In some more sad news this week we mark the passing of IDRU Judiciary Chairman Brian Baird. Brian aged 77, passed away peacefully last Friday at home surrounded by family. Brian was a Life Member of Waratahs Rugby Club and a former District President of the IDRU. Brian joined the IDRU Judiciary Panel in the early 2000’s serving as Chairman for the best part of the last ten years. His Funeral will be held at St Marks Anglican Church, 429 Crown Street Wollongong, on Friday 4th March at 2.00PM. RIP Brian Baird.  

UTS Gordon prevailed in difficult conditions at the Kiama Sevens on Saturday. With rain an issue throughout the day especially during the Finals, Gordon slugged it out with North Sydney in driving rain for a narrow 12 – 10 victory to take the 50th Kiama Sevens title. Despite the conditions Tournament Organisor Mark Bryant was pleased with the day’s events telling the Illawarra Mercury, “It was a great day though, especially to have been able to keep the competition going through the COVID period and be able to be here this year without a lot of the restrictions. To be in our 50th year, it’s a great celebration for the community.” Results – Mens Final, UTS Gordon 12 North Sydney 10. Bowl Final, Shoalhaven 17 La Parouse 10. Womens Final Buraneer 17 Sydney Uni 0. Mens Plate Final Manly 40 Gunghalin 0. Mens Country Final Parkes 38 Albury Wodonga 5. Womens Country Final Albury Wodonga 10 Batemans Bay 10, Albury Wodonga took the title being the first try scorer of the Final.  

The Rugby Rumor mill is picking up momentum. Word has reached the Rogues ears that unless there is a marked improvement in attendances at training at a couple of Wollongong City based clubs very soon, there may well be discussions for the creation of a joint venture for season 2022.

The Waratahs performances so far this season has been a pleasure to watch. This year’s version of the NSW side has shown a much different attitude and approach to that we have been exposed to in recent years. There has been plenty of effort and drive in the opening two games with the side showing that they can indeed play this game the way it is meant to be played. The side looks fitter and stronger and consequently their basic skills execution has markedly improved. I reckon we are going to see plenty of good Rugby from this group going forward. The narrow loss to the Reds last week could be put down to a couple of tactical decisions made at crucial times of the match that swayed things toward the Reds. Also another outstanding performance from James O’connor made a huge contribution to the ultimate outcome of the match. Three out of five for The Rogue last week and there are some really interesting matches to consider this week. I’m going to go with the Pasifica guys in their first appearance this week against the Crusaders. The Rebels were pretty ordinary last week but I’ll still go for them to beat The Drua. The Force and The Reds could go either way but I’m leaning slightly towards the Reds. I think The Blues would have learnt a few lessons from their loss last week, so I am going for them to win against the Chiefs. I think The Hurricanes can keep The Highlanders winless. The Brumbies and Waratahs should be a cracker. For no other reason than that the match is in Canberra, I’m going for a narrow Brumby win. My Tips again: Pasifica, Rebels, Reds, Blues, Hurricanes, Brumbies.

hello, all! i’m glad you’re here today. for starters, i just wanted to give you all a brief introduction to tarot — from the throughout history to what we know today — and why it’s used. if that interests you or you feel called to continue reading, please do so!

a brief history

when we look at tarot cards, we’re looking at playing cards that are centuries old.

we can trace tarot cards back to europe during the later 1300s. the suits were batons or polo sticks (wands today), coins (pentacles today), cups and swords. these ancient decks were small and hand-painted, so few survived to the 21st century. tarot decks during the 14th century and onward until the 18th century were used as a card game.

however, tarot began to evolve as others started to use the deck for cartomancy — divination or fortune telling. a few notable names — antoine court and jean-baptiste alliette (more commonly referred to as etteilla) — were responsible in part for popularizing esoteric tarot in paris. etteilla is credited with first using tarot for occult purposes in the 18th century.  

so what about today? now, tarot is mainly used for insight into the future, present, or past. it’s also used to improve on or hone in on your natural intuition, which i’ll elaborate on further down.

how tarot works

people generally use tarot cards for readings. a tarot reading involves two people: a seeker and a reader. in other words, someone who’s looking for answers and someone who can provide insight to those answers by interpreting the cards.

often, the seeker will shuffle the tarot deck and cut it. the reader will select cards and lay them into a spread (such as past, present, and future). the spreads that a reader chooses has meaning, just like the cards themselves have meaning. the reader combines both the meaning behind the cards and the spread’s meaning to answer the seeker’s question (or to provide general insight on a topic, like romance or careers).

