Blogtober Day 4 - Redraw a Funny Panel
Wishbone has tons of funny panels, so had to pick one with him. Also loved his Halloween costume, so really wanted to draw him in it again.
Also the old panel (which is 4 years old now???) for reference is here:

BLOGTOBER 10/3-10/4/2024: BOWLING 4 EVA and SAID OF A DEER THAT SHEDS ITS ANTLERS
Last week I hosted two nights of shorts from the Final Girls Berlin Film Festival. It was a lot of fun, but I have to confess that I'm usually a little bit shorts-averse; I just feel like they tend to come out like little cocktail jokes with a windup and punchline, which can run the additional risk of being too messagey. A story needs more than 30 minutes to fully develop, and I think your uh Fibonacci sequence or whatever needs to run longer than that to feel seriously engrossed. Obviously I don't think there shouldn't be any shorts. THE BABADOOK started out as a short, SMILE started out as a short, among other things I really like--and I did see some things this year that gave me that feeling of a preamble to something bigger.
Tumblr media
BOWLING 4 EVA is a surreal black comedy that I could not stop thinking about after I saw it. Filmmaker Aelfie Oudghiri packs a lot of interest into this fifteen minute movie about a suicidal teenager whose family shuttles her between boarding school and a psychiatrist's office to try to fix her. She gets prescribed a "loneliness inhibitor" that produces hallucinations, specifically attached to the only thing that gives her life any meaning--bowling.
Tumblr media
The gruesome and weirdly horny climactic dream sequence in which she confronts an anthropomorphic bowling ball that embodies all of her dark thoughts is really great, but I loved the exploration of how the protagonist's alienation and affects her family life, her social life, and her online life. I saw it as a sharp refutation of the idea of the "male loneliness epidemic", which concept somehow suggests that only men and boys experience sexual frustration that can compound mental health issues. There's also an interesting layer about the specific culture of rich Koreans living in Queens, but I think you'd need a feature film to work all that out. Maybe they'll make one, but meanwhile I have discovered that you can watch this cool movie online! Hooray:
Probably my favorite film from the second night was a Belgian movie called SAID OF A DEER THAT SHEDS ITS ANTLERS. I'm noticing a new trend in horror where in recent years the focus has been on grief, and now it's shifting toward elder care. There were a few examples just in this program, including the award-winning OLGA'S EYES and the mysterious SPOOR, which is one of the strangest things I've seen in a while, but Salomé Crickx's SAID OF A DEER looks at the subject through an amusing metaphorical lens.
Tumblr media
The film takes place on the day of ritual culling of elder adults in a rural community (although the practice could be universal, who knows!). While most of the young adults celebrate killing their parents with a sweaty basement kegger, one woman deals with the consequences of giving her mischievous folks a few more hours on earth. The point of the film comes into focus when some of the young people playfully gang up on a peer who is approaching middle age without kids or marriage prospects, meaning there is no one to kill him when it's time; this seems to carry the same stigma as having to go into a nursing home without enough family to look after you. It's a smart, funny film, and you should see if it you can! I won't be surprised if Crickx turns out a feature in the near future.

DAY 4 - It’s just a test run
I know what I did wrong when I started this month; I failed to plan! I just realised that now.
Having an idea or a general concept is not the same as having a plan. At the end of Last month I knew blogtober was coming up, and I knew I wanted to do it. My memory might have played a trick on me because I remember how easy it was, maybe thats not entirely correct though. Back in 2021 when I did it I wasn’t constrained by any overreaching concept. I knew I wanted to write and that was it. I wanted to write because: I used to love writing, but I hadn’t done much of it in years. I wanted to write just to clear my own thoughts. I wanted to see if I could commit to writing every day for a month because iivo.com had been sitting without any content for years and I wanted to change that.
The same pattern could be said with streamtober. I love gaming, I love streaming, and I wanted to see if I could do this type of streaming regularly
You might get the pattern now: So, when this October came along, I thought to myself, why not apply te same principal to video creation. Let’s challenge myself to push out videos every day
Okay, iivo but where do the “it’s just a test run” and “plan to fail” come in?
As I mentioned in the first entry this month, I’m doing this for me. To learn something. This week is about finding my writing form, about finding a plan that let me do what I set out to do. Then plan it, which I will write about in tomorrow’s blog post

