SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING BLUE, SOMETHING NEW

Two new horses has arrived at Black Onyx Equestrian today! First one is our new boarder, which coincidently also is a woman from our staff, Nicolette Anderson. The new horse is her own private horse, recently bought from Patchwork Rescue Farm before it closed down. Her name is Solvei, and she is an Iceland Horse.

As the horse already know some of our other boarders (Old Man and PRF Patches) I predict it to be easy to make her a part of the boarding herd.

The other horse that has arrived is a still young gelding with the name of BOE Kismet's Keener. He is an offspring of ours from years ago. As Luna BlueLake couldn't keep him anymore due to downsizing - and she has been his owner since he was a foal - we accepted to take him back to our stable.

Sunny was the first one to meet him. She is also the gelding's mother. As they met they seemed to kinda recognize each other. I am looking forward to let our other Shetlandspony, Kaki Golden, into the pasture too. But even if he is the sire of Keener, he is so very spicy, and not easy to introduce to new pasture mates, so that will be a job for later.

Under black skies: Please be advised - if you want to shoot planes at MIA in sunny conditions, ideally under a pure blue sky, go there in January or February. But certainly avoid late summer and fall when the Hurricane season dominates the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Although the end of the Hurricane season was near, late November 1992 provided for an abundant amount of moisture-laden clouds over Florida. It was typcailly only for two small windows after sunrise and before sunset that the sun would break through for some 30 or 45 minutes, and that was when some really nice photo opportunities materialised. The rest of the day was mostly spent in the parked car, listening to the downpour on the roof and guessing the schemes of the aircraft flying overhead.

A day has passed since I answered this, so obviously the answer is different now. It's sunny and warm so I've been listening to 'Teenage FBI' by Harrison Boe all day, it's a lot of fun and really good happy mood song.

Oh most likely 'Lion' by Saint Mesa. It's so epic. Also Prokofievs 'Dance of the knights' from the Romeo anf Juliet Ballet is sn excellent choice to slay some enemies, especially in s mind game slay way.

26. A song that reminds you of your favorite fictional character

The song 'Daniel in the Den' always reminds me of Levi from aot and basically everything that happened to him snd continues to happen to him. I think it's a really powerful song for him.

38. A song that you think is underrated

So many, but I often find it difficult to say underrated for what purpose or in which circles. But I think 'Epiphany' by Taylor Swift is criminally underrated in comparison to the other folklore songs. I think it's so beautiful (it's also a great Sam/Jack song, if you ask me), so yeah I really like it.

Nice Mon 23 Jun Day 1

The Qatar Airways flights were OK, food was good. The old lady next to me with the flying elbows had no sense of the territorial boundary separating us. The passenger behind could not seat/unseat herself without violently yanking the back of my seat. The usual niggles. On the second leg Doha to Nice a couple of dills opened their window shutters during a daylight flight where the cabin was meant to be dark. It’s like a welding flash in the cabin. Nobody but me protests, and the cabin crew won’t enforce the blackout. You can forget about watching a movie if the window passenger in your row needs daylight to read his phone.

Airbus and Boeing could make the inner pane of the passenger windows out of that LCD glass (polypropylene, whatever) that goes black at the flick of a switch. The cabin crew could black them all out at some appropriate point in the flight and clear them (gradually) as the landing descent begins.

No other problems. The Orange France SIM came to life with a burst of welcoming texts. A €7 day pass got me here from the airport on the tram, and I just finished a beer in a beachfront bar. “Je voudrais une biere, Veritable, cinq cent” worked quite well.

It’s hot, sunny, 30° and humid. I’m in shorts and sandals. I don’t think I’ll be wearing jeans very much this trip.

Then my phone battery went flat. I had physical cards to pay for dinner, but the Wise card needed a pin that was in my dead phone. The Bank Australia debit card worked OK. You always need a backup. I’ll be sure to keep the power pack with me in future.

I pick up the car back at the airport tomorrow morning.

TIME FOR RETIREMENT!

Quite a few of our horses has been retired from shows this month, staring with BOE Mexico Nightmare. This prima Oldenburg mare has been doing quite well in Show Jumping, and also fine in Dressage too. With 42 points in Show Jumping T-Shows. 43 points in Show Jumping, 48 points in Dressage and 65 points in Sportshorse in R-Shows - she has definitely earned her retirement!

The best children's pony in the world has also reached retirement age! BOE Sunny Day aka. Sunny has been the first pony for almost all of our children, and has taught them to ride and love horses. She has been competing in Pony (181 points), Pony Show Jumping (186 points) and Driving (190 points) with the kids, and has had a lot of fun!

With her she takes the titles of The Golden Pony, Nuage and Tandem Champion.

Opaline HF aka. Libby has also earned her retirement! With an overall of 383 points in R-Shows you can say she has done really good. She has competed in Sportshorse (146 points), Show Jumping (142 points) and Dressage (95 points), giving a total of 8 bonus points off to her offsprings!

She has done a lot of good in her time as a show horse (with titles of Supreme Champion, Volant and L'Étoile), and will hopefully enjoy her retirement. Thank you for selling her to us Ian Salvatore!

RRS Caspian has been a personal favorite of mine for sooo long! He has done a lot of good with an overall score of 451 points across disciplines such as Sportshorse (132 points), Show Jumping (172 points) and Dressage (147 points). He has earned the titles of Supreme Champion, Nuage and Danzatore through his career as a show horse.

