6th February >> Mass Readings (USA)
Saints Paul Miki and his Companions, Martyrs
on
Tuesday, Fifth Week in Ordinary Time.
Tuesday, Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Red: B (2))
(Readings for the feria (Tuesday))
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Tuesday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30 You have said: My name shall be there, to hear the prayers of your people Israel.
Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of the whole community of Israel, and stretching forth his hands toward heaven, he said, “LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below; you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants who are faithful to you with their whole heart. “Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth? If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you, how much less this temple which I have built! Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God, and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your servant, utter before you this day. May your eyes watch night and day over this temple, the place where you have decreed you shall be honored; may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer in this place. Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel which they offer in this place. Listen from your heavenly dwelling and grant pardon.”
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 84:3, 4, 5 and 10, 11
R/ How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the LORD. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
R/ How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest in which she puts her young— Your altars, O LORD of hosts, my king and my God!
R/ How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Blessed they who dwell in your house! continually they praise you. O God, behold our shield, and look upon the face of your anointed.
R/ How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
I had rather one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
R/ How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Gospel Acclamation Psalm 119:36, 29b
Alleluia, alleluia. Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees; and favor me with your law. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Mark 7:1-13 You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.
When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. (For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.) So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.
You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He went on to say, “How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother, and Whoever curses father or mother shall die. Yet you say, ‘If someone says to father or mother, “Any support you might have had from me is qorban”’ (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saints Paul Miki and his Companions, Martyrs
(Liturgical Colour: Red: B (2))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Tuesday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading Galatians 2:19-20 I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me.
Brothers and sisters: Through the law I died to the law, that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 126:1bc-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6
R/ Those who sow in tears, shall reap rejoicing.
When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing.
R/ Those who sow in tears, shall reap rejoicing.
Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed.
R/ Those who sow in tears, shall reap rejoicing.
Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.
R/ Those who sow in tears, shall reap rejoicing.
Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves.
R/ Those who sow in tears, shall reap rejoicing.
Gospel Acclamation Matthew 28:19a, 20b
Alleluia, alleluia. Go and teach all nations, says the Lord; I am with you always, until the end of the world. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 Go and teach all nations.
The Eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

One oddball here. This Bell Atlanta-built B-29B (44-84121) was modified during the late-1940s for tests involving the “Stratovision” airborne television project developed jointly by Westinghouse Electric Co. and the Glenn L. Martin Co. With a operational level of 30000 feet that huge antenna beneath the aircraft had more than necessary clearance; it folded back for landings and take-offs.
Stratovision was a system to rebroadcast TV and FM radio signals via transmitters mounted on airplanes. Westinghouse radar engineer Charles E. Nobles invented the technology to bring media to "small town and farm homes" that he believed terrestrial transmitters atop city buildings couldn't reach. The idea was first proposed in 1944, and by September 1946 engineers had a workable design. An airplane flying at 30,000 feet would relay signals originated on the ground. A fleet of fourteen planes, if deployed properly, could bring television to 78 percent of the country's population, including many in isolated rural homes. The Glenn L. Martin Company offered a B-29 Superfortress with a pressurized cabin for testing. On June 23, 1948, the B-29, orbiting 25,000 feet above Pittsburgh, rebroadcast the Republican convention directly from WMAR-TV in Baltimore, 9 to 10 p.m. EDT. The bomber was outfitted with an eight-foot mast on its vertical stabilizer to receive programs; the signal was sent from the antenna to the cabin, and on to the broadcast antenna. The antenna, stored horizontally in the bomb bay, projected 28 feet down when operating. In 1949, AT&T set up a coaxial cable network to connect the East Coast with the Midwest, largely through underground wiring. This network, along with the rapid spread of conventional TV stations across the country, made Stratovision obsolete. Westinghouse dropped Stratovision in 1950. The idea of airborne television transmitters didn't die with Stratovision, however. In 1959, MPATI (Midwest Program on Airborne Television Instruction) was launched. Using two DC-6 planes, educational television was broadcast to the midwest.
The Stratovision was an impressive technology and a creative application of what was then cutting edge technology to solve an intractable problem. By the time Stratovision was ready the commercial and technological forces that inspired the invention had shifted. It was launched into a completely different environment than it was conceived it, and sadly didn’t have a chance to compete. Ultimately, even if it had come out the impending arrival of satellites would have cut its lifespan short.

