Did ya’ll know I’m a professional editor? Got a certificate from UC for it and my own hard copy of the CMOS 17th Edition and everything. And I was thinking, “Hey, it could be fun to keep in practice with random people on tumblr!” SO:

So...the 18th editition of the Chicago Manual of Style is live, which is pretty relevant because I'm an editor.

I was grouchy when the MLA 9th handbook was stupidly designed to be unusable unless you read it linearly like a book. CMOS 18th might have just beaten that, because HOLY EVER-LOVING TITMONKEYS we did not need that level of granularity for volume numbers, issue numbers, publication years, and months/seasons. The sheer number of ways to format this now? Utterly unnecessary. Like, for example, all of the following are correct:

Journal 13 (6): 1-5.

Journal, no. 6 (fall 2022): 2-7.

Journal 54, nos. 4-5 (2013): 60.

Journal, no. 77, 45-55.

Literally this looks messy AF and it's nitpickily detailed well past the point of being useful for finding the damn source yourself, which is why we cite our sources!!!! This is unnecessarily granular and specific and I really, really hate it.
