"This is the first issue of Aspen, the Magazine in a Box. In calling it a 'magazine,' we are harking back to the original meaning of the word as 'a storehouse, a cache, a ship laden with stores.' That's what we want each issue to be.
Since it comes in a box, our magazine need not be restricted to a bunch of pages stapled together. We can do what editors have wanted to do since Benjamin gave his name to Franklin Gothic -- we can put in all sorts of objects and things to illustrate our articles. And each article can be designed as a separate booklet with the size, format and paper dictated by the article itself.
For this first issue, we've started out with a rather dignified format, but who knows what the next issue will be! Perhaps the booklets will be done in the manner of illuminated manuscripts or Japanese scrolls. Perhaps each will be a different size and color. Perhaps they'll include blueprints, a bit of rock, wildflower seeds, tea samples, an opera libretti, old newspapers, jigsaw puzzles. In short, 'Aspen' is the first three-dimensional magazine."
(from the publisher's letter)

What You Cast Out: A Tale From Little Egypt - Chapter 2 is now available on my Ko-Fi page!
Tumblr media
Chapter summary:
Tracey Rutledge didn't murder her professor.
There's no way that she could have physically done it, not in the way that Doctor Alderman died. But as Officer Gabe Nelson begins his own investigation into the case, the stories that turn up about the only suspect get more and more damning. Some say that she and Alderman had been lovers. Others say that they were mortal enemies. Only Doctor Miles Pertwee says that she's innocent, but even he admits that it doesn't look good.
While Gabe starts to wonder whether or not he should have stopped Chief Perkins from arresting her, Tracey herself struggles with memories that the murder brings back to the surface, memories of her own dark past in Franklin County, Illinois. She also has her own questions about the murder, and she knows that she won't be able to rest without answers.
Meanwhile, Alderman's killer begins a new hunt.
And this time, Tracey is the prey.
For $3 USD, you can download a readable and a printable PDF. Whether you'd like to print it out on your home printer and staple it into a booklet or just read it, you will be able to.
For 5$ USD plus shipping, readers in the US can order a physical copy printed at a locally owned printer and mailed to you by USPS.

Josh MacPhee | Teach or Go to Jail!
“Teach or Go to Jail! is a multi-faceted look back on a 1977 public school teachers’ strike in Franklin, Massachusetts. Through a series of publications and printed ephemera, Josh MacPhee attempts to unpack the strike and engage with questions about what it can tell us about labor and education struggles today. MacPhee traces his family connection to the strike via his father, who as treasurer of the union was sentenced to jail time for refusing to go back to work. The publication reproduces a notebook of drawings the elder MacPhee made from his cell, press and photo documentation of the strike, ephemera, as well as a new interview done with three of the strikers. In many ways a blip in the history of labor unrest in the US, this publication argues the importance of the strike should not be underestimated—not only was it the first strike in modern US history where the rank and file were jailed for refusing to work, but because the union held strong, built solid relationships with the community, and ultimately won almost all of their demands.
Teach or Go to Jail! includes a 60 page, 8-color risograph printed booklet (comprised of analysis, an interview, a timeline of the strike, press and photo reproducitions, and documentation of strike ephemera), a 24 page reproduction of an artist notebook, a reproduction of 6 page corner-stapled info packet originally distributed to parents by the union, and a sticker sheet featuring a bumper sticker and buttons used as part of the strike campaign. All of this is packaged in a pressboard folder with a reproduction of MacPhee’s jail property tag on the cover.” - Booklyn

It can be easy to romanticize our pain and remember our past in an I-did-it-all-on-my-own kinda way. But the truth is, we always have some help. After Hurricane Katrina hit, I went from teaching in my big studio on Franklin Avenue in New Orleans to teaching in my brother’s basement in Silver Spring, MD 😞. All my former clients were displaced, and Skype lessons weren’t a thing at that time. So I had to start my business over completely from scratch 💔. Also... I had no money. Zero. _____________________________________________________________ One of my first new clients was Suga Brown, an accomplished producer and recording artist. She encouraged me to record my vocal exercises and offered to produce my first instructional CD in her studio. I could NOT afford professional studio time, but she never asked for a dime 😭❤️. My first product was... a bit low-budget😅. I printed and placed every label myself. I stapled each booklet and packaged all the orders manually (often shipping behind schedule as a result 🙈). In many ways it was a one-man operation. But, because of @kpreezy, I at least had a quality recording 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽. Fun fact: that’s her playing the keyboard on the sexy intro track 😏. _____________________________________________________________ Moral of the Story: Hold on to your vision. You never know when opportunities, ideas, or incredibly talented/generous PEOPLE will present themselves to help you along your path. Thank you, Kristin 🙏🏽. You really helped me get my start. I’ll do my best to pay it forward. #MemoirsOfAVocalCoach #AApproach #BuildYourVoice #HealYourVoice https://www.instagram.com/p/CALO9tPJ6R_/?igshid=ulohz663h1tt

    “How to
Build a Tiny House
Easily, Cheaply and in Just Days”
Follow my Simple Step-By-Step Plans to Learn How…
Dear Friend,
If you’re interested in building your own Tiny House then this will be one of the most exciting messages you ever read..
