Haiku: a BeOS evolution
Tumblr media
Haiku is an open-source operating system that specifically targets personal computing. Inspired by the BeOS, Haiku is fast, simple to use, easy to learn and yet very powerful.
HAIKU is an open source operating system currently in development. Specifically targeting personal computing, Haiku is a fast, efficient, simple to use, easy to learn, and yet very powerful system for computer users of all levels. Additionally, Haiku offers something over other open source platforms which is quite unique: The project consists of a single team writing everything from the kernel, drivers, userland services, tool kit, and graphics stack to the included desktop applications and preflets. While numerous open source projects are utilized in Haiku, they are integrated seamlessly. This allows Haiku to achieve a level of consistency that provides many conveniences, and is truly enjoyable to use by both end-users and developers alike.
Haiku reimplements both the BeOS technologies as well as the end user experience, but it is far from being based on BeOS from a code base perspective. The only BeOS code that has made it into Haiku are Tracker and the Deskbar (the file manager and the equivalent of the start menu/taskbar, respectively). These were open sourced by Be Inc. back in 2001, later forked under the OpenTracker project, and eventually merged into the Haiku code base. The rest is either homebuilt code or derivatives of existing open source software.

With the grand promises of “Copland” having collapsed into plans for incremental upgrades, attention was turning to the BeOS, which just happened to run on Power Macs as well as the “BeBox.” This issue’s feature article did admit there wasn’t a lot built on the core of the BeOS yet, but insisted that with such a promising foundation things would surely advance from there... One new bit of hardware from Apple, a relatively inexpensive and unusually packaged portable that used “Newton technology,” also appeared on the cover. I did once see an actual eMate 300 at an “Apple in education” presentation at my university.

Wait wait wait, Winter said WHAT?! IRONWOOD?? SACRIFICED NOTHING?? OKAY WHITE HAIRED SNAKE WITH A SWORD—
He LITERALLY SEARED OFF HIS ARM, GAVE UP HIS PUBLIC IMAGE BECAUSE HE KNEW PEOPLE WOULD HATE THE ACTIONS HE TOOK, AND LITERALLY WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH A DECENT ASS PLAN
He sacrificed EVERYTHING, even his OWN DAMN LIFE IN THE END, and he STILL FAILED TO SAVE ATLAS/MANTLE BECAUSE SOME SNOT-NOSED BRAT THOUGHT SHE COULD DO IT BETTER!
Fuck outta here with that! This man sacrificed SO MUCH, only to be turned into a comic book style villain who suddenly wanted to bomb Mantle even though the situation had changed and the staff wasn't really necessary at that point (I think).
He and Penny were thrown to the (beo)wolves these two volumes, completely scrapping their prior arcs and suddenly just... Why. Emerald's redemption arc made more sense.
Team RWBYJNRO literally saved maybe a few thousand people, not counting the ones who were thrown into the void when Cinder appeared, and left Atlas AND Mantle to DIE! NOW THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED NATION IN REMNANT IS GONE. THE ONLY STANDING MILITARY IS GONE.
Basically, there's gonna have to be some MAJOR ASS PULLS for our ""heroes"" to win. They've given Salem two relics and destroyed a whole kingdom FOR HER. Even her own crew couldn't do that! And they destroyed motherfucking ATLAS.
i always found that line really hilarious because ... what had winter given up? what had she sacrified? everything she'd "lost", she'd lost the moment she came into the army to escape an abusive household & she actually gained more in the atlas military. she gained a standing, a title, she gained personal power & influence to get what she wanted & this isn't a bad thing.
but she also didn't lose anything. weiss? lost her after the fight. fria? was always going to be lost, she was old & dying & had to pass on the powers. the maiden powers? if we follow the narrative the show is trying to give us, winter never deserved them. winter was bad, winter sided with a dictator. winter was part of the supposed systemic problem that is suddenly solved with the death of an individual. much like another system problem that got solved with the death of a certain redhead faunus.
all of this is also ignoring & whitewashing winter's own part in this. she is the one who abuses her power — threatening the guards for doing their jobs & demanding they release weiss immediately — as well as being the first one to suggest martial law. i love winter, & i love her because she isn't this perfect angel. winter is not the poor abused baby who came under the thumb of a dictator. she is a grown woman in her mid 20s who made decisions using her power & influence in the military because that's what she thought was right & what needed to happen.
this woobification of her is not only annoying, but it's downright sexist. that a female character can't be responsible for her own questionable decisions & it has to be because of the abusive influence of a man, when that has not existed at any point of their relationship in the story before that? it's insulting. the writers just conveniently forgot all of this when they wrote her to say that line to a man who had sacrificed his own body multiple times while she acted the blue blood of atlas more than anyone ever wants to admit. winter is the peak of aristocracy trying to "blend in" with the working class & it's accepted because she's also the girlboss archetype that's adored.

