It takes a mature fan to look at something they love and say "Yeah, it has its flaws." I thank the Godzilla series for that in my life. Now, Attack of the Crab Monsters is one of my favorite movies. And it's terrible!

One of the reasons I'll always stand by the 2013 Carrie remake is how it perfectly understands the psychology of a bully in the way few pieces of media do. The bullies in the original Carrie film adaptation, the one everyone praises, are cartoonish caricatures rather than real people, the all the interiority of Snidely Whiplash.

But in the 2013 movie you get to the scene where Chris Hargensen, the leader of the bullies, is brought into the principal's office and told that she'll not only be suspended, but banned from going to prom for how she and her pals bullied Carrie at the beginning of the movie, and the actress who plays her does this phenomenal job of conveying how, in Chris's mind, she's the victim. There's no cartoonish ranting or villainous monologuing, but rather a genuine outrage at a situation that she truly believes is unjust.

The actress and the movie both understand that in Chris's mind, she is entitled to torment Carrie - that her tormenting Carrie isn't just enjoyable, but a right that she has, a just and good thing for her to do because it the world is structured for her to do so, and that denying her that right is an injustice. The warped logic of the bully isn't "Haha I love being mean and evil," but rather, "When I hurt people, they deserve it and I deserve to enjoy doing it, because that is good and just."

And I think that's important because, like, we all have our Chris Hargensen moments. Every one of us has had a time where we felt entitled to be cruel, and recognizing that is important to being a better person. You can't let yourself fall into the trap of believing that your cruelty is always justified, or else Carrie is going to throw your car into a brick wall with you inside it.

Guess it's finally time to explain. What the heck is that? And what's it doing here? This'll be a basic rundown much like my initial info post. The basics that I will build off.

Only known as the 'mutation code', you can think of this virus as a piece of the solver that broke off. When this happened is unknown (to the denizens of Bismuth-12). This piece was too small to gain consciousness, but it was large enough to become infectious. Latching on to drones and AI whose security wasn't strong enough to stave it off. This code is more of a disease, incubating within the system of these patient zero drones until proliferation has completed. Mutating them from the inside out and corrupting their code. The mutations and effects vary wildly depending on how a drone was infected and the environment inside the drone itself. Wild mutations and adaptations were common in the first months of the fall.

The crab cores resulting from the mutation code infection are much less stable than those of the solver cores. Unlike the solver cores, the mutation code cores cannot survive outside of a capsule (a body or containment) for very long without undergoing heavy mutation and destabilization. They are not coated with flesh, instead heaving an unstable and dripping oil-like substance. It is believed to be oil that was mutated and semi-hardened by the mutation code as a form of protective cover. These oily cores are a clear signal that the mutation code is nowhere near the same level of sophisticated as the solver code, but it can spread and proliferate much quicker.

The drones first targeted by the mutation code did not have it easy. Wildly mutating and becoming monstrous when the virus proliferated within them. Losing control to the wild devouring instincts that the solver drones showed in the early days of humanity's fall. Devouring and destroying whatever lay in their path. These drones were the kick-off to Bismuth-12's planetary panic.

(Mary - second hand infected)

Drones like Mary, high-class models, usually would not fall prey to the mutation codes attack. However, it was given the red carpet when Ophelia injured her via a fang injection. Due to her much stronger anti-virus systems and protections, Mary's infection was slow and steady. The mutation code took nearly 22 years to proliferate in her system enough to start causing issues. Much more similar to a solver drone. Slowly whittling away at her mental functions and twisting her mourning into thoughts of revenge against the DDs for how they'd taken her husband. All to draw her to the surface where she could mutate freely. This same effect has been seen across many colonies with reports of drones suddenly up and vanishing to the surface without an expedition party.

(Carrion - inherited infection)

Carrion is Mary's daughter by code. As such she inherited the mutation code from her, at the time neither of them knew. This form of the mutation is most similar to the solver infection. Having proliferated and adapted to her system. It is much more symbiotic than direct infection. This can be seen most in the behavior of the tail, believed to be a representation of the mutation code. Acting much like a dog or playful companion. This form of the mutation code has been well adapted to the host, and the host can use the oily substance to their benefit. Shifting its unstable form into many a tool and weapon for the given situation. The risk of mutation and destabilization is lowest in inherited infection, becoming less of a danger the further down the line it goes. Though it can still be triggered and require capsuling.

What all these infected drones have in common is the need for oil. Given how integrated the use and mutation of oil is within this system, it means they require MUCH more of it to remain stable. This resulted in the rise of the DDs. The only one who's found a 'treatment' for this mutation code is an AI entity simply known as 'the factory'. Upon detecting it, the factory worked tirelessly in experimentation to figure out how to contain and neutralize it. First, it starts with itself, building a ramshackle capsule to contain the proliferated virus. Containing and forcing it into a more manageable form known as the core.

It subsequently capsuled the assembly drones within its walls, increasing the armor and strength of their internal structures to contain the infection. This resulted in the builders, the first of the DD types to appear on the planet. The factory gave them a mission, find the infected and bring them to be capsuled. Placed into the experimental bodies of the first DD wave. To keep themselves stable they must hunt. All in order to keep the virus within them at bay. The process of conversion often left them with only fragments of memories, devoured by the virus. These DDs are much more aggressive than those found on other planets, and much more coordinated.
