Writing Notes: Critical Thinking
Tumblr media
Critical Thinking - the ability to examine information rationally and make a reasoned judgment based on your analysis.
Critical thinkers refuse to accept subject matter at face value and are aware of their own cognitive biases, which allows them to approach objective conclusions.
Higher-order thinking skills like critical thinking enable you to learn actively, rather than passively absorbing information as it's presented to you.
How to Improve Your Critical Thinking Skills
The development of critical thinking skills takes time, but there are some particular ways to speed up the process. As a starting point, follow these steps for teaching critical thinking.
Pinpoint the issue. Whether it's a problem that needs solving or a question that needs an answer, begin the critical thinking process by identifying the issue at hand.
Collect information. Accumulate as much research and data on the issue as possible. Make sure to seek out sources that challenge your own beliefs.
Examine and scrutinize. Check that your sources of information are reliable, determine their biases, and ensure any opinions are backed up by hard evidence.
Decide what's relevant. Figure out which arguments are actually relevant to your issue, and flag the most consequential pieces of information.
Self-evaluate. Ask yourself, "Was I biased when seeking information?"
Draw conclusions. Decide on one or more possible conclusions. Evaluate the soundness of your conclusions and flag any flaws.
Explain your conclusions. Clearly communicate your conclusions to the relevant parties.
Examples of Critical Thinking Skills
There are many important elements involved in thinking critically. To become a better critical thinker, familiarize yourself with these key concepts.
Open-mindedness: Critical thinkers must work to have unbiased thought processes and remain open to more than one point of view. This openness to challenging information is a foundation for critical thinking.
Analysis: Analyze information to determine its reliability and to understand it well enough to draw further conclusions. This is one of the most important aspects of critical thinking.
Interpretation: Take time to interpret your analysis, synthesizing, and deciphering the meaning of relevant information.
Problem-solving: Once you analyze and interpret a problem, you can come up with one or more possible solutions.
Decision-making: By making a decisive decision, you come to a conclusion based on the data you have interpreted.
Effective communication: You must be able to convincingly explain your conclusions (and the thought process behind them) to others.
Self-improvement: Good critical thinkers develop positive habits of mind by reflecting on their own personal critical thinking process and looking for ways to improve it.
The greatest benefit of critical thinking is simply that it helps you make more informed decisions in your everyday life.
Strong critical thinking abilities are especially important in both secondary and higher education environments; critical reading and thinking skills allow high school and college students to engage in learning at the highest level.
Critical thinking is also an important skill in your professional life. Employers value workers who tackle problems logically and view situations from different perspectives in order to come up with the best solution. If you're in a job interview and can demonstrate to your potential employer that you have a proven track record of thinking critically, there’s a better chance you’ll get hired.

The number of people who read for fun appears to be steadily dropping. Fifty percent of UK adults say they don’t read regularly (up from 42 percent in 2015) and almost one in four young people aged 16 to 24 say they’ve never been readers, according to research by The Reading Agency.
But what are the implications? Will people’s preference for video over text affect our brains or our evolution as a species? What kind of brain structure do good readers actually have? My new study, published in NeuroImage, has found out.
I analyzed open source data from more than 1,000 participants to discover that readers of varying abilities had distinct traits in brain anatomy.
The structure of two regions in the left hemisphere, which are crucial for language, were different in people who were good at reading.
One was the anterior part of the temporal lobe. The left temporal pole helps associate and categorize different types of meaningful information. To assemble the meaning of a word such as leg, this brain region associates the visual, sensory and motor information conveying how legs look, feel and move.
The other was Heschl’s gyrus, a fold on the upper temporal lobe which hosts the auditory cortex (the cortex is the outermost layer of the brain). Better reading ability was linked to a larger anterior part of the temporal lobe in the left hemisphere compared to the right. It makes sense that having a larger brain area dedicated to meaning makes it easier to understand words and, therefore, to read.
What might seem less intuitive is that the auditory cortex would be related to reading. Isn’t reading mainly a visual skill? Not only. To pair letters with speech sounds, we first need to be aware of the sounds of the language. This phonological awareness is a well-established precursor to children’s reading development.
A thinner left Heschl’s gyrus has previously been related to dyslexia, which involves severe reading difficulties. My research shows that this variation in cortical thickness does not draw a simple dividing line between people with or without dyslexia. Instead, it spans the larger population, in which a thicker auditory cortex correlates with more adept reading.
Why Size Matters
Is thicker always better? When it comes to cortical structure, no, not necessarily. We know the auditory cortex has more myelin in the left hemisphere of most people. Myelin is a fatty substance that acts as an insulator for nerve fibers. It increases neural communication speed and can also insulate columns of brain cells from each other. Neural columns are believed to function as small processing units.
Their increased isolation and rapid communication in the left hemisphere can be thought to enable the fast, categorical processing necessary for language. We need to know if a speaker uses the category d or t when saying dear or tear rather than detecting the exact point where the vocal folds start vibrating.
According to the “balloon model” of cortical growth, the larger amount of myelin squeezes out left-hemispheric cortical areas, making them flatter but more extended. So while the left auditory cortex may be thicker in good readers, it is still thinner (but much more extended) than the corresponding right cortex.
This hypothesis was corroborated in the recent research. The left hemisphere had generally larger but thinner cortical areas with a higher degree of myelin.
So is thinner better, then? Again, the answer is no, not necessarily. Complex abilities that require integrating information tend to benefit from a thicker cortex. The anterior temporal lobe with its complex way of integrating information is indeed the thickest structure of all cortical areas. An underlying mechanism might be the existence of more overlapping, interacting neurons which process information more holistically.
Phonology is a highly complex skill, where different sound and motor features are integrated into speech sounds. It appears to correlate with a thicker cortex in an area near the left Heschl’s gyrus. While it is unclear to what extent phonology is processed in Heschl’s gyrus, the fact that phoneticians often have multiple left Heschl’s gyri suggests it is linked to speech sounds.
Clearly, brain structure can tell us a lot about reading skills. Importantly, though, the brain is malleable—it changes when we learn a new skill or practice an already acquired one.
For instance, young adults who studied language intensively increased their cortical thickness in language areas. Similarly, reading is likely to shape the structure of the left Heschl’s gyrus and temporal pole. So, if you want to keep your Heschl’s thick and thriving, pick up a good book and start reading.
Finally, it’s worth considering what might happen to us as a species if skills like reading become less prioritized. Our capacity to interpret the world around us and understand the minds of others would surely diminish. In other words, that cozy moment with a book in your armchair isn’t just personal—it’s a service to humanity.

Jenny Odell: I sometimes feel that in an individualistic culture, people get freaked out by the idea of being tied down or responsible for anything. Thinking about a gift economy, they might say, “I want the gift part but not the accountability part.” Lately, I’ve been volunteering in this native plant restoration group, and one of the most surprising parts has been how enlivening it is to help keep something else alive (I’ve never had a garden before). Sometimes I truly can’t tell whether I’m giving or getting. What are some ways that you see participation in a gift economy changing the participant’s sense of herself and her place in a network? In other words, is participation itself part of the gift?
RK: Yes. Exactly. Participation is part of the gift, where giving and getting meld into one another. A garden teaches you that every day. Gifts and responsibilities are always coupled to each other.
Of course, you’re right that given our hyper-individualistic culture, many people are not eager to embrace responsibility. Its often confounded, I think with the notion of “obligation”. Obligation feels to me like an involuntary demand on our time and energy, imposed from outside without the assurance that you’ll benefit in return. I’m sometimes reluctant about that, too. But, responsibility is an invitation to respond to need, an opening to reciprocity in which the benefits flow both ways. The benefits of participation in a gift economy are not only flowing to the gift recipient but the giver as well. Working on your restoration project, or any other gift exchange strengthens your own sense of agency, doesn’t it? It awakens care and compassion, builds relationship and nurtures your own identity as a person of capacity, of having enough abundance in your life that you can share it. I think it contributes to a sense of purpose, which we know is good medicine. It reminds you that you matter, that you’re part of something. That’s a big reward.