what i (and others) use tarot for

i’m certainly not a mystic. i can’t see into the future and i definitely don’t claim to. so why do i use tarot? and what good is it if i don’t know the future?

it’s perhaps best said by joan bunning, a tarot expert whose insight i routinely use (note: she’s linked here and below, under the sources heading). she says: “tarot is a tool to explore the landscape of the unconscious.”

we routinely ignore our unconscious mind, yet it profoundly affects everything we do. 

the drawings or visuals on tarot cards tap into our unconscious mind. for example, if you pick a random card out of a tarot deck, what do you see and what story does it tell?

if we’re looking at the judgement card, i could examine the image and say that the people in the card long for judgement and they love it. good or bad, people like to be judged because it gives them affirmation, be it positive or negative. that’s one story i see when i look at the judgement card. some people might say, the nude images of people represent foolishness, and they’re foolish to welcome the judgement of someone who feels mightier and higher than all the rest. that’s another story.

depending on the particular moments in our life that have shaped us, the stories we see will vary. when you’re making up a story for a card or interpreting a card, you’re tapping into the unconscious mind. every reader sees the cards differently in their own personal way, but their interpretations are also backed by understandings that other readers have found valuable. we rely on our own perception to interpret.

another important facet of tarot is that no reading is mechanical. by that, i mean no reading is unfeeling or impersonal. a reading isn’t just a random assortment of cards because if you think about the concept of randomness, it’s a lot more complicated under the surface.

if you’re a reader or if you decided to read this post, think about this:

a reader decided to study tarot

a reader bought a deck and decided to learn how to use it

a reader can shuffle or cut cards at any point

were all of these moments random? with every step, multiple people where involved. something made you want to study tarot, so you went out in search of information and a deck. someone sold you a deck and you made the decision to learn about it. when you’re shuffling a deck, you don’t stop shuffling the deck at the hand of another — you stop shuffling the deck on your own time, when you want to, at a particular moment in time. at every moment, we’re actively involved.

similarly, there’s a message in everything, but only if we’re open to receiving that message and being perceptive.

when you sit down for a reading or when you’re giving a reading, where does the meaning come from? the meaning should come from a part deep inside ourselves, where we’re aware of the divine source of meaning. without getting too bogged down in the weeds, i mean to say there’s a part inside of us that knows the right answer.

it could be the voice in your head that talks you through right and wrong decisions, and leads you down the “good” route. you could call it your soul, your inner guide, the higher self (as henry david thoreau mercilessly harped on), or whatever feels comfortable and right to you. whatever it is, everyone has one.

as joan says, you might be able to ignore your inner guide, but you can’t ever destroy it — it’ll always be there.

our conscious minds are very clever, but aren’t capable of full awareness. that’s where the unconscious mind comes in.

when we’re using our conscious mind, we might feel like certain events and occurrences happen at random and are forced onto us by chance. think of a time when something when wrong and you felt it was out of your control. for me personally, i might think of a time when my local bus — during its final route of the day — sped right by me without stopping, like i was invisible. what was i supposed to do? it was a random event, totally out of my control. or was it?

when that event happened — even though i didn’t choose to make the bus drive right by me — i still made choices that ultimately impacted the catalyst of that “random” event.

i decided to leave my house to catch a bus at night

i chose to wait at the bus stop, even though there weren’t any lights

i chose not to use the flashlight on my phone because it was at 2%

i chose not to jump up and down and frantically wave my arms as it barreled past me, down the street

now, these are choices i made and choices i failed to make. some relate to the fact that the bus driver didn’t see me and drove right past, and some of the choices relate to larger issues. although none of the choices i made are wrong or right, they all affected and contributed to something one might call a “random” event or a random stroke of bad luck.

when we access our inner guide or our unconscious mind, we experience life differently, with an entirely new mindset. you might find that life is more joyful as you explore all the beautiful, scattered elements that make up your life. you also might find peace of mind knowing that so many gears are turning to make sure the clock of life runs smoothly.

you don’t need tarot to access your inner guide or to improve your intuition. but it can be very helpful for those who have trouble accessing their unconscious mind (like me). for my uses, tarot doesn’t predict the future — it’s just a tool i use to develop my intuition and personal growth.