See how was the spectacular USAF flyby at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles
Five military aircraft flew over at SoFi Stadium to celebrate 75 years of the U.S. Air Force.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/14/2020 - 07:32 am in Air Shows, Demonstration Squads, Military
Before Super Bowl LVI on January 13 in Los Angeles, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) presented American football fans with a rare "five-plane formation" to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
Tumblr media
The overflight above SoFi Stadium involved five different types of military aircraft flying in formation, from USAF bases in five different states.
The participating aircraft were:
F-35 Lightning from Hill Air Base in Utah
P-51 Mustang of the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation, Chino, California
Davis-Monthan Air Base A-10C Thunderbolt II, Arizona
F-16 Fighting Falcon of Shaw Air Base, South Carolina
F-22A Raptor from Langley Air Base, Virginia
The U.S. Air Force said it performs about 1,000 overflights per year. And while they “serve as a way to show the capabilities of our aircraft, while inspiring patriotism and future generations of aviation enthusiasts,” the U.S. Air Force also says that overflights do not incur additional costs for taxpayers and serve as a valuable training experience for pilots, crew and other employees.
Major Kristin “Beo” Wolfe, who is Commander of the F-35A Lightning II Demonstration Team at Hill Air Base in Utah, piloted the F-35 as part of the Heritage flight in the Super Bowl.
"It will be really exciting for me, as a pilot, to see how everything fits together," Maj. Wolfe said. She flew alongside other special and iconic aircraft
Tumblr media

Major Wolfe has been serving in the USAF for more than a decade and arrived at the F-35 Demo Team after serving in combat missions with the F-35 and F-22 Raptor.
“It is (F-35) the newest USAF fighter we have. It is the most technologically advanced. We are still receiving new planes at Hill Air Base as we speak, so it is very cool to receive the latest technology directly from Fort Worth to Hill," she said.
Tumblr media
Steve Hinton, veteran pilot who was in charge of the P-51 Mustang during the overflight.
Steve Hinton, who has spent the last 25 years flying aircraft with the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight team, spoke about the unique opportunity that the USAF will have to display its best military equipment in front of one of the largest stages in the world.
Tumblr media
“It is an honor to be part of this elite group,” Hinton said. “The demonstration teams are composed of our best aviators, not that they are better than the others, but they represent our armed forces well and, in my experience with them for the last 25 years, I am very proud to be part of it.”
Tumblr media
In preparation for the 2022 Super Bowl LVI Heritage Flyover, all aircraft rehearsed the flight in formation before flying over SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. All demonstration teams with a single aircraft of the Air Combat Command made the scheduled and historic overflight of Super Bowl LVI. Demonstration teams spent time with students from the Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, before taking off to rehearse.
“I have never flown a formation with five planes, with the four of us plus a warbird in it, so this will be fun and also challenging,” Maj. Wolfe, who will be flying his first official overflight event in an F-35.
Tumblr media
“It is much more complicated than, say, four F-35-only planes flying over Utah stadium. It's more complex because there are five planes with different characteristics, so all five planes fly differently, with different speeds, just as they have a different wingspan, different length and doing this kind of thing as a formation although looking symmetrical and really looking easy, this is a challenge in itself and then having to hit the moment of an overflight is really complex.”

[Beowulf@Nat] The large canine recognized the Darkrai hovering around the human, but became a bit concerned when he noticed a distinct scar on her neck. He gave a soft whine as he tilted his head at them. "Did a Pokemon cause this?" he asked, worried if there was an aggressive Pokemon around this area.
Tumblr media
[ Nat for one second began to undergo the task of deciphering what this...odd mightyena was saying. The dialect could be picked up specific phrases. Something about a scar and a pokemon. While the islander was knowledgeable on Pokemon speak, there was a lot of noises and cries that are the equivalent of conjugations.]
[ Despite having understood what this legendary canine was saying, Oscar felt a twinge of discomfort over the topic of the question. Nonetheless, he knew Beo did not mean it out of malice. Just genuine curiosity.]
He’s asking how you got the scar on your neck.
Tumblr media
[ Oscar sounded soft, like he was trying to signal to Nat she could ask not to talk about it. While she had some apprehensions, it was something she had moved on from.]
This is an electric scar.
[She tenderly put two fingers and traced the scar.]
What happened was my cousin had fallen in with the wrong crowd. He was going to get people hurt if he stayed in this group for too long. So my family and I went to confront him, but...I honestly don’t remember what caused him to shock me, but all I remember was that he used something that was able to emit a shock stronger than what most humans can do with normal technology. It was strong enough to where I passed out and it kind of jumbled my memories of specific details.
[ At this point the human felt changing the topic would be the best thing to do. She was uncomfortable, Oscar was uncomfortable and this furry mon was probably uncomfortable. From her perspective anyway. Fortunately for all present Nat has a topic already loaded in and all it needed was for the trigger to be pulled.]
What pokemon are you? I don’t think I have seen your type before.
[Oscar, having met Beo before, felt it was best to step in quickly and answer.]
He is a Zacian Nat'i. He is from the Galar region.
[Well that explained why she never had seen him before. She has not seen many pokemon that come from Galar. Oscar has a better bit of knowledge on the region by way of having met pokemon from that region for one reason or another. Nat nodded, making it clear she understood that much.]
So what brings out to our little island? And how did you meet this old mon.
[Nat chuckled, but Oscar gave a low grumble. That teasing was something he found endearing, but he felt he was spry for his age.]
(( guest ask by @askbohemiancompany !!! thanks for the superb writing Sol!))