Because in the next 3 minutes I’m going to show you how to build your own custom Tiny House for a fraction of the cost of hiring a builder..
And how to avoid all the mistakes of builders that have come before you.
Tumblr media
Hi, my name is Adam Ketcher.
I’ve personally built over 300 tiny houses for my clients.
And I’ve experienced just about every building situation imaginable.
After years of mastering this unique trade, I’d like to personally teach you everything – and I mean everything – you need to know to build your Tiny House TODAY.
So you can save boatloads of money and time.
And so you can give yourself and your family a safe & beautiful home they’ll be proud to call their own!
Like you, I love the idea of Tiny Houses
They’e cost effective… minimalistic… cozy… and they give people like us FREEDOM.
Why pay an expensive monthly mortgage for space you really don’t need?
I say…
Only build what’s necessary, and then go enjoy your life!
It’s worked for me. And it’s worked for thousands of others.
It’s for this reason that I have a sincere desire to help people like you achieve this same kind of freedom.
And I believe it’s why I’ve become one of the most trusted professionals when it comes to this growing industry.
Over the years I’ve learned a lot of lessons.
“But the most important lesson is to get people – knowledgeable people – to guide you on your do-it-yourself project.”
So…
If you’ll allow me, I’m here to be YOUR guide on your important journey.
I’m here to teach you everything you need to build your house with zero hiccups.
…so you can start your build today and feel confident in the process.
…and so you can ensure your security and safety for years to come.
I’ve put everything I know into a program called:
Tiny House Made Easy™
The Ultimate How-To Guide to Building a Tiny House
Tumblr media
This program is the result of my 20 years of building Tiny Houses.
If it can happen… I’ve seen it.
If it can go wrong… it’s gone wrong on me!
But today, I’m considered one of the world’s leading authorities on Tiny House construction.
I’m also well-known in the Shipping Container Home industry – which has many parallels with Tiny Houses.
In fact, I’m so trusted in these circles that I’ve acted as a consultant for companies that would be considered my competition!
So here’s my unbreakable promise to you:
When you invest in this program today, you’ll have the ability to build your own Tiny House…
You’ll build it without headaches, mistakes, or irritating delays…
And you’ll do it for a fraction of what it would normally cost you if you didn’t have me as your guide…
IT’S MY GUARANTEE!
Here Are Some of The Secrets You’ll Discover When You Invest in “Tiny House Made Easy™” Today…
The biggest mistake novice builders make when constructing their Tiny House. And how to avoid it to sidestep years of potential headaches and tens of thousands of dollars.
All the best plans I’ve created during my 20 years as a Tiny House builder. These plans will give you the most bang for your buck when creating the layout of your new home. I usually charge $97 for a mini-booklet of these plans – but they’re included in this program for no extra charge!
The brilliant strategy to get others to buy your land for you – without debt and without giving anything in return. ***This secret alone is worth the full price of the program!***
Need a location to setup your new residence? In chapter 2 I’m going to show you a little-known loophole in the law which will allow you to park your Tiny House for a minimum rent – or in some cases – for no rent at all!
You’ll also get a list of ALL the tools you’ll need to build your Tiny House. These tools are as unique as your Tiny Houses itself, so I’m going to teach you what they are and how to get them for pennies on the dollar.
The mistake 95% of people make when purchasing the trailer for their Tiny House. And how to bypass it to save you a small fortune during this important purchase for your build.
The one place NOT to cut corners on your project. And how investing in this will put you 5 steps ahead of most do-it-yourselfers who try to save money in the wrong places.
What is the most important aspect of your upcoming build? YOUR EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS. That’s why I’m going to show you how to quickly hone the skills you’ll need to pull off your build with minimal mistakes and financial setbacks.
You’ll also get my list of Tiny House-friendly areas. I’ve been putting together this list for over 9 years. And it outlines the ideal locations in the country to set up your tiny house with minimum investment and headaches.
Tumblr media
“I never liked the idea of paying for more space than I needed. And I never bought into the ‘American Dream’ of working a job I hate to buy stuff I don’t need. That’s why I built my own Tiny House. This program was invaluable. I would have spent thousands more without it, and the build probably would have taken me 2-3 times longer. Thank you for this, Adam. It truly was a life saver!”