The Australian War Memorial has launched a collection of artifacts and family heirlooms from the Holocaust. Survivors and their loved ones are the first to experience the moving exhibition, revealing stories of sadness, horror, and hope for the future. What struck me most was what Naomi Shaw said, "No matter what happens to you, there is an opportunity if you have faith and have courage...and you look towards the beauty of the world." Naomi is the duaghter of Henryka Shaw, a Holocaust survivor.

An investigation is underway into how three baboons managed to escape and go on the run at a major Sydney hospital. It raised questions about risks to the public after it was revealed the animals had been used for medical experiments. The Animal Justice Party states it is a reminder that millions of animals are still being used in experiments in Australia. Primates at the Medical Research facility undergo different scientific experiments in a bid to find out more about human conditions. I found it really cute when Health Minister Greg Hunt said “I have to say, my heart was with the baboons.” It may be funny to hear, but this story poses more serious questions especially regarding animal rights.

Celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Brad Williams as well as sports stars are uniting for a Brisbane boy with a disability after a heartbreaking video captured his battle to overcome bullying. Williams' campaign for the family to visit Disneyland has attracted nearly $200,000. The NRL's Indigenous players reached out to the young Queenslander and invited him to this weekend's All Stars game.

Quaden’s story really moved me, as one of my advocacy is anti-bullying as well. It’s really great that Quaden got to meet NRL’s biggest players. There was even a fundraising to send his family to Disneyland! But he turned the offer down.

There were emotional scenes in Bungendore, Canberra as a convoy of fire crews arrived with the fridge donated by Claire Hooper, which will be the centrepiece of an exhibition at the National Museum. It became an icon and a way for the community to reach out to all Emergency Services personnel. The firefighters are providing cool relief for crews on their way to the fire grounds. Mardi Gras is Australia’s Pride March and all the stories of empowerment are moving.

Heather Garriock says she is prepared to embrace the unknown ahead of her final game as coach of Canberra United. What inspired me here was Garriock’s attitude. She said when one door opens, another one opens. Now we all know that’s not new, but to hear it from someone who will no longer coach the team she used to lead, it’s inspiring. She may have been sacked, but she stays positive.

A state memorial has been held to recognise the devastating toll of the bushfires that ravaged NSW. Of the 33 people killed during the national bushfire emergency, 25 were in NSW including six volunteer fire crews and American aircrew. Six pairs of boots were a symbol of the six firefighters who died while battling the blazes across the state. Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O'Dwyer were killed in December when a fallen tree hit their tanker. Samuel McPaul died after his truck was flipped over in a fire tornado. Captain Ian MacBeth, First Officer Paul Clyde Hudson, and Flight Engineer Rick DeMorgan Jr died in a plane crash near Cooma in the Snowy-Monaro region last month. Among the 35,000 people who came to pay their respects to bushfire victims today were those who inquired about joining the NSW Rural Fire Service. An independent inquiry and Royal Commission will now investigate the causes and lessons to be learned from the unprecedented bushfire season.

Queensland Coroner James McDougall, who was tasked with examining the 2016 Dreamworld tragedy, found systemic failures to follow safety procedures contributed to the deaths of Roozbeh Araghi, Luke Dorsett, Kate Goodchild, and Cindy Low on the Thunder River Rapids ride when it malfunctioned. McDougall said Dreamworld had a reputation as a modern, world-class theme park but its safety systems were rudimentary at best, stating an accident is inevitable given the state of safety practices. He recommended changes to the regulatory framework to include annual risk assessments at rides, addressing the issue of a shortfall of experienced ride engineers, and to have the conduct of the engineer who inspected the rides assessed by the regulatory body. He has referred Dreamworld's parent company, Ardent Leisure, to the Office of Industrial Relations. Ardent Leisure says it is committed to implementing the recommendations and will create a memorial garden to honour the memory of everyone affected.   

This is not inspiring, but it struck me because I am a huge fan of theme parks and I just hope each theme park commits to their safety procedures. Read more here.

As for interviews, I’m featuring this one with Tan Le, founder of EMOTIV. What struck me most was when she said “the brain has the ability to continually rewire, reprogram itself and that creates a lot of opportunities for healing.” Le has been fascinated by the untapped potential of the human mind since Le was a kid. She explained the emerging field of brain-computer interface or BCI. EMOTIV has developed these headsets or 'brainwear' to facilitate these interactions. Moreover, I have been inspired with the story of Rodrigo Hubner Mendes, a quadriplegic man who drives a Formula One using his thoughts. Le states they worked with Globo, a Brazilian broadcast TV network to create a campaign around respect. Le discusses the challenges she encountered in developing EMOTIV headsets and how she overcome them. She thinks in Australia, people tend to focus on the hero's story. She also mentioned different limitations in studying brains.

