I am so excited to share this graphite piece, which is the cover of "A Man Named Shuku." The book is available for free download!
From the Positions Press Website: "A Man Called Shuku illustrates the tenuous relationship between a Japanese vice governor and his Chinese translator during the former’s tenure in Japan-occupied Manchuria. Originally serialized in 1940—at the height of the Manchukuo regime—Ushijima Haruko’s narrative unveils the tensions and obscurities of the colonial encounter, casting doubt on the empire’s official proclamations of ethnic harmony in the region." Thank you to Akhil and Sunee for bringing this project together!

Ahoy! A little something something I worked on last year and now it’s finally up for grabs! I was waiting for the perfect moment to reveal this for you and today seemed like a good day to revisit my favorite pirate! Ugh, so hot here today. A swim with the mermaids would be so nice! 🧜🏻‍♀️
Written by the awesome @laurendestefanoauthor and cover illustration by yours truly, The Lost Ones is the second book in The Dark Ascension Series and is already available in bookstores everywhere :)
Happy Saturday! 🐊🏴‍☠️

ToG covers part 1
Guys, I’m so happy to show you what I have been working on for a year.
Last year, I made one of my passion projects: A cover for Throne of Glass. ToG is one of my favorite series, and I knew some people weren't a fan of the original covers. Many people prefer no characters on the covers, so I made a cover that was an object-based cover with many symbolism and fancy gold foiling. Luckily @atouchofmagigdesigns loved my cover concept, and we began working on the remaining seven covers.
You can read about the symbolism on the @atouchofmagicdesigns page.
The preorder begins on Oct 4!
I will be back with the remaining four covers soon.

Still playing catchup. The second prompt for Imagined Book Cover 2023 was "Monster Parade." A Halloween themed book is still on my wish-list for books to get to illustrate. Someday it'll happen, I know it. lol

How I Make Book Covers
One topic I haven’t covered yet is how I create my book covers. This part of publishing can be challenging, especially if you’re like me and don’t have the budget to hire a professional designer. Now, I’m not saying my book covers are perfect, but they get the job done. By sharing my process, I hope to help those of you who are figuring things out on your own.
My Book Cover Creation Methods
- AI-Generated Images: This can be a great tool for creating unique backgrounds, characters, or a combination of both. While I know there’s some debate about using AI for art, it works well for me. I make sure to use a free program, like mage.space, that allows commercial use of its images—this step is crucial to stay within legal boundaries.
- Unsplash: This website provides a variety of images that can be used for commercial purposes. Always double-check the license for the specific image you choose to ensure it’s free for commercial use and doesn’t violate copyright laws.
- Canva: Canva is my go-to tool for setting the right dimensions for book covers. It also allows me to layer different images to create a cohesive design.
- Cut-Out Images: I like to cut out certain elements from images and layer them onto backgrounds I’ve chosen. This gives me more control over the final look and helps me create covers that fit my vision.
- Make It Fit the Story: One rule I always follow is ensuring my book cover matches the story. A cover should give potential readers a sense of what the book is about before they even open it.
Conclusion
I hope sharing my methods for creating book covers helps you, whether you’re looking to create your own or just want to experiment with designs. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to do it—as long as you’re happy with your creation and you stay within legal boundaries, that’s what matters.
And if you’re artistically inclined, you could even create your covers from scratch! Personally, I’m not that skilled at drawing, so I stick to these methods.
Happy designing!

A book cover illustration I did for a client in Germany. The book was a bibliography about the authors family history. The client wanted me to take inspiration from their family crest (three pomegranates on a shield) and play with the idea and imagery for a family tree for the book cover illustration.

Here’s one of my latest book cover designs! I painted these illustrations a while back, but they felt just right for this personal project. The story? A young orphan and his newfound wyvern family set off on an epic quest to save the world from dark sorcerers. ✨🖤

Sometimes just giving people time and consideration can change how they treat everything around them. A soft smile, a little gesture, a small handmade gift... Or just time spent together, can make a sour person open their heart, and turn sweet.