Joseph Brazell, 45, Ault, Colorado
When You’re Done With This Program You’ll Know More Than Most Professional Home Builders!
You’ll also learn how to get essential parts for your home ABSOLUTELY FREE. And how doing so will shave up to 20% off the total bill of your build.
How to research and examine the load bearing capacity of the soil you’ll potentially want to build on. This is one of the most important parts of a building project. But it’s also the most overlooked. Don’t make the same mistake of others who have failed before you.
The most economical foundational set up for your Tiny House. And why building your foundation in this way will cut the cost of your project by 30%.
My step by step blueprint for how to frame your Tiny House. This is where the rubber really hits the road with this program, and the details I part with are as good as having me right at your side as you raise the walls on your new project.
The little-known trick to massively increase the structural strength of your house and allow it to maintain its integrity if/when it’s being transported.
Do you ever wonder how a trailer-bound Tiny House can possibly run a working toilet? How about water heating and garbage? Well, wonder no more! I outline all your options when it comes to setting up the waste and water heating elements for your new home.
How to set up a gray water system for your waste products as well as how to recycle used water back into your landscaping for maximum use.
The 5 principles of safety when it comes to tiny houses. These are issues most people never think of. And they just might save your life!
How to build a heat reflecting roof that standard homes simply can’t compete with. And how it will save you a stack of money in cooling costs within the first few years of use!
The crafty way to use landscaping to your home’s advantage. Saving you thousands on insulation costs and labor.
The “3 I’s Rule.” And its 3-part blueprint to keep your tiny house warm through those cold winter months.
Tumblr media
“This book was my bible. I actually printed it and it’s dog-eared with highlighting all throughout it. This is the real deal, folks. You’d be crazy not to have it in your back pocket when building your tiny home.”
Ed Walker, 36, Franklin, TN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I bought the program to check it out before buying the material because I wanted to know all the things to look out for and its an understatement to say that it overdelivered. It’s clear Mr. Adams put his heart and soul into this and I recommend it to anyone who wants to build a tiny home or is looking to buy one already built.”
Anthony Lacy, 38, Denver, CO
I Left Nothing to Chance! This Program Will Give You Everything You Need to Build a Seamless Tiny House ON TIME… THE FIRST TIME!
I’m going to hand you a comprehensive list of all the MATERIALS you’ll need to build your tiny house. Save the headache… leave the guesswork to everyone else… you’re going to get a shopping list that will cover EVERYTHING you need to be up and running in the quickest way possible.
Want to double your space? Want to hold on to you comfy king sized bed? Well I’m going to outline the best way to include a sleeping loft. I’ll also show you how to double your sleeping space as storage.
How to make your home thermally efficient with direct gain passive solar heating. And why this system will virtually eliminate all heating costs while keeping your home at a constant temperature (even in the winter)
The best insulation to use for your tiny house – both in efficacy and affordability.
The location on your Tiny House where you must spray an inch of ‘closed cell’ polyurethane foam. And why doing so will both exponentially increase the longevity of your new home by at least 10 years AND save you hundreds of dollars on your heating and cooling bill.
How to wire your house so you won’t have to tear your walls apart if there’s an electrical problem. This handy little method will save you a fistful of dollars if the worst should happen down the road.
The two best options when connecting water to your Tiny House. And the strategy I recommend to get clean, reliable water while keeping the authorities off your back.
How to correctly lay down your plywood sheeting. This is the same concepts of laying bricks in a wall, and it will increase the strength of your home two-fold.
The best kind of galvanized strapping to use on your project. And my method of “CC Hatching” that I didn’t figure out until my 45th Tiny House build. ***This is one of my most precious building secrets!***
The one thing you must do BEFORE your Tiny House arrives to your land. And why preparing this before rather than after will not only save you a mint of money, but save your Tiny House from failing within 10 years of your build.
Tumblr media
“There are very few resources out there that teach you how to build your own Tiny House. Just companies trying to sell you on buying one direct. No, I’m a true red blooded do it yourselfer. And making my own mobile tiny house, in the way that I wanted, with the knowledge to fix whatever goes wrong, with the pride of knowing its my blood and sweat that made it, was the only way I was going to do it no matter what. This resource from Mr. Ketcher is pure gold. He really really knows his stuff and it would have been a nightmare to have build my tiny house without it.”
Geoff Biddulph, 35, Clovis, NM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“If you’re considering building your own tiny home then you would have to be nuts not to get this book. Adam is at the top of his trade, and he parts with all his wisdom in this book. You will avoid a million mistakes with this book at your side. Believe me, the small investment will pay off big time! It did for me.”