I find that some of the times that I feel most fully alive are in experiences of shared physical work in community with others. Like an old-time husking bee or shared planting. We’ve lost so many of the opportunities for that and gift economies provide the opportunity to work in common, to satisfy the need for belonging. And when that work is on the land and the benefits flow into our neighborhood of many species, the benefits are multiplied beyond the boundaries of ourselves.
JO: There is a really beautiful analogy you draw between the economy of nature and the human gift economy. Asking what in the gift economy functions as the “sun”–the constantly replenishing source of energy–you speculate: “Maybe it is love.” Reading this, it occurred to me how love is in essence a surplus, the force that gets things going. Could you speak more to the emotional and practical role that things like love and gratitude play in a gift economy? And how do they change the way we see “resources”?
RK: The fundamental currency of a gift economy, is relationship, not money. I suppose it’s what some people call “social capital”, but I’m not fond of that term. Participation in a gift economy could create a whole continuum of relationships, from the warmth of being cared for or an expanded sense of justice to just plain neighborliness. This can create a sense of security because mutual reliance grows from gift exchange. There is a sense of satisfaction in being able to give, and a sense of kinship in being able to receive, when we share the mutual acknowledgment of human vulnerability. For me, that continuum of relationships includes the possibility of a currency of love and gratitude that motivates the gift exchange, which is the source of the flow, between people and between people and the earth as well.
Gift-giving is a way of saying “I see you.” I see what you need and I see what I have to share. My well-being is tied to yours and yours to mine. It develops a trust that when I am in need, there will be abundance shared with me. The giver and the recipient are honored at the same time. That seems a lot like love to me.
Robin Wall Kimmerer, interviewed by Jenny Odell, Gift Thinking. [emphasis added]

Origin of the Sweat Lodge
The sweat lodge is a temporary or permanent structure integral to Native American culture and frequently used in spiritual ceremonies. The lodge is often a low, dome-shaped, structure heated by hot rocks which produce steam as water is poured on them, raising the temperature to induce heavy sweating among participants and physical and spiritual cleansing.
The sweat lodge is part of the seven sacred rites of the Sioux, and the Lakota refer to the rite of purification, in which the lodge plays a central role, as inipi ("to live again") as it is believed participants shed both physical and non-physical impurities through the ceremony. Once freed, or even in the process of liberation from what has been holding one back from becoming one's true self, a participant might receive a vision directing that person's future path (beneficial to themselves and others) or delivering a message for the good of the wider community or the world.
The sweat lodge is also an important aspect of the Sun Dance and of many other ceremonies in different nations. As with all civilizations, each nation likes to lay claim to being the first the gods favored with some important gift or discovery and so it is with the Origin of the Sweat Lodge from the Piegan people of the Blackfoot Confederacy. This origin story not only explains how the sweat lodge came to be but also how intimately the sun, moon, and stars – and, by extension, all of the universe – are intimately connected to human beings. It also emphasizes, as many Native American tales do, the cultural value of the primacy of communal over individual good.
The Piegan
The Piegan are a part of the Blackfoot Confederacy along with the Kainai and Siksika and once lived in the vast region stretching from modern-day Saskatchewan, Canada, through Montana, USA, and areas east and west. The Piegan are the largest band of the three and seem to have come originally from the Great Lakes region before becoming a part of the Plains Indians culture. The three nations are bound by a common language – Algonquin – but otherwise have their own distinct culture.
All three celebrate the Sun Dance and make use of the sweat lodge as well as observing other practices and rituals common to many, if not all, Native American nations, such as the recognition of 'medicine' – spiritual power – and the use of the 'medicine bag' – a pouch containing items of transcendent power which have meaning to the specific individual carrying it. The common term for a holy person of a nation, 'medicine man' or 'medicine woman', comes from that person's highly developed personal spiritual power, but every person has access to the spiritual world and the Great Spirit, and this relationship is both symbolized and maintained through practices such as the keeping of one's medicine bag. Scholar Michael G. Johnson writes:
religion included the wide use of "bundles" containing symbols (usually remnants of birds, animals, and objects) of the power of dreamed or vision experience. These personalized sources of power were opened at times, with accompanying rituals for group benefit, for health, hunting, and prestige. (105)
The sweat lodge was one such time a medicine bag would be opened by the person leading the ceremony for the good of the participants but, individually – and on a daily basis – the bag helps to maintain one's balance in life through the reminder of connection to all other living things and, in the story of the Origin of the Sweat Lodge, though the bag is not mentioned, it would have helped maintain the kind of relationship with higher powers that causes Morning-Star to look down and take pity on the young man who is the central character.
Whether a medicine bag is opened during a sweat lodge ceremony or remains closed is up to the person presiding over it and the perceived needs of the participants, but, opened or closed, the ceremony held – and still holds – tremendous spiritual and cultural significance.

The Ritual (Kakasaku)
To the student body of the University of Konoha, Kakashi Hatake is their teacher of Philosophy of Cosmology. For the small number of students who select this subject as part of their curriculum each year, they insist that, yes, he is younger than most of the teachers and certainly more attractive. His slightly slouched figure commands attention in every room. However, he is chronically late, often seems apathetic towards his students, and is notoriously hard to impress in the classroom.
Low grades are a frequent occurrence in his tests and final scores. Those who dare to write essays or papers about black holes, against the warnings of older students that it is his area of expertise, unknowingly subject themselves to rigorous scrutiny of their work and a barrage of complex questions on the topic that discourages even the bravest and breaks the weakest. In short, he appears impossible to please as a teacher and incredibly easy to disappoint, often criticizing his students' lack of imagination when attempting to bridge the topics of his class, allowing their opinions to shift from one position to another, like leaves in the wind.
Kakashi Hatake is one of the most brilliant physicists of his time, yet he works at a godforsaken university instead of one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. And this isn’t because he is on a noble mission, putting his knowledge at the service of those who weren’t fortunate enough to secure a place at a better university, nor is it because he wants to collaborate on a revolutionary idea with a teacher lacking funding so they could work together and bask in the recognition afterward. No, Kakashi ended up at Konoha due to the reaction of his peers to his beliefs and how those beliefs intertwined with his work.
Kakashi is undeniably brilliant, but a life marked by loss shaped his conviction that black holes are the threshold to another realm or, at the very least, a means of communication with it. He believes they are a door humanity does not yet know how to open, and he is determined to decipher how to use them. However, his line of study was met with mockery and cold remarks about his sanity. Tired of enduring such treatment, he decided to retreat to a more secluded place, where he could continue developing his work without dealing with the snarky remarks about his research. The more distant he remains from his colleagues and students, the fewer personal questions he has to answer.
The truth is that Kakashi is desperate to find substantial proof to back his thesis, either to reunite with his loved ones or at least to ask the burning questions that haunt him every day. Why did his father take his own life when he was so young? Why couldn’t he endure his demons a little longer for his sake? Why did Obito have to try to be a hero by enlisting in the army, only to be killed so young? Why was Kakashi tasked with watching over a grieving Rin when he was the least suited person for the job? Why was he left alone at every turn?
After a decade of working non-stop on his thesis, Kakashi is tired of the answers slipping through his fingers. Technology has not yet reached the level required to prove his work, and people remain too close-minded to even attempt to understand his ideas. The frustration weighs on him like a slab on his shoulders, heavier with each passing day. The fury Kakashi feels from the lack of genuine support and the mockery he endures has ultimately led his investigations down an unexpected path, magic.
