what I wasn’t expecting (a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one) was several instances of incredibly heartfelt, evocative, and sweet introspections from Poe on his family, upbringing, philosophy / ethics, the resistance, and love 🥺 so many sweet characterization tidbits in this book, I really enjoyed reading it ♡

it started off as the church going oh this would be hot and now it’s a character study. you know how it is. it’s a kunichuuranzai swap au with chuuya in the ada, and kunikida, ranpo and dazai all as executives in the mafia. there’s also some other changes though, such as tachihara, hirotsu, oda, and akutagawa are all also in the ada. Fukuzawa created it for oda in this case, instead of ranpo. naomi is in the mafia too! good for her. katai is as well, i’m pretty sure he plays a role similar to ango? anyway, because of those changes, they also have different story lines now (some have been changed a lot, some not so much). oh and ranpo got his scar from poe

Possible reasons Pluto's scared of water.

Spoilers for episode 129.

These are completely uniformed rambles. I haven't read a lot of Poe's works, and most of this is fueled by an hour of online research. You have been warned.

I haven't looked fully into other water imagery in Poe works that could relate to Pluto, but we definitely knew that Poe had a fear of water to some degree and used it a good bit in his works. So, from what we know of Pluto, he lived in Blackpool, which at the time (roughly estimated) was a popular vacation destination for its beaches. This could lead to two main possibilities that I've thought of to explain his innate fear of water. Either he worked on a ship of some sort for the tourist trade/was a fisher and was on a boat for that purpose OR he was trying to take a boat to leave as a passenger (get away from his father). In all accounts, he went over board while not being able to swim and nearly drowned. The only other circumstance I can really think of is that he nearly drowned by his father's hand somehow? Maybe he pushed him into a river or something (river styx reference 👀), knowing he couldn't swim? Idk. There are a lot of options and also not enough info to tell. (Possibly we'll see if there is a flashback episode next week) He definitely seems to fear large bodies of water as opposed to the rain, so I definitely think he nearly drowned at some point in that way regardless.

So, in relation to other Poe works, possibly influencing Pluto's character/back story, this is what I found. It definitely could be an interesting twist if he takes slightly inspiration from The Fall of the House of Usher, and his fear of water comes from a place of mental illness. This brings me to my next thoughts.

There's also a theory itself that suggests that Poe may have had hydrophobia near his time of death brought on by possible rabies? Just conjecture on my end, but it could be possible that Pluto is just being given hydrophobia due to Poe also possibly having it near his death (Pluto nearly dying in 129 and possible flashback next episode?). This could be supported by Pluto's character emerging during the maze arc (phobia trails) and him being aware of etymology. Further could be supported by most cats' natural dislike of water and rabies being a possible cause of death for Poe (rabies is usually associated with animals). It's just loosely related and not really an explanation for why Pluto canonically is scared of water but still interesting. Hopefully, we do end up getting a Flashback episode next week, and we can get a canonical explanation for his fear.

TotK DLC idea!

The screen is black. You don’t hear anything for a long time. Then, faintly, in the distance, you can hear it.

Link. Link. Open your eyes.

While the line echoes familiarity, the voice does not.

Or. Well. It does. Because while it isn’t Zelda, it’s a familiar man’s voice speaking gently, so gently you almost don’t recognize it because there’s no way he ever spoke like this in the main game.

But he is now. And instead of a golden light being the first image you see before the screen shows Link awakening… you see gloom floating in the air. The image cuts to a Hylian waking up who… doesn’t look like Link from TotK?? He’s different, still small in stature, with slightly tanner skin, platinum light blonde hair, and red eyes. But… something’s wrong with his forehead. There’s a weird line on it.

This new character you apparently are gonna be playing in the DLC blearily blinks his eyes open, clearly groggy and too weak to really move. But then that line on his forehead moves a hair, it splits apart, and you realize it’s a freaking eye, red and yellow and it’s like the ones on gloom hands and oh gosh what the hell is it doing on his forehead—

Link realizes something is off and his eyes blow wide, his hands reach for his forehead and he screams in agony and terror, only for someone to scoop him into a hug to soothe him.