Ken Funakoshi, 43, Aina Haina, HI
Let Me Show You All My Secrets to Get Land & Permits While Sidestepping The Nightmare of Red Tape… Paperwork… and Headaches Caused By Local Authorities
How to bypass land & zoning issues by leveraging the compact size of your tiny house to your unfair advantage. This is the smartest way to avoid buying land… renting land… or parking your Tiny House illegally.
My secret way to find land at bargain basement prices. When you hear this one you’ll be heading out the door before you even finish slapping your forehead.
Why your Tiny House isn’t bound to a certain location or zip code. So should you ever need to, you can “move your house” to any new location you see fit.
The one critical question you must ask the city when looking at land for your build. And how their answer will help you determine whether or not a plot of land is right for you.
Why the location of your build influences the price the most. And how to elude extraneous costs by building in zoning pockets the government doesn’t want you to know about.
My devious way to “make good” with zoning authorities to bypass months of headaches and frustrating delays. Trust me, you’re going to want to know this one!
Tumblr media
“Two months after buying this course we were ready to move into our own shipping container house and it was everything we hoped for. It was much cheaper than we expected, and in my opinion it’s better in so many ways, too. I strongly suggest Adam’s course if you’re looking to take the plunge yourself.”
Mike Teunissen, 42, Globe, AZ
I’m also Going to Teach You How to Design Your Tiny House. This is The Funnest Part of the Build! And I’m Going to Pull Back The Curtain to Give You TONS of Great Ideas For Your Project!
You’ll get a myriad of potential floor plans for your new Tiny House. Included are the most widely used designs, but I’ve also included my most popular “personal plans” I guarantee no other program will give you.
How to use optical illusions to give the impression of more space in your Tiny House. This is one of the most overlooked secrets. And those who miss it build their home in a way that looks cramped and cluttered.
One of the biggest issues of owning a Tiny House is STORAGE. I’m going to show you how to double or even triple your storage capacity. And you’ll do it without sacrificing one square foot of your living space!
How to arrange your home design to give you TWICE the space. Leaving plenty of room for a king sized bed and enough storage space for even the most materialistic builders.
The most important “first consideration” when laying out the plans for your new home. Get this one wrong and it could cost you your entire home just a few years down the road.
How to set up off grid electricity… on grid electricity… and the pros and cons of both for your project.
Why windows are one of the most important aspects of your build. And the windows I suggest to make your home thermally efficient and maximally spacious.
Your various options when it comes to your roof and my personal opinions on the best roof options specific to your climate and weather.
If you’re building your Tiny House in a warm climate I’m going to show you how to add radiant barriers into your roofing plans. Including these barriers are like setting up your Tiny House in the shade!
The best landscaping resources for your project. Conventional wisdom is not always economical wisdom. So I give you “outside the box” options to both save money and make your landscaping look sophisticated… unique… and beautiful.
Tumblr media
“I build and sell shipping container homes as wel as tiny houses for a living. I’ve hired Adam on multiple occasions as a consultant. His depth of knowledge is simply unmatched in the industry and his program will show you all the steps you need to take to build a tiny home yourself. But better than that, he’ll show you all the things to avoid (and trust me, there are many things to avoid!)”
Gary Case, 54, Huntington Beach, Ca
So I have to ask…
How much would it be worth to avoid the mountain of obstacles waiting for you when you build your Tiny House?
Hundreds?
Thousands??
The truth is, people just like you are losing tens of thousands of dollars in common mistakes when building their tiny homes without guidance.
Needless to say, this can turn into a VERY expensive project.
So the smartest thing you can do is get an expert on your side right from the start.
Since I’m that expert – and since I love helping do-it-yourselfers like you – I’m going to make you a limited time special promotional offer.
Having a consultant guide you through this process would require an investment of at least $5,000 (and that would still only get you a fraction of what’s included in this program).
But don’t worry, because I’m not going to ask you to spend anything like that kind of money! For a limited time only, I’m making Tiny House Made Easy™ available for only…
NOTE: Tiny House Made Easy™ is a digital product. You will receive access to the entire system immediately after you order – even if it’s 2am!
A puny amount.
Especially when you consider you’re getting ME on your team (that’s over 18 years of trade secrets)!
And well worth it when you consider all the expensive mistakes you’re about to avoid!
EVERYTHING you need to build your own Tiny House is right here in this program.
But you’ll have to act NOW.
The next time you come to this page it’s possible it will be more expensive.
Potentially up to 3X as expensive.
So SECURE your copy right now…
And You’ll Also Get a 60 Day 100% Satisfaction Guarantee!