Of course, someone like Kakashi did not wake up one morning and decide to perform the ritual he had spent a month and a half setting up. If that had been the case, he would have checked himself into a mental hospital immediately. No, his interest in magic and the belief that it could benefit his thesis came at a slower pace and from an innocuous source: the faculty library.
He was there looking for books to complement his work, when he stumbled onto Essays on Science and the Practice of Magic in Antiquity, forgotten in a dusty corner. On any other day, he wouldn’t have paid it any attention, but Kakashi wasn’t having a good day, and he felt a peculiar sympathy for the book. He knew all too well what it was like to be relegated to a corner, silenced so as not to bother the rest. With that in mind, he decided to take the book home.
The book turned out to be more interesting that what Kakashi initially thought, it was a collection of essays about how in the antiquity magic and mysticism were present in the lives of some of the renowned scientific names of their time, whose contributions are still the foundation of today’s science, and these figures did believe in things that the modern world rejects today, but if they were right in their works of geometry or astronomy why would they be wrong in that aspect too?
That first book led him to read Physics and Mystic: Philosophy, Religion and Magic in Late Antiquity, that also lead him to The Mystic of the Numbers in the Pythagoreanism, and Kakashi kept delving deeper into the subject, until he was reading exclusively about mysticism and magic, thirsting for the new knowledge the topic could offer, eventually he did found Ancient Magic in a New Key, an old, tattered book with a battered, scratched cover worn from years of continuous use. The margins were filled with handwritten commentary from different people across various time periods. But most importantly, it contained descriptions of real magic rituals.
Kakashi studied the book thoroughly, it was filled to the brim with rituals for love, amassing power, gaining knowledge, killing enemies, acquiring wealth, winning wars, provoking catastrophes, and even summoning demons. But Kakashi had no interest in any of these. What caught his attention was a more modest ritual, one designed to prove the veracity of a person’s claims. It seemed to have been performed in the past before trials, giving the individual tangible evidence to support their assertions. After all, what is science, if not a perpetual trial?
With that in mind Kakashi spent months, trying to untangle the content of the ritual,  separating and classifying the commentary of other rituals, what they did, what was needed, what demanded, there were runes and hieroglyphs as well as pictograms and mathematical formulas all mixed together, complicating his task. Ultimately he managed to compile a list that included finding a location and objects related to what he was trying to prove, several formulas to write in the space and with what materials they should be written, the disposition of them, and finally blood. That was the most unsettling element, but every ritual spoke of a price to pay, and Kakashi would happily provide a couple of liters of his blood if he could finally test his ideas.
Following his checklist the first thing he needed was somewhere to carry on with the ritual. After scouting the area surrounding Konoha, Kakashi discovered an old astronomical observatory abandoned in the 1990s, resting atop one of the nearby mountains, the perfect place to carry out his plans, remote and unlikely to attract anyone’s attention in the middle of the night.
The ritual’s instructions were precise, specifying whose blood was required and the exact moments it should be drawn. It needed to be his, and he needed to take half a liter every time the moon changed phases, for at least six different ones, always an hour before dawn. That introduced the problem of how to store the blood from all of these different moments to preserve it as fresh as possible. Luckily for Kakashi, as a teacher he had access to the labs, where if a few glass flasks with lids went missing, as well as some anticoagulant, it’s not going to raise any suspicion, none of the teachers of the chemistry department has a good track of keeping a tight control over their supplies. Kakashi discreetly acquired a small freezer for storing the blood, ensuring it wouldn’t draw attention from those around him.
The task of withdrawing the blood was more a nuisance than anything, in preparation for it Kakashi needed to annotate the days the moon changed its phases and then check the exact hour when dawn would begin, he had to set an alarm for an hour and a half earlier since he needed to be awake enough for the task, unless he wanted to rupture a vein or something worse, he gave himself that hour and a half to shower, have a coffee and gain some mental clarity before doing it. It was a relief when he performed it for the last time, then all he needed to do was wait for the next moon phase change to carry out with his plans.
Tonight is the day. Tonight Kakashi Hatake is going to prove to the world that his theories are right. With a resolute step he enters the building, the air reeks of humidity, the dome of the building is broken and rain and snowstorms have swept inside over time. Every object left in the building is now covered in a thick layer of dust, moss, mold, or a mix of everything. Stains are splattered across the floor, remnants of leaks from the damaged dome, and most of the metal in the room is rusted and oxidized. In the center of the room lies the telescope. Kakashi is surprised to find it left behind as well.
The lenses are splintered, rendering it useless, but for what Kakashi intends to use it for, it is enough. Kakashi makes his first trip to the car to retrieve his own telescope. He needs to locate the Virgo Cluster in the night sky. Once he does so, he moves the abandoned telescope, not without effort, until it aligns with the same position in the sky as his own telescope. Once satisfied, he returns his telescope to the trunk of the car and proceeds to bring out almost all the items for the ritual.
First he lays a big piece of translucent silk on the floor next to the telescope. On it, he has written several mathematical formulas in gold ink, along with hieroglyphs from the book in silver ink. On the silk, he carefully places one of the laboratory cuvettes he stole from the lab, and in the middle of it, aligned with the eyepiece of the telescope, he places a tiny prism made of graphite. With one final trip to the car, Kakashi brings the blood inside and pours it with precision until it fully covers the prism.
Now he only needs to complete one last step, Kakashi needs to place the flame of a candle in front of the largest lense of the telescope for it to function like some short of magnifying glass, since he wants to prove what lies at the other side of a black hole, the graphite prism will act like one, absorbing the light instead of refracting it like one made out of glass, the broken telescope and the abandoned building will serve as metaphors of the death, and Kakashi muses that his blood has to be the payment for proving he is right.
After the first five minutes of standing on a ladder, holding the flame in front of the lense, he starts to feel stupid and and begins questioning whether all his work was for nothing. Perhaps he truly is as insane as people presume him to be, but then, a wind that wasn’t there before starts to howl inside the observatory, the room starts to feel warmer and the smell transforms from humidity to sulphur, Kakashi finds himself paralyzed, only capable of moving his eyes and breathing. The smoke from the flame grows in size until it looks like it is coming from a much larger source. The blood in the cuvette starts to boil, adding a metallic scent to the already foul air. Blackness envelops the room, and his vision blurs until he can see nothing at all, after that Kakashi begins to hear an incessant ring on his ears.
It takes a while before he regains his senses one by one, tact is the first one, Kakashi notices that he still is holding onto the candle more or less in the same position before the ritual overwhelmed his senses. He believes himself unharmed, and the room seems to have returned to its previous temperature.
The next sense to return is taste. He feels the metallic tang of blood in his mouth. He isn’t sure if it’s from the blood in the cuvette or if he injured himself during the episode. Despite his efforts, he cannot locate a wound either inside or outside his mouth. Not long after, his sense of smell returns, and he notices that the sulfuric stench has left the room. The odor of dampness has returned with full force, but mingled with it is an out of place floral scent coming from somewhere nearby.
In fourth place comes the sense of hearing, and initial stillness is followed by the soft sound of steps moving in the furthest point from him, the exact place where the floral smell seems to be steaming from, Kakashi clings to every bit of information his senses provide, desperately trying to determine the result of the ritual.
After what it feels like an eternity Kakashi regains his eyesight again, quickly he checks himself for injuries, quickly assessing that he is in fact as good as he was before the episode, then proceeds to scan the room, there, in the furthest corner of the room, with her back turned to him is her.
In the dim light of the observatory she appears both ethereal and unreal, her long hair cascades to her hips in waves, a part of it is twisted or maybe braided, to keep it away from her face, it looks like a pale shade of red or maybe pink, Kakashi isn’t sure, what he can see it’s that she is wearing an almost transparent black tunic that reaches her feet, the fabric of garment has sparkling details that capture the light with every one of her movements, it has long fluid sleeves, and the skirt has lace patterns on it. It has a vague resemblance to what a woman would wear on top of a bikini, except it’s far more intricate and she isn’t wearing anything underneath it.