Man of Style: Charlie Hunnam
Man of Style: Charlie Hunnam
I don’t remember seeing Englishman Charlie Hunnam before he appeared as outlaw biker and tough guy antihero Jackson “Jax” Teller on the FX Series, Sons of Anarchy. Aside from the characters he plays in movies or on TV, Charlie is gorgeous and sexy as hell. He has a style that’s all his own, which is why he is this month’s “Man of Style”.
In SOA he mainly wore jeans, a t-shirt or button-down…

Blogtober Day 4: Top 3 Most Interesting Vampires
So last year, I made this post about my top 3 favorite vampires. This year I thought I’d make it the most interesting vampires!
Mary from Dracula 2000
Dracula 2000 is a movie with the premise that Van Helsing was unable to fully kill Dracula, instead imprisoning him in an elaborate crypt and drawing blood from him regularly to strengthen himself. When theives inadvertently release Dracula, Van Helsing must track him down to New Orleans where the vampire is searching for a young woman: Mary. Mary and Dracula have a connection that has plagued Mary her whole life. Spoilers: Mary is Van Helsing’s daughter, and due to taking Dracula’s blood, Van Helsing’s own DNA contained Dracula’s. Mary thus fascinates Dracula, who transforms her to see what might happen, and then releases her from being a vampire out of remorse. I find that Mary carrying Dracula’s DNA as well as her fathers, being transformed into seemingly a stronger and more powerful vampire than others, and then being able to return to being human was a really interesting plot!
Rosalie Cullen from Twilight Saga
Admittedly, almost all of the Cullens aside from Emmett and Edward are pretty interesting with such strange backstories. Alice is up there for me, but since we know so little about her there’s not much to say. Rosalie, though, fascinates me with her backstory. I love that she exacted revenge in such a highly dramatic way–and that there’s clearly no regret. The Cullens may not have approved of killing humans, but they didn’t stop her from getting back at the men who raped and murdered her. I especially love the way she describes killing her ex-fiance in a wedding dress.
The Dean in Carmilla the series
Did you really think I could get through a whole post on vampires without mentioning Carmilla? The Dean is Carmilla’s “mother” in this version of the story, dean of the University of Silas where the events take place. In the first season the Dean is never seen only mentioned as a figure of dread and terror on campus with infinite power. She possesses Laura’s body at one point to threaten Carmilla, and takes on a human body for the duration of the series as it is slowly revealed that she is far more than just a mastermind vampire.
So there you have it, my top 3 most interesting vampires! Let me know in the comments below if there are any vampires you’ve read about/seen that continue to fascinate you.

I decided to put 5 items on my bookish bucket list for autumn:
1. Spend a day doing nothing but reading in my pjs snuggled in bed.
2. Tidy my bookcases!
3. Get a plant for my bookcase.
4. Read an Agatha Christie book.
5. Make a scrapbook for all the wonderful art I have from book subscription boxes!
I have made myself a spread in my bullet journal for this prompt because these are all things that…

With Halloween looming on the horizon, I thought it would be fun to share my top 5 Favorite Horror Movies of all time. Anyway, paranormal horror aside, I’m down for some blood, gore and weirdness. Keep reading to see my favorite…

Blogtober Day 7 – Autumn Bookshelf
I love looking at pictures of peoples’ bookshelves. BookTok and Bookstagram have me so jealous. But I love my little corner. But it needs a little help. Dear Goddess! What has happened to my shelf. Oh yeah. Working 60+ hours a week for 2 months. Well, guess it’s a good time to redo the shelf. OK. The 4 shelves on the left are all my horror, witchy, and fall themed books. Sorted alphabetically…

What Happened To Blogtober Day 4?
I wish I could say I was just so super busy that I never found time to write, but that wouldn't be entirely true; it's probably even far frome the truth.
While I did have stuff on my plate it wasn't close to a full day.
The truth is I started procrastinating, then I started thinking about why I wanted to blog, then I looked at what I already posted and started doubting myself. So I'm taking this day to reflect a little on that. I came up with the idea of maybe editing the previous post which kinda gave me the idea for another post.
Anyone else recognise a restless mind like this constantly weaving new ideas from an original idea, only not to see it true?
To be continued