Tumblr media
Just to make this the easiest decision you ever made, I’m going to include a 60 day, no questions asked, money back guarantee.
That means if you don’t absolutely love this program…
And if you don’t send me an excited email with pictures of your beautiful Tiny House…
Then I don’t want your money.
I’ll refund your full purchase price.
So here’s the smart way to do it…
Don’t decide now.
Get the program… go through it at your own pace… and decide later if it was worth your investment.
When you take this approach, it will be a complete no-brainer, wouldn’t you agree?

Keyword Definition: the Zine
The zine is a medium widely renown for its ability to express individual thought in an unconventional and often subverting manner. Zines can be described as makeshift booklets that can be composed of multiple mediums, such as drawings, pictures, and poetry. More frequently than not, a zine is made to pronounce a personal statement from its maker or team of makers. As stated in Mike Gunderloy and Cari Goldberg Janice’s book The World of Zines, zines tend to be created “for love rather than money, and focus on a particular subject” (Gunderloy and Janice 2). It is due to this passion and purpose within the creative minds of zinesters that this medium has been so thoroughly applied in the creation of modern art. Although the origin of the zine is slightly debated, mostly due to the inconsistency of its very definition by zine creators as well as zine scholars, art historians consider its use to have begun during the Dadaist art movement in Europe amid the 1910s and 1920s when artists promoted collaborations of art and upcoming art shows using self-published leaflets. However, the medium of the zine has served multiple purposes throughout the 20th century and into the present day. According to Susan E. Thomas in her article “Value and Validity of Art Zines as an Art Form”, zines have been used in subjects such as “fandom (science fiction, celebrity, and punk rock), anarchist politics, hobbies, and feminism (the riot grrrl period in the 1990s)” (Thomas 27). Due to the wide range of applications of the zine medium, defining what is considered a zine has been tricky for those who study this mode of expression. As defined by Richard A. Stoddart and Teresa Kiser in their work “Zines and the Library”, zines can be “loosely defined as self-published magazines” (Stoddart and Kiser 191). Even though this definition may sound vague, because of the history and apparently endless scope of applications for the medium, it seems to be the most accurate.
As a somewhat modern medium, the zine has had a history of constant artistic evolution and change in purpose. When looking at the zine as a true artistic medium, it can be understood that the elements that define what is a zine are present in early 20th century experimental art movements, such as Dadaism. Due to the independence of the artists in these movements, artists “such as Francis Picabia (391), Marcel Duchamp (The Blind Man), and Kurt Schwitters (Merz), are viewed as art zine influences because they self-published” (Thomas 31). Self-publishing, then, and in agreement with Stoddart and Kiser’s definition, can be thought as a defining feature of the zine. Yet, most people involved with the medium recognize the beginning of the zine as being in the 1930s and 1940s, a time when fans of science fiction started compiling short stories and sometimes accompanying illustrations into short booklets. These booklets were referred to as “fanzines” and from them the current term “zine” is derived (Stoddart and Kiser 191). However, these fanzines do not resemble what is known today as the zine. Although they are self-published, they tend to lack the quantity of mediums held within them and the DIY (do-it-yourself) sentiments that mark the zine of today (Stoddart and Kiser 192). As the zine moved through the 1960s and 1970s, it became more recognized as a medium in underground subcultures as a way to self-express and share expression with others. At this time, the zine expanded its reach into the, although experimental, popular art scene in the United States and had many notable contributors, such a Andy Warhol (Thomas 31). Later on in the 20th century, the zine became a staple in avant-garde music scenes. In these spaces, musicians, such as Kim Gordon, Daniel Johnson, and Billy Childish (Thomas 32), would create and sell zines involving their artistic visions within music and applying them to the zine format. As the zine continued to persist into the current day, it became an outlet for socially oppressed or underrepresented groups, such as people of color or LGBTQ+, to spread personal, political, or social messages within their communities. Now, the zine can be found in online formats and new technologies have made it easier than ever before for zinesters to scan and spread their work (Gunderloy and Jance 157). Many promoters of the zine medium consider this latest development to be critical in stamping the zine as a relevant medium which should be used to study truthfully the climate and sociological facts of the present day.
Due to the intricate history of the zine, many creators and scholars have debated its definition. While some apply the term zine to absolutely anything self-published, including Benjamin Franklin because of his use of an independent printing press (Stoddart and Kiser 191), others are more skeptical about what defines a zine and tend to relate the term to what is understood as the modern zine with existent features such as multiple mediums and purposely unedited work. Depending on the purpose of a work, too, zine makers and those who study the zine tend to have disparities in which works are zines. Some consider DIY informational leaflets or promotional pamphlets to be separate art forms from the personal zine made simply for self-expression. As a result of the complex history of the zine and its fluid application as a term used to describe works with many differing purposes, the definition of a zine has become less and less elaborate to some and more specific to others depending on the purpose and time of a work. What is agreed upon, however, is that all zines must be self-published works. It is this key feature that remains within all definitions of the zine and which is at the heart of their creation.