The woman looks completely out of place in this dirty, rusty observatory, yet Kakashi cannot take his eyes off her. Though his isolation is self imposed and he has never been one for long lasting relationships, Kakashi has been with several women in the past and is no stranger to the beauty of the female form. There is something about her long legs or perhaps her round ass that keeps his gaze fixed on her. She must notice it because she spins to face him, and his breath catches in his chest.
Her eyes are captivating. Kakashi is so enthralled by them that he barely notices her moving toward him. In the blink of an eye, she is standing at the foot of the ladder.
–You should come down, human, you're going to fall and what a waste it would be to lose that pretty face by smashing it against the ground. –
Her voice is velvety, made for seduction or for whispering dark secrets in the shadows. Kakashi descends to face her, realizing that she is smaller than him, the top of her head barely reaches his shoulders.
– I’ve been summoned to many weird places, but this one takes the cake. –  Kakashi isn’t sure if it’s the situation or the floral scent emanating from her, but every word that leaves her red lips confuses him more than the last. – Summoned? Like a demon? – – I don’t know why you sound so confused human, you did it yourself – – Me? No, there must be a mistake. First of all, my name is Kakashi. Second, I didn’t summon you. I performed the ritual, yes, but I was trying to prove what lies on the other side of a black hole.–  her laugh cuts him off. –Then why add the blood and the flame if you didn’t want to summon me?. There is no need to be shy or make excuses. Kakashi – The way she pronounces his name sends shivers through his spine. – No, the flame was an allegory for the fire burning inside the stars and the blood was the payment, the book said. – – Well either your precious book lied to you, or you didn’t interpret it right. Whatever it is, now you’re stuck with me for the rest of your life. And while one of the children of Avaritia might have been better suited to your wishes, I’m still powerful enough to assist you. I’m also quite certain that the payment method will interest you far more. –
If she is telling the truth, Kakashi has failed so spectacularly on his task that he has managed to summon a demon, and Kakashi has no idea how to make her leave, and she seems to be having too much fun right now, if her hands roaming through the expanse of his chest is indicative of anything. Maybe all he can do it’s get what he can out of this while trying to minimize the chaos she can unleash.
– In that case, what or how should I call you? – Her captivating eyes light up as she presses her body tightly against his. – Sakura, but I’m sure that we can find more along the way. – She winks at him before raising to her tiptoes to grab his face between her hands and kissing him on the lips.

Article: 'Nightingale boss Aaryn Flynn opens up on the game's challenges'
With Realms Rebuilt coming six months after Nightingale's release, I had the chance to speak with Aaryn Flynn, CEO of developer Inflexion, about Nightingale, the Realms Rebuilt update, and his long history at BioWare.
Excerpt:
"As the interview draws to a close, we chat broadly about Flynn's time as a director and general manager at BioWare. While he reveals his favorite creations – Neverwinter Nights and Jade Empire, for those curious – he also touches on "frustrations" with the company that he's previously spoken about. Part of this stemmed from an apparent disconnect between the developer and its audience, which is something he's been pleased to correct at Inflexion. "We're benefiting hugely from connecting with players through [live updates] and that was something that was much harder at BioWare," he explains. "I think Baldur's Gate 3 did an amazing job of that by still being a story-driven game that went to Early Access, and that was just never in the cards for us at BioWare, at least to my belief. So I think it's that element that was getting me frustrated. You could see the benefit of these other teams having such success by connecting so deeply with their communities and learning from them, trying things out with them. And that just wasn't something we did at BioWare, and I don't think they're still doing that. Still, [it's a] super talented team, and I'm excited to play Veilguard.""

RuneScape Pride Month Backlash: 9 Key Facts About Jagex’s 2025 Reversal
Tumblr media
When RuneScape Pride Month Backlash first started trending in May 2025, many long-time players were stunned. Why would Jagex, famous for celebrating LGBTQ+ fans, suddenly cancel its annual Pride content? Below are the nine essential facts you need to understand what happened, how staff and players reacted, and what the future holds for queer representation in Gielinor. 1. The Announcement That Sparked the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash An internal post to Jagex’s company forum on May 7, 2025 revealed that new CEO Jon Bellamy had “no plans” for a Pride event this year, urging developers to focus on “what players wanted.” The leak triggered the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash across Reddit and Twitter within hours. 2. Why Pride Matters Inside RuneScape Since its launch in 2001, RuneScape has been a refuge where queer gamers could quest, role-play and build clans without judgment. The 2013 launch of Old School RuneScape (OSRS) only deepened that bond; player-polled updates gave LGBTQ+ fans a direct voice in shaping the game. Canceling Pride felt, to many, like deleting that voice — hence the depth of the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash. 3. A New CEO and a New Corporate Climate Bellamy stepped in during a global wave of pushback against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Parent firm CVC Capital Partners has significant U.S. exposure, and staff sources say American market pressures weighed heavily on leadership. Internally, some employees labeled the decision “…catering to American conservatism,” a phrase now synonymous with the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash. 4. Staff Pleas: “Let Us Finish the Content on Our Own Time” Developers close to the Pride project told managers that nearly all assets — NPC “Rain,” rainbow capes, dialogue and a Varrock parade route — were already complete. They even volunteered personal hours to polish and ship the update. Management’s silence added fuel to the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash, reinforcing a narrative that diversity work is expendable. 5. The May 15 Open Letter and Community Data You Haven’t Seen Jagex’s LGBTQ+ employee resource group sent an open letter on May 15, 2025. Key data points included: Pride 2024 cosmetics drove a 3.7 % week-over-week revenue lift. Only 1.4 % of support tickets referenced “political” objections to Pride. These figures undermined the idea that Pride events hurt business, intensifying the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash. 6. CEO Q&A: “We Need to Protect the Business” During a stormy all-hands on May 20, Bellamy accepted blame for how the news was delivered but doubled down on pausing in-game Pride. He said Jagex must “protect the business” from external backlash while permitting player-run marches. Clips from the meeting circulated widely, becoming Exhibit A in the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash. 7. From Varrock to Twitter: The Player Response Players organised unofficial in-game marches, filling World 301’s Grand Exchange with rainbow-dyed capes on June 1, 2025. Community artists released charity-benefit cosmetic packs on Patreon, and the hashtag #RunescapeWithPride amassed two million views — proof the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash was more than mere noise. 8. Jagex’s Current Position: Legacy Content, Future Unclear A company spokesperson told press on June 8, 2025: “RuneScape remains a safe space for all. Existing Pride cosmetics stay live while we explore more meaningful partnerships.” In short, 2024’s rainbow items and mini-quest remain available, but nothing new is planned for 2025. This half-measure keeps the RuneScape Pride Month Backlash in the spotlight as fans decide whether symbolic gestures are enough. 9. What Comes Next for LGBTQ+ Representation in Gielinor? Short term: Player-driven marches continue; expect a June 29 send-off parade in both RS3 and OSRS. Medium term: Jagex is studying charity tie-ins for 2026. Insiders hint at a Pride-themed questline revamp if board approval lands. Long
term: The RuneScape Pride Month Backlash may set a precedent: remove diversity content and community pushback could be costlier than political pressure. TL;DR: Pride isn’t gone — it’s in players’ hands for 2025. Whether Jagex regains trust will hinge on its 2026 roadmap.

FF7 Rebirth: All Region Intel
Wanted to make a way to easily access & read all the world/region intel you can get in Rebirth so here's a giant post for that. Everything below the cut.