BOE Rolly Joger aka. Sandokan has been a good boy, definitely deserving his retirement at 403 points across the disciplines. Seeing him compete in Show Jumping (151 points) with Narcisa Foremann has been one of the biggest pleasures in my life. He definitely takes after his sire BOE Sailor Moon, and has done a great job at every show!

Dressage (137 points) wasn't what he enjoyed the most, but he did well there too along with the halter shows for Sportshorses (115 points).

Retirering GE Rosebank was harder than I had thought possible. She is such a good mare, her rider Vigga Hertz can only agree with that, and we are happy to now have an offspring of hers, who can take over after her.

Whether in Sportshorse (181 points), Show Jumping (146 points) or Dressage (170 points) she always did her best. She is such a prima mare of the Hanoverians, and we will probably never get a mare like her again.

BOE Ladykiller shouldn't have been retired this early. Shouldn't have been dead either. Yet he hurt himself so badly at a show that he had to be put down.

He earned himself a few points throughout his lifetime: Turkoman (41 points), Show Jumping (57 points) and Dressage (52 points) - and will give his skills to his sons in hopes that they will remember him, and have the same skill as him in shows.

That was all the horses retired this month!

Boeing’s Starliner Capsule Set for Maiden Manned Mission to Space Station

Boeing’s eagerly anticipated Starliner spacecraft is gearing up for its much-awaited first crewed test flight to the International Space Station (ISS).

After a series of setbacks and delays, the gumdrop-shaped CST-100 Starliner is finally ready to embark on this historic mission, set to redefine the future of space exploration.

Scheduled for liftoff at 10:34 p.m. (0234 GMT on Tuesday) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Starliner will ride atop an Atlas V rocket provided by the Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture United Launch Alliance (ULA). With seasoned NASA astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Sunni” Williams on board, the capsule holds the promise of unlocking new frontiers in space travel.

Wilmore, a retired U.S. Navy captain, and Williams, a former Navy aviator and test pilot, boast an impressive combined record of 500 days in space. As the designated commander and pilot respectively, they bring a wealth of experience to this groundbreaking mission.

Despite being designed for autonomous flight, the crew retains the capability to assume manual control if required. The test flight mandates Wilmore and Williams to practice maneuvering the spacecraft manually, ensuring preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances.

Upon successful liftoff, the Starliner is expected to rendezvous with the ISS after approximately 26 hours, docking with the orbiting laboratory some 250 miles (400 km) above Earth. Wilmore and Williams will spend about a week conducting experiments and research aboard the ISS before returning to Earth.

Did anyone say Tipping Point?

Living in the south of Spain, there is no shortage of evidence that the climate is going bonkers. We are sliding towards a worst-case scenario of quickly rising temperatures. Every morning seems to bring warnings of heat waves and of dwindling water reserves. Every morning an inimical sun rises above the rooftops to the east, forcing me to quickly lower the blinds, close the windows and turn on the aircon. Then I read that it is not much better elsewhere in Europe's 'sunny south'.

Two small, anecdotal stories gleaned from the news makes me think humanity is not likely to pull out of the climate crisis intact.

The first story is about household appliances in Africa which I read about in Le Monde. The article dealt with the popularity of large, American-style refrigerators, the stainless steel models with opposing twin doors and a built-in dispenser of ice cubes. Needless to say they use a lot of power which is in short supply in many African countries. But ice dispensers, it would appear, are what people want - it makes sense in this unrelenting heat, doesn't it? And damn the consequences. In the grand picture of global energy waste, it is probably insignificant but it illustrates what the world is up against.

The second bit of evidence is graphic, a screenshot of worldwide air traffic on a recent day (above). It represents some 20,000 commercial flights in the air at the same time. With a few exceptions, like northern Siberia and Greenland, or the Tibetan Plateau, or the central Sahara, planes are criss crossing every inhabited continent. They never stop. And air travel is expected to keep growing fast as income rises in countries like India. Right now, Airbus and Boeing are struggling to keep up with an avalanche of orders for new planes.

I can observe this happening close to home. At the beginning of the summer season, the airport of Málaga, in essence a regional airport rather than a hub, registered 545 flights in a single day. The vast majority were  being operated with Airbus 320 or Boeing 737 planes. As each aircraft carries some 200 people, that adds up to about 100,000 arrivals and departures in a single day. Very few of those visitors have a reason for coming to Málaga other than leisure. Many come to party and get drunk on beer that is still cheaper than in Copenhagen, Manchester or Vienna.

Clearly, there is still disposable income out there, or credit. And limited concern about the climate, unless people have somehow internalized the inevitable and just want to go out in a blaze of happy hedonism.

I do not wish to add to the current obsession with ‘frivolous’ air travel when other, less visible activities contribute in equal measure to global warming, beginning with the data centres and server farms that bring us billions of useless videos and messages all day.

The list of unreformed greenhouse gas emitters is endless, from cruise travel to container shipping to IKEA, or Tesla, or the construction industry, or industrial farming and fishing, they are all taking us over the edge.

I guess someone could generate a world map of people shopping at IKEA at any given time, or sending TikTok videos. It would balance the map of the evil air traffic. But I am not sure it would make us think harder, or act differently.