No matter when one considers the birth of the zine to be or what elements one considers are necessary for a work to be considered a zine, it can be understood that the zine is a critical medium in tracking social history. Without self-published mediums, what is left for historians to study about the contemporary age is filtered through corporate media and what remains for social-based studies may not be entirely accurate. The zine has allowed entire underground subcultures to form and political movements to spread. Zines give a voice to those that mainstream media ignores. When it comes to the medium of the zine, it should not be ignored. Countless zine enthusiasts and scholars are pushing to bring more zines into academic spaces and libraries. It is necessary for this art form to be preserved if society is still to value the emotions, opinions, thoughts, and ideas of the individual.

Lincoln Forgeries
“What is a forgery? It is the bringing forward something in writing or in print purporting to be of certain effect when it is altogether untrue….If you come forward with a letter purporting to be written by me which I never wrote, there is [a] forgery.” — Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln-Douglas debate at Charleston, Illinois, September 18, 1858
In the more than 150 years since Lincoln’s death, many talented forgers have “come forward” with letters and other documents supposedly written or signed by “A Lincoln.” The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection holds a collection of such items, purchased as known forgeries as examples of the forgers’ “art.”
This bound volume of the Utica Christian Magazine from 1813-14 contains 13 forged Lincoln signatures—one on the first page of each issue of the magazine and one on the front flyleaf. The volume was owned by well-known Lincoln collector John E. Burton, who believed the signatures to be genuine and noted that Lincoln “evidently treasured his few books or he would not have been so careful to sign or initial each.” Burton apparently didn’t find it strange that the sixteenth president “treasured” an evangelical Christian magazine that was published when he was four years old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This copy of the Gardener’s Almanac for 1850 also bears a forged Lincoln signature on its cover.
Tumblr media
A letter purportedly written by Lincoln to his brother-in-law, Ninian W. Edwards, from City Point, Virginia, on September 2, 1862, notes the appointment of Rev. William Hunter as chaplain for the 109th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which had begun organizing in the fall of 1862. The regiment recruited only enough men to form a single company, however, so the attempt to form the 109th ceased, and the recruits were transferred to make up Company I of the 113th Regiment. The 113th regimental roster lists Joseph Morris as chaplain, serving from September 16, 1862, to July 6, 1865. Not surprisingly, this forgery is not found in the Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln. The identity of the forger is not known.
Tumblr media
Another unidentified forger created this generic “note of introduction” on Executive Mansion stationary.
Tumblr media
Louis A. Warren, the first director of what is now the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, purchased several forgeries produced in 1934 by an unidentified forger. The “Champaign Circuit” document below is a booklet of 10 pages purportedly written in “Lincoln’s hand” and is, according to Warren “an exceedingly fine example of the forger’s art.”
Tumblr media
Another of the 1934 forgeries was created on chemically treated paper to give it the appearance of age.
Tumblr media
One of the best-known examples of Lincoln forgeries may be those produced from items owned by William P. Brown. Brown served briefly as Mary Todd Lincoln’s coachman and then claimed to possess a number of books, maps, and other items given to him by the former first lady in 1866. Around 1930, Eugene Field II and forger Henry Stickles approached the 93-year-old Brown at his home in Michigan. The two men convinced Brown that he needed sign each item and to have all of them notarized swearing to their authenticity. On August 13, 1933, a notary in Muskegon County, Michigan, added a statement to each item above Brown’s signature attesting that the item had been given to Brown by Mary Lincoln and that “the signature is genuine.” Field and Stickler then purchased the items from Brown and took them to Chicago where Stickler forged “A Lincoln” on each one. Potential buyers soon suspected—and then confirmed—the signatures were forged. This “signed” photograph and engraving of Lincoln, pocket Geological Map of Ohio, and 1848 map of North American are among those forged items.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps the best forger of Lincoln documents was Joseph Cosey, who created documents “by” Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, and others in addition to Abraham Lincoln. Over his career of two decades, Cosey created hundreds of documents that fooled the experts. His forgeries were so good, they have become items of value in their own right and have been exhibited at the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress. This lengthy legal document titled “The People v The Auditor of Illinois” may be the best of them all. It was purchased by the Lincoln collection as a forgery for $75. For it, Cosey used 19th-century paper he had cut from a manuscript genealogy volume in the New York Public Library and ink made from iron rust filings. It is a prime example of the forger’s mastery of Lincoln’s handwriting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosey’s talent as a forger did not make him rich. He spent his life in New York City flophouses addicted to alcohol and drugs and selling his forgeries for whatever dealers offered, as high as $50 or as low as $2. He was in and out of prison for a variety of crimes—motorcycle theft, check forgery, carrying a concealed weapon, grand larceny. But he was not arrested for historic document forgery until 1937 when he tried to sell a “Lincoln” document to a New York stamp dealer. He was sentenced to three years in prison, served less than one, and continued to forge documents into the 1940s. He died in 1950. His forgeries, however, live on.

