🎄💾🗓️ Day 10: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - BeOS 🎄💾🗓️
BeOS, developed by Be Inc. in the mid-1990s, was an operating system for multimedia applications, multitasking, and multithreading. Initially designed for the BeBox—a proprietary hardware platform featuring dual PowerPC processors—BeOS was later ported to the Macintosh and x86 architectures. Its kernel was monolithic, and the system was primarily written in C++. It featured a 64-bit journaling Be File System (BFS), which supported metadata and allowed rapid file queries and fast performance for multimedia tasks. Despite its technical strengths, including support for symmetric multiprocessing and a responsive graphical user interface, BeOS struggled to gain market traction. Development ceased in 2001 after Palm Inc. acquired Be Inc.'s assets. BeOS continues through Haiku, an open-source project aiming for binary compatibility with BeOS R5.
A bunch of resources and links for this one!

I am yet to complete the 2023 reflections.
I'm feeling to draw some OS-Tan. As well as to check more about other Operating Systems.
Is there a Be-OS OS-Tan? I know Amiga OS has an OS-Tan design, as well as Haiku. But Be-OS? I haven't find a design.

Is Athens going to have a new mayor tomorrow? This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:
* Hate speech, electoral threats, and… poop
* Israelis based in Athens are heading to the front line
* One after another, public hospitals stop scheduled surgeries
The first round of the local elections was completed the previous Sunday and it's now followed by the second round this Sunday for those municipalities and peripheries that did not manage yet to elect their representatives. There are interesting political observations to be made so far.
“Twenty flights from Athens will carry some 5,000 Israeli reservists to their home country to join the armed forces” - “A Greek warship is reportedly being deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean – it’s likely to be stationed off the Israel-Lebanon border”: We take a look how Greece is affected by the conflict at Gaza.
Finally, two big hospitals have ceased surgeries due to a lack of anesthesiologists. No one can be sure when and if they will resume.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week's updates on the events and developments in Greece here: https://steadyhq.com/en/athenslivegr/posts/dc767671-4c71-4220-aea8-3374b46418d3
For anyone with a wish or need to follow and to gain an insight into recent events in Greece and to read and support independent and investigative journalism in English, the weekly newsletter from AthensLive should be a core element in the reading flow.
If you want the best overview of the events and developments in Greece right now, this is the place to go. Not the mainstream Greek news, but independent journalism with sharp analysis and links to interesting and important topics from a variety of sources.

mac classic, next and osx were calling them apps before ios and android had ever seen a public
they're packages, not just the program binary. you can open them up and see everything. it's a different paradigm from DOS-informed windows, and from the usual POSIX userspace.
i'm forty in a few months, this paradigm is old as me. surely we can understand "these are various applications of this system's capabilities." surely we can understand a package is not just a program, nor a script, but may contain both and more. surely we can understand mac classic was a very flexible system, as was next, which is literally all of the apple operating systems now.
apps isn't what's restricting your phone, and it's not restricting your computer, either. and there are systems that are not windows and are not PC-DOS derivatives, each with their own paradigms you'd know a hell of a lot more about if not for microsoft strongarming the competition out of existence.
anyway these are applications of your system's capabilities. use them, see them as examples and see if you can come up with new ones.
next, be, haiku and the apple ecosystem are all the children of mac classic. along with apps we get automation – a visual scripting language chaining actions across apps on a file, which can be called repeatedly from a menu. we get droplets – specifically described processes from a single app that can be carried out on a file, like say you want a specific kind of compression with a specific setting ready to carry out on files as they're made; now rather than opening the whole thing up, you drag and drop the droplet over the file and it does what you wanted, using minimum resources and minimum time. and we get to use bash scripts because POSIX, these aren't presented as anything but scripts; you can perform any actions you want on any files you want, using any process with hooks.
first computer i ever touched was an apple ][, not long after was a macintosh, most my life in computers has been away from windows, using either linux, a bsd (including osx) or haiku.
not to enforce gender roles but a computer should NOT fucking have apps okay. if I wanted an app I'd go on my phone my laptop is for Programs. I mean this.
#cocoa#macintosh#POSIX#haiku-os#beos#next#they're all shaking hands like “fuck is a program?”#windows can go to hell#java got apps and applets too and sun was the goat#y'all can't not bother to know what your systems can do and claim that's anybody else's fault#fucking explore what you have

"Чтение Мыслей" в Индии: Приговор за Убийство на Основе Спорной Технологии
В Индии произошёл скандальный случай: девушку осудили за убийство, не имея прямы доказательств, но опираясь на крайне спорную технологию "чтения мыслей".
24-летнюю Адити Шарму обвинили в отравлении её жениха ещё в 2008 году. При отсутствии вещественных доказательств и свидетелей, а также при полном отрицании вины самой обвиняемой, следователи применили метод BEOS (Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature Profiling).