B-29 (TB) Stratofortress "Lucky Lady" 44-84076 by Kelly Michals Via Flickr: Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum Specifications Aircraft Type: B-29(TB) Boeing (Bell) Super Fortress, S/N 44-84076 Mission: Heavy Bomber Number Built: The Army Air Force accepted a grand total of 3,960 B-29s: 3,943 B-29s, 3 XB-29s (including the experimental plane which crashed before delivery), and 14 B-29 prototypes. Actually, B-29, B-29As, and B-29Bs made up the production total. The B-29 and B-29A were alike and barely differed from the B-29B. The B-model was about 2,000 pounds lighter than the A, had an extra 150 feet in service ceiling, and a slightly longer range. Powerplant Four supercharged Wright R-3550-W57 Double Cyclone radial, air-cooled engines; 2,200 horsepower each. Weight: Maximum 133,500 lbs. Dimensions Wingspan 141’3″ Length 99 Height 27’9″ Performance Maximum speed 357 MPH Cruising speed 220 MPH Range 3,700 miles Service Ceiling 33,600 feet The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the most advanced bomber aircraft to see operation service in World War II. The Army Air Force used it in low-level, night incendiary attacks against Japan. The aircraft also successfully aerial-mined the waters surrounding the Japanese mainland during WWII. The Enola Gay, arguably the most famous B-29, dropped the world’s first nuclear bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, 1945 another B-29 named Bockscar dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. When SAC was established in 1946 it exclusively used B-29s. They were used in the conventional bombing role during the Korean War (1950-1953). B-29s flew their final bomber mission in 1954 , thereafter serving SAC in specialized roles such as reconnaissance and as tanker aircraft. The Museum’s B-29 was manufactured by Bell Aircraft, in Marietta, Georgia and delivered to the USAAF on August 4, 1945.

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Sat June 15th, 2024 ... Saturday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
__________
1 Kgs 19:19-21
Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat,
as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen;
he was following the twelfth.
Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him.
Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said,
"Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,
and I will follow you."
Elijah answered, "Go back!
Have I done anything to you?"
Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them;
he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh,
and gave it to his people to eat.
Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.
Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 16:1b-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10
R. (see 5a) You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, "My Lord are you."
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

Ps 119:36a, 29b
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees;

Gospel
________
Mt 5:33-37
Jesus said to his disciples:
"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,
Do not take a false oath,
but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
But I say to you, do not swear at all;
not by heaven, for it is God's throne;
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;
nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
Do not swear by your head,
for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.'
Anything more is from the Evil One."
***
FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
Most of us have not, and will not, have a mantel or cloak of authority abruptly placed upon our shoulders. We ordinarily are not suddenly presented with our destiny, or called upon to drop what we are doing to make a drastic career change. We most often incrementally move toward a vocation, a calling, without a dramatic all-or-nothing episode. We most often have choices. We may even have the time to pray and reflect on the course of our lives, but we do need to be open to the times that God is calling us to serve Him. “I am here, Lord, is most often the best response.
Today’s first reading (I Kings 19:19-21) may summon for many of us memories of our “could-have-been, and wanted-to-but-did not moments. So many opportunities present themselves in everyone’s life that most go unnoticed or ignored. Elisha (prophet-elect), rather than letting his calling pass, decided to trust, drop everything, and follow Elijah and, therefore, to serve God.
Elisha was, apparently, a happy, hard-working, wealthy young man. He is presented to us as he and his workers plow with 24 oxen and 12 plows. He clearly had a future, security, and family support. This unexpectedly changed when the aging prophet Elijah found Elisha and put a cloak on the young man. Elisha knew that this gesture symbolized that he was being asked to be Elijah’s apprentice, and eventual replacement. He would be God’s messenger to His people. Elisha’s only request was to kiss his parents goodbye. The slaughter of his oxen, which he cooked over a fire, and fed to the workers, showed that Elisha had completely prepared to leave his former life behind. He gave himself fully and quickly to his new life. The image of Elisha’s openness and willingness to leave his home and family to lead a religious life is echoed in the New Testament. I especially think of Elisha when I read about the call of the Apostles by Jesus. They too dropped what they were doing and followed The Lord. If we are open to God, His constant presence and voice invite us and lead us toward Him. We do not necessarily need a life-altering tear in the fabric of family, work, and friends like Elisha and the Apostles experienced.
Most of us do not proclaim public, formal, Holy-Orders-like, surrender of ourselves to God. We all can, however, choose to live in a way that is God-centered, offering our daily efforts in praise of Him, and as an exemplar of faithfulness to those who surround us. We may promise or take oaths vows to praise God and to follow His will as we understand it. Jesus, in today’s gospel reading, warns us: “Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow... Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. Anything more is from the evil one.” I hope that I can live up to this short, wonderful, and wise Gospel. It is the core of what we need in our complex world. I want to say “yes” to God’s will and mean "yes.”