And suddenly you realize why that voice was eerily familiar.

It’s Ganondorf. He resurrected you from the era of the Imprisoning War. You, who have a history with him and his family. You, who he wants to protect, who he views as his kid, who he calls a prince and says he’ll keep you safe by controlling your body with his dark magic if he has to.

Welcome to Tears of the Kingdom: Hero’s Shadow.

You have to play a long gone Hero who was resurrected. Ganondorf, who is still recovering his strength in preparation for killing the current Hero, tasks you with finding your betrothed, his daughter, as well as his wife. They’re buried somewhere in the Depths like you were. He wants you to find their burial sites so he can use his secret stone to resurrect them like he did you, and control them as well. Which is doubly bad when you realize his wife was the original Sage of Lightning. He gives you free reign to wander once you go through a tutorial (he tests you to see if you’ve recovered enough strength), because he knows you love wandering and collecting things. Your own personal objective, however, is trying to help Hyrule from the Depths, to break free from Ganondorf’s control, because Link would rather set himself on fire than let Ganondorf resurrect and control the love of his life and his mother-in-law. Your best hope is to find shards of the shattered Master Sword to try and stab the eye on Dark Link’s forehead and break the control Ganondorf has on you. Until you can, though, the monsters are your allies, you can teleport across the Depths by manifesting out of the gloom created by gloom hands (just like what Phantom Ganon does), and the world below is your oyster. If you get too close to sword shards when gloom hands are nearby, Ganondorf can see your attempt and immediately takes control of your body, and no matter what button you press Link just walks back to Ganondorf’s location and stays there until you get a chance to try again.

You start with three hearts, all empty looking like when gloom hurts you, and if you get injured they just shatter. Whenever they all shatter, you respawn at Ganondorf’s location because his gloom hands came and rescued you from dying. The only way you can get more hearts is by collecting poes and offering them to the statues in the Depths. You can communicate with the spirits of soldiers, who may give you combat tips or info about the area. If you gain enough of Ganondorf’s trust, he’ll let you command monsters, and he might even let you wander the Surface (under his supervision) during a blood moon.

You learn of Link’s and Ganondorf’s history through discovering ancient relics/texts that trigger memories. This connection between you and Ganondorf stems back to time before the war, well over ten thousand years ago. Link was engaged to Ganondorf’s daughter, but during the Imprisoning War the family fought against the demon king. Ganondorf did love his family, but he loved power more. Link sacrificed himself, letting himself get mortally wounded to save Rauru from a killing blow. Gan held him as he died, and it allowed Link to both beg him to stop and stab him in the heart with a light shard. The shard didn’t kill him, but it was what Rauru connected with when he hit him in the chest, allowing him to seal Ganondorf away. Ganondorf still wants the world, but his love for his family is still present, though now twisted, so he thinks he can control Link and everyone else with his dark magic in order to keep them safe and in line. Once the threat of the current Hero is eliminated, the world will be his, and his family will be safe. As such, he treats you, Link, the player, like a stubborn child, reeling you in, but does so in a horrific way, torturing Link by controlling him.

You have to break free of this and stop him, and the only hope you have is the distant call of a sword spirit…

before i caught up with the manga last year, the guild was actually my favorite organization! poe and margaret were my favorites at the time (and now lucy!) especially in the design aspect because both poe and margaret Scream bougie, which was the exact vibe i wish every guild character emanated from their outfits, even if they come from different backgrounds

i don't have a lot of definitive thoughts on her because realisitcally, we don't know much about her

she does appear arrogant and dramatic yes, we've seen her dedication in salvaging the reputation of her family and how that affects how she treats her co-workers (like when she continuously protected hawthorne during his fight with akutagawa) but other than that? i don't have much i can say

i know the guild characters are stuck in the shelf, but if ever we get to explore them again even just as a side story, i'd love to see how she became a guild member, especially her partnership with hawthorne because clearly they've been partnered enough times that she's willing to take the role of defense for hawthorne to the extent that she was sent to a comatose from an extremely fatal attack

like?? even if you don't see her as much during the fight, the times we did see her, she was defending for his sake, not attacking alongside him or even battling without his cooperation like you'd expect from the arrogant woman, i'd love to learn more about how they've come to this type of battle dynamic as a duo

