After combing through a lot of onboards from the Brazil Sprint, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Lestappen honorary-teammates agreement was in full effect, and Charles eventually let Max through without much of a fight on purpose.

The first clip here is Carlos’ onboard from Japan this year where Charles was on the one stop strategy and had been told, “Don’t lose time with Sainz.” You can see Carlos get a strong DRS run on him, and he very clearly jumps off of the racing line to let his teammate, currently the faster car, by.

In the second clip, Max’s onboard from the sprint features a very similar-looking move in the way Charles jumps off of the conventional racing line very early on in the straight (not pictured is the way he slotted back onto the racing line right behind him).

Some other supporting facts are:

a) Charles began receiving messages about LiCo on lap 15, and immediately after Max passed, he asked if he could stop (they said no, it was still needed for temps)— so he knew he was the slower car.

b) The other cars that actively defended along that back straight chose to either try to sit in the middle of the road or hug the racing line and force the other car to overtake on the inside.

All of this to say, obviously Charles didn’t want to give up the position to Max, but when the overtake became an inevitability, I think he chose to make it easy, like he would for a teammate.