Introduction of Common Ceramic Substrates
Ceramic substrates have high thermal conductivity and excellent insulation properties and have become key components in high-power power semiconductor modules, semiconductor coolers, electronic heaters, power control circuits, power hybrid circuits, and other equipment. These applications require materials to work stably under high-temperature conditions, and the high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulation properties of ceramic substrates just meet this requirement. In addition, ceramic substrates can also be used in intelligent power components, high-frequency switching power supplies solid-state relays, etc. These components play an important role in modern electronic devices.
Tumblr media
1. Alumina (Al2O3)
Alumina substrate is the most commonly used substrate material in the electronics industry because it has high strength and chemical stability compared to most other oxide ceramics in terms of mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, and the raw material source is abundant, which is suitable for various technical manufacturing and different shapes.
2. Beryllium oxide (BeO)
Beryllium oxide ceramics have a higher thermal conductivity than metal aluminum and are used in occasions requiring high thermal conductivity, but the thermal conductivity drops rapidly after exceeding 300°C. Most importantly, its toxicity limits its development. It is mainly used as a large-scale integrated circuit substrate, a high-power gas laser tube, a heat sink shell for a transistor, a microwave output window, and a neutron moderator.
Pure beryllium oxide (BeO) belongs to the cubic system and has a density of 3.03g/cm3. The melting point is 2570°C, with high thermal conductivity, almost equal to that of copper and pure aluminum, and a thermal conductivity coefficient of 200-250W/(mK), and it also has good thermal shock resistance. Its dielectric constant is 6 to 7 (0.1MHz). The dielectric loss tangent is about 4×10-4 (0.1GHz). The biggest disadvantage is that the powder is highly toxic and makes it difficult for wounds to heal. Beryllium oxide powder is used as the raw material and is added with aluminum oxide and other ingredients and sintered at high temperatures. Good protective measures are required to manufacture this ceramic. Beryllium oxide will become more volatile in a high-temperature medium containing water vapor. It will start to volatilize at 1000℃, and the amount of volatilization will increase with the increase in temperature, which brings difficulties to production. Some countries no longer produce it. However, the product has excellent performance and although the price is relatively high, there is still a considerable demand.
3. Aluminum Nitride (AlN)
AlN has two important properties: one is high thermal conductivity, and the other is expansion coefficient matching Si. The disadvantage is that even a very thin oxide layer on the surface will affect the thermal conductivity. Only by strictly controlling the materials and processes can a consistent AlN substrate be manufactured. Compared with Al2O3, the price of AlN is relatively high, which is also a small bottleneck restricting its development. However, with the upgrading of technology, this bottleneck will eventually disappear.
4. Silicon Nitride (Si3N4)
The new ceramic substrates made of silicon nitride have higher flexural strength than substrates made of Al2O3 and AlN. Until now, the reliability of copper-clad ceramic substrates used in power modules has been limited by the low flexural strength of the ceramic, which reduces thermal cycling capabilities. For applications that combine extreme thermal and mechanical stresses, such as hybrid and electric vehicles (HEV/EV), ceramic substrates commonly used today are not the best choice. The large difference in thermal expansion coefficients between the substrate (ceramic) and the conductor (copper) can stress the bonding area during thermal cycling, which can reduce reliability.
With an operating life that is 10 times or longer than other ceramics used in power electronics, silicon nitride substrates provide the mechanical strength that is critical to achieving the necessary reliability requirements. The lifetime of a ceramic substrate is measured by the number of thermal cycle repetitions it can withstand without delamination and other failures that affect circuit functionality and safety. This test is typically done by cycling samples from -55°C to 125°C or 150°C. The extended lifetime is critical for all power module applications where large semiconductor wafers are directly bonded to the substrate and is particularly important for SiC and GaN wafers with higher junction temperatures (up to 250°C).
The mechanical strength of the new substrates allows the use of thinner ceramic layers, which reduces thermal resistance, increases power density, and cuts system costs.
Compared to Al2O3 Designers will benefit from the much improved flexural strength compared to AlN substrates. The fracture toughness of silicon nitride even exceeds that of zirconia-doped ceramics, reaching 6.5-7 MPa·m1/2 at a thermal conductivity of 80 W/mK.