It just came to me because i thought at first swapping Harley with Poppy simply because the idea of a teeny tiny TV with limbs was making laugh so hard.

Um! But then i thought about it. I really want to work on a swap AU. Its not just a swap. They dont swap personality exactly- but they are different. I haven't decided on their morals changing or not either. I do think it would be interesting.

I think Harley would be human simply because the player is seemingly human at the moment. But in the AU player is a toy. Undecided though.

I also want to clarify even the ones who don't have swaps exactly are slightly different.

Like Mommy and Doey for example. Mommy has Daddy and Baby Long legs, while Doey is just one of the kids at this point now.

Why did i pick Pianosaurus to replace Huggy? I thought it would be fun. Simple as that. I don't exactly like making literal one to one swaps. And no Huggy would have way more time than Pianosaurus does.

Miss Delight is different too! But i haven't decided too much on that.

Ok long yap warning but this is a soulmate au I've been writing (with both platonic and romantic soulmates) where as long as you and your soulmate are asleep at the same time, you can appear in each others' dreams ig? The downside is that no one can remember their dreams, so they don't know if they actually have soulmates until they meet and have some kind of skin contact (can be deliberate, or just accidentally bumping into someone, and some abilities count as physical touch and some don't) at which time they get all of their memories with that one person. The idea was that even if you meet your soulmates later in life, you'll still have a lot of memories with them and you won't feel like you've missed anything? There are also some in-dream rules, like you can't talk about (or really think about) other soulmates in the dream so no one gets "spoiled" by meeting one soulmate (like if person a tells their soulmate (person b) about their other soulmates and meets person b first, person a would know their other soulmates bc they got their memories, and that's not allowed)

But once you meet a soulmate in person, you can talk about them with your other soulmates (unless you share a soulmate with them (which would mean you know they share a soulmate with you, but they don't know, and you can't say))

Anyway you only meet your soulmates for the first time when one (or both) person/people need comfort and are already sleeping at the same time, so things like timezones can be tricky (for example, poe and ranpo don't meet until the death of ranpo's parents bc ranpo falls asleep mid-funeral (i.e. during the day) which is when poe would normally be asleep, which is how they meet)

But the actual plot is that Poe and Akutagawa are platonic soulmates, and they meet six years before canon (after poe refuses to take Ranpo's hand during the competition and accidentally postpones their own meeting by a few years bc neither of them have the right memories and poe still thinks he hates ranpo to his very core) and just before Akutagawa meets Dazai and all his friends like. die

(Btw dream ranpo finds it very funny that real world poe is trying to kill him, and dream poe is just embarrassed)

Poe winds up bumping into Akutagawa, they both get their memories (which are mostly akutagawa slowly opening up to poe like a disgruntled cat over the course of 2 years) and poe gets him, gin, and the other 5 orphans out of the forest (unfortunately this means I actually have to write five more characters from scratch, but whatever lmfao)

Edgar knows he’s being watched the moment he wakes up, so it isn’t as startling as it could be to see Ryuunosuke staring at him from across the living room floor, silent and still. The moon is still high in the sky, so it’s probably somewhere around two in the morning, and Edgar can only sigh before sitting up against the arm of the couch.

“Do you need something?” he asks, and Ryuunosuke only stares back at him. His back hurts, but sleeping on the couch tends to do that. “Blankets?”

At that, Ryuunosuke murmurs, “Need to keep watch.”