GRASSLANDS
Kalm: A Recent History
This humble town serves as a transport hub for the grasslands, hence the distinctive bailey built for the monitoring of commercial and private traffic. During the war with the Republic of Junon, Shinra saw fit to occupy Kalm, due to its stout fortifications and strategic value, and it has remained under company control ever since.
As it lacks a reactor of its own, Kalm is reliant on Midgar and its pipelines for a steady supply of mako, which is stored in a large tank for regulated use. This arrangement allows the residents to enjoy both modern conveniences and a healthy environment—a combination that has attracted many new residents of late.
Ten years ago, a significant portion of the town was “damaged,” though Shinra quickly intervened and carried out a comprehensive reconstruction effort. Details regarding the incident and the extent of the destruction are sparse.
Flora and Fauna of the Grasslands
In stark contrast to the barren, mako-ravaged outskirts of Midgar, the ecosystem of the grasslands remains relatively unscathed. Streams flowing from the central mountain range nourish the lush meadows below, which sustain a diverse range of species. Ranchers and farmers also benefit greatly from this bountiful environment.
Vast wetlands make up much of the southern region. In days past, boats and chocobo carriages were a common sight, but as most goods are now transported by sea or air, traffic through the wetlands has steadily decreased. Moreover, as an immense, man-eating serpent dubbed Midgardsormr has been sighted in this area of late, few dare to brave the old trails. Even those capable of evading the gargantuan snake may yet fall victim to one of the many inescapable quagmires.
The Mythril Mine: Changing with the Times.
A natural passage through the mountains between Junon and the grasslands, this mine has long served as a rich source of mithril. The mineral boasts an exquisite shimmer and remarkable strength, and was historically used to fashion the very finest weapons and armor, but it fell out of favor after Shinra developed superior synthetic materials.
After the mine was closed, the Republic of Junon converted it into a tunnel for the general public, allowing travel to and from the grasslands. The glistening mithril deposits drew regular sightseers as well. Following Shinra’s triumph over the republic, however, the tunnel has been effectively abandoned. Various sections have fallen into disrepair, and the depths are host to untold dangers.
JUNON REGION
The Rise and Fall of the Republic of Junon
The people of Junon were once largely seafarers, who only returned to the shore to peddle the bounty of the ocean. Unlike other communities that settled in a single location and gradually expanded their territory, these sailors preferred the freedom of the open sea, and over time banded together with like-minded souls to form a unique society.
As a republic, they repurposed a flotilla of large vessels to construct a floating city that would serve as the center of their trade network. Having forged a robust infrastructure, they then set their sights on uniting the disparate peoples of the world.
Though Junon ushered in an era of economic and cultural prosperity, it was not to last. Shinra’s revolutionary mako technology put paid to their ambitions, and their once proud city now slumbers beneath the waves.
Junon: The Fortress City
Having conquered the Republic of Junon, Shinra constructed a nigh-impregnable fortress on the coast in the heart of their enemy’s former territory. Powered by the world’s only underwater mako reactor and equipped with a colossal cannon capable of firing as far as Wutai, the stronghold resembles a vast battleship, risen from the deep to defend the eastern continent.
Junon is a city composed of multiple levels, each of which is lined with uniform buildings that were originally designed to serve the needs of military personnel. After the war with Wutai, some were converted into hotels and retail outlets, and the arbor and airport now see a constant stream of civilian visitors.
Military exercises are still conducted frequently, however, and should the need arise, defense countermeasures can be deployed at a moment’s notice, transforming the city in to a fortress, ready to repel would-be invaders.
COREL REGION
Costa del Sol: A Recent History
Though Costa del Sol is now a renowned beach resort, it was once home to a string of humble fishing villages. However, when relations between Shinra and the Republic of Junon began to deteriorate, Shinra annexed this portion of the coast. After the war, the company designated the area for redevelopment, transforming it into the must-visit location for avid sunseekers that it is today.
Costa del Sol offers vacation packages to suit any budget, allowing travelers from every corner of the globe to savor the idyllic beaches. Plans that include a trip to the Gold Saucer have proven particularly popular.
Corel: A Tale of Decline
Coal was in high demand in the days of the republic, and the wealth of Mt. Corel drew miners from far and wide. Though the work was hard and dangerous, the laborers banded together to overcome their difficulties, forming a close-knit community in the process.
Alas, the advent of mako saw the price of coal plummet, spelling disaster for the people of Corel. As they struggled to find a way forward, Shinra proposed the construction of a mako reactor, and after much debate, the villagers accepted the offer.
The reactor was constructed with astonishing haste, but just prior to being brought online, it was torn apart by an immense explosion, and has been left in ruins ever since.
The Rise of the Gold Saucer
The tale of the Gold Saucer began with a Shinra employee named Dio, who convinced the company to build a museum called the Reliquary. Although it was doomed to failure, Dio was not to be deterred, and he set about founding the world’s largest theme park, which he first conceived as a small-scale fairground.
In the wake of the Corel Mako Reactor explosion four years ago, plans were set in motion to revitalize the local economy. Hearing this, Dio decided to relocate his fairground to the region, eventually transforming it into a state-of-the-art entertainment complex.
Now known as the Gold Saucer, it is powered by several modular reactors, which are responsible for the surrounding area’s accelerated desertification. In light of this, the reactors are now run at minimum output, in an attempt to mitigate further damage to the environment.
GONGAGA REGION
Gongaga: A Recent History
In ancient times, Gongaga was settled by descendants of the Cetra, who lived in quiet seclusion. The region was largely ignored by later kingdoms and empires, until the Republic of Junon thought to expand its influence westward. They soon discovered, though, that the expense of establishing trade routes through such dense jungle far outweighed the benefits of reaching the small communities there, and elected to instead construct an airstrip and little else.
When war erupted between the republic and Shinra, people the world over were impacted to varying degrees. Those in Gongaga were the rare exception, as being so far removed from the theater of war meant that they were not subject to forced conscription, nor were their villages ever host to the bloodshed.
Life in Gongaga
The village of Gongaga lies at the heart of the humid jungle, where many species of moss, fern, and mushroom thrive. Its people have a long tradition of self-sustenance, growing only enough produce and raising only enough livestock to support their collective. Though the village is by no means commercially enterprising, the Gongaga mushroom endemic to the region is renowned for its rich aroma, and commands a high price.
Gongaga’s fortunes took a turn for the worse following an explosion at the nearby mako reactor. Though much of the jungle was temporarily declared a disaster area, due to its elevation position, the village itself escaped the worst of the fallout—a small mercy considering the devastation wrought below.
The Gongaga Mako Reactor Incident
First generation mako reactors based on the one built in Nibel are prone to malfunction due to flaws in the pressurization system’s design. This, however, did not deter Shinra from installing them at various locations throughout the world, including Gongaga.
The company’s failure to follow their own inspection and maintenance procedures led to a disastrous explosion which claimed the lives of many villagers. Acknowledging its part in the incident, Shinra dedicated a monument to the victims.
This accident was not an isolated occurrence, though, as at least one other reactor is known to have exploded in a similar fashion. Stranger yet, Shinra has been investigating alleged sightings of gigantic life-forms known as “Weapons” near the remains of these destroyed mako reactors.
COSMO CANYON REGION
Cosmo Canyon: Environmental Conditions
Cosmo Canyon is located in the south of the western continent, where countless valleys and caverns have formed in the red clay. In ages past, seismic activity forced this soil to the surface, where it was later eroded by the surging lifestream below, giving the region its unique appearance.
Throughout the year, the canyon sees very little rainfall, and the temperature variation between the plateaus and gorges is considerable. As such, it is extremely difficult to grow crops, and the mere act of survival is a daily struggle. Nevertheless, the canyon is a prime destination for students of planetology. In addition to scholars and devotees, many tourists can also be found here, seeking to take in the “mystical” air. In more practical terms, the arid conditions and lack of cloud cover facilitate the observation of celestial bodies, making the canyon popular among astronomers.