Another one of my favourites is Jules Schiller of ABC Radio Adelaide! He is my compere crush haha he is naturally hilarious, with every story connecting to listeners in a personal way. We’re also both big fans of The Carpenters, and we both hoard books haha. One difference we have though, is he had a lot of girlfriends and I never had a boyfriend yet haha. Sonya Feldhoff used to joke Schiller had 800 girlfriends. Haha.

Demo

Every now and again, a legendary text is born. We live in this time of legends, with the email I have dubbed ‘This Week in Demolition’ being a new hit on campus. It’s easy to see why. Forget profile pics, personalised URLs and segmented journey mapping. Forget the spin, too: this is stripped down, thumped out text with no frills, promising a step by step account of the removals, diversions, interruptions and demolitions coming to the University’s largest ever construction site. This week, for example, promises high-voltage diversions and ground levelling.

It’s compelling reading. Think Northern Territory News without the crocodiles. It’s a dose of straight talking that our colleagues from overseas would see as the forte of Australian English. Nothing beats a bit of demo and dirt for a yarn, you might say.

It’s straight by necessity. Noone wants to be left wondering whether ‘urban regeneration’ means steel cutting, pile driving or the threat of your power being cut off when you are trying to write a book or to teach a class. It’s a salutary lesson in treating our community as adults, calling a spade a 600kg front loader and driving a, well, wrecking ball through cyrusian prose.

It started with the understandable anxiety of not knowing. Some people may think that university campuses flow with rivers of gold, but the shabby truth is that many staff and students try to work and to study at their best in buildings that weren’t even chic in the 1970s. They have never known what it is like to work in a new building, let alone be near the construction site for one. Ramp that demolition up to four buildings in quick succession—with the precise removal of Canberra scourge, asbestos—and indicate that six new buildings and a carpark are coming.

Chances are that you won’t know what that sounds, smells or feels like, and that you are not thrilled at the prospect. But if you have a simple, blunt account of what to expect, chances are that it won’t be quite as bad as you imagined it to be without that information.

The demolition and ground works we have commenced follow stages that are common to building sites around the world, and echo a strengthened commitment to sustainability. Stage one involved the extremely careful removal of asbestos, including some friable materials. This was done under vacuum seal in some cases, and always under the watchful eye of what is called a ‘building hygienist’. The second stage involved stripping out the interiors of the buildings, which speeds up building demolition. A key commitment in the second stage is to recycle and reclaim as many of the removed materials as possible.

This turns out to be a critical step, as government estimates put half of our country’s landfill as arising from building rubble. Recycled concrete and bricks can be used as a base for pavements and roads. Asphalt can come back in new road surfaces. Recycled metal can be melted down and reused; recycled timber can make an appearance in structures and on facades. Dirt can be moved around to level a site. The more we recycle, the lighter our ecological footprint with the new build. Our goal is not simply to do no harm in the new construction; recycled materials, wood, water runoff capture and reuse and a suite of clever approaches to electricity management will see the site become more ecologically friendly than at present. We leave the environment in a better state than we inherited it.

That’s minor comfort if you have to work with the sound of steel sawing outside of your window right now. But I’d rather be honest about that, note that demolition is a finite activity, and look forward to a better environment. That’s good sh•t, as Australia’s own demo man, Laurie Vautier, would say.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a hairdresser. My aunt was a hairdresser and my best friends Mum was a hairdresser. It looked like fun, chatting with people all day and cutting all their hair off. But once I got to college I knew better. I took a class in psychology and one in small business. I knew I was going to be an entrepreneur way back then. My first attempt in business was was with a modelling business. That failed miserably because I clearly had a lot of growing to do, plus the passion wasn’t there. What I did take from this experience in the modelling industry was a passion for the camera and being able to get a message across to the world. That gave me the drive to go to Uni and study journalism. This I loved! But after 10 years working in tv it was time to explore something else when I was unable to get a visa to support me working in then USA. So I studied health. And here I am today. We all have a journey in life in which we learn and take our learnings onto the next job or person. Life teaches us in every aspect whether it be negative or positive. It’s a lesson to better us for the next part of the journey. It’s how we treat that lesson that gives us a life of enlightenment or one of pain and struggle. On the road again.