Booktrek
Clive Phillpot
Clive Phillpot has been a tireless advocate for the artist’s book for more than 40 years--both as a critic, curator and editor, and in his tenure as director at the library of The Museum of Modern Art in the late 1970s, where he built the library’s collection of artist’s books and mapped out the field with influential essays that traced its ancestry and distinguished it from seemingly similar genres such as the livre d’artiste. As he has delineated the genre: “Artists’ books are understood to be books or booklets produced by the artist using mass-production methods, and in (theoretically) unlimited numbers, in which the artist documents or realizes art ideas or artworks.” Also collaborating with Printed Matter and Franklin Furnace, among other places dedicated to the medium of the book, Phillpot helped raise awareness of artists’ books, endowing them with the critical credentials to enter the collections of museums. Booktrek gathers for the first time Phillpot’s essays on the definition and development of artists’ books from 1972 to the present--historical texts, manifestos, catalogue entries and essays on works by Ed Ruscha, Sol LeWitt, Dieter Roth and Richard Long. Booktrek will prove an invaluable reference for all those interested in the evolution of the artist’s book, and offers a crucial account of the genre’s ascent.

Neither Snow Nor Rain by Devin Leonard
The United States Postal Service is a wondrous American creation. Seven days a week, its army of 300,000 letter carriers delivers 513 million pieces of mail, 40 percent of the world’s volume. It’s far more efficient than any other mail service in the world, and it has a storied history. Founded by Benjamin Franklin, it was the information network that bound far-flung Americans together, fostering a common culture. A first-class stamp remains one of the greatest bargains of all time, yet the USPS is slowly vanishing. Neither Snow Nor Rain is a rich history, full of remarkable characters, from the stamp-collecting FDR, to the revolutionaries who challenged USPS’s monopoly on mail, to the renegade union members who brought the system—and the country—to a halt in the 1970s. An exciting, engrossing read, Neither Snow Nor Rain is the first major history of the USPS in over fifty years.

Latest headline News Report Was Printed In Mexico City
You probably ne'er unreal that the primary news was written in capital of Mexico. Americans today have fully grown accustomed to having the most recent news of the most recent natural disaster outright at their fingertips via broadcast news, the Internet and newspapers and magazines.
However, the first ever BBC news point was AN eight-page brochure printed in 1541 once a storm and earthquake desolated Central American country. Although the printing press had been fabricated in Europe a couple of century earlier, in 1440, the field of journalism had yet to be fabricated. The earliest products of the printing press were Bibles and books cheap solely to the foremost affluent folks in European society.
In 1534 the first press within the New World was put in in capital of Mexico at the dictation of a publishing firm in Seville, Spain. The earliest surviving product of this printing press were authored by Juan Pablo, an Italian worker of the publisher. The headline on his 1541 booklet will be translated: "Report of the alarming Earthquake that Has Reoccurred within the Indies in an exceedingly town known as Central American country."
More than forty years later, the second printing press in America was installed at capital of Peru, Peru. A publication surviving from 1594 describes the capture of AN English pirate in the Pacific waters close to South American country, identified as "John of Quines," the son of John Hawkins.
Although the printing press in South American country was initially used principally to provide non secular literature, by 1618 printers were producing monthly news reports discussing the news from Europe. There are conjointly a number of living copies of stories publications in Mexico throughout the 1600s. However, it was not until 1722 that the Acetate DE Mexico, or Mexican Gazette, published monthly by the Catholic church, began to regularly feature native and foreign news.
Although the audience for these early newspapers was at first little and restricted to the most affluent members of society, the landowners and the upper crust, we will see that the press in Latin America developed for the foremost half severally of the press farther to the north within the us.
The first press arrived within the British yank colonies in regarding 1638 however the primary newspaper that wasn't just a rehash of European news, The New England Currant, published by Benjamin Franklin's brother James, appeared in 1721 in Boston. The Currant, in addition to the news from Europe, contained essays and satirical items by Franklin and his circle of friends. Even Benjamin Franklin himself worked as a typographer and wrote many articles underneath the pseudonym "Silence Dogwood."