Life in Cosmo Canyon
The founders of the canyon’s eponymous village made use of the naturally formed caves, and following the emergence of planetology, more and more people found themselves drawn to the place. The makeshift walkways and tent-like domiciles have only increased in number as the settlement continues to expand to this day.
Rather than rely on mako, the villagers built an array of windmills, and each home is equipped to store the generated electricity. A leading planetologist, Bugenhagen, introduced this form of wind power to Cosmo Canyon, and it is said his technical marvel was inspired by the ways of the Cetra.
When it comes to nutrition, the villagers’ diet consists mainly of grain and legumes grown around the village, supplemented by game meat obtained with traditional hunting methods.
The Cetra and the Gi
In the distant past, the Cetra made contact with the Gi, entities who could not return to the lifestream. Pitying their plight, the Cetra build altars to commune with and calm these tormented souls in the hope of finding a means to coexist peaceably.
Over time, the Cetra grew increasingly aware of the dire fate that would befall the planet, and resolved to entrust their knowledge to the people of Cosmo Canyon. These teachings would become the foundation of planetology, which continues to be refined through research and discourse even as it is spread throughout the world.
When the Cetra finally departed Cosmo Canyon, none remained to provide solace to the Gi, who in their festering anguish and rage were driven to turn on the villagers. Many brave warriors gave their lives to beat back these vengeful spirits, entombing them in their prison once more.
NIBEL REGION
Mt. Nibel and the Birth of Mako Energy
It is said that beyond the desolate, jagged crags of Mt. Nibel lies the land of the dead, and few dare to approach its slopes. Indeed, even plant life struggles to find a foothold here, and with tumbling boulders and rockslides a constant threat, the locals see little reason to make such a perilous journey.
Many of the mountain’s caves are filled with mako vapor, and the inner reaches contain mako springs and naturally formed materia. Shinra’s search for a new energy source led them to Mt. Nibel, and its abundant supply of mako made it the ideal site for the world’s first reactor.
Although it played an instrumental role in the proliferation of mako energy, the Nibel reactor’s time in the spotlight was brief, and it now operates at greatly reduced capacity.
Nibelheim: A Recent History
In the shadow of the jagged formations at the foot of Mt. Nibel, the village of Nibelheim had little to offer the outside world. However, their quiet existence would change dramatically with Shinra’s discovery of vast reserves of mako within the mountain.
The company’s efforts began with the construction of Shinra Manor on a plot of leased land. It was there that the head of Research and Development, Professor Gast, and his assistant, Professor Hojo, pioneered studies on mako and Jenova.
Shinra’s financial investment delivered the people of Nibelheim from poverty. Their newfound happiness and prosperity would be short-lived, though, as the entire village was burned to the ground and countless innocents slaughtered by Sephiroth.
A perfect reconstruction of Nibelheim was later erected on the site in secret, and now serves as a treatment center for victims of mako poisoning.

When your Character is in a Situationship
Tumblr media
Situationship - an uncommitted, undefined romantic relationship between two people—meaning that those in this type of relationship have not established what they are to each other.
While it may share some similarities with a friends-with-benefits relationship, the two terms do not mean the same thing.
A friends-with-benefits relationship is when friends engage in casual sex without taking on the commitment aspect of a relationship.
A situationship, on the other hand, lacks a formal label.
A situationship can be temporary (like if you just started going on a few dates with someone and it’s too early to place labels on the relationship), or it can sum up the entire relationship.
Signs of a Situationship
There are several telltale signs that you might be in a situationship, including:
You deal with inconsistent behavior. Inconsistency is a common trait of situationships. You don’t know when you’ll see or hear from each other next.
You don’t use labels. Situationships lack definition by nature, so you and your partner likely haven’t sat down to discuss whether you want to be in a serious relationship.
You have no long-term plans. There is not much progression in situationships, so you may not talk about the future often or at all.
You haven’t made it exclusive. Since you haven’t defined the relationship, you and the other person involved might be seeing other people.
You lack an emotional connection. In a situationship, you likely don’t have deep discussions. Instead, you may have a more physical- or surface-level connection than an emotional one.
Pros of Being in a Situationship
Being in a situationship isn’t necessarily bad; it all comes down to personal preference and what a healthy relationship means for you in your current stage of life. Pros of this arrangement include:
You can see other people. If you want to see other people, you have the option.
You have independence. Since you aren’t in a serious relationship, you only have your own wants, needs, and schedule to consider.
You have no commitment. You can have fun with the other person, enjoy their company, and be intimate with no-strings-attached.
Cons of Being in a Situationship
Situationships come with a few cons, including:
You could end up heartbroken. If you develop feelings in a situationship and the other person doesn’t, it can lead to conflict and heartbreak.
You deal with ambiguity. Situationships may leave you feeling like you’re in limbo, questioning your relationship status, which is unsettling for some.
You lack stability. Since you aren’t in a committed relationship, the other person is not a consistent source of support, and you likely don’t make regular plans with them.
How to Get Out of a Situationship
If you find yourself in a situationship when you don’t want to be, follow these steps to get out of it:
Evaluate your situation. The first step to getting out of a situationship is to understand whether you’re actually in one. You may simply be in the early stages of a new relationship that only requires you to communicate with your partner what you want.
Understand why you’re unhappy. If you feel your relationship isn’t progressing the way you want, consider why you’re unhappy. For example, if you have a purely physical situationship, perhaps you want to look for something deeper in the future. Outlining exactly why the situation does not serve you will help you avoid it moving forward.
Decide what you want. Determine whether you want to be in a real relationship with the other person and whether you want to date them exclusively. Decide what outcome you want and why, so you can communicate that to your partner.
Communicate with the other person. Tell them what you want and how they can meet your needs. Be open and honest with them, and hear what they have to say in response.
Move forward. If you end the situationship, move forward confidently and think about how to avoid a similar situation. Now that you understand your needs, you’ll be able to communicate them upfront to potential partners.
Talk with a relationship expert. If you find yourself in a pattern of undefined romantic relationships that negatively impact your mental health, consider speaking with an expert or a relationship coach to help you break the cycle.

"The subject of humanity has been a hotly debated one for a long time, in fact. For example: Ofiuco is not "human" but she had developed "humanity". One doesn't simply need to be a human to exhibit it. So under what circumstances might that "humanity" be tested? Perhaps... an event that must be survived at all costs? And can this humanity be retained if one's container is changed?"
It finally seemed like the cold winter's grasp was finally beginning to loosen its hold over the city. How was it that an island that had to be so relatively close to the equator even experienced winter in the way that it did? A question that plenty had asked themselves who lived in the city and yet the only answer was just to not worry about an answer.
At the stroke of midnight on that Friday night things began to seem odd. Had a new chill set in? Things became very cold very quickly, with frost gathering on windows and a terrible blizzard raging. But to make matters worse? Power across the entire city flickered and immediately shut off and communications were powered down. It became concerning because how would they brave the cold if it continued? Maybe things would look better in the morning?
It might have. If the morning ever came.
6am came and went. Then 8am. And 10am. And while the blizzard had finally calmed and opened up the sky, the Northern Lights that had emerged merely continued to dance across the starry sky. The city was frozen over and blanketed in an excess of snow. Everyone's lives were clearly at risk.
CHOOSE ONE... A GUARDIAN.
Everyone's phones should have been drained of their power and yet a voice called out from the phone's speaker. The screen would flicker to life it taken out, and options were displayed. Creatures. Animals. Were these supposed to be the "Guardians"? What did they do? Could they help? Who had sent them? With little other option, many began to make their choices and were rewarded with a warmth that allowed them to go on.
But with time? More than mere warmth would be provided to them. Accepting the help of a Guardian came with an undisclosed cost.