It’s awesome to be on the road, but it’s not so awesome to be on it just for the sake of it. So I have tried to take stock, and I still am, while squatting on my upper level bunk bed in a pretty dirty and smelly hostel room in Sydney. Next to a cockroach. But about that later.

Soon I am about to return to Amsterdam to finish my degree. I have decided that 2019 will be the year of finishing stuff. Finishing this chapter that has lasted for as long as I’ve pursued my Bachelor’s. Possibly finishing my stay in Amsterdam, my life as a student, and an entire stage of my life characterized and driven by mindsets and motivations that now have served their time and need to give way to new ones.

In a nutshell:

My drive to pursue a degree abroad was because: a) I still wanted to undergo the path of tertiary education, partly because of family instilled values, partly because of societal pressures, partly because of career prospects, and mostly because I wanted to belong to the same group as all of my amazing friends with their amazing degrees. (Don’t get me wrong - I’m very ambitious in terms of personal and professional development, I don’t just necessarily believe that an institutionalized, governmental tertiary education is the only or the best way to go.) b) I wanted to do it abroad partly because the degree programs are more diverse, partly because I was inspired by my peers who flung themselves all over the planet to study, and mostly because I can’t stay put in a jar and thought it a clever way to combine and maximize education, experience and travel. All about efficiency here.

During these last two-three years I have learned (finally!) to think and eventually to say out loud and believe that I am: a) courageous - I am not afraid to take risks for what I believe in; b) hard-working - I am more than willing to bust my arse off for something I believe in; c) resourceful - I have found ways where there seemed to be no way, taken risks, and gotten forward; d) strong - I have pulled myself together in ways I would not have imagined, and I have learned to stand up for my values.

Finally, I see myself as yes, faulty like we all, but at the same time as strong. Before, I have been perhaps saying it to myself like a mantra, but now, for the first time, I believe it.

In conclusion, this journey has not been about getting a degree for me, but about proving to myself that I am all of the above things, that I am worthy, and that I really am fully in charge of my own growth. With a history of poor self-esteem and a strong inclination towards pessimistic thought patterns, it’s an achievement. I feel that as a result I am more clear, focused and confident about the direction I want to continue in. Anyway, that - the continuation - is something scary for a lot of graduates with an arts degree. So before I start planning for it, which in my case equates with worrying about it, I want to make sure that I will allow myself the time to finish what I have started diligently.

For this, I have to thank some of the amazing people I’ve met on my way. I’ve been doing my thing and driving myself for ages, but it took them to take a step back and see what I have done, what I am doing, what I could be doing. Most of them might not even even guess that I’m writing about them here, since most of them have not knowingly tried to help me on in any way. They have just been their honest selves, and have really inspired me with it. Thank you, friends.

So 2019 will be a year of finishing, a year of not stressing myself into madness about the next step. I will work for it, sure, and work hard. But I will also allow myself the time to let all of the lessons I have gotten to settle and to reveal themselves. Instead of charging head-first into new adventures, my aim is to take steps with meaning, incorporate what I have learnt, and to avoid the fall back into old patterns. So here’s not to new beginnings, but to finishing off old ones with diligence!

Now, about the cockroach, or - cockroaches. By now, there’s two. The best I can do is not to look at them, because they’re everywhere, and to think that by tomorrow I’ll be far away from this place. Westend Backpackers Sydney - 13 floors of cheap, broken, and filthy, all serviced by a single elevator on heavy over-duty. What can I say - at least it is centrally located. I needed cheap accommodation for two nights, got it, and I am outta here by tomorrow. Sydney itself is more subtropical than I imagined. It’s warm, and it’s raining. Gentle rain, the kind that lasts for hours, and will continue for days. The smells in the botanical gardens were amazing due to that rain. The riverside is so lush and green. I walked around for hours before heading to Frankie’s to enjoy the happy hour offer on some of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Yum. Sydney is gorgeous. I’m really looking forward to exploring it in the coming days.

As you can see, I just went to see the iconic Opera House and its many faces on my first evening here.

Canberra, on the other hand, was not a city for me. Exactly why - I will explain briefly in the next post. And then probably go on raving about The Blue Mountains - gorgeous!