SAINT OF THE DAY
Saint Marguerite d'Youville
(October 15, 1701 – December 23, 1771)
Saint Marguerite d’Youville’s Story
We learn compassion from allowing our lives to be influenced by compassionate people, by seeing life from their perspectives, and reconsidering our own values.
Born in Varennes, Canada, Marie Marguerite Dufrost de Lajemmerais had to interrupt her schooling at the age of 12 to help her widowed mother. Eight years later she married François d’Youville; they had six children, four of whom died young. Despite the fact that her husband gambled, sold liquor illegally to Native Americans, and treated her indifferently, she cared for him compassionately until his death in 1730.
Even though she was caring for two small children and running a store to help pay off her husband’s debts, Marguerite still helped the poor. Once her children were grown, she and several companions rescued a Quebec hospital that was in danger of failing. She called her community the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal; the people called them the “Grey Nuns” because of the color of their habits. In time, a proverb arose among the poor people of Montreal, “Go to the Grey Nuns; they never refuse to serve.” In time, five other religious communities traced their roots to the Grey Nuns.
The General Hospital in Montreal became known as the Hôtel Dieu (House of God) and set a standard for medical care and Christian compassion. When the hospital was destroyed by fire in 1766, Mère Marguerite knelt in the ashes, led the Te Deum—a hymn to God’s providence in all circumstances—and began the rebuilding process. She fought the attempts of government officials to restrain her charity, and established the first foundling home in North America.
Pope Saint John XXIII, who beatified Mère Marguerite in 1959, called her the “Mother of Universal Charity.” She was canonized in 1990, and her liturgical feast is celebrated on October 16.
Reflection
__________
Saints deal with plenty of discouragement, plenty of reasons to say, “Life isn’t fair” and wonder where God is in the rubble of their lives. We honor saints like Marguerite because they show us that with God’s grace and our cooperation, suffering can lead to compassion rather than bitterness.