How much of your humanity are you willing to shed to survive?
-----------------------------------------
BRR... WHAT'S GOING ON?
Haunted by an eternal night, the entire island has fallen to a deep, dangerous cold overnight while simultaneously being buried in a heavy snow. The city's power and communications systems have also gone down with no signs of being restored anytime soon, making things rather dicey since temperatures are dropping as low as -37F (-35C). Adding to all of this? Abilities don't seem to be working. Needless to say this is a matter of survival.
But the city and the surrounding branches have become a proper arctic biome. While powerless buildings still tower high above, wildlife typical of a frozen climate that couldn't have even existed before thrives. And the night sky is filled with stars and the Northern Lights when not covered with snowy clouds.
And so it's a good thing that a mysterious benefactor has prepared a way for the citizens to survive. Taking temporary control of the otherwise inactive cellphones, they offer the people a choice. Choose a Guardian. And beneath that text? A list of animals that thrive in cold climates.
Upon selecting one of these animals you'll receive a number of benefits:
the extreme cold feels significantly less taxing, making surviving easier
you'll be able to sense others who have chosen a guardian nearby, making it easier to find and collaborate with others
you'll be able to sense sources of food, although in some cases it will need to be hunted
This all sounds convenient. Maybe a little too convenient for there not to be a trade off and, typical of the antics of the Stars, there is. As the minutes, hours, and days tick on it becomes difficult to ignore the signs. Perhaps your ears become similar to those of the Guardian you have selected, or maybe you grow similar fur at first. But with time these traits spread and worsen. And some instincts begin to develop that could hardly be considered "human". Seemingly you have borrowed the power of your guardian...
...But at the risk of becoming the very same critter you've selected. Because what can survive better in the extreme cold than a creature who evolved to thrive within it?
FAQ
Which animals can be chosen for our characters? You can select any animal so long as they survive in cold climates normally! Things like arctic foxes, snowy owls, seals, whales, penguins... You aren't limited to mammals alone so long as you abide by that rule when picking them! However they must be real animals that actually exist, not things like dragons or yetis.
How quickly do the side effects occur? It's up to you! You could have them onset immediately, or have them develop gradually over the event's course. There's no timeline beyond what you personally would like to do with them!
Can we choose more than one animal? Can we switch them mid-event? You cannot select more than one animal at a time. However you can swap your Guardian one time during the event if you aren't feeling it, or if you want to try something else.
What if my animal is already not a human and aren't affected by the cold enough to select a Guardian? The cold is so deep that it should be enough to bring about substantial risk for most citizens even if they aren't made uncomfortable by the cold itself. Machine lifeforms would function less efficiently, and even the more adept to the cold might struggle with all of the snow. If you need a reason to make your character select one, you can always speak with some friends or contact the masterlist for an idea in a worst case!
Do I need to select a Guardian for event participation? You don't! You could have your character not pick one at all. That said, you could also have them pick one and not show any side effects, as...
What is the minimum and maximum amount of side effects we can inflict on our characters? As mentioned previously side effects aren't required and you could leave your character unaltered! On the opposite end, you could completely shift your character into their Guardian animal if you'd like. Anything in between is fine too, so go as little or as hard as you would like!
"Instincts" are also mentioned. What would those entail? Essentially these would be things that would make them act more like the animal they are becoming. Like burying food in the snow to keep it safe, or hunting using certain methods if their animal is a born hunter. Again, these are optional and you could shift your character into an animal's form while retaining their human sense.
So powers aren't working during this event? Nope! But any weapons your character has retained are still available!
Would characters who are non-biological in nature gradually become biological? That's up to you! If that's an angle you'd like to explore with your character becoming flesh and blood then feel free!
Will the event have a part 2? No! However we will be posting "weather events" over the event's course that will change the conditions in the city in extreme ways temporarily, be it a blizzard or an even deeper chill. It isn't necessary to acknowledge these if you don't want to though!
When does the event end? The event ends at 11:59:59PM on Friday, March 29th.

*ೃ༄Climate
Nirin's climate is primarily desert, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The desert terrain around Nirin is arid, with high temperatures during the day and cooler nights. These microclimates allow for the growth of plants and agriculture that would otherwise be impossible in the surrounding desert.
ೃ⁀➷Desert Climate:
The majority of Nirin's landscape is a desert, with vast stretches of sand dunes, rocky terrain, and rugged mountains. Rainfall is sparse, and the land can be harsh, with intense heat during the summer months and cooler, more temperate conditions in the winter. The absence of consistent rainfall makes water a precious resource, and the people of Nirin have adapted by developing advanced water conservation methods. Outside of these microclimates, the landscape of Nirin is dominated by rugged mountains, vast sand dunes, and the expansive desert itself, which remains harsh and unforgiving. The desert areas surrounding Waterlight City are arid, with minimal plant life and little natural water sources, except for the few oasis pockets sustained by underground springs.

The canyons, especially around Waterlight City, create natural microclimates that allow for the cultivation of desert-adapted plants and even more lush vegetation in certain areas. These areas experience cooler temperatures in the summer and more stable conditions due to the natural protection provided by the canyon walls. The canyon's unique geography supports more diverse ecosystems compared to the surrounding desert, creating conditions favorable for agriculture and the cultivation of desert-adapted plants. These microclimates make the region an important agricultural hub within Nirin, especially for crops and plants that would otherwise struggle to survive in the surrounding arid landscape.

ೃ⁀➷The Hanging Crescent Arena:
One of the most significant public spaces in Nirin is the Hanging Crescent Arena. This grand amphitheater hosts the Desert Games, an annual event that celebrates the region’s traditional sports and cultural performances. The arena’s design is unique, featuring tiered seating that wraps around a central open space. This architectural wonder is carved into the side of the canyon, making use of the natural rock formations while offering a dramatic backdrop for the games.
ೃ⁀➷Public Squares and Markets:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heart of Waterlight City, and other smaller towns, are their public squares, where locals gather for commerce and social interaction. The markets are vibrant, with artisan shops offering handcrafted goods such as textiles, pottery, and jewelry. These squares often have a central fountain or gathering area, surrounded by stalls where local produce, spices, and meats are sold. The area encourages not only trade but also cultural exchange, with people coming together to share food, stories, and traditions.
ೃ⁀➷Integration with Nature:
Many of the public spaces are designed with an emphasis on merging the urban environment with the natural landscape. Green spaces, shaded courtyards, and outdoor communal areas are built with the intention of allowing residents to enjoy both the city life and the surrounding desert’s beauty. Public parks and gardens often feature native desert plants, providing a connection to the landscape while also offering respite from the heat.
*ೃ༄Transportation
ೃ⁀➷Horseback Travel:
In the rural regions of Nirin, horses are the primary mode of transportation. Their ability to traverse the desert terrain makes them invaluable for farmers, traders, and travelers. The horses are trained for endurance and can navigate both sand and rocky terrain with ease.
ೃ⁀➷Off-Road Vehicles:
For those in more remote or rugged areas, off-road vehicles are commonly used. These vehicles are specially designed to handle the harsh conditions of the desert, with large wheels and reinforced frames that can withstand sandstorms, rough roads, and extreme heat. These vehicles are often used for long-distance travel between villages or for transportation of goods.
ೃ⁀➷Canyon Trails and Transportation in Waterlight City:
In Waterlight City, the extensive network of canyon trails is used to connect different districts. These trails are well-maintained, and people often travel on foot, horseback, or by bike. The city’s design encourages walking and cycling, and the trails provide scenic views of the canyon and the surrounding desert. The trails are also used for more practical purposes, such as transporting goods and materials between districts. People can also go by boat in the waterlight city lake.