Ah. Edgar pointedly does not sigh at that, because it does make sense. Of course he wouldn't trust Edgar that easily. He has to admit, getting two years' worth of memories in an instant is more jarring than people say it is.

Unfortunately, Ryuunosuke is also a child, which means he needs sleep.

Slowly, giving himself time to stretch, Edgar stands. He sees Ryuunosuke tense, standing to follow as Edgar makes his way to the one supply closet he'd bothered to fill. He takes two blankets—the boy seems like he gets cold easily—even if he’s not entirely sure why his sponsor had left them in the first place.

Shrugging off the thought, Edgar makes his way back to the couch, tossing the blankets onto the further end and picking up the book on his nightstand.

“At least sit on the couch,” he says, flipping through the pages and trying to remember where he’d left off. (Karl always runs off with his bookmarks.)

Out of the corner of his eye, Edgar sees Ryuunosuke step towards the couch, glaring at the blankets sprawled across the seat as though they’d personally offended him. Still, glancing back at Edgar suspiciously, he sits, lifting the blankets just enough to cover his legs. Edgar keeps reading, letting Ryuunosuke stare at him even if it’s more than a bit awkward. They’re silent for about ten minutes before he asks the question Edgar knows has been burning on his tongue for hours.

“Why?”

Edgar closes the book, keeping his thumb in between the pages. “Why not?”

The boy scoffs, looking towards the window, and then his glare is back on Edgar, “We don’t need you. We’re fine on our own.”

“I could take you back,” Edgar offers, and Ryuunosuke freezes. Quickly, he tries again, “That’s not a threat. It’s genuine. I’d rather not have any of you feel like I’m keeping you hostage—while I’m not keen on sending children off on their own, I’ll take you back if you really want to.”

“We’re not kids,” Ryuunosuke hisses, making Edgar frown.

“You’re like– a freshman at best. Thirteen?”

“Fourteen.”

“Fourteen,” Edgar sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. Fourteen is a weird age. You’re not quite a teenager, even though you’ve technically been one for a year, but not really a kid either. He certainly wouldn’t want to be fourteen again. He pivots, “Do you want to use your ability on me?”

There’s a brief silence, and Ryuunosuke stares at him like he’s an idiot. Rude. “You want me to stab you?”

“No,” Edgar rolls his eyes, even if Ryuunosuke can’t see them past his fringe. “Your ability is good for more than stabbing, isn’t it? You were using it to hold onto Gin before.”

Ryuunosuke narrows his eyes, “And why would I do that?”

Edgar could explain that doing so would give Ryuunosuke some semblance of control, make him relax a bit, and maybe let him fall asleep if he knew Edgar literally couldn’t go anywhere, but he’s fairly certain a response like that would just make things worse. Instead, he shrugs. “You don’t have to. Just a suggestion.”

He seems to take it at that, to Edgar’s surprise, “Why do you cover your face?”

“My eyes are sensitive to light,” Edgar responds easily, “But you know that.”

“I should use that against you,” Ryuunosuke says, clearly intending to sound threatening but only succeeding in making Edgar grin. 

“Sure. Do you remember that I’m also afraid of heights and I don’t do well in crowded places?”

“Do not make fun of me,” Ryuunosuke hisses.

“Think of it as a peace offering,” Edgar tilts his head. It’s weird having a conversation without Karl on his shoulders (and a conversation that he’s pretty sure they’ve already had at that), but he’s pretty sure the other kids trapped Karl in Edgar’s room with them when they went to sleep. Still, talking to kids has always been easier than talking to adults. Open hostility he can deal with—silent judgement not so much. “You can use that against me if you need to.”

Anyway they eventually go back to america and they all join the Guild together aslkjadlj so Fitzgerald shows up intending to recruit Edgar and gets seven overprotective teenagers as a bonus (akutagawa is particularly interested in poe's revenge plot, and the kids all try to help poe with his novel lmao)

Idk this all spawned bc I realized akutagawa met dazai at the same time poe lost the competition and I was like....... well. details are subject to change but this is what im planning on so far