Boeing B-29B-60-BA Superfortress "Pacusan Dreamboat" (SN 44-84061) of the 16th Bombardment Group. "On October 4-6, 1946, this B-29 with Colonel Irvine and his crew made an unrefueled non-stop 9,500-mile flight from Honolulu to Cairo, Egypt, over the Arctic regions in 39 hours, 36 minutes. Saturday memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Saturday, Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Green. Year: B(II))
First Reading 1 Kings 19:19-21 Then Elisha left and followed Elijah.
Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! Have I done anything to you?” Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 16:1b-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.” O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices, my body, too, abides in confidence; Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world, nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
R/ You are my inheritance, O Lord.
Gospel Acclamation Psalm 119:36a, 29b
Alleluia, alleluia. Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees; and favor me with your law. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 5:33-37 I say to you, do not swear at all.
Jesus said to his disciples: “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the Evil One.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saturday memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary
(Liturgical Colour: White. Year: B(II))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Saturday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
Either:
First Reading Genesis 3:9-15, 20 I will put enmity between your offspring and the offspring of the woman.
After the man, Adam, had eaten of the tree, the LORD God called to the man and asked him, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!” The man replied, “The woman whom you put here with me– she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.” The LORD God then asked the woman, “Why did you do such a thing?” The woman answered, “The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.” Then the LORD God said to the serpent:
“Because you have done this, you shall be banned from all the animals and from all the wild creatures; On your belly shall you crawl, and dirt shall you eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.”
The man called his wife Eve, because she became the mother of all the living.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
OR: --------
First reading Genesis 12:1-7 The Lord spoke to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants for ever (Luke 1:55).
The LORD said to Abram: “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you.
”I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you.”
Abram went as the LORD directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai, his brother’s son Lot, all the possessions that they had accumulated, and the persons they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land as far as the sacred place at Shechem, by the terebinth of Moreh. (The Canaanites were then in the land.) The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.
OR: --------
First reading 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-11, 16 The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father (Luke 1:32).
When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!” Nathan answered the king, “Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.” But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said: “Go tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in?’ “‘It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.’”
OR: --------
First reading 1 Chronicles 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2 They brought in the ark of God and set it within the tent which David had pitched for it.
David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the LORD to the place which he had prepared for it. David also called together the sons of Aaron and the Levites. The Levites bore the ark of God on their shoulders with poles, as Moses had ordained according to the word of the LORD. David commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brethren as chanters, to play on musical instruments, harps, lyres, and cymbals to make a loud sound of rejoicing. They brought in the ark of God and set it within the tent which David had pitched for it. Then they offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings to God. When David had finished offering up the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.
OR: --------
First reading Proverbs 8:22-31 Mary, seat of Wisdom.
The Wisdom of God says:
“The LORD begot me, the first-born of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago; From of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains or springs of water; Before the mountains were settled into place, before the hills, I was brought forth; While as yet the earth and fields were not made, nor the first clods of the world.
“When he established the heavens I was there, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; When he made firm the skies above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; When he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command; Then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, Playing before him all the while, playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the sons of men.”
OR: --------
First reading Sirach 24:1-2, 3-4, 8-12, 18-21 Mary, seat of Wisdom.
Wisdom sings her own praises and is honored in God, before her own people she proclaims her glory; In the assembly of the Most High she opens her mouth, in the presence of his power she declares her worth.
“From the mouth of the Most High I came forth the first-born before all creatures. I made that in the heavens there should arise light that never fades and mistlike covered the earth. In the highest heavens did I dwell, my throne on a pillar of cloud.
“Then the Creator of all gave me his command, and he who formed me chose the spot for my tent, Saying, ‘In Jacob make your dwelling, in Israel your inheritance and among my chosen put down your roots.’ Before all ages, in the beginning, he created me, and through all ages I shall not cease to be. In the holy tent I ministered before him, and in Zion I fixed my abode. Thus in the chosen city he has given me rest, in Jerusalem is my domain. I have struck root among the glorious people, in the portion of the LORD, his heritage and in the company of the holy ones do I linger.
“Come to me, all you that yearn for me, and be filled with my fruits; You will remember me as sweeter than honey, better to have than the honeycomb my memory is unto everlasting generations. Whoever eats of me will hunger still, whoever drinks of me will thirst for more; Whoever obeys me will not be put to shame, whoever serves me will never fail.”
OR: --------
First reading Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10 The virgin shall conceive and bear a son.
The LORD spoke to Ahaz: Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!” Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel which means “God is with us.”
OR: --------
First reading Isaiah 9:1-6 A son is given us.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, As they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, And the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian. For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames.
For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, From David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains By judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!
OR: --------
First reading Isaiah 61:9-11 I rejoice heartily in the Lord.
Thus says the LORD:
Their descendants shall be renowned among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; All who see them shall acknowledge them as a race the LORD has blessed.
I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; For he has clothed me with a robe of salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, Like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, So will the Lord GOD make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.
OR: --------
First reading Micah 5:1-4a Until the time when she who is to give birth has borne.
The LORD says:
You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. (Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne, And the rest of his brethren shall return to the children of Israel.) He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his God; And they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace.
OR: --------
First reading Zechariah 2:14-17 Rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming.
Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the LORD. Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they shall be his people, and he will dwell among you, and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. The LORD will possess Judah as his portion in the holy land, and he will again choose Jerusalem. Silence, all mankind, in the presence of the LORD! for he stirs forth from his holy dwelling.
Responsorial Psalm 1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd
My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“My heart exults in the LORD, my horn is exalted in my God. I have swallowed up my enemies; I rejoice in my victory.”
My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The bows of the mighty are broken, while the tottering gird on strength. The well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry batten on spoil. The barren wife bears seven sons, while the mother of many languishes.”
My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“The LORD puts to death and gives life; he casts down to the nether world; he raises up again. The LORD makes poor and makes rich, he humbles, he also exalts.”
My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.
“He raises the needy from the dust; from the dung heap he lifts up the poor, To seat them with nobles and make a glorious throne their heritage.”
My heart exults in the Lord, my Savior.