Although the antediluvian formulation and generally uneven and generally ragged and ink-blotched pages of these centuries-old BBC news point if indeed copies survive, are typically laborious to decipher, a wealth of information regarding historical events, people and places, and living conditions during the colonial era will be gleaned these days by those history researchers and homemade kindred buffs willing to dive deep into the musty tomes that currently, thanks to modern technology, are being digitized and placed on-line for public use.

So…
If you’ll allow me, I’m here to be YOUR guide on your important journey.

Chicago Coin Club Inducts Arlie R. Slabaugh Into Hall of Fame
Arlie R. Slabaugh (April 26, 1925 – Sept. 26, 2007) was appointed Assistant Editor of the Numismatic Scrapbook in April 1954 and moved to the Chicago area from Artie, “among the West Virginia hills.” The next month, on May 14, he joined the Chicago Coin Club as member No. 619. A frequent exhibitor of wartime currency and unusual numismatic items, he was recognized for one of the best exhibits at the Club’s 1954 annual banquet. At the December 1956 meeting, he read an original poem, “A Christmas Phone Message,” asking Santa to bring all the members of the club the items they wanted. He received the Club’s Literary Award in 1961 and 1965. The club’s highest honor, the Medal of Merit, was presented to him in 1966.
Mr. Slabaugh began collecting as a schoolboy. At 13, he sent 10 cents to a dealer for a banknote and foreign coin, and soon had an interest in numismatics so “serious” that he founded his own magazine, The Hobby Spotlite. It was then just a single page with limited circulation but later a printed, national publication. He joined the ANA at 16, but on Jan. 22, 1942 was stricken with “mastoiditis” and hospitalized for three weeks, leaving him completely deaf. He learned to read lips and continued to speak. At the West Virginia School for the Deaf, he studied journalism and printing, though this scarcely interrupted his writing and publishing. By 1948, he was the first full-time dealer in world paper money in the United States, but was “glad to receive a regular paycheck” from the Numismatic Scrapbook. Here he excelled until lured away by the Franklin Mint in Pennsylvania in 1967 as Director of Numismatic Information, remaining with them until 1985.
His first book, The German Inflation, was 40 pages long and self-published in 1947. It was reprinted from the Numismatic Scrapbook 1945-46. But his most lasting contribution was Confederate States Paper Money, published by Whitman in 1958; an eleventh edition was released in 2008 under a modified title. On other wartime emergency monies, he wrote Encased Postage Stamps, U.S. and Foreign (1967), Japanese Invasion Money (1963, fifth ed. 1977), and Prisoner of War Monies and Medals (1965, second ed. 1969). Other longer works covered U.S. commemorative coins, small size National Bank Notes, and several exonumia categories. Besides these booklets, he contributed scores of articles to the Numismatic Scrapbook, The Numismatist, the TAMS Journal, and Paper Money.
A charter member of the Token and Medal Society, he was an assistant editor of the TAMS Journal and received their Medal of Merit in 1967; he served as President from 1978-1980. The Society of Paper Money Collectors presented him with its Nathan Gold Memorial Award for lifetime achievement in 1963. The Numismatic Literary Guild honored him with their highest award, the Clemy, in 1981. He was voted a Numismatic Ambassador in 1989. And from the ANA, Mr. Slabaugh received a Heath Literary Award in 1948, two B.P. Wright Exhibit Awards in 1965 and 1966, the Medal of Merit in 1991, the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award and a President’s Award, both in 1997, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Although deaf and with limited education, he cheerfully overcame these difficulties and pioneered the study of many exonumia and synographic areas, combining historical and technical accuracy with a matter-of-fact, folksy writing style. His genius was such that, while typesetting on a linotype machine at the Numismatic Scrapbook, he could anticipate what space would remain after the article and compose a short item to fill it before he reached the bottom of the page.
Twelve Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. The remaining two will be announced one a month, November and December, during the Chicago Coin Club’s centennial year, 2019.
The Chicago Coin Club was organized in 1912 as American Numismatic Association Branch No. 1, and reorganized under its present name in 1919. All are invited to join. To become a member you must attend a meeting and submit an application along with a membership fee of $20 ($10 for Junior membership). A first reading of your application will be held at this meeting, and a second reading at the next monthly meeting, following publication of your name in the club newsletter. (You are not required to be present for the second reading.) Upon membership approval, you will become a member.
The Chicago Coin Club holds monthly meetings in downtown Chicago, plus at major numismatic conventions such as Central States, with a speaker featured at every meeting except the annual auction, held at the November meeting.