ೃ⁀➷Modern Transport:
For those seeking faster or more contemporary transportation options, sports cars and motorcycles are a common sight in Waterlight City. These vehicles are suited for the city’s wide streets and roads, often modified for speed and style. Skateboards are also used for short-distance travel, particularly among younger residents who enjoy the thrill of gliding through the urban landscape.
.ೃ࿐Cultural Differences
*ೃ༄Golden Waterlight Butterflies
The Golden Waterlight Butterflies are an iconic part of Nirin’s cultural and natural heritage. These butterflies, which hover near the shores of the Waterlight Lake, are particularly revered for their beauty and role in the region’s history.
ೃ⁀➷Symbol of Light:
In the past, before the advent of electricity, the people of Nirin used these butterflies as natural lights, placing food outside during the night to attract them. The glowing butterflies would light up the landscape, providing a soft, mystical illumination. This practice is now seen as a romantic symbol of the old ways, though many still hold the butterflies in high regard and see them as symbols of hope, guidance, and the enduring spirit of nature.
ೃ⁀➷Cultural Significance:
These butterflies are often incorporated into various cultural practices, from religious ceremonies to artistic expression. They might be featured in local dances, where performers mimic the delicate movements of the butterflies, or they might be seen in jewelry and tattoos, representing the fleeting beauty of life and nature’s ability to shine even in the darkest moments.
*ೃ༄Pets
Wealthier families in Nirin can own exotic pets such as Waterlight Lions, which are highly trained and treated with the utmost care under strict laws.
ೃ⁀➷Waterlight Lions:
Waterlight Lions are one of the most prized animals in Nirin, particularly among wealthier families. These lions are known for their regal appearance, golden fur, and piercing eyes, and they are often seen as symbols of strength and leadership. These lions are carefully trained, with only the wealthiest individuals able to afford the resources needed to care for them. Training these creatures requires a high level of skill, patience, and respect for the animal, and there are strict laws that govern their treatment to ensure they are not mistreated or exploited.
ೃ⁀➷Strict Laws:
Owning a Waterlight Lion or other exotic pets in Nirin comes with a set of regulations that must be followed. These laws ensure that the animals are treated humanely and that their natural habitats are respected. Exotic pets are often seen as a sign of high social standing, and their care requires significant financial investment, making them a symbol of the wealth and power of the family that owns them.
*ೃ༄Military
Nirin is home to one of the major military bases, emphasizing the province’s role in training and defense. Military training is a key part of Nirin's economy and culture.
ೃ⁀➷Economic Role:
The military is one of the primary economic drivers in Nirin, with many industries and sectors tied to defense. The base serves as both a training ground and a production center for military technology, including weapons and defense systems. As a result, the province has a large number of people working in military-related industries, and much of the local economy is dependent on the maintenance and expansion of these sectors.
ೃ⁀➷Patriotism and Honor:
Military service is also a deeply ingrained cultural value in Nirin. Honor, courage, and sacrifice are highly celebrated, and military parades and public ceremonies are frequent occurrences. The people of Nirin view their military as a reflection of their strength and resilience, much like the desert plants and animals that thrive in harsh conditions.

PSA: Free Software
Reading this may really save your time, privacy, and money! Reblog or share to spread awareness!
Folks often use software that’s expensive and sometimes even inferior because they don’t know there are alternatives. So to those unfamiliar: basically, free and open-source (FOSS) or "libre" software is free to use and anyone can access the original code to make their own version or work on fixing problems.
That does not mean anyone can randomly add a virus and give it to everyone—any respectable libre project has checks in place to make sure changes to the official version are good! Libre software is typically developed by communities who really care about the quality of the software as a goal in itself.
There are libre alternatives to many well-known programs that do everything an average user needs (find out more under the cut!) for free with no DRM, license keys, or subscriptions.
Using libre software when possible is an easy way to fight against and free yourself from corporate greed while actually being more convenient in many cases! If you need an app to do something, perhaps try searching online for things like:
foss [whatever it is]
libre [whatever it is]
open source [whatever it is]
Feel free to recommend more libre software in the tags, replies, comments, or whatever you freaks like to do!
Some Libre Software I Personally Enjoy…
LibreOffice
LibreOffice is an office suite, much like Microsoft Office. It includes equivalents for apps like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, which can view and edit files created for those apps.
Tumblr media
I can't say I've used it much myself yet. I do not personally like using office software except when I have to for school.
OpenShot
OpenShot Video Editor is, as the name suggests, a video editing program. It has industry-standard features like splicing, layering, transitions, and greenscreen.
Tumblr media
I've only made one video with it so far, but I'm already very happy with it. I had already paid for a video editor (Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro), but I needed to reinstall it and I didn't remember how. Out of desperation, I searched up "FOSS video editor" and I'm so glad I did. There's no launcher, there's no promotion of other apps and asset packs—it's just a video editor with a normal installer.
GIMP
GNU Image Manipulation Program is an image editor, much like Photoshop. Originally created for Linux but also available for Windows and MacOS, it provides plenty of functionality for editing images. It is a bit unintuitive to learn at first, though.
Tumblr media
I've used it to create and modify images for years, including logos, really bad traceover art, and Minecraft textures. It doesn't have certain advanced tech like AI paint-in, but it has served my purposes well and it might just work for yours!
(Be sure to go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Colors. I have no idea why that's not enabled by default.)
Audacity
Audacity is an audio editing program. It can record, load, splice, and layer audio files and apply effects to them.
Tumblr media
Audacity is another program I've used for a long time. It is not designed to compose music, but it is great for podcasts, simple edits, and loading legacy MS Paint to hear cool noises.
7-Zip
7-Zip is a file manager and archive tool. It supports many archive types including ZIP, RAR, TAR, and its own format, 7Z. It can view and modify the contents of archives, encrypt and decrypt archives, and all that good stuff.
Tumblr media
Personally, I use 7-Zip to look inside JAR files for Minecraft reasons. I must admit that its UI is ugly.
Firefox
Firefox is an internet browser, much like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Safari. While browsers are free, many of them include tracking or other anti-consumer practices. For example, Google plans to release an update to Chromium (the base that most browsers are built from these days) that makes ad blockers less effective by removing the APIs they currently rely on.
Tumblr media
Aside from fighting monopolies, benefits include: support for animated themes (the one in the picture is Purple Night Theme), good ad blockers forever, an (albeit hidden) compact UI option (available on about:config), and a cute fox icon.
uBlock Origin
As far as I know, uBlock Origin is one of the best ad blockers there is.
Tumblr media
I was on a sketchy website with my brother, and he was using Opera GX's ad blocker. Much of the time when he clicked on anything, it would take us to a random sponsored page. I suggested that he try uBlock Origin, and with uBlock Origin, that didn't happen anymore.
Linux
Linux is a kernel, but the term is often used to refer to operating systems (much like Windows or MacOS) built on it. There are many different Linux-based operating systems (or "distros") to choose from, but apps made for Linux usually work on most popular distros. You can also use many normally Windows-only apps on Linux through compatibility layers like WINE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't have all four of these, so the images are from Wikipedia. I tried to show a variety of Linux distros made for different kinds of users.
If you want to replace your operating system, I recommend being very careful because you can end up breaking things. Many computer manufacturers don't care about supporting Linux, meaning that things may not work (Nvidia graphic cards notoriously have issues on Linux, for example).
Personally, I tried installing Pop!_OS on a laptop, and the sound output mysteriously doesn't work. I may try switching to Arch Linux, since it is extremely customizable and I might be able to experiment until I find a configuration where the audio works.
Many Linux distros offer "Live USB" functionality, which works as both a demo and an installer. You should thoroughly test your distro on a Live USB session before you actually install it to be absolutely sure that everything works. Even if it seems fine, you should probably look into dual-booting with your existing operating system, just in case you need it for some reason.
Happy computering!