Gospel Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23 For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.”

R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

USAF A-10 pilots train FAB pilots in the Tápio Exercise
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/17/2022 - 12:00 in the Brazilian Air Force, Military
U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Griffin, A-10C Thunderbolt II pilot assigned to the 104th Fighter Squadron, Maryland National Air Guard, with a Brazilian Air Force pilot during Exercise Tapio in Campo Grande, Brazil, August 24, 2022.
A-10C pilots of the 104th Fighter Squadron, of the Maryland National Air Guard, recently traveled to the Campo Grande Air Base, in the largest city in Mato Grosso do Sul, to help the New York National Air Guard (NYANG) train with its partner, Brazil and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
Exercise Tápio is a Brazilian search and rescue exercise in combat and approximate air support that ran until August 31.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Griffin and Major Eric Calvey, both A-10C Thunderbolt II pilots assigned to the 104th Fighter Squadron, traveled to Brazil to train with FAB A-1 and A-29 pilots.

"Our role was to focus on helping Brazilian pilots with the tactical aspects of approximate air support and search and rescue in combat," Griffin said. "We were not only flying with them in the back seat of their aircraft, but we also informed and trained them. When we had a day without flights, we were in the classroom teaching academics."

This year marks the second time NYANG participated in the exercise, while only the first for Maryland fighter pilots.

"We worked a lot with the 106th Rescue Wing on Long Island, and the Brazilian Air Force requested that the A-10 pilots go to Brazil and teach what they know," Griffin said. "As we had this continuous relationship already built with the ANG of New York, we were very excited to help and lend our experience."
The State Partnership Program has been successfully building mutually beneficial relationships for almost 30 years and includes 85 partnerships with 93 nations. All 54 state and territorial National Guards participate in the program.

“This is a perfect example of how versatile the State Partnership Program can be,” said U.S. Army Major Harrison Bittenbender, director of the Maryland National Guard State Partnership Program. "In this situation, the New York National Guard did not have a specific unit or resource, so they sought our help. It was a great opportunity for us to export our experience to a new command of fighters and show, when necessary, that the National Guard will find where there is capacity among the 54 units to help our international partners."
The bilateral exchange of information allowed Griffin and Calvey to see what obstacles Brazilian pilots have to overcome, provide insights and discuss the differences in aircraft, equipment and training.

"They have some unique equipment challenges when it comes to combat search and rescue, so they have different ways of doing the job. Therefore, it is a challenge, but also a great learning opportunity for us," Griffin said. "I think [the Brazilian Air Force] took many different techniques that we provide, so there was definitely great training happening in both directions."
The Tapio exercise, which involved more than 1,000 Brazilian forces and their aircraft, as well as 100 U.S. Air Force aviators, one HC-130J Combat King II aircraft, three HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and two C-17 Globemaster II aircraft, led the operations to increase the collective capacity to face complex global challenges, combat threats and maintain regional security and stability

The New York National Guard has been a partner of Brazil through the State Partnership Program of the Department of the National Guard of the Department of Defense since 2019.
