involving them :)

Batman- I subscribe much harder to "Twunk" Bruce instead of Brick wall, so Batman (whilst still a very imposing figure) is more lean and muscular like a fighter

Black Bat- Cass, sweet darling baby girl. She is 99% shadow, but her "normal" non stealth mission costume has dark yellow. Her hood she made herself and despite replacing the rest of her uniform, she keeps the hood.

Bluejay- AKA Jason, Despite not having his full Daddy issues arc into Red Hood. Jason is still a very punk kid, and that shows in Bluejay where his helm (while normally the mouth section popping off to resemble Batman) he loves the padding and sections alongside his trusty bat.

Nightwing- Out of the whole family shows off the most of "himself" but of course, anyone tries to say hes Nightwing he will drop the "Are you racist"? Card and basically denies Bruce any other argument. Escrima sticks also function as light sticks.

Robin- VERY reminiscent of the outfits he was used to whilst training, Bruce and Dick both gave him full rein as long as he stuck to the colors, which after a while he didn't mind. The sword was a non negotioable though (even if slightly dulled)

Spoiler- Despite having become Robin during Jasons recovery, when Damien arrived early- she was quick to step back into what was comfortable. That being a classic clad purple preference.

Oh and fun fact, Cardinals design has inspo from ALL of his siblings masks in making his new form- can you see them all?

Photo Ref

In late summer I had my son take some reference photos for me for possible artwork. K dressed up in a quasi-historical costume, we took a bow and a fake flute, and off we went. It took him until this week to actually give me the photos, but I'm delighted to have them and looking forward to painting or drawing from them.

These are greatly reduced in size to post here - the originals are crisp and clear. He was paying more attention than I was, and managed to get a shot with the bow that includes a reflection in the water. So cool!

Also, these big, impressive guys were nearby. !!

Art printing tips for beginners

Make your canvas size the largest you think you'll print (if you're using raster, meaning pixels compared to vector). Scaling down is easy. Scaling up is much harder without losing quality.

Use at least 300 ppi (pixels per inch) for all art. I do this with art I don't plan to print just in case I want to in the future.

Use CMYK color mode when you send your files to the printer. Bright colors are going to be dulled if you're using basic CMYK.

The white in your art is only going to be as white as the paper you print on. White ink is not common in basic CMYK printing.

Paper can make a good project 20x better. Never underestimate the power of choosing the right paper for your prints.

DO TEST PRINTS!!!! (especially if you're printing a large batch)

Printing itself is an art form and it can take practice and effort to master it.

Attempting to Understand Dogs

After completing the 3D model of dog anatomy, I wanted to understand how those structures showed through on the surface. It's one thing to know the names and places of muscle and bone, but another matter entirely to recognize them through skin and fur. To try it out, I attempted to trace the musculature over photos of dogs. Turns out this is really, really hard. For starters, most dogs do not have clearly defined muscles; I had to go with ripped bully breeds and ultra-lean sight hounds to find more than a few visual markers. Second, you have to consider deep muscles because they impact form--sometimes more than the surface muscles! That definitely bent my brain. I think I've figured out torsos and hips, but shoulders and necks still confuse the hell out of me.
